Newscenter25 KAVU's announces new anchor lineup

VICTORIA, Texas – One of the longest serving sports anchors in the country and the second longest serving sports journalist in Texas is passing the torch to the next generation. Don Brubaker joined the sports department at KAVU-TV in 1984. Brubaker is now serving as the main 6 and 10 p.m. news anchor.

“Don Brubaker is a huge part of the rich history at this legacy station”, said news director James Muñoz. “Don has guided our viewers through the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to be an integral part of this entire organization.”

"Back in March, our news director, James Munoz, asked if I would be interested in switching from sports to news anchor," Brubaker added. "I was honored to be asked. We tried it and with a lot of help from our great news team, it turned out well. Then the pandemic hit, and sports events got canceled. The news anchoring continued, and the response from viewers has been fantastic. I can't thank you enough for that. I am now making a permanent transition from sports to news anchoring, and I look forward to that, especially in an election year."

Don Brubaker Day in Victoria, Texas is August 27, 2020 as declared by Mayor Rawley McCoy last year.

KAVU-TV did not have to look far for Brubaker’s replacement. Sunrise morning anchor Geno Perez expressed interest in the position and accepted an offer this week.

“I am extremely grateful to have this opportunity. Sports has been a part of my life since the age of four and continuing to my college career as a wide receiver. The fact that I get to cover the sports I love for a living is a blessing and a dream come true. I hope my love for sports will be shown in my work. Victoria has been my home for a short time, but I am looking forward to growing here and seeing what else Victoria has to offer,” Perez said.

Geno Perez joined KAVU-TV last October. He joins weekend sports anchor Tania Tchalikian. This team is already planning a 30-minute pre-season football program and preparing for Friday Football Fever this fall.

KAVU Victoria has new leadership

Daniel Aguilar takes over as Newscenter 25 KAVU Victoria GM, James Munoz as news director


Some big changes at Newscenter 25 KAVU Victoria with a newly named general manager and news director.

Daniel R. Aguilar has confirmed to mikemcguff.com that he is the new KAVU GM.

“I’m excited to be a part of a great company, Morgan Murphy Media and am eager to become a part of a treasured community like Victoria and its surrounding communities," Aguilar told mikemcguff.com. "The Victoria Television Group will expand our reach within the communities we serve daily.”

He takes over for Jeff Pryor who retired earlier this year after more than 20 years of service.

Former KRIS Corpus Christi general manager Greg McAlister has been serving as interim GM until the permanent hire was made.

Aguilar comes from TENGA station Fox West Texas KIDY - KXVA San Angelo where he served as president and general manager for nearly three years.

He worked for KIII Corpus Christi for nearly 8 years before that.

KAVU morning anchor James Munoz can now take the interim part of his news director title off because he officially has the job. Munoz added interim news director duties to his job back in February.

"I am honored to take on this new role with Morgan Murphy Media," Munoz told mikemcguff.com. "I look forward to serving our team of bright journalists and expanding KAVU's presence in the Crossroads and online. I enjoyed working alongside interim General Manager Greg McAlister and I am excited to have our new General Manager Danny Aguilar on board."

Munoz replaces Roxann Fisher who left earlier this year.

Since 1998, Muñoz has had a very Texas television news focused career having worked at KVII Amarillo, KIII Corpus Christi, KTRE Lufkin, KSAN San Angelo, KENS San Antonio and KWES Midland.

A simple video of two KHOU staffers working at KAVU Victoria in the past sends McGuff on an obsessive quest to connect the dots - STOP HIM before he hurts himself!

KHOU 11 reporter Janelle Bludau went into the Newscenter 25 KAVU Victoria vault to pull out some old footage of her time anchoring there with current channel 11 meteorologist and colleague Erika Lopez.

This video probably would have been from around 2014 because that was the year the two overlapped at KAVU.

Bludau began her career as a web producer at the Victoria station but wrote in her bio she was quickly promoted to an on-air role. In this video, Bludau was the station's weekend anchor.

Lopez also appears to have started her TV career at KAVU where she worked as the station's weekend meteorologist and reporter during the week.

The duo would move on to other jobs - Bludau to CBS/NBC Duopoly KGPE/KSEE Fresno, Lopez to Weather Nation TV in Denver, CO.

In April 2019, they were brought back together by KHOU news director Sally Ramirez when Lopez came to Houston from KVUE Austin.

Now this type of thing can quickly become one of those six degrees of separation things minus the Bacon. I would imagine that abc13 KTRK morning consumer reporter Chelsey Hernandez was the KAVU morning anchor around this time too.

Oh...and another six degrees thing, Bludau was born and raised in Hallettsville, TX. What other famous Houston TV anchor was raised in the same town?

Give up?

