KHOU's Sally Ramirez to executive produce CNBC's “The News With Shepard Smith”

After announcing KHOU 11 departure in June, KHOU 11 news director Sally Ramirez to serve as CNBC's “The News With Shepard Smith” executive producer

KHOU 11 news director Sally Ramirez is heading to New York to be the Executive Producer of “The News With Shepard Smith” on CNBC which premieres Wednesday, September 30th at 6pm CT (official release here).

Earlier this summer, I broke the news that Ramirez and her husband/KHOU anchor, Russ Lewis, were leaving Houston and the TEGNA owned station after four and a half years.

"When I announced back in June that I was leaving KHOU and looking for my next challenge, I was flattered by all the opportunities that presented themselves," Ramirez told mikemcguff.com. "I chose this one because I couldn’t resist a chance to build something brand new at the network level."

- Russ Lewis to retire from KHOU

This is the first time I can think of a Houston TV news manager at any local station leaving for a network job. If there is one I don't know about or am just not remembering, I know you will correct me! :)

--------

UPDATE
See, I told you someone would know. Larry Weidman, who succeeded Ray Miller as KPRC 2's news director, left for NBC News in 1980 spending 25 years there, as Bureau Chief in Houston, Tel Aviv and Rome and Producer/Correspondent in the Dallas Bureau.

He adds that KHOU 11 news director Alan Parcell left for CBS New York. Weidman adds that Parcell worked as a KPRC 2 reporter in the 1970s and was one of the first live shots with the fabled Big 2 Instant News Camera.

KTRK abc13 senior manager David Glodt left for ABC News New York.

--------

Before you start contacting me, Sure I realize that many on-air talent have left KHOU for the national level. Of course Dan Rather left for CBS in the 1960s.

In more recent times, anchor Mia Gradney fill-in anchored CBS News's weekend newscast, reporter Vicente Arenas joined CBS News, reporter Gabe Gutierrez jumped to NBC News Atlanta and reporter Mark Greenblatt joined ABC News.

In my interactions with her, Ramirez has said she will always be a newscast producer at heart - her first job in the broadcasting business. By joining CNBC and Smith, she will be able to still flex those muscles in the ultimate role for a television journalist.

"I’m honored to be a part of the CNBC team that will launch the first general news program in the network’s history – especially with a well-respected veteran journalist like Shepard Smith leading the way," Ramirez told me. "This is the perfect job for me. It combines my passion for producing, my creativity and my decades of experience covering big stories."

Ramirez certainly took her time at KHOU and made it something special. Not only did she arrive in Houston to help rebuild channel 11's ratings, but she also actually was forced to help rebuild the entire station thanks to Hurricane Harvey.

At the same time, Ramirez kept the KHOU tradition of earning journalism awards.

Ramirez joined KHOU from sister-station KGW Portland in 2016, jumping from assistant news director in Oregon to news director in Houston.

Lewis followed her a few months later and joined the station as its morning anchor.

What you might not realize is that Ramirez and Lewis actually met each other at their first TV job. Ramirez left Chicago to start her television news career as a producer at KTSM El Paso. Lewis was already there as a reporter. Somehow since then, they actually managed to work together, find jobs in the same market for the most part and actually remain married! Trust me, TV news romance stories are rare and mostly ephemeral.

The TV couple raised two daughters who are now attending college in Oregon.

And speaking of Oregon, that is where Lewis announced he is going after he leaves Houston. Lewis says he will be working in his family's businesses which is developing properties.
This will enable him to split his time between Oregon and New York City with Ramirez.

Ramirez's last day at KHOU will be August 28th. Turns out that Lewis's last day of his contract ends the same day.

In the memo that Ramirez sent to the KHOU newsroom announcing her new CNBC position, which was obtained by mikemcguff.com, Ramirez told her loyal staff that she was comfortable leaving KHOU right now because the newsroom was the strongest it had been in years. She urged her staff to take their competitive advantage and keep the ratings success momentum and keep it going.

Here is the full memo:

I want to share some news about my next move!

I have accepted a job at CNBC, as the Executive Producer of “The News with Shepard Smith”.

I am VERY excited to help launch this new, primetime network newscast.

The show debuts at the end of September, which means I need to get to New York ASAP.

