Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo special guest - the wind

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 2013
We went to the opening of the 2013 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo last night. Toby Keith was the debut concert peformer. The other star of the show was the wind!

Yes, mother nature made a rodeo appearance. She added extra events like hat blowing and body wind surfing...not for the cowboys, but  the show attendees. In fact, as I tweeted last night, the carnival had to be closed early due to the high winds. See my Twitter feed sometimes has real news value.

I have to thank representatives of the Ford Motor Company for our tickets and the fun. Speaking of the auto maker, the Ford Atlas Concept made its debut last night with Toby Keith riding out to the Reliant Stadium center concert stage in it. The Atlas is a concept so that means it offers a glimpse into the future of Ford trucks. In fact, many of its features could end up on the next F-150.

Here are some of the truck's features:
- Dual-Purpose Tailgate Step and Cargo Cradle: The acclaimed Ford Tailgate Step goes a step further by adding the ability to also act as a cargo cradle – lifting and holding extra-long cargo items above the truck and freeing valuable bed space Trailer Backup Assist: This segment-first innovation allows drivers to back a trailer with the twist of a knob. Ford research shows that backing a trailer is often the most intimidating task a truck customer can face
- Dynamic Hitch Assist: Hitching a trailer can be time consuming and difficult. Dynamic Hitch Assist helps precisely line up the truck’s hitch with the trailer coupling, eliminating maneuvering guesswork by showing visual cues in the truck’s center display screen
- 360-Degree Point-of-View Camera: A Ford truck first, the system gives a bird’s-eye view of the truck to help position the vehicle in tight places or when there are obstacles near the truck – such as on a busy job site or grocery store parking lot
- LED Headlamps and Taillamps: Advanced LED lighting offers better road illumination than conventional halogen or HID lights and lasts longer. LED lamps also offer near-instant response, giving valuable extra warning time for following traffic
- LED Cargo Box and Side Mirror Lighting: Advanced, powerful yet efficient LED lighting brightly lights the cargo box and job site after the sun goes down with minimal battery drain compared to standard headlights or plug-in lights
- Hidden Cargo Ramps: Lightweight, durable loading ramps stowed below the cargo box can be quickly removed and set up to assist with loading wheeled items into the bed – from landscaping equipment to dirt bikes
- Active Grille Shutters: Automatic shutters behind the grille stay open when extra engine cooling is needed, such as during low-speed stop-and-go driving or while working in hot weather. The shutters automatically close to improve aerodynamics when cruising on the highway at steady speeds
- Active Wheel Shutters: Automatic shutters in the wheels are hidden to improve style at rest and low speeds, but automatically close at highway speeds to improve aerodynamics. Self-charging batteries use energy from the wheels’ motion to power the shutters
- Drop-Down Front Air Dam: A drop-down front wind spoiler lowers at highway speeds to improve underbody airflow. The air dam is raised at low speeds to improve ground clearance – helpful for off-roading
- Power Running Boards: Auto-deploying running boards help passengers enter the truck at rest and tuck up against the truck when it is moving to improve aerodynamics and ground clearance

Fox 26's Natalie Bomke talks shirtless men and morning news

I’m teaming up with TXU Energy to help get the word out about the upcoming TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.

That means I'm also promoting the Houston media turkey calling contest (The contest will be 10am, Saturday, November 10th at the Houston Zoo - Butterfly Stage in the Children’s Zoo).

The media winner will have the opportunity to designate a public place to have a tree planted by TXU Energy and the Texas Trees Foundation.

KRIV FOX 26 Morning News' Natalie Bomke is a participant in the turkey calling contest. She talks with me about anchoring the morning shift and what she likes about Houston.

Mike McGuff: FOX 26 has a big morning show - in terms of number of hours and the number people on air during those times - how do you all juggle it?

Natalie Bomke: “FOX26 Morning News” isn’t just a 6-hour newscast, it’s a 24-hour operation. When “FOX26 News at 9p.m.” with Don and Melinda wraps up, our 4 and 5am producers arrive. The producers, along with our assignment desk, monitor network news feeds, Twitter, Facebook, local papers, police scanners (and the coffee machine) to provide new content for our morning news program.

There is a producer for each hour of the show, so you can bet that behind every (great) FOX26 anchor is a team of experienced producers developing unique news content for the viewer.

