Texas media layoffs in Fort Worth and San Antonio

Texas saw two media layoffs this week: one at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and another at Sinclair Broadcast Group's duopoly of News 4 San Antonio WOAI and FOX 29 San Antonio KABB.

According to the News Guild, more than 90 unionized journalists and media workers across 17 publications were laid off Thursday from McClatchy newspapers (owner of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram) around the United States, including at The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee and The Kansas City Star. 

Fort Worth Star-Telegram opinion editor Ryan J. Rusak, reporter Maven Navarro and Service Journalism Editor Jake Harris were among those affected.

"I’m sorry to say that my position at the Star-Telegram was among those eliminated this week by McClatchy. The outcome was not unexpected, but the specific timing was," posted on X.  "I enjoyed my 7+ years there, got to use some different muscles, wrote some things I'm still proud of and made some good friends. I'm open to roles inside and out of journalism. I assure you that my skills go beyond snarking on this site, though I do think I'm pretty good at that, too."

Meanwhile, in San Antonio, News 4 San Antonio WOAI and FOX 29 San Antonio KABB owner Sinclair told MySA.

"WOAI and KABB are committed to positioning the stations for long-term sustainability and we have made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of positions in our content center [newsroom]," the spokesperson said. "These changes will allow us to operate more efficiently and continue delivering exceptional local news and content to San Antonio viewers. We thank those affected for their contributions to the stations and the community."

I have not seen anything on social media about the Sinclair San Antonio cuts, nor have any on-air folks been removed from the stations' bios sites.

Houston, DFW and San Antonio TV baby news

KPRC 2 Houston reporter Re'Chelle Turner has welcomed a baby girl.

Turner announced the birth of Imani Giselle Echols on September 5, 2026.

“September 5, 2026 forever one of the most important days of our lives!” Turner shared on social media.

Turner said her daughter's entrance into the world wasn't what the family expected, but that Imani is healthy, perfect, and already more loved than she will ever know.

She added that she plans to share more about her birth story when she is ready. For now, Turner said she is simply thanking God for carrying her through and blessing her with a beautiful family.

Turner married Faison Echols on September 4, 2021, in Birmingham, Alabama.

The couple met while taking a Mass Communications class at the University of Alabama. After dating long-distance for seven years and living in five different states, the couple eventually moved to Houston.

Turner joined KPRC 2 in 2020 after working at KARK 4 in Little Rock.

Cleo Greene on maternity leave

Cleo Greene is stepping away from NBC 5 DFW KXAS for maternity leave as she prepares to welcome her second child.

Greene became a mom for the first time in February 2023 when she welcomed her son, Conrad. Now, she is getting ready to add another little one to the family.

Greene admitted that the pregnancy has been difficult lately, saying she has been dealing with a lot of pain. But her love of television, meeting people and telling their stories kept her showing up.

And she certainly made the most of her final day in the studio, knocking out eight interviews.

Greene joined NBC 5 KXAS' lifestyle show Texas Today, which airs weekdays at 11:30 a.m.

Before joining NBC 5, Greene spent several years at WFAA 8 in Dallas-Fort Worth. 

A self-described military brat, Greene joined WFAA in January 2018 after spending nearly three years as a reporter at KSTP-TV 5 Eyewitness News in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Earlier in her career, she reported for WBOC TV16 in Salisbury, Maryland, and WRDW News 12/NBC 26 in Augusta, Georgia.

Greene began her broadcasting career in January 2009 as a feature reporter and anchor for PBS in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.  She graduated from Rowan University.

KSAT San Antonio debuts 1pm newscast

KSAT 12 San Antonio announced the launch of The Rundown, a brand-new afternoon newscast airing weekdays at 1 p.m. on KSAT, KSAT.com, and free on KSAT+. 

The newscast premieres Monday, September 14, 2026, offering viewers another opportunity to stay informed with the latest local news, weather, sports and breaking updates at the time and place that works for them.

Adding The Rundown to KSAT’s news lineup reflects how important local daily news is to our community. By adding an extra half hour of local news, viewers in San Antonio, South Texas, and surrounding areas can stay up to date, informed, and safe during breaking news and weather events, whenever and wherever they occur.

In addition to airing on KSAT, The Rundown will also be available on the free KSAT+ app, where viewers can watch at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m., after KSAT News at Noon and KSAT News at 5 p.m., ensuring viewers have multiple opportunities to stay connected to the day’s top stories.

Kate Devine joins News 4 San Antonio and FOX San Antonio

Kate Devine is heading to Texas, where she will join the news teams at News 4 San Antonio WOAI and FOX San Antonio.

Devine announced the move on Instagram, saying she is “SO excited” to begin the next chapter of her journalism career in San Antonio. 

Devine has spent the past two years working in Wichita, Kansas, at KAKE News, where she has served as a multimedia journalist and fill-in anchor since October 2024.

Before moving to Kansas, Devine built her journalism experience while attending the University of Missouri, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism in August 2024. She spent two years at KOMU 8 & Mid-Missouri CW, the university's NBC-affiliated station, working as a live operator, producer, reporter and anchor.

Devine also gained international journalism experience during her final year at Mizzou. In the summer of 2024, she interned with Newsweek and the public relations firm High Profile Club in London.

Max Dutton joins KSAT 12 San Antonio

Max Dutton has joined KSAT 12 in San Antonio as a weekend morning anchor and reporter.

Dutton began his new role in August 2026, succeeding Sarah Acosta, who left the weekend morning anchor position earlier this month.

Dutton comes to KSAT 12 from KWCH 12 in Wichita, Kansas, where he spent more than three years as a morning anchor and reporter. He joined KWCH in January 2023 and remained there through August 2026.

Before moving into the anchor role at KWCH, Dutton worked as a multimedia journalist at KSNT TV in Topeka from March 2022 to January 2023.

His television career began with an internship at KAKE in Wichita during the summer of 2021.

Dutton is a 2023 graduate of Baker University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism.
