Craig Hlavaty leaves Houston Chronicle for HMNS

Houston Chronicle and chron.com reporter Craig Hlavaty is leaving the newspaper biz behind for a gig with the Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) as its social media manager.

"Leaving the Houston Chronicle wasn't an easy decision for me and the past five years on the team has been extremely rewarding and only made me fall in love with my hometown even more," Hlavaty told mikemcguff.com. "That being said, since I could walk and talk museums have been a huge part of my life. I grew up going to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and remember staring at the exhibits in awe. I am joining their team at a great time too with some many special anniversaries on the horizon. I am incredibly excited about what we can tell people in the future about our shared past."

Hlavaty started in the journalism world back in 2006 at the Houston Press where he wrote about music and variety of subjects.

While at the Press, he got into broadcasting at CW39 KIAH's former anchor-less newscast NewsFix with "Between the Lines." The segment featured Hlavaty around Houston with a mix of commentary and features of events going on around town.

"There were a lot of firsts," Hlavaty told me at the time of NewsFix's cancellation back in September 2018. "I think I was the first TV reporter to tattoo himself on camera, get thrown in a pool by Lou Ferrigno, nearly get punched by Mike Tyson, get an IV full of vitamins, and interview the lead singer of GWAR. Through my segment I wrapped my arms around the city of Houston and points beyond and I will never let go, ever."

In April of 2013, Hlavaty left his Houston Press Assistant Music Editor/writer position to join the chron.com where has been ever since.

As you can tell from reading this post, Hlavaty cannot be tied down to just one job.

During the time he joined the Houston Chronicle, he also started appearing on the Outlaw Dave Show.

That eventually lead to his own show/podcast Black Coffee Radio on 950 KPRC who Hlavaty co-hosts with Justin King.

Craig Hlavaty is biggest media turkey 2014

NewsFix kept the turkey title in the family

Mike McGuff is back from the sick bed. It's been a horrible few days, but things are turning around! You know I'm sick if there are no posts here or to social media.

In one of my feverish dreams, I went to Johnathan Winter's house for a party. In his upstairs, which was way too large for the size of the house, there was a hallway full of paintings. Some of them were kid painted watercolors of Marvin Zindler. And standing there looking at them was Marvin Zindler himself. KTRK abc 13 anchor Gina Gaston poked her head in, took a photo of Zinder, then left.  You know I have writing about Houston media for too long when this happens.

So back on topic, I posted a photo or two on Twitter and Facebook about this past weekend's TXU Houston media turkey calling contest.

There you found out the Houston Chronicle/NewsFix's Craig Hlavaty knocked Grego from his roost and took the crown for biggest media turkey 2014!

I am happy to report I came in second - which counts for something since I only cover the media, but am not really apart of it anymore. Thanks YouTube for the calling help. I also used a quick prop (my wife's sock) to make myself even more of a gobbler. You can see how in the photos below.

The event promotes the upcoming TXU Energy Houston Turkey Trot, which helps Neighborhood Centers, Inc. deliver services to thousands of Houston-area children and seniors.

Hlavaty will get a tree planted in his honor thanks to TXU.

Here are the other fine members of the media that got their turkey strut on:
Ron Trevino - KHOU-TV (CBS)
Doug Miller - KHOU-TV (CBS)
Craig Hlavaty - Houston Chronicle
Todd Freed - KUBE-TV
Grego - NewsFix/CW39
Brien Straw - SportsRadio 610 KILT
Caitilin Espinosa - Fox 26 KRIV

Houston Press' Craig Hlavaty discusses the good and bad of dream jobs

I’m teaming up with TXU Energy to help get the word out about the upcoming TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.

That means I'm also promoting the Houston media turkey calling contest (The contest will be 10am, Saturday, November 10th at the Houston Zoo - Butterfly Stage in the Children’s Zoo).

Houston Press Assistant Music Editor/Staff Writer and KIAH 39 NewsFix contributor Craig Hlavaty has signed up to be a participant in the turkey media contest. He was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer some of questions.

Mike McGuff: Being a music critic/writer is a dream job for many, give us a few favorite moments over the years.