My last day at KHOU will be this Friday, August 28th.

When NBC called me recently about this opportunity, I quickly learned a lot of people know KHOU’s story.

They know the great, award-winning work we produce.

They know we are a resilient newsroom.

They know no one covers breaking news better than we do.

I am counting on you guys to continue to build on our legacy.

I want each of you to know how much my 4 ½ years here at KHOU have meant to me – professionally and personally.

You were my family before my family arrived in Houston.

Together we rebuilt KHOU- literally and figuratively.

We’ve worked side-by-side covering some of the biggest stories of our careers and we did it under less than ideal conditions.

I will NEVER forget those challenging times.

As difficult as they were, we not only survived, we thrived. We came out stronger!

When COVID hit, we were already battle tested, and it shows.

I am comfortable leaving KHOU right now, because the newsroom is the strongest it’s been in years!

We are competitive again. We have momentum. We are seeing ratings success.

DO NOT LET COVID OR ANYTHING ELSE KEEP YOU FROM BUILDING ON THAT MOMENTUM!

We’ve worked too hard to get here.

THANK YOU for allowing to be your team leader.

It’s been an honor, a privilege and I’ve had a BLAST!

Vicente Arenas jumps to CBS News from KHOU

KHOU 11 weekend anchor Vicente Arenas to CBS News Miami

UPDATE Sep. 14, 2015
Vicente Arenas Out at CBS News

KHOU 11 weekend anchor Vicente Arenas is heading off to CBS News Miami as a national correspondent. Arenas will be the first KHOU reporter to go straight to CBS News as a national correspondent since Dan Rather according to an internal memo sent to the KHOU newsroom by news director Philip Bruce that was obtained by mikemcguff.com:

Vicente Arenas
Vicente Arenas
Vicente Arenas has done so many great things for KHOU. As weekend anchor, his affection for and knowledge of Houston is a key reason why we typically dominate the ratings each Saturday and Sunday. As a reporter, he brings not only years of experience but respect and empathy for the people he covers. And as a community ambassador for KHOU, Vicente represents us in a way that always builds bridges and reflects the very best qualities we have to offer those we serve.

Beyond all that, Vicente is a true gentleman, a good soul and a friend. Which makes it so hard to say goodbye.

One week from today, Vicente leaves KHOU to start a great new adventure---as the Miami based national correspondent for CBS News. This is a huge opportunity and guarantees that Vicente will have a front row seat to history, in Cuba, Central and South America and across the US.

We are so proud of Vicente and so happy that he’ll still be in the family, reporting on the CBS Evening News and all the network’s news broadcasts.

KHOU and our old Belo Family have a legacy of producing great network talent—that includes the guy in the big chair at CBS, Scott Pelley. We’re proud of Anna Werner, our former I-Team reporter, who’s now a national correspondent at CBS News; of Gabe Gutierrez, Janet Shamlian and Charles Hadlock (all at NBC News) and Mark Greenblatt (who went to ABC).

But there’s something very special about KHOU’s connection to CBS. We have many KHOU alums working there now behind the scenes. And now Vicente joins the ranks.

Here’s an interesting fact---Vicente Arenas is the first KHOU reporter to go directly to CBS News as a national correspondent since Dan Rather.

He’s not gone yet---and even though the news director typically is the last to know anything about what’s happening in the newsroom, I’m betting there’ll be a party.

Congratulations Vicente!

According to his bio, Arenas joined KHOU 11 News in January 2003 as a weekend anchor and weekday reporter. He previously worked at WOAI in San Antonio as the weekday morning anchor/consumer reporter and as a reporter for KTRK abc13.

Arenas, an award winning journalist, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Journalism.

TVSpy reports Arenas starts his new gig with CBS March 17.

Mark Greenblatt to Scripps TV stations

Mark Greenblatt, former KHOU 11 investigative reporter, leaves ABC News for Scripps TV stations

In January 2012, KHOU 11 investigative guy Mark Greenblatt went to ABC News. Now we learn he is leaving the network and going back to local with Scripps TV stations:

Award-winning investigative reporter Mark Greenblatt, will join The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP) as a national investigative correspondent for the Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C., effective April 15.

