Craig Hlavaty leaves Houston Chronicle for HMNS

Houston Chronicle and chron.com reporter Craig Hlavaty is leaving the newspaper biz behind for a gig with the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) as its social media manager.

"Leaving the Houston Chronicle wasn't an easy decision for me and the past five years on the team has been extremely rewarding and only made me fall in love with my hometown even more," Hlavaty told mikemcguff.com. "That being said, since I could walk and talk museums have been a huge part of my life. I grew up going to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and remember staring at the exhibits in awe. I am joining their team at a great time too with some many special anniversaries on the horizon. I am incredibly excited about what we can tell people in the future about our shared past."

Hlavaty started in the journalism world back in 2006 at the Houston Press where he wrote about music and variety of subjects.

While at the Press, he got into broadcasting at CW39 KIAH's former anchor-less newscast NewsFix with "Between the Lines." The segment featured Hlavaty around Houston with a mix of commentary and features of events going on around town.

"There were a lot of firsts," Hlavaty told me at the time of NewsFix's cancellation back in September 2018. "I think I was the first TV reporter to tattoo himself on camera, get thrown in a pool by Lou Ferrigno, nearly get punched by Mike Tyson, get an IV full of vitamins, and interview the lead singer of GWAR. Through my segment I wrapped my arms around the city of Houston and points beyond and I will never let go, ever."

In April of 2013, Hlavaty left his Houston Press Assistant Music Editor/writer position to join the chron.com where has been ever since.

As you can tell from reading this post, Hlavaty cannot be tied down to just one job.

During the time he joined the Houston Chronicle, he also started appearing on the Outlaw Dave Show.

That eventually lead to his own show/podcast Black Coffee Radio on 950 KPRC who Hlavaty co-hosts with Justin King.