Craig Hlavaty: Since I started scribbling onto a computer about music six years, I have seen and done so much. It's easy to get locked into the moment and forget that you have a dream job. I have met and interviewed some of my idols, and also discovered newfound appreciations for acts that normally I would have dismissed. As for great moments, jeez, it's hard to remember them all, and it's not just because I have a beer or two now and then. A few weeks back I got to hug Willie Nelson. That's the biggest thing that has happened recently. It was like touching God.

Now, all dream jobs usually have some negatives, what are some annoying things about being a music writer your readers don't know about?

If there can be a bad side to my job, it's not having the time or energy to see everything I want. Local and national acts flood this town nightly. Especially the locals. I wish I could hear and see everyone running around out there, but I have to remember that I have a girlfriend, a dog, and a back patio to tend to. Sometimes I need to stay home and lay on the floor and listen to Neil Young to recharge.

How was ACL this year?

ACL was great as always, though my favorite part was seeing Iggy And The Stooges totally baffle and excite the late afternoon crowds. I hope some kids got converted into the Holy Church Of Iggy that day.

Get all the details for the race and Sheltering Arms Senior Services at http://turkeytrot.shelteringarms.org/.

Which Houston media members are going to be turkeys?

The 2015 TXU Energy Houston Media Turkey Calling Contest contestants are...

UPDATE NOVEMBER 18, 2015
Jeff Ehling is Houston media's biggest turkey

photo bakerripley_zpsskcjt1qt.jpg
I got a chance to meet some of the FOX 26 KRIV morning & CBS Houston crew at the Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center.
Once again I'll be participating in the TXU Energy Houston Media Turkey Calling Contest which takes place this Saturday, 9:30am at the Houston Zoo Reflection Pool near the zoo entrance.

This year I will not be a contestant, but serving as emcee with FOX 26 KRIV weekend morning anchor Sally MacDonald.

Let's talk turkey on how this happened. I came in second last year. The winner for 2014 was the Houston Chronicle's Craig Hlavaty. Now, Hlavaty really likes being the top Houston media turkey and I think he wants to make sure I don't take his crown...err feathers. Previous winner, Grego from NewsFix, is not participating either. We might want to start a search party for him...

On a serious note, the turkey calling contest exists to promote the annual TXU Energy Houston Turkey Trot - the second largest footrace in Houston and a tradition for many families on Thanksgiving morning. More than 20,000 supporters flock the Galleria area to make a difference and support more than 160,000 seniors and children Neighborhood Centers serves each year.

A few weeks ago, I took a tour of the Neighborhood Centers Baker-Ripley facility in the Gulfton area. It was amazing to see what is happening there to help area residents. More than a building, it actually could be called a campus, made up of several buildings, including a school, legal assistance center, a credit union, restaurant and more. Turns out one building used to be a retirement place where my grandmother worked in the 1970s!

My fellow emcee, Sally MacDonald, featured one touching story we encountered on her Facebook page.

I met this beautiful woman, Ammi, today at the Baker Ripley location of Neighborhood Centers Inc. She wanted a better...

Houston media tries to make turkey out of Grego

Mike McGuff admits, he really is just a turkey - gobble, gobble

You might remember me talking about the TXU Energy Houston Media Turkey Calling Contest a few years ago on the old blog. Well this year I'm competing in it. The goal...to knock Grego (last year's champion) off his perch.

The event promotes the upcoming TXU Energy Houston Turkey Trot, which helps Neighborhood Centers, Inc. deliver services to thousands of Houston-area children and seniors.

The winner of the media contest gets a tree planted in their honor thanks to TXU.

It all goes down at 10 a.m. on the Butterfly Stage in the Children’s Zoo at The Houston Zoo.

And if you are so inclined, you can come on down and jump on the stage too. If you are a real turkey, then you could win some prizes.