Formerly with ABC News as a national correspondent, Greenblatt specializes in computer-assisted reporting and the mining of public data through the Freedom of Information Act. His goal is compelling multiple-platform content that results in reform and broad benefit for communities.

"The Scripps Howard News Service is a journalism powerhouse committed to investigative reporting and video story-telling with both a national and local perspective across all of our media platforms and for all of our local TV and newspaper markets," said Brian Lawlor , senior vice president of Scripps television. "Mark is an amazing addition to the team. He is tenacious, yet patient with his investigations. He is thorough and resourceful and is widely respected for his abilities to hunt down a story that enacts change."

With ABC News, Greenblatt contributed to Good Morning America, World News and Nightline. He also wrote stories for ABCNews.com, filed live and taped radio reports for radio stations across the country and reported live for ABC affiliates nationwide and the BBC.

Before moving to network news, Greenblatt spent seven years as an investigative reporter at KHOU-TV in Houston, Texas. He received numerous national awards for his investigations including the Livingston Award, duPont-Columbia, two national Edward R. Murrow Awards, the George Foster Peabody Award, National Headliner, National Emmy and an IRE Medal.

He also gained experience working at WBBH-TV in Fort Myers, Fla.; KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and KOMU-TV in Columbia, Mo.

He graduated in 2000 from the University of Missouri's School of Journalism.

Greenblatt and his wife, Regina, will move to D.C. where he will base his work for SHNS. He is the co-director for a national program to mentor investigative reporters and editors. He has volunteered for arts organizations and a program to motivate children to make a difference.

Houston TV pregnancies, engagements and job moves

Think of this post like the last of your Thanksgiving leftovers that are still edible since I've hardly been posting the last few weeks.

EXPECTING

If you've noticed that Fox 26 KRIV's Traffic Authority Michelle Merhar has a baby bump when you see her on TV, you are not alone. Lots of questions about a possible pregnancy on her Facebook page and Merhar has responded, "Nope, not your imagination. A baby girl is on the way...due in March!" Congrats! (Thanks you know who you are)

MOVING

The KTRK 13 assignments weekend desk will be taking weekends off from now on (at least at the ABC owned station). Assignment Editor Ryan Rios is moving to CNN. Rios, a former channel 39 assignments guy, is joining fellow KIAH alum Travis Sattiewhite who has been at Jeff Zucker's new network for a few years now. Christiana Onita Olojo (Sic 'Em Bears) is also moving on. (Thanks Stephanie)

Changes over at KHOU 11's Great Day Houston. Associate Producer Suzanne Badger moves to radio at News 92 FM KROI to be an editor. Alexis Jones takes over Badger's duties at Great Day. (Thanks to PR Fairy @farbulous)

KHOU 11's Doug Miller tweeted a few weeks ago that the "biggest news out of city council meeting: Chris Moran is leaving the Chronicle, following his wife to Gainesville, FL."

Former Houston-based Hit Video USA VJ, Fox 26 KRIV reporter and KHOU 11 assignments guy Todd Duplantis is shifting in the PR world. He started The Duplantis Agency with his wife but now she is riding solo on that one. That's because Duplantis took a Public Relations Director gig with HCC Southwest.

MARRIAGE

I hear a rumor that former KHOU 11 investigative reporter and current ABC News correspondent Mark Greenblatt is getting hitched. (Thanks to PR Fairy @farbulous)

Remember, if you want to be featured on the blog, you have to let me know. I can't read every Houston TV staffer's Facebook and Twitter feeds all day. Even I am not that good.

KHOU 11's Courtney Zubowski joins the I-Team

The KHOU I-Team is adding a new reporter to its ranks and station management didn't have to go far to find her.

Current KHOU reporter Courtney Zubowski will step into the new slot a KHOU publicity representative has confirmed to me.

"I'm looking forward to this new opportunity," Zubowski told mikemcguff.com. "KHOU has some of the best talent around and I'm proud to be part of the team."

Zubowski joined KHOU 11 in January of 2008. She came from another Belo station, KTVK in Phoenix. Before that she anchored and reported at KFDM in Beaumont. She graduated from the University of Southern California's Annenberg School of Communication and Houston's Bellaire High School.