My co-anchor, Chris Stipes and I, deliver the news at 4,5 and 6am. And then, kind of like a rock band, Mike Iscovitz is on weather, Michelle Merhar is on traffic and Ford Atkinson and Andrea Watkins are out on the streets presenting either developing stories or hot topics that impact the viewers. Jose Grinan and Melissa Wilson pick up anchor duty at 7am, and then Melissa and Mike co-anchor “FOX26 Morning News Extra” at 9 a.m. In all, we have a team of about 40 people working on “FOX26 Morning News.” I like to think the imagination of our morning team though makes it more like 140.
(We’re still trying to figure out how Mike can do impressions of nearly all of our co-workers between his weather forecasts.)

Morning television anchors must be ready to wake up the audience and keep the show moving. What's your secret to having energy that early in the morning?

I have been anchoring a morning newscast for six years now and the hours never get any easier. That said, I adore my co-workers and spending 8 hours a day with them is incentive enough to get out of bed. With a six-hour newscast, there is always something to do. My favorite (extra) responsibility is live reporting, especially if it involves firemen, police officers or cats. Not all at the same time though. That would be too much.

Having worked in Houston a few years now, what are your thoughts on the city? Are you feeling settled in?

I love Texas! People complain about the weather, but growing up in Central Illinois, I’d take the heat over waking up in the mid-30’s any day! Using a credit card to scrape ice off your windshield, wearing heels and two pairs of pantyhose, is not my idea of a good time. But, I do miss my family.

I love the patriotism of this city. People here stand their ground. They are proud of their beliefs and their freedoms. This is what unites us as a city. I love the southern cooking, the Cajun influences and life by the Gulf. The Texas economy is strong and there are so many inspiring entrepreneurs in our midst.

But my favorite thing (and no, I’m not getting paid to say this) is my job. I LOVE IT! FOX26 is the best television station I’ve worked for during my career.  I have never met a more caring and compassionate group of people. The reporters genuinely care about the people they profile in their stories.
The engineers and photographers and directors, everyone, is here because news is a career they love. The support is overwhelming.

And, if I had to choose a runner-up “thing” to love about our city, it would be all the men at Memorial Park who think it’s a good idea to run shirtless. I’ve never encountered so many, anywhere else I’ve lived. But, it’s an idea I totally support!

See YOU in the morning!

KPRC's Andy Cerota talks moving stations & new anchor gig

KPRC 2 anchor Andy Cerota will be participating in the media contest this Saturday. Cerota talked with me about moving from one Houston TV station to another (KTRK 13 to KPRC 2) and his new anchor gig.

Mike McGuff: So how is it settling in at a station 'across the street?'

Andy Cerota: Wow, it's been fantastic! I can't believe it's been almost 5 months! I hit the ground running from day one.

I've been afforded some great new opportunities at KPRC and I couldn't have asked for a smoother transition. I've never gone "across the street" before so for me, this is uncharted territory but I am so fortunate.

I went from working with a great group of hard-working, talented journalists to working with another great group of hard-working, talented journalists. It's a win-win situation. Everyone at Local 2 welcomed me into the family with open arms.

How is life as an anchor?

I'm thoroughly enjoying my new role. It's been fun and extremely rewarding on both a personal and professional level.

Lauren, Anthony, Jennifer, Daniel, our executive producer and Mia, our midday producer, made me feel comfortable from the get go. They gave me a big on-air welcome when I started and they've all treated me like a valued member of the team since day one. If it sounds like I'm laying it on thick, guess what, I am!

The days where we've got a lot of big, breaking news have been some of the best, especially during fluid situations that are changing by minute. There have been so many recently. I've grown so much as a journalist and as an anchor in the short time I've been at KPRC because of my colleagues and because of those moments.

------------------------------------------

Thanks Andy!

Also participating from KPRC will be morning reporter Mark Boyle. I'll have a full list of all the participants later this week!

Come by Saturday and see the fun. You can participate in a turkey calling contest too.

KTRK 13's Casey Curry talks engagement & doggie tweets

UPDATE 2013
Casey Curry gets married

KTRK 13's popular morning meteorologist Casey Curry is a participant in the contest. Recently Curry got engaged so I had to get the scoop on that and find out about her dog's Twitter account.

