Irika Sargent to Chicago's WBBM & Vicente Arenas out at CBS News

Two former Houston weekend TV anchors Irika Sargent (KPRC 2) and Vicente Arenas (KHOU 11) change gigs

TVNewser is reporting that former KHOU 11 weekend anchor Vicente Arenas (formerly of WOAI San Antonio, KTRK Houston) is no longer with CBS News.

In February 2014, Arenas became the first KHOU reporter to go straight to CBS News as a national correspondent since Dan Rather according to an internal KHOU memo.

No word on why Arenas split the CBS News Miami correspondent gig, but TVNewser reports the network is looking for a replacement.

In other former Houston talent news, former KPRC 2 weekend anchor Irika Sargent has been named co-anchor of the CBS 2 Chicago WBBM weekday evening news. And get this, she's joining former KPRC 2 anchor Rob Johnson behind the Windy City anchor desk at 5, 6 and 10 p.m.

She is joining CBS Chicago from WFOR Miami where she's co-anchored the station's weekday early evening and late newscasts since May 2014 when she left H-Town. Heck, Sargent even took a turn hosting CBS' 'The Talk.'

So my thinking is, if you are a KPRC weekend anchor, then you can write your ticket to the big time!

Think about this...former KPRC 2 weekend anchor Daniella Guzman is now the NBC4 KNBC Los Angeles morning anchor and former KPRC 2 anchor weekend anchor Phillip Mena is with ABC News.

So anyone willing to bet on where current KPRC 2 weekend anchors Syan Rhodes and Jonathan Martinez will be in a few years?

Sargent, who is a former attorney, starts in Chicago, October 19.

  1. I was curious why have not seen Vicente in some time with the Network. Not a long stint. Glad to see Irika is working way through.

  2. Has anybody informed Sharron Melton of these openings, I wonder? She would be one of the more deserving of an opportunity like this!

  3. I hope Daniella returns to Grown again. Forget LA, come back to your hometown!

  4. Not surprised both Sargent & Arenas moved on from their respective jobs!

Congratulations to Irika on moving to the Windy City!

    1. We are going to miss Irika Sargent here in Miami. She is one of the all time best anchors I've had the opportunity to watch every night (and I'm 76). Good luck to Irika!

  5. Irika was awesome and Mena was great as well. However, not all of KPRC's weekend anchors have prospered. I can think of two who were abysmal failures. Courtney Zavala was annoying and always turned stories into her own self promotion or a commentary on her son. And Jen Reyna was a complete and utter train wreck as she paraded her incompetence, inability to read, and low intelligence (Who can forget the classic "what advice do you have for people who keep alligators as pets?")

  6. Anon, KPRC-TV has been going downhill since the greats like Ron Stone, etc., left!

  7. Syan will likely stay for a while. Johnathan will probably be in DFW in 2017.

  8. Sad to see Vincente leaving the big time. Hope he lands on his feet at another major network job. I always enjoyed his reporting here in Houston and wish him well in his future endeavors.

  9. I have not even watched KPRC on a regular basis fully since days of Ron Stone, Bill Balleza, Linda Lorelle, Doug Johnson with the weather.

I did watch Irika on weekends and did at times Vicente with Shern Min at KTRK and KHOU both.

I watched KTRK in the 80's as well when Dave, Sherra and the Late Alan Hemburger and Don Nelson with Traffic, and Ed Brandon with the Weather and can't remember who else did the weather was a decent guy but he passed last year I think. But have Watched more with KHOU probably as that is the one family watches. But there have been some reporters have loved and ones that have not over the years with all the networks or main Anchors, or more.
