After securing a new weekend anchor last October, KPRC 2 now has to fill the seat next to it.

Weekend anchor Phillip Mena is jumping to the big time at ABC News as a correspondent reports Deadline Hollywood.

"Phillip is a gifted storyteller and Emmy-nominated reporter with experience producing, writing, shooting and editing," wrote ABC News President James Goldston in a memo.

Mena put his three years in at KPRC after starting in the TV biz in his hometown of El Paso. Marty Robbins would be proud. Out west he anchored for KTSM, KDBC and KVEO in the Rio Grande Valley area.

He attended the University of Texas at El Paso and Arizona State University.

Mena starts in the Big Apple May 4th.

  2. Not surprised he's leaving KPRC-TV! It's appearing everyone is leaving the Dominique Sasche dictatorship in droves.

  3. Him leaving was just a matter of time, he's young and a good reporter.

  4. Nothing against Mena but he wasnt really good at Ch. 2. Not sure how he got that job? He must've sent a tape from when he was in El Paso.

  5. I am seeing different people get these calls for the national network or places that make me think they need someone that can speak Bilingual as well.

But we shall see who gets the Weekend call now with the one that came in October. It is crazy the changes with all networks and people leaving. Get so used to certain reporters after so long when you don't see them or even the Anchors. But maybe someone good will come in and make weekends great

    1. Expect more people to leave KPRC-TV very soon.

I don't see Simone Eli sticking around Houston that long, this is a stepping stone for her!

    3. Simone Eli is pretty young so she's still learning. I also don't see her staying for long either, I have a feeling she has ambitions for ESPN. I bet she'll probably take Britt McHenry's job in case she screws up again.

    4. Eli couldn't take a Wal Mart Greeter's job. She's terrible.

  12. Mena has a terrible accent, not sure why a major network would go with that. His enunciation of words is exaggerated. Good luck with that