Here are the folks I'm trying to out turkey (more media types might be added):
Ron Trevino - KHOU-TV (CBS)
Doug Miller- KHOU-TV (CBS)
Craig Hlavaty - Houston Chronicle
Cowboy Dave - The New Bull @ 100.3 KILT
Todd Freed - KUBE-TV
Grego - NewsFix/CW39
Brien Straw - SportsRadio 610 KILT

Basically my plan is to watch Grego's performance from last year and copy him. That outlaw is going down!

Last Saturday at the Houston Zoo, the tension could be cut with a turkey knife. That's because members of the Houston media were gobbling it out to see who really is the biggest turkey in the 2015 TXU Energy Houston Media Turkey Calling Contest.

TV anchors, reporters, radio broadcasters, newspaper columnists...all battling it out to see who sounds the most like a real turkey.

FOX 26 KRIV weekend morning anchor Sally MacDonald and I served as emcees of the event, and let me tell you, that is a unique perspective on the whole event.

Last year's winning turkey Craig Hlavaty handed his crown over to newcomer, KTRK abc13 reporter Jeff Ehling!

Below is a sample video of what happened.

NewsFix and morning dose cancelled by Tribune

UPDATE OCTOBER 18, 2018
Sharron Melton returns to Houston TV on CW 39 KIAH

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 14, 2018
NewsFix officially signs off, plus remembering the old 39 News

NewsFix and morning dose will no longer air on KIAH CW39 Houston and KDAF CW33 DFW

According to an internal email obtained by mikemcguff.com, Tribune Media is cancelling NewsFix and its syndicated show morning.dose.

However, we learn from the memo that a new three-hour local morning newscast will launch this fall on CW39 KIAH.

No word on how Houston morning anchor Maggie Flecknoe or NewsFix voiceover/commentator Greg "Grego" Onofrio will be incorporated into the station's new plans.

Apparently the shows will stop production next Friday.

Here is the memo:

I want to take a moment this morning to make you aware of some strategic decisions we have made regarding newscasts in several of our markets. First, some context—while broadcasting delivered strong financial results in the second quarter, to continue being successful, we need to be constantly looking for new growth opportunities and finding new ways of improving our existing businesses. We must be nimble, innovative, and, where it makes sense to do so, be willing to re-think some of our strategies.

It is with these things in mind that we have made the decision to discontinue production of Morning Dose, News Fix in Houston and Dallas, and the late newscast at WDCW in Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of a lot of talented employees, these shows haven’t delivered the ratings or the revenue we hoped for when they were launched. The decision to discontinue any show is never easy and we don’t do it lightly. We understand that these decisions affect the lives of good people who gave their best efforts to achieve success; we hope to give many of them the opportunity to transition to new roles elsewhere in our station group.

Taking these steps will enable us to reallocate the resources devoted to these shows to other areas of our broadcasting business, including the further expansion of local news in several markets. This fall we will add a new three-hour local morning newscast at KIAH in Houston and expand PHL Morning News from 90-minutes to three hours at WPHL in Philadelphia. Mornings are a time-period where we have seen growth, and by shifting resources we believe we can better serve our local audiences.

Tribune continues to make strategic investments. We’re also devoting significant capital to improve the infrastructure at many of our stations and their newsrooms. As Peter mentioned, we’ll be building a new set/studio at WDAF in Kansas City, and in Arkansas, we recently broke ground on a state-of-the-art facility for KFSM and KXNW. KFOR’s new stormproof building in Oklahoma City is now complete and nine of our newsrooms kicked off substantial capital improvements in infrastructure, sets and building renovation this year.

We need to work to make these investments pay dividends for our viewers and advertisers, and ultimately for the company. This year, our broadcast group will produce roughly 84,000 hours of local news across our station group. In the last 5 years, we have expanded our news hours by 34 percent, more than any other station group in the U.S. Of our 27 news producing markets with full news operations, 21 of our stations are ranked #1 or #2 in the market among adults aged 25 to 54. Many markets have reached new rating milestones in 2018 through ratings growth and expansion. Finally, Tribune Media continues to be the #1 broadcast group online and one of the top-20 providers of online news in America. Our strength in local news has allowed our sales departments to drive significant share growth in political advertising, helping to offset the softness in the overall core market.