I'm personally excited about Zubowski's promotion. Why? I think I might have mentioned before that Zubowski and I were in the same elementary class together!

The KHOU I-Team has gone through some changes over the last few years. We saw the unit add a bunch of reporters in 2010 (the unit's members were eventually dropped down to the original number). Then the award winning Mark Greenblatt left for ABC News to be replaced with Scott Noll ‏from WREG Memphis.

KHOU 11 hires Scott Noll ‏from WREG Memphis

UPDATE MAY 07, 2018
Scott Noll exits KHOU

KHOU 11 has hired Scott Noll, an award-winning investigative reporter with WREG-TV in Memphis, TN for the last three years.

"For years I've followed the great investigative work being done in Houston," Noll told mikemcguff.com. "I'm looking forward to continuing that tradition and joining a team of top-notch journalists at KHOU 11 News."

According to Noll's LinkedIn page, prior to WREG, he's worked as a reporter at WLUC-TV, KSPR-TV, WFMZ-TV and WWMT-TV. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University.

This hire appears to fill the position in the KHOU investigative left by Mark Greenblatt who departed for ABC News.

Noll starts next Monday 4/16.

Dan Rather talks KHOU 11 in 1960 + Hurricane Carla

Gabe Gutierrez is the most recent and before him Mark Greenblatt, but the most famous KHOU 11 reporter to go to the networks is Dan Rather.

The folks at Mediabistro put together a great interview with the former CBS News anchor. In it, Rather remembers his KHOU 11 days and his big break with Hurricane Carla. This is such a good video, I wanted to put it in its own post.

One of the funniest lines from Dan is: "Their [KHOU's] ratings were so poor [in 1960 when he arrived], that we were at least the fifth or sixth station in a three station market. I was brought in to be the news director, which basically meant I was the director of myself, because we had no other full-time employees."

Gabe Gutierrez to NBC News Atlanta

Gabe Gutierrez surprised me today. My pals at TV Spy and TV Newser are reporting the KHOU 11 Houston City Hall reporter is outta here. He's off to the big leagues at NBC News Atlanta.

That means he is following in the footsteps of former KHOU 11 investigative colleague Mark Greenblatt who recently left for a position at ABC News New York.

Gabe Gutierrez only joined KHOU 11 in March of 2010 as a general assignment reporter. Before Houston, he was a weekend morning anchor and reporter at WJRT-TV, the former KTRK 13 ABC owned sister station in Flint, Michigan.

Gutierrez joins NBC in two weeks says TV Newser.

Wow and the KHOU bon voyage list just keeps growing and growing. Who is next? Good thing there are always new spots in Midtown (near KHOU) opening up for goodbye parties.

KHOU 11's Mark Greenblatt joins ABC News

I heard KHOU 11 investigative guy Mark Greenblatt was going network. I asked him to confirm but never heard back. Now we know. ABC News fills us in:

Mark Greenblatt joins ABC News as a correspondent in New York and will file for all platforms. He comes to us from KHOU-TV where he worked for seven years as an investigative reporter, winning many awards including the duPont-Columbia, Peabody, National Headliner, National Emmy and two National Murrows.

Over the course of his career, Mark’s investigative reports have led newscasts at WBBH-TV in Fort Myers, FL; KOAA-TV in Colorado Springs, CO; and KOMU-TV in Columbia, MO.

Mark credits his considerable reporting gifts to his parents. His late father spoke 16 languages fluently, and worked in military intelligence before retiring to the civilian sector. His mother worked as a paralegal for much of her professional career and always kept her teaching license because of her love of English and writing.

While in Houston, Mark spent significant time volunteering with arts organizations and speaking to children about making a difference. He enjoys road cycling and recently completed the MS150, a 180-mile two-day ride from Houston to Austin. A native of Denver, Mark is an avid Boston Red Sox fan and looks forward to rooting for his team even when he lands in the Big Apple. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri's School of Journalism.

Drink water in Texas? You might want to watch this

KHOU 11's Mark Greenblatt let us know he is going to have a big special tonight at 7pm on Houston's drinking water.

