Fmr. Houston reporter returns to report from tragic high school shooting

Former KPRC 2 reporter Jennifer Bauer reports from scene of horrible Florida high school shooting

First of all, my thoughts and prayers go to the victims and all those affected by the terrible Florida high school shootings Wednesday.

When will these school shootings end?

That tragic event brought people to this blog who were looking up information on a former Houston reporter who was live near the scene in Parkland, Florida.

KPRC 2 had immediate reports, because the NBC affiliate's former reporter, Jennifer Bauer, happens to live near the area as the anchors explained on air. The station had their former reporter perform live reports for the evening newscasts.

How Jennifer Bauer's photographer learned he knew a Parkland shooting victim

"When the shooting happened, my old boss at KPRC called to see if I could help them out and report for a few days," Bauer told mikemcguff.com. "I was happy to, but wish it were under different circumstances."

When asked on Twitter how she had a KPRC mic flag, Bauer responded that a KPRC sports crew was in Florida covering the Houston Astros training camp and let her use their's.

"I haven’t stepped in front of a live camera since I left KPRC in June," Bauer told me. "I am working part time for a company that produces corporate videos, so occasionally I get in front of the camera to record pieces for them. I’ve been enjoying time at home with my two kids and getting to know my new community of Parkland."

Bauer and her husband, former KPRC creative services director Mike Guerrieri, left Houston for Miami last summer.

Guerrieri landed a gig at NBC 6 WTVJ as Vice President of Creative Services for the station.

Bauer joined channel 2 as a reporter in 2010 from Jacksonville as a reporter at KPRC's sister station WJXT.

"I appreciate all the Facebook messages and posts from the Houston viewers I can almost feel the Texas-sized hugs and support from here. #PrayersForParkland," Bauer added.

Two Houston media pregnancies; KPRC 2 & KTRK abc13

Baby bumps for KPRC 2's Jennifer Bauer and KTRK abc13's Patricia Lopez

Jennifer Bauer
Jennifer Bauer
Is the Houston TV baby wave coming back? We have two media members expecting!

Houston television viewers are a curious bunch. Questions started coming in about KPRC 2 reporter Jennifer Bauer. Is she pregnant? Naturally people are cautious about approaching someone on social media and asking, so they leave it up to me!

In the case of Bauer, their hunches were correct. Baby number 2 is arriving in May and it's a boy.

There is another channel 2 staffer excited about the upcoming birth - Bauer's husband KPRC Vice President/Creative Services Director Mike Guerrieri.

"The move to Houston was big adjustment for us, but when our daughter was born here is probably the moment we would point to as when it started to feel like home," Guerrieri told mikemcguff.com. "Everyone at the station was so great and the outpouring of warm comments on all the social media pages was overwhelming in the best way.

"Now both of our kids will forever be able to say they are Texans and that’s incredibly cool. We’re excited and praying that all goes well and everyone is healthy."

Daughter Aubrey was born in January 2013.

Patricia Lopez
Patricia Lopez
Across the street, it was announced this morning that KTRK abc13's Patricia Lopez is expecting her fourth child.

Her three young daughters apparently aren't excited about the new addition at this point. Her youngest simply said "ewww, disgusting" when told the news. I'm sure they will come around.

Lopez says with a family of six, they are really going to have to stretch their dollar!

And just because she has been gone from the news for the past few days, people are asking me if Casey Curry is pregnant again. I don't know that one at this point.

I do know that Curry's original pregnancy post was my number one blog post of 2013 though!

(Thanks Robin)

KPRC 2 hires Jennifer Bauer as new reporter

UPDATE JUNE 20, 2017
Jennifer Bauer leaves KPRC2

According to the David Crane Agency, KPRC 2 is bringing a new reporter to Houston.

The TV agency reports Jennifer Bauer is coming in from Jacksonville, Florida. Bauer will be staying in the Post Newsweek family since she already works for KPRC's parent company at station WJXT 4.

According to her WJXT bio, Jennifer has a journalism degree from Michigan State University. Her career began at WJXT's sister station in Detroit.

It goes on to say Jennifer enjoys running, going to the beach and playing golf. She also likes spending time with her calico cat, Emmy. What a perfect name for someone in TV to name their cat.