Peter has challenged us to find growth opportunities and improve our businesses while we navigate the current industry trends. To date we can all be proud of our collective performance, and for that I am grateful. As we close out Q3, let’s continue to play offense, focus on innovation and redirect our thinking to find opportunities that make our company better every day. I thank you for your hard work and dedication to your stations and to Tribune Broadcasting.

Larry Wert

Back in 2010, Tribune announced it was reinventing news with the NewsFix format and chose KIAH CW39 to be the start of its news revolution. The idea then moved to KDAF CW33 in Dallas-Fort Worth.

"I remember being told in the beginning that NewsFix wouldn't last six months," NewsFix contributor and Houston Chronicle reporter Craig Hlavaty told mikemcguff.com. "We made it seven years. In terms of longevity in a city like Houston that's massive. I am floored thinking about the amount of creatives that worked on that news show over the years. My weekly segment opened up an immeasurable amount of doors for me personally, creatively, and professionally. It's hard to quantify the impact it had on my life, suffice to say it changed my life forever."

"There were a lot of firsts," Hlavaty added. "I think I was the first TV reporter to tattoo himself on camera, get thrown in a pool by Lou Ferrigno, nearly get punched by Mike Tyson, get an IV full of vitamins, and interview the lead singer of GWAR. Through my segment I wrapped my arms around the city of Houston and points beyond and I will never let go, ever. That love affair with the city translates daily into my work as a Houston Chronicle staffer."

Just last summer, Tribune re-branded its Dallas-based morning show Eye Opener, as morning dose (yes they keep it all lowercase).

At the time of its re-launch morning dose aired in these six Tribune markets: KDAF/Dallas, KIAH/Houston, WPHL/Philadelphia, WDCW/Washington DC, WSFL/Miami and KRCW/Portland, OR.

As you have probably read in the news, Tribune tried to sell its stations to the Sinclair Broadcast Group. That did not work out. Just yesterday, a new report surfaced Tribune is attempting to sell again.

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 14, 2018
NewsFix officially signs off, plus remembering the old 39 News

UPDATE SEPT. 11, 2018
According to the Houston Business Journal, Tribune Broadcasting will cut 120 jobs in Houston and Dallas as a result of recently canceled shows.

Walton and Johnson off 93.7 The Arrow KKRW

UPDATE 3/4/2013
J.C. Corcoran, 93.7 The Arrow's new morning man

Wouldn't you know the one day I am shooting an interview for my Rock 101 KLOL documentary, with no internet access, that's the day one of the station's former morning shows makes news.

It's the Radio Gawds, not that duo, the other one, Walton and Johnson.

It appears W&J, and the associated cast of characters, are no longer on the air in Houston at 93.7 KKRW The Arrow. I started getting concerned emails from the show's fans early this morning.

Luckily Craig Hlavaty of The Houston Press saw my tweet about it and got on the case. He found out, and I've also heard the same from others, that Walton and Johnson are gone, longtime Houston rocker Steve Fixx takes their slot and the night guy, the legendary Colonel St. James, moves to Fixx's afternoon slot. So you see KLOL still lives on since all of these guys are former Rock 101 jocks.

The W&J guys also gave a rambling left wing blame statement to Craig.

After you reading this blog, you have followed W&J from their time at mornings on 950 KPRC Radio Mojo to 93.7 The Arrow.

Walton and Johnson gave a much longer response about that move and other things to David Barron of the Houston Chronicle:

We were never allowed to air our actual show (that other markets were having record success with) and even then we roundly vanquished the Cox station head to head direct competition for about two years solid even though they spent a couple million dollars in TV ads and promotion while CC spent not one dime in defense. Cox did not start winning some measurement periods until they discovered the wonderful wrinkle in Arbitron’s PPL technology of putting duplicate programming on two stations and having it measured and reported as one. Admittedly a brilliant strategy if you have an extra station to give up. READ THE REST

To put this on a national persepctive, Walton and Johnson are not the only ones out on the street this holiday season. Clear Channel has done nationwide layoffs this time throughout the years. I am hearing other Clear Channel Houston employees have been let go too. All Access is keeping a running tab of cut victims across the US. We learn there that W&J producer Josh Reno is gone too.