A Matter of Risk: Radiation, Drinking Water, and Deception is the culmination of a year's worth of work by KHOU on an important health topic. We flew across the country (from Boston, to Washington, to New York, to Iowa, and of course drove throughout Texas) to research and report this story. The program's aim is to inform, not alarm people about a health risk they may have been exposed to- which our news organization believes they have a right to know about. It includes just a ton of new material- and never before seen footage (including an interview with a university professor who was appointed by the President to advise the federal government on radiation matters, and is also a current member of the EPA's radiation advisory committee, which is part of the EPA's formal Science Advisory Board). We also go into great detail about attempts to censor our reports or intimidate us from continuing on… airing it all out there for the public to see.

KHOU 11 honored with 3rd straight ‘Overall Excellence’ Murrow Award and more

KHOU 11 and KHOU.com continue to rack up the awards. The station won three Regional Murrows and two Headliners Foundation of Texas Awards. This is the third year in a row I've written a post like this so I'll let the info KHOU 11 sent me take it from here:

The Radio Television Digital News Association has once again recognized KHOU 11 with the Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in the Texas-Oklahoma Region. This is the third consecutive year for KHOU to receive this distinction, having gone on to win the National Edward R. Murrow in this category in 2010.

“The Murrow Award for Overall Excellence recognizes the talent of each individual at KHOU,” said Susan McEldoon, KHOU 11 President and General Manager. “To win three years in a row truly highlights the exemplary standard of news our team upholds day after day.”

In all, KHOU won three Regional Murrow Awards. Photojournalist Todd Rogenthien was honored for the second consecutive year in the category of Best Use of Video, and the award for Best Series went to reporter Jeremy Rogalski, photojournalist Keith Tomshe and executive producer David Raziq for the series “Drowning in Neglect.”

The Headliners Foundation of Texas also recently announced winners of its Charles E. Green Awards for excellence in Journalism, naming KHOU’s Kevin Reece as Best Reporter and presenting KHOU.com with the award for Best Online/Special Content for its digital coverage of the I-Team investigation surrounding radiation in the Houston water supply.

The Headliners Foundation works in partnership with the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (TAPB). Each year the TAPB recognizes excellence and achievement in journalism with awards in various categories. In March, KHOU received 20 TAPB Awards, eight of which were Division winners that went on to compete for the Headliners Foundation distinction.

“The commitment to journalism runs deep throughout the newsroom – on air and online,” said Philip Bruce, KHOU 11 Executive News Director. “It is humbling to be honored by organizations so respected in our industry.”

A breakdown of recent KHOU 11 awards is as follows:

Edward R. Murrow Awards – Region 6:
Overall Excellence: KHOU-TV
Use of Video: Todd Rogenthien, Photojournalist
Series: Drowning in Neglect – Jeremy Rogalski, Keith Tomshe, David Raziq

740 KTRH's Michael Berry comments on Houston TV news

740 KTRH's Michael Berry knows the Houston media scene. Either from being a radio talk show host or sitting on the Houston city council, Berry has witnessed all sides.

That's why I want to spotlight a comment Berry left on my blog about the Houston TV news investigative world. It was on my post "KTRK 13 Undercover's Wayne Dolcefino says stop copying my work."

Here it is:

Wayne Dolcefino does the best investigative pieces in Houston. Period. He doesn't always do the best "investigations", but he presents them in the most entertaining style. Say what you will, his style is distinctive, unique, and entertaining. He tells stories, in a manner that makes you wonder if he isn't half laughing while he does so. He's been the best in town for years.

I will say, though, that Greenblatt at 11 has done some good work, as has Jeremy Rogalski on frequent occasion of late. Rogalski's pieces have been notable in the past year. Channel 2's Arnold & Dean do some good work, but it seems they have to file too many to be as in-depth.

Give Wayne his due: imitation is the greatest form of flattery. Ask anyone inside the news biz, and they'll tell you that Wayne's pieces are must-watch.

I sat on City Council for 6 years, and I'll tell you that elected officials quaked when he walked in. There was fear that he had targeted you, because once he did he would lay it all bare.

I've seen how he goes about investigating, the extent to which he chases down sources, and I admire how he weaves it all together. His multiple day pieces are good for ratings, and they're just good tv.

Mike, thanks for writing about this. This is the sort of thing that people need to know about, and maybe this will end the ugly practice.
