Mia Gradney to anchor CBS Weekend News Easter weekend

KHOU 11 5, 6 and 10pm anchor Mia Gradney anchoring for CBS News' weekend newscasts

KHOU 11 evening anchor Mia Gradney (5, 6 and 10pm) will be anchoring the CBS network weekend news this Saturday and Sunday.

"I'm honored to represent our very special @KHOU family," Gradney tweeted. "I look forward to sharing our work with everyone across the country. We're hopeful we can bring a bit of good news your way this holiday weekend."

Gradney opened her Saturday show from the KHOU 11 studios. There were even some nice beauty shots of Houston at the end of the broadcast.

Houstonians should be proud. And what a tremendous honor for Gradney to be chosen for this assignment. The first thing I think is that Gradney was chosen over anchors at the CBS' owned television stations in major markets since, KHOU is a CBS affiliate, but actually owned by TEGNA.

It turns out that CBS owned stations have been helping with CBS Weekend News in the past weeks. Dallas - Fort Worth KTVT CBS 11 anchor Doug Dunbar has filled-in for the network's weekend show.

To show you what a big deal this is, and I know I will be corrected if wrong, but the last journalist from Houston that anchored weekend network news was Jessica Savitch...right? Savitch also worked for channel 11, but actually ended up anchoring the weekend NBC Nightly News years after she left Houston.

I should mention that former KPRC anchor Phillip Mena now anchors NBC's Early Today, but that is not a weekend newscast.

Congrats Mia, well deserved!

Gradney started her television career as a writer and production assistant for abc13 KTRK in 1998.

She moved on to work as as anchor reporter for KAVU Victoria, KBMT Beaumont/Port Arthur and CW39 KIAH.

She is a graduate of Sam Houston State University with a degree in Radio/Television and a specialty track in broadcast news.

After CW39 switched its traditional news to the anchor-less newscast called NewsFix, Gradney jumped ship to KHOU in July 2012 where she started on the morning show and worked her way up to evening anchor with Len Cannon (who also has national experience as a Dateline NBC correspondent).

(Thanks Robin!)