"Runaway Radio" 101 KLOL documentary release is this month!

Runaway Radio Houston premiere

Thanks to the Houston Chronicle arts and entertainment editor Cary Darling for exclusively breaking the news on the 2024 release of my upcoming 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio."

Darling has been more patient with me than the entire KLOL Rock and Roll Army.  He's been reliably checking in with me for years concerning the film's status!

As I told Darling in the Chronicle:

"When I started this documentary, we were in a recession, followed by a global pandemic when we finished it," McGuff said. "Based on those who have seen the movie at film festivals, it will be worth the wait!"

"Runaway Radio" will be available to rent or buy on all major video-on-demand (VOD) platforms, including iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and cable/satellite, starting February 27, 2024.

On March 2, 2024, there will be a 6:30pm and 9pm screening in the Houston area at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema LaCenterra in Katy.  Special Q&A hosted by Craig Hlavaty.

"I left KLOL 28 years ago this month, and not a week has gone by in all that time when at least someone hasn’t asked me about the station or told me a story about tickets I gave them or a song I played or more," former KLOL DJ, and current Houston Radio Platinum host, Dayna Steele said. "We were and still are a part of the listeners’ family."

"As the creator of Outlaw Radio on KLOL, it was the launching pad of a rocket ride I can thankfully say is still going," former KLOL DJ and current 95.7 The Spot all-day host GregO said. "KLOL fans will relive all the memories that made 101 great when the station ruled Houston. You will love this movie!"

"I’m so excited that the fans are going to finally be able to see all the hard work that went into chronically one of the greatest radio stations this country has ever known," said former KLOL DJ, and current Houston Eagle night host, Outlaw Dave. "As a Houstonian growing up listening to the station and then for a brief time getting to be a part of it is one of the most special facets of my storied career. Hats off to all the people behind this project of immortalizing what we thought was an immortal station."

"I’ll be forever grateful that KLOL gave me my first opportunity in media," former KLOL on-air personality and current KHOU 11 morning traffic anchor Jennifer Reyna said. "Getting to work at my mother’s favorite radio station alongside the legendary Outlaw Dave and crew made it a fun part of Houston’s radio history. It is exciting to be a part of a station with so much legacy, and I’m glad it will be documented on film."

The film debuted in November 2023 at the music documentary festival Sound Unseen Minneapolis.

PICS: Anna-Megan Raley is the biggest Houston media turkey!

I finally know who the biggest turkey in the Houston media is after all of these months.

Drum roll please...it is the Houston Chronicle/CBS Radio's Anna-Megan Raley! She won the Houston media turkey calling contest which took place last Saturday at the Houston Zoo (see photos of all the Houston media participants above).

As you probably know by now, I have teamed up with TXU Energy to help get the word out about its TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.

Raley will have the opportunity to designate a public place to have a tree planted by TXU Energy and the Texas Trees Foundation.

She was up against:

KPRC 2

KHOU 11
Lily Jang
KTRK 13

Metallica rocks Houston and media shows up

Houston has a classic rocker (106.9/107.5 The Eagle) and alternative rocker (94.5 The Buzz) but no rocker like 101 KLOL anymore. Even though, the Bayou City still loves Metallica.

The Mighty Met was in town last Sunday, and not only filled NRG Stadium, but were heavily featured in the local media! And from what I hear, a lot of the members of the local media were in attendance too.

Who says Houston is not a rock town?

We found out that drummer Lars Ulrich likes to visit the Menil Collection and Rothko Chapel when in town.

As you can see above, Metallica even sent out a video crew to film Houston!

Houston Chronicle's SciGuy Eric Berger joins CW39's NewsFix

Houston Chronicle space, weather and science reporter added to NewsFix

CW39 KIAH's NewsFix has already tapped the Houston media for contributors and now we see another addition. The Houston Chronicle's SciGuy, Eric Berger, will be joining the show every Tuesday and Saturday at 5pm and 9pm. Here is more from the official release:

Eric Berger NewsFix
Eric Berger
When describing NEWSFIX, CW39's revolutionary newscast, five words usually come to mind for Houstonians: "News In A New Way." Starting Tuesday, July 9th, NEWSFIX will feature science in a new way with the Houston Chronicle's Eric 'SciGuy' Berger.