The answer is 740 KTRH morning anchor (and former abc13 KTRK anchor) Shara Fryer!

OK, I need to stop there. This six degrees bit might start getting out of hand!

James Muñoz leaves 25 News Now KAVU Victoria

James Muñoz is leaving his position as news director and anchor at 25 News Now KAVU in Victoria on December 17, 2025, and will relocate to Houston.

"I've enjoyed my time at KAVU-TV, and I'm excited about what awaits me in Houston," Muñoz told mikemcguff.com.  "I've always wanted to live in Houston and look forward to connecting with family and friends there more often. My partner and I will make a few important family trips, and I'll be looking for that job with my name on it."

Muñoz has been with KAVU since 2017, first as a morning anchor, then as a news director in 2020.

Before Victoria, Muñoz served as a news director for NewsWest9 KWES Midland-Odessa.

San Antonio viewers will recognize Muñoz from his reporting days with KENS 5 from 2003 to 2014.

He previously served in roles ranging from news director to anchor/reporter at KSAN San Angelo, KTRE 9 Lufkin, 3News KIII Corpus Christi, and ABC7 KVII Amarillo.

A continuous learner and newsroom leadership advocate, Muñoz completed the Master Class for Media Managers at Loyola University Chicago in 2025 and is a 2024 Carole Kneeland Project Fellow. His additional training includes executive communications at the Annette Strauss Institute, newsroom leadership at the Poynter Institute, and a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from Texas Tech University.

Muñoz previously served on the Rape Crisis Center in San Antonio's board and is an active member of the Society of Professional Journalists, the San Antonio Hispanic Journalists Association, and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Ozzy Mora leaving KAVU Victoria

Azalea “Ozzy” Mora announced she is leaving KAVU Victoria where she works as an evening news anchor and reporter.

Ozzy Mora joins KLAS 8 Las Vegas

The bilingual Mora also anchors cut-ins for KVTX/KUNU which are Telemundo and Univision affiliates.

"I’m a huge believer in taking a moment for self-reflection," Mora tweeted.  "I have been truly blessed. I thank the universe, life, family and my colleagues for all the love. I will be leaving KAVU as your anchor. I am so heartbroken by my decision to leave."

In a subsequent tweet, Mora says she is moving to anchor in Midland-Odessa.  I hear Mora is joining Big 2 News - KMID. UPDATE:  She is indeed joining Big 2 News KMID and FOX 24 News as an evening anchor for the Permian Basin.

The Los Angeles native started with KAVU in 2019. 

Some readers might recognize Mora from her other television work too. In the last few years, she has hosted such shows as the CW's "Mysteries Decoded" and the Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures."

Mora got her start in local TV news with 12NEWS KPNX Phoenix, Arizona where she was a social media producer/host/MMJ.

While in college, the University of La Verne grad also worked as an online assistant producer for KABC Los Angeles's On the Red Carpet Online. She also was a guest co-host for Breal.TV/Cypress Hill Online.  That must have been an insane in the membrane experience!

A’Darius McCormick joins KAVU Victoria

A’Darius McCormick joins KAVU-TV 25 News Now as multi-skilled journalist.

“A’Darius is coming into his first newsroom job with all the skills needed,” said 25 News Now news director James Muñoz. “We are glad he selected us as his employer of choice.”

A’Darius graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi. He considers fashion content one of his hobbies and he likes writing short stories and poetry. He’d even like to write a book one day.

“I am more than excited to join an amazing newsroom and share everything I know with 25 News Now. I do have things to learn, but Victoria is the perfect place for me to grow. I can't wait to start my career in the beautiful state of Texas,” McCormick said.

James Doughty joins KAVU Victoria, Texas

Former KENS 5 San Antonio reporter James Doughty joins KAVU Victoria, Texas as morning anchor

Former KENS 5 San Antonio reporter James Doughty (aka James Muñoz) is now the morning anchor at KAVU in Victoria, Texas.

He even has a memorable start date at the station too.

Doughty started working July 21st, which just so happens to be the station's 35th birthday.

It would have been cool if the station rolled out a giant cake into the newsroom for him to jump out of as an introduction to the staff.

Scratch that...that might only be cool to me.

"Rockport is in our coverage area," Doughty told mikemcguff.com. "My 3rd great grandfather, James Murray Doughty was one of the founding fathers of Rockport. He was also first sheriff of Refugio County another area KAVU covers. I will be using my birth name James Doughty."

Speaking of family, Doughty wrote a book called Some Monument To Last about finding his family in unique circumstances after interviewing Walter Cronkite.

Doughty previously worked as the news director for NewsWest 9 KWES Midland/Odessa.

Howie Gordon leaves, Lupe Zapata joins KAVU Victoria

Howie Gordon, the 25 News Now KAVU Victoria weekend meteorologist, has left the station for a chief meteorologist job in Chico, California.

