Anthony Yanez will remain KPRC 2 Houston’s chief meteorologist through 2029.
Yanez announced that he has signed a three-year contract extension with KPRC 2, keeping him in the chief meteorologist role for the next three years.
Here is what Yanez posted on social media:
"I have some exciting news to share! I’ve signed a contract extension that will keep me as Chief Meteorologist at KPRC 2 through 2029.
I’m incredibly grateful to KPRC 2 for this commitment and, most of all, to you for the trust you’ve placed in me over the years. When Houston weather gets crazy or dangerous, you invite me into your home and trust me to help keep you and your family safe.
I never take that responsibility for granted. I’m honored to keep doing what I love and serving this incredible community. Thank you, Houston."
Yanez has been a familiar face to Houston viewers for more than two decades.
He first joined KPRC 2 in July 2003 from KRQE 13/KASA FOX 2 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He first went on air in Houston during the station’s coverage of Hurricane Claudette that summer.
Yanez spent more than 11 years with KPRC 2 before leaving Houston in 2015 for KNBC in Los Angeles, where he served as the station’s noon and 5 p.m. meteorologist. In Southern California, he worked alongside Daniella Guzman, who later returned to Houston.
In 2021, Yanez returned to KPRC 2 as part of the station’s morning weather team, replacing Britta Merwin after her departure for FOX Weather.
Then, in June 2024, KPRC 2 announced that Yanez would move to the evening newscasts and become the station’s chief meteorologist, succeeding longtime chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley following his retirement.
With more than 25 years of broadcast news experience, Yanez holds seals of approval from both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association.
His work has also earned recognition outside of Houston. In 2020, the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California named his work the Best Weathercast.
In other news, new KPRC 2 meteorologist Collin Myers starts Friday the 18th and will be filling in for Yanez.