SciGuy is the Houston Chronicle's space, weather and science reporter, covering everything "from nanometers to parsecs." As one of the most popular writers on Chron.com, SciGuy has a unique style of storytelling. That could be why he has a loyal following not only at the Houston Chronicle, but also in other markets throughout the country.

“We are very excited to be partnering with The Houston Chronicle on this project," said Gary Jaffe, News Director of NEWSFIX, "We have always been a big fan of the SciGuy, and NEWSFIX is the perfect fit to bring an animated & graphic intensive version of Eric’s unique voice to life.”

Eric Berger has become a trusted meteorological news source in Houston. His daily updates during Hurricane Ike, were a valuable lifeline for many local residents in the path of the storm. Berger's weather coverage became such a big hit, the Houston Chronicle recently created SciGuy's own daily ‘Weather Now’ page.

“CW39’s NEWSFIX is the perfect partner for this project and we are thrilled to be working with them. Eric has a unique and distinctive storytelling style that allows him to explore complex scientific topics and explain them in a simple and entertaining way,” said Linda Schaible, VP of Marketing and Audience Development, “The partnering of the Houston Chronicle and NEWSFIX highlights both of our fast paced entertaining news products, which match very well with Eric’s style.”

Starting July 9th, the SciGuy franchise will air every Tuesday and Saturday at 5pm and 9pm only on CW39’s NEWSFIX. For a sneak preview visit NewsFixNow.com.

Other contributors include former Houston Press reporter and current Houston Chronicle guy Craig Hlavaty, SportsTalk 790's Charlie Pallilo and rapper Bun B.

REVIEW: The New Bull @100.3 KILT

Two weeks ago, I tweeted and facebooked the news from music ace, Craig Hlavaty, that 100.3 FM KILT had taken country music by the horns and flipped to The Bull.

Radio Insight reports the new brand will be "The Next Generation of Country" with a faster paced presentation to grab the kids. The first songs included Eric Church, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Zac Brown Band, Jake Owen, Carrie Underwood and Kid Rock.

The new lineup includes Foley and Thunder in mornings mornings as before, Erin Austin mid-days, Keola afternoons and Zakk United at night.

Now I am not really a country music kind of guy even though I am a native Houstonian, so I'm pulling out the big guns. Former Houston radio guy Dave Crockett (formerly of 93Q KKBQ, 95.7 KIKK, Mix 96.5 KHMX, 107.5 KLDE among others), who just so happened to launch a new TV audio biz, wrote up something just for mikemcguff.com:

"KILT-FM has taken the bold step of blowing up a Houston radio tradition and rolling out "THE BULL!" A brave move and a great move! I emailed Mark Adams, The VP of Programing at CBS-Houston, and told him how fresh I thought the station sounded. They timed it perfectly for Rodeo Houston which I'm sure was their intent. Plus "THE BULL" really fits Houston. The name is very powerful. Finally somebody shook up the dial without making headlines about who they fired.

Of course KKBQ now has the challenge of using "THE BULL" in their barrage of commercial-counting promos or using the official call letters of their rival up the dial. I'm sure the minds at KKBQ are thinking of ways to incorporate phrase like, "Who's slinging the Bull about how many commercials they play every hour…" Or "Bull is only half a word at KILT. Especially when they claim they play more music…"

Either way, the two share a rich broadcasting tradition. The two stations have been battling each other since 1992 when Nancy Alexander and myself were The New 93Q's first morning team."

- Dave Crockett

Next, I turned to my social media accounts last night and asked what people thought. Here is what people said about the station:

"It's a shame that a station as iconic as KILT changed its name, format, etc. Don't like & don't listen."

"The 'less twang, more bang' tag is laughable. No bueno."

