Ryan shared the news on social media, reflecting on his time at the station and the relationships he built with his colleagues and viewers.
“Personal News: I’m leaving my post as the @KENS5 Sports Anchor. It’s been the ultimate privilege to represent this station, continuing a legacy that’s spanned over 75 years. To have led the Sports Department for the last 4+ years is one of the honors of my life. Hopefully they were as much fun for you, as they were for me…..Every. Single. Night.”
Ryan also thanked his KENS colleagues, including anchors Isis Romero, Henry Ramos and Bill Taylor, for the chemistry they developed on the station's evening newscasts.
“I got lucky when I came to KENS. They sat the kid next to Isis, Henry, and my man Billy T on the prime-time desk. The chemistry came quick. We’ve learned, we’ve listened, and we’ve definitely laughed. The memories we made on set I’ll have forever.”
Ryan joined KENS 5 in late June 2022 as its evening sports anchor, taking over the position previously held by longtime sports anchor Joe Reinagel, who retired.
During his time at KENS, Ryan anchored the station's weeknight 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. sportscasts, along with Sunday evening coverage. He also led the sports department for more than four years.
A Chicago native, Ryan came to San Antonio from KVIA ABC-7 in El Paso, where he worked as a weekend sports anchor and reporter from June 2019 to June 2022.
While in El Paso, Ryan covered professional and college sports, including NBA games, March Madness, bowl games, and Texas state tournaments. He also handled play-by-play commentary for UTEP and New Mexico State athletics.
His reporting extended beyond sports, including coverage of the 2019 El Paso Walmart mass shooting. In 2020, El Paso Inc. readers named him the city's "Best Sports Anchor."
Before entering television news, Ryan worked as a production assistant at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, from August 2017 to May 2019. There, he worked with ESPN personalities he had grown up watching and helped launch the network's sports betting program, Daily Wager.
Ryan also gained early media experience as a news content intern with Univision Communications in South Florida and a summer news intern at FOX 32 Chicago.
A former college tennis player, Ryan attended DePauw University in Indiana, where he earned a degree in communications with a minor in Spanish. He was a member of the men's tennis team and worked at the university's WGRE radio station as a sports reporter, host and play-by-play broadcaster for basketball and baseball.