Mike McGuff: The big news for you is that you were recently engaged! Did you see the proposal coming?

Casey Curry: I did not see Carl’s proposal coming at all! It was a total surprise! He’s been planning it for months and even flew to NYC twice to design my ring. Carl says he kept it a secret and didn't tell anyone, except (my dog) Nanook. Of course, Nanook gave her blessing! We’re both very smitten with him.

Carl and I were actually set up by Eyewitness News Reporter Kevin Quinn and his wife, Elizabeth. Needless to say, Elizabeth is very proud of her matchmaking skills! Their three girls are already lobbying to be flower girls at the wedding!

Anyone who follows you on Twitter knows that your dog also has a Twitter account (@NanookCurry). What's been the reaction to that?

Nanook does have a Twitter account. Some people think it’s strange, but she leads a very interesting life and I think it’s fun to be able to share that with people. She’s getting a doggie chiropractic adjustment this week…I’m sure she’ll have lots to tweet about that! My hope is that people will get a bit of joy out of her tweets. Plus, it’s another way to bring attention to some of the organizations helping our furry friends.

You are involved in a lot of animal issues? Why is that important to you?

I have always loved animals. I feel like it is our job to protect and care for those that are vulnerable, especially children and animals. I am so happy that I have a job that allows me to the time and the public platform to be able to bring awareness to issues that are close to my heart. I also really enjoy volunteering my time with groups like Red Collar Rescue (I have successfully fostered 7 dogs for Red Collar Rescue), Friends of BARC, SNAP, Barrio Dogs & CAP. Of course, my other passion is encouraging young people to pursue careers in math and science. I make many appearances each year at area schools to talk about the value of a solid, well-rounded education that focuses on math and science.

In addition to Curry, other Houston media participants include KHOU 11's Lily Jang, Fox 26 KRIV's Natalie Bomke, Houston Press' Craig Hlavaty, the Houston Chronicle/CBS Radio's Anna-Megan Raley and KUBE 57's Todd Freed.

Houston Press' Craig Hlavaty discusses the good and bad of dream jobs

I’m teaming up with TXU Energy to help get the word out about the upcoming TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.

That means I'm also promoting the Houston media turkey calling contest (The contest will be 10am, Saturday, November 10th at the Houston Zoo - Butterfly Stage in the Children’s Zoo).

Houston Press Assistant Music Editor/Staff Writer and KIAH 39 NewsFix contributor Craig Hlavaty has signed up to be a participant in the turkey media contest. He was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer some of questions.

Mike McGuff: Being a music critic/writer is a dream job for many, give us a few favorite moments over the years.

Craig Hlavaty: Since I started scribbling onto a computer about music six years, I have seen and done so much. It's easy to get locked into the moment and forget that you have a dream job. I have met and interviewed some of my idols, and also discovered newfound appreciations for acts that normally I would have dismissed. As for great moments, jeez, it's hard to remember them all, and it's not just because I have a beer or two now and then. A few weeks back I got to hug Willie Nelson. That's the biggest thing that has happened recently. It was like touching God.

Now, all dream jobs usually have some negatives, what are some annoying things about being a music writer your readers don't know about?

If there can be a bad side to my job, it's not having the time or energy to see everything I want. Local and national acts flood this town nightly. Especially the locals. I wish I could hear and see everyone running around out there, but I have to remember that I have a girlfriend, a dog, and a back patio to tend to. Sometimes I need to stay home and lay on the floor and listen to Neil Young to recharge.

How was ACL this year?

ACL was great as always, though my favorite part was seeing Iggy And The Stooges totally baffle and excite the late afternoon crowds. I hope some kids got converted into the Holy Church Of Iggy that day.

Houston media turkey winner gets a tree

More Houston media folks are signing up for the TXU Energy Turkey Trot media turkey calling contest (more posts on that soon). I just blogged about KHOU 11 morning anchor Lily Jang's participation.

As I've told you before, I’m teaming up with TXU Energy to help get the word out about the upcoming TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.

I'm promoting the Houston media turkey calling contest (The contest will be 10am, Saturday, November 10th at the Houston Zoo - Butterfly Stage in the Children’s Zoo).

Here are two big news items involving the contest.