Wikipedia says KPRC 2 morning anchor Lauren Freeman also worked at WJXT before coming to Houston.

Also in the DCA world, Jackie Smith gets her first on air TV job at KMID in Midland, Texas.

KPRC 2's Jennifer Bauer delivers a girl!

Credit: KPRC

I had told you that KPRC 2 reporter Jennifer Bauer was preggers (as one might say if they were trying to look hip at an LA TV station a few years ago).

Well, the little one is here.

Aubrey Elizabeth was born this morning at 10:32. Click2Houston.com reports she came in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces.

As I blogged before, I know someone else at KPRC who is also excited about Aubrey Elizabeth. KPRC Vice President/Creative Services Director Mike Guerrieri is Bauer's husband and I'm sure is jumping for joy right now.

This is the couple's first child. Congrats to both.

As you might remember, KPRC is very used to little ones running around.

Jennifer Bauer leaves KPRC 2; and she's not the only one leaving

KPRC 2 reporter Jennifer Bauer signed off from KPRC 2 last night. She follows her husband, Mike Guerrieri, to Florida. Guerrieri, who has been head of KPRC promotions, landed a new gig with NBC in Miami:

NBC 6 / WTVJ today announced that Mike Guerrieri has been named Vice President of Creative Services for the station. Guerrieri will lead the station’s on-air and off-air marketing efforts, as well as community outreach and programming. He will report directly to Larry Olevitch, President and General Manager for NBC 6. His first day at NBC 6 will be June 12.

“Mike has extensive experience in developing and executing outstanding marketing campaigns that help to connect local audiences with valuable information and resources,” said Olevitch. “We are very excited for Mike to join our team.”

A five time Emmy-award winning broadcaster, Guerrieri has nearly 20 years of experience working in broadcast and multimedia marketing for local televisions all across the country. He joins NBC 6 after working as the Vice President and Director of Creative Services for NBC’s Houston affiliate, KPRC-TV since 2010. Previously, Guerrieri held various executive roles in marketing and local programming for television stations in Jacksonville, Florida, Detroit, Michigan and Hartford, Connecticut.

“I’m happy to continue being part of the NBC family and look forward to working with the creative team at NBC 6 to support the station’s continued success and growth in the market,” added Guerrieri.

Guerrieri earned a bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Connecticut and has served as Chairman of the NBC Station Marketing Council Committee since 2014.

About NBC 6 / WTVJ
NBC 6 / WTVJ is the NBC-owned station serving Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties. NBC 6 was Florida’s first television station and has been covering news in South Florida for more than 60 years. WTVJ was founded on three basic principles: commitment to the community, excellence in journalism and pioneering and innovation. Today, NBC 6 South Florida produces more than 30 hours of local news and programming per week, delivers dynamic multi-platform content on NBC6.com and COZI TV and continues its commitment to the community by cultivating local partnerships and capturing the diversity of South Florida.

Guerrieri will probably most enjoy not having to answer questions from mikemcguff.com at his new station.

Bauer joined KPRC 2 News as a reporter in 2010. She moved to the Bayou City from Jacksonville after spending six years as a reporter at KPRC's sister station WJXT. The Michigan native received her journalism degree from Michigan State University.

Another Houston TV baby wave?

Remember when KPRC 2 had baby fever? After my recent post about Fox 26 KRIV's Traffic Authority Michelle Merhar pregnancy, I learned that KPRC 2 reporter Jennifer Bauer ‏is also expecting (see a photo of her pregnant).

I know someone else at KPRC who is also excited about this baby bump. KPRC Vice President/Creative Services Director Mike Guerrieri is Bauer's husband and I'm sure a very happy father to be.

Bauer tweeted the baby girl is due at the very beginning of January. Maybe their daughter will be the big story on New Year's Day as the first baby of 2013!  Congrats!

Speaking of KPRC chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley married longtime partner Kevin Gilliard.

In case you missed it too, late Friday I posted how KPRC 2 reporter Nefertiti Jáquez was leaving for a new gig. Former Fox 26 KRIV reporter Kristin Kane also announced a new job. (click on their name for more info)

Is that Shasta on TV?