Gordon was with KAVU for three years.

TV viewers across the US might recognize Gordon as a contestant on CBS' "Big Brother" season six in 2005 and "Big Brother All-Star."

The Mississippi State University grad previously worked as a morning meteorologist for Alaska's News Source KTUU 2 starting in 2017 and KODE 12 Joplin, Missouri, as a meteorologist/reporter from 2015-2017.

Trey Meynig takes over as full-time weekend meteorologist with fill-in help from Houston freelance meteorologist Scott Pitney.

Lupe Zapata joins 25 News Now KAVU, his hometown station, as a reporter after working at Spectrum News 1 Dallas as a multimedia journalist/human interest reporter.

Zapata joined Spectrum News in August 2020.

The Lone Star EMMY winner got his TV start with ABC Big 2 News KMID Midland-Odessa, where he was an anchor/MSJ.

A University of North Texas grad, Zapata anchored for the school's ntTV Nightly News. 

Maclovio Perez joins KAVU 25 News Now as chief meteorologist

Maclovio Perez returns to Texas television weather as the 25 News Now KAVU Victoria chief meteorologist.

"I look forward to working with the KAVU news staff and I appreciate James Munoz's confidence in me," Perez told mikemcguff.com. "Obviously, I am well aware of Gulf Coast weather and by most experts we expect it to be an active hurricane season. We'll be ready."

He is "well aware of Gulf Coast weather" because Perez was with KRIS 6 Corpus Christi for nearly 10 years until he retired from TV news in 2020.

Perez's previous 40 year broadcasting career included meteorology positions with News 4 San Antonio WOAI, KCBS 2 Los Angeles (KNXT when he was hired) and KENS 5 San Antonio.

Before returning to school to earn a degree in meteorology, the University of Texas at Austin grad was a reporter for KMOL San Antonio (now back to the original WOAI call letters).

Just last year in 2022, Perez ran for Texas' 27th Congressional District seat. 

"I also look forward to collaborating with the newsroom on other stories that would be of interest to the Crossroads region," Perez told me. "I found out that retirement is for the birds! And I am ready to get back into the swing. It's in my blood. Having worked in varied communities, I am excited to get to know the folks in the Crossroads region. We are all proud Texans!"

In other news, I hear Perez and his wife are expecting their first grandchild soon too!

He's a founding member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Geno Perez leaves KAVU Victoria

Geno Perez, the sports director of 25 News Now KAVU Victoria, known for his positivity and trademark "Howdy Crossroads," has left Texas for a new job. 

A source tells mikemcguff.com Perez is leaving to join Spectrum News One Wisconsin out of Appleton where he will be a sports/news reporter.

Perez joined KAVU in 2019 as its morning anchor.

In 2020, he transitioned to sports director when Don Brubaker moved to the weeknight anchor position.

No stranger to sports himself, Perez played wide receiver for Hardin-Simmions University in Abilene.  He transferred to Texas State University where he graduated and worked for the school's radio station KTSW 89.9.  

Before TV news, Perez worked as a sports reporter for a local newspaper. 

KAVU Victoria devotes broadcast day to vaccine adoption

Reaching viewers and listeners in 11 states, Morgan Murphy Media broadcast stations committed its resources over one day to fight vaccine hesitancy. 

The company-wide effort, labeled “Vaccine Day,” included phone banks, digital outreach and no-appointment, drop-in vaccination clinics to increase the rate of adoption in the local communities served by the stations.

“We know the single greatest thing we can do to get our communities back to normal is get more people vaccinated,” said Brian Burns, Morgan Murphy Media executive vice president and chief operating officer. “This is what we do. Devoting a single day to this effort is right in line with our 131-year heritage of community service and part of our broadcaster DNA.”

Vaccine adoption rates are lagging in rural areas and in underserved populations across the country. The CDC estimates up to 30% of people in some areas are hesitant to get the vaccine over safety and efficacy concerns. Others just have not made time to get a shot because it is not convenient. 

“We provided a quick and easy way to get questions answered by medical experts and a simple way to get a vaccine without an appointment,” Burns said.

With local health partners, the stations collectively fielded more than 1,000 phone calls. Two stations hosted on-site, no-appointment vaccinations clinics while others showcased community drop-in clinics.

The campaign included two digital exclusives. “Dose of Information” posts quickly and easily dispelled myths about the vaccine and were shared across social media. And “Why I got vaccinated” offered personal stories about what motivated people to get the shot.

“Vaccine Day” was also highlighted on the national OTT platform VUit and available across the country to anyone with a connected TV or mobile phone.

Karina Garcia joins WAVY 10 Norfolk

Karina Garcia, the evening anchor of 25 News Now KAVU Victoria, is joining WAVY 10 Norfolk, Virginia as weekend anchor.