First, the winner of the media turkey calling contest will have the opportunity to designate a public place to have a tree planted by TXU Energy and the Texas Trees Foundation. As part of its commitment to the communities it serves, TXU Energy has a long-standing partnership with the foundation to create healthy communities through tree planting for neighborhood associations, schools, nonprofit organizations and municipalities. Together, the foundation and TXU Energy grow and maintain the TXU Energy Urban Tree Farm and Education Center, the largest nonprofit urban tree farm in the nation.

TXU Energy is excited to give the winner of the media turkey calling contest the opportunity to designate a public place for a tree to be planted. More info here.

Also, Cowboy Dave from 100.3 KILT will be the emcee of the event this year.

KHOU's Lily Jang talks morning drama & chemistry

I’m teaming up with TXU Energy to help get the word out about the upcoming TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.

That means I'm also promoting the Houston media turkey calling contest (The contest will be 10am, Saturday, November 10th at the Houston Zoo - Butterfly Stage in the Children’s Zoo). KHOU 11 morning anchor Lily Jang is one of the participants. Gobble, gobble.

Lily and I emailed about how her new anchor gig is going since joining the Houston Belo station last February.

Mike McGuff: Most Houston morning shows are pretty stable anchor wise. What is it like to be the semi-newly staffed show on the block?

Lily Jang: I've only been back in Houston 7 months so I'm the newest kid on the block. I think my bosses had to work the pieces of the puzzle to get the chemistry juuuuuuust right and I love what they've done. People always ask me if it's a big cat fight with 3 ladies (Katherine Whaley, Chita Johnson and Mia Gradney)in the mornings. Oh my gosh, not at all! We're each other's biggest supporters. There are no egos and no divas. We really are friends and we hang out after work and on weekends and I think you can see that chemistry on TV. People were hoping for some drama. Sorry! Haha

What changes have you all brought to the show? Anything on the horizon?

No more anchor changes that I know of. I'm truly a morning person so I have that natural annoying morning pep! I think the fact that we are all so close, the crosstalk and the energy is just natural and you get the "real us". You can't force chemistry. We're a little family. For viewers, I hope it's like having breakfast with four friends.

Do the ladies on the show keep Ron Trevino in line?

Awwwwwww...we love Ron!!!!!! We're always so chatty and giggly that he can't get a word in edgewise. We've been called everything from "Ron's Angels" to "Ron and the Ronnettes". I think he secretly loves it though........ *wink*.

How cool is it being an anchor in your hometown?

I am so blessed. I've had people from 1st grade come out of the wood works and we've reconnected! It's crazy! Most of the time, it just feels like I never left. I'll be on KHOU mornings til they run me out of this town!!!

Anything else you wanna add?

Yes - I love social media because with TV, I get to be a part of YOUR life. With facebook and twitter, you get to be part of MINE :). I write back to everyone who posts on fb and twitter. Come say hi --> www.facebook.com/KHOULilyJang https://twitter.com/KHOULily

Top Houston media chickens?

I told you before about the Houston media turkey calling contest 10am, Saturday, November 10th at the Houston Zoo. Now I can report things are coming together.

It's all to promote the TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services. The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012.

The Houston media participants are being invited and booked right now, but I understand some of them might be more chicken than turkey? Yeah, apparently some TV types in this town are the wrong type of barnyard animal and not accepting the turkey call invitations!

It's time to talk turkey and quit messing around.

Stay tuned for names of the booked participants and the big host of the event.

The top turkey of Houston media?

Think you know a Houston media person who deserves to be called the top turkey? No, wait hear me out on this one…

I’m teaming up with TXU Energy to help get the word out about the upcoming TXU Energy Turkey Trot benefiting Sheltering Arms Senior Services.

The race takes place at Dillard’s near the Galleria on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012. It’s actually the 20th anniversary of the big event.

To get the word out about the race, TXU Energy and Sheltering Arms Senior Services will be holding a media turkey calling contest 10am, Saturday, November 10th at the Houston Zoo. It will be followed by a general audience turkey calling contest for those of you who are so inclined.

Sheltering Arms Senior Services and TXU Energy are inviting members of the Houston media to “talk turkey.” Stay tuned for the latest in Houston celebrity “gobble, gobble,” including which of those TV, newspaper or radio folks accept the challenge.