Through my time in the Houston media, one thing is for sure, you meet a lot of University of Houston Coogs in the industry. UH hooks up current students with the media alumni each year at the annual Media Homecoming. 2012 was the fifth event. This year's guests included Pattie Shieh (News92, ex-FOX26), Joy Sewing (Houston Chronicle) and Joey Guerra (Houston Chronicle). It was presented by the UH chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. Previous guests have included Cougar communicators Doug Miller (KHOU Ch. 11), Marisa Ramirez (host of KUHF's "UH Moment"), Amy Davis (KPRC Ch. 2), David Dalati (ESPN 97.5 FM) and Anna Megan Raley (Houston Chronicle/CBS Radio).

Santa Claus the DJ?

Not Houston media, but still cool...Santa will give your kid a personalized phone call. It's thanks to Austin-start up Audingo which I wrote about in September. Austin's Mix 94.7 lets listeners text their child’s name to 512-MIX-0054, and Santa rings the phone number within 10 minutes, addressing the recipient by name with a special message. Try it through Christmas Eve. The child can even reply to Santa with a voice message using Audingo’s TalkBack feature. Messages from kids around Austin are posted on Mix 94.7’s website here: http://www.mix947.com/pages/14967108.php

Anderson Cooper wipes up KPRC's 'serial pooper' story

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper flushes KPRC 2's 'serial pooper' story with a load of puns

Houston's Woodland Heights neighborhood, near The Heights, has a serial pooper on the loose. Yes, it is what you think.

Thankfully KPRC reporter Jennifer Bauer was there to get the poop scoop. Naturally, other TV stations and websites were quick to squeeze out stories of their own based on Bauer's reporting.

Then CNN's Anderson Cooper took a plunge with the story and really cleansed the whole thing to make the news cycle regular again (watch him embedded above).

Houston journalist realizes connection to Parkland victim while covering the story

KPRC 2 photojournalist Gil Gredinger had to cover the horrific Parkland, Florida shooting and then deal with the fact he's originally from the area and has ties to victim

Gil Gredinger's Twitter bio photo taken at the implosion of Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia when he worked in that market.

We have heard many horror stories from last week's Parkland, Florida shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 lost their lives.

The story became personal for one Houston television journalist covering the news from the scene.

On that Valentine's Day, KPRC 2 photographer Gil Gredinger's day was about to be altered from the daily routine of covering Houston news.

As I wrote last week, former channel 2 reporter Jennifer Bauer, who recently moved to the area of the shooting, was re-hired on a freelance basis to the cover the breaking news for Houston NBC affiliate.

Gredinger jumped on a plane to join her.

The longtime Houston photographer happens to be from Hollywood, Florida. Both Hollywood and Parkland are located in Broward County. He describes the area as a tight-knit community.

Upon arriving at the scene ready to start capturing images with his camera, Gredinger realized his professional and personal worlds were beginning to collide.

"I knew three parents who had kids at that school," Gredinger told mikemcguff.com.

One of those kids was Alex Schachter, 14. After getting the proper confirmation, Gredinger was the first, or one of the first, to tweet about Alex's death. That tweet apparently led Gredinger to be mistakenly listed as Alex's former march band instructor in news coverage.

"I went to high school with his father," Gredinger tweeted. "He died yesterday. My heart breaks for his family. I have no words."

Alex's father, Max, recently recited a poem at a CNN town hall his son composed weeks before his death.

"I was hoping no one I knew there had kids that were injured," Gredinger told me. "I wanted to stop working, but I knew I had a job to do."

It turns out the children of Gredinger's other two friends escaped the school shooting.

People in the media learn to suppress their feelings when covering horrible stories. That is why they are sometimes criticized for being cold and uncaring. It is how they survive working in an industry, when at a moment's notice, they witness the worst about humanity or nature.

Gredinger said that keeping his feelings in check became more and more difficult with this story.

"It was like a race horse, you put on the blinders and just go," he recalled. "When I went back to the hotel that night, that's when it hit me."

By Friday, Gredinger was back on a plane to Houston with haunting memories and emotions in tow as the nation must now mourn and deal with this tragedy, past and future ones.

I should note that the Houston TV stations were already in Florida covering the Astros Spring Training in West Palm Beach. Many of our sports reporters were moved to cover the tragedy until other crews could arrive.

Gredinger told me that because so many teams have Spring Training in Florida, stations from across the country had crews in the area, and were quickly diverted to the scene of the shooting.
