KHOU 11 sports reporter/anchor Daniel Gotera is back with another compelling look at a Houston high school football program and this one is both tragic and uplifting.
In the half-hour special, Santa Fe Strong, KHOU 11 Sports was the only television sports department granted behind the scenes access to the Santa Fe High School football team as the coaches and players prepared for their first game since the school shooting in May of 2018.
It is the story of a town which faced unspeakable horror and how the community is coming together to heal. At one moment, the special is inspirational, at other times, when there are remembrances of victims, very sad.
"I think this special showcases the town and the emotions that they've gone through in overcoming such a big tragedy," Gotera told mikemcguff.com. "It was an honor to bring their fight to life in this show."
Gotera and KHOU photographer Mike Orta spent a lot of time in Santa Fe following the Santa Fe Indians team as it geared up for its first game since 10 people lost their lives. Additional game day photography was taken by KHOU photographer Derek Felton.
Last December, Gotera and his team produced the Lone Star EMMY nominated The Program: Pearland Oilers which kicked off what I hope is a continuation on the inside story of Houston-area football teams.
"This special would not have been possible without the help of Santa Fe ISD, the Indians coaching staff and players, and the support of KHOU management who allows us to bring their story to life," Gotera added.
The show will air for the first time on Saturday, September 29th at 12:30pm, but you can watch it right now below.