"They play the same few songs over and over and over and over. I switched over to KSTAR."

"In Dallas, we 99.5 The Wolf (KPLX), but in the Bayou city; KILT gets the Bull?"

"Too much music in the morning during Foley & Thunder. I want to hear what the cast (Foley, Thunder, Cowboy Dave) has to say, I can listen to music the rest of the day."

Another thing I found out, KIKK is still alive as a country station on 100.3 HD-2. It's billed as "The home for music that Sounds Like Texas!" Just like everything else these days, the new KIKK has a Facebook page.

Speaking of Facebook, after I bring you free Houston and Texas media news everyday, help me get more likes on my page. No seriously, it's pretty sad.

KTRK 13's Casey Curry talks engagement & doggie tweets

UPDATE 2013
Casey Curry gets married

I’m teaming up with TXU Energy to help get the word out about the upcoming TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.

That means I'm also promoting the Houston media turkey calling contest (The contest will be 10am, Saturday, November 10th at the Houston Zoo - Butterfly Stage in the Children’s Zoo).

The media winner will have the opportunity to designate a public place to have a tree planted by TXU Energy and the Texas Trees Foundation.

KTRK 13's popular morning meteorologist Casey Curry is a participant in the contest. Recently Curry got engaged so I had to get the scoop on that and find out about her dog's Twitter account.

Mike McGuff: The big news for you is that you were recently engaged! Did you see the proposal coming?

Casey Curry: I did not see Carl’s proposal coming at all! It was a total surprise! He’s been planning it for months and even flew to NYC twice to design my ring. Carl says he kept it a secret and didn't tell anyone, except (my dog) Nanook. Of course, Nanook gave her blessing! We’re both very smitten with him.

Carl and I were actually set up by Eyewitness News Reporter Kevin Quinn and his wife, Elizabeth. Needless to say, Elizabeth is very proud of her matchmaking skills! Their three girls are already lobbying to be flower girls at the wedding!

Anyone who follows you on Twitter knows that your dog also has a Twitter account (@NanookCurry). What's been the reaction to that?

Nanook does have a Twitter account. Some people think it’s strange, but she leads a very interesting life and I think it’s fun to be able to share that with people. She’s getting a doggie chiropractic adjustment this week…I’m sure she’ll have lots to tweet about that! My hope is that people will get a bit of joy out of her tweets. Plus, it’s another way to bring attention to some of the organizations helping our furry friends.

You are involved in a lot of animal issues? Why is that important to you?

I have always loved animals. I feel like it is our job to protect and care for those that are vulnerable, especially children and animals. I am so happy that I have a job that allows me to the time and the public platform to be able to bring awareness to issues that are close to my heart. I also really enjoy volunteering my time with groups like Red Collar Rescue (I have successfully fostered 7 dogs for Red Collar Rescue), Friends of BARC, SNAP, Barrio Dogs & CAP. Of course, my other passion is encouraging young people to pursue careers in math and science. I make many appearances each year at area schools to talk about the value of a solid, well-rounded education that focuses on math and science.

In addition to Curry, other Houston media participants include KHOU 11's Lily Jang, Fox 26 KRIV's Natalie Bomke, Houston Press' Craig Hlavaty, the Houston Chronicle/CBS Radio's Anna-Megan Raley and KUBE 57's Todd Freed.

Is KTRH's Michael Berry becoming a shock jock?

I never thought when I interviewed Michael Berry about his new job at Houston's Clear Channel I would see reports like this.

Craig Hlavaty of Hair Balls says that the 740 KTRH host is leaving politics aside at times to talk about Houston's hottest TV personalities:

Berry seemed to be salivating over the airwaves, using adjectives like the aforementioned "smoking", "knock-out", and the ever-popular "hottie." Anyone tuning in would think that Howard Stern and company had returned to terrestrial radio.

Of course, Dominique Sachse was high on everyone's list. She's like the Marilyn Monroe of Houston news, natch. The other local names included were the recently axed Wendy Corona from Sachse's KPRC Channel 2 news team. READ MORE
Guess Berry is looking to pick up some new topics.