Shawna Currie returns to 25 News Now to take over for Garcia.

Garcia joined KAVU as evening news co-anchor with Don Brubaker in August 2022.

A native Houstonian and graduate of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Garcia worked as a news anchor, reporter, and producer for the school's Island Waves student newspaper, winning several awards, including the Texas Intercollegiate Press (TIPA) TV Announcing Award.

Amaya Norman, who recently graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi, is joining KAVU as an anchor. She just made her debut on the 5 p.m. newscast with Brubaker.

Fox 26 KRIV loses two managers to other stations

Two Fox 26 KRIV managers move on to becomes news directors at other stations

Fox 26 KRIV loses two of its managers to other stations. Both are leaving as news directors the Houston Fox owned and operated station announced on Facebook.

"A bittersweet day in the FOX 26 Houston newsroom with the announcement that executive producer Geoff (left) will be leaving for a news director position in Charlotte, N.C. while assignments desk manager Chris (right) has accepted a news director position in Victoria, Texas. We will miss you both!"

If you are looking for last names to go with the first ones mentioned above, they are executive producer Geoffrey Roth and assignments manager and photographer Chris McDonald.

I'll try to find out where they are going...

Ask and you shall receive. The folks at TVSpy notified me that Geoff Roth has been named vice president of local content at WJZY-WMYT, Fox’s duopoly in Charlotte.

I'm pretty sure that Victoria only has KAVU as a full TV station. And sure enough, TAB has a news director position listed for KAVU. So I am pretty sure Chris McDonald is the new news director of KAVU.

Chelsey Hernandez has joined KENS 5 San Antonio as a producer and reporter.

Before SA, Hernandez worked in her hometown "The Crossroads." Hernandez was a morning anchor/producer at the KAVU Newscenter 25 in Victoria, TX.

Besides anchoring at KAVU, Hernandez also worked as a general assignment reporter and morning entertainment reporter/producer for the station.

Hernandez is a graduate of The University of Texas at San Antonio, so she is no stranger to the Alamo City.

Adam Seibel promoted to KAVU weekend anchor

Adam Seibel is being promoted to the 25 News Now KAVU Victoria weekend anchor seat.

"Adam Seibel is one of those rare broadcast journalists with mad skills who can do it all," news director James Muñoz said in a statement. "Adam is also in tune with our online users and is able to engage with our viewers in a unique way."

He will produce and anchor four newscasts along with the weekend team of sports anchor Tania Tchalikian and meteorologist Trey Meynig.

Seibel joined KAVU June 20, 2021 as a multi-skilled journalist (MSJ). 

"I am honored and excited to be the weekend anchor and producer here at 25 News Now in Victoria," Seibel added.  "Being here close to a year now I've enjoyed Victoria and the people who live here. The feeling of being a part of the South Texas community here is amazing. The community has really welcomed me and made me feel like I've been here my whole life, thank you for that."

The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native graduated from the University of Oklahoma in December 2019 with a Bachelors degree in journalism and a minor in environmental sustainability.

"You can still count on me to bring you the latest news stories during the week too as I'll still work as a reporter during the weekdays, so I'm only a phone call or email away if you ever need anything or have a news tip,” Seibel said.

Parker Cox joins KAVU 25 News Now Victoria

Parker Cox joins the 25 News Now KAVU Victoria weather department as morning meteorologist starting July 24, 2023.

Parker Cox joins KCEN 6 Waco

"I have extensive experience in storm chasing," Cox said in a statement issued to mikemcguff.com.  "I have witnessed various weather extremes, including the snowpocalypse a couple of years ago. I have been affected by Hurricane Harvey, witnessed 4-inch hail (which destroyed my first car), encountered several tornado-warned supercells, and experienced temperatures exceeding 111 degrees with heat indices in the 120s."

Not only will Cox handle the weather forecasting, but he will also co-anchor with "Sunrise" anchor Carolina Astrain.

The Dallas-area native earned his Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science from Texas A&M University.

Cox also recently obtained advanced training and certification from the National Weather Service for professional severe storm spotting/reporting.

In other KAVU news, Sarah Porter joins the station as its new digital content manager, effective July 31st. 

While in school, the McKendree University grad played on the women's volleyball team. 

She interned with WCIA 3 in Champaign, Illinois.

Zach Brown joins WCHS ABC 8 / Fox 11 in Charleston

Zach Brown joins WCHS ABC 8 / Fox 11 Charleston, West Virginia, from 25 News Now KAVU Victoria.

Brown started with KAVU a few years ago as a reporter.  He later moved to the weekend sports anchor sports position.

The Houston native is a University of Oklahoma grad.

Adam Seibel left 25 News Now KAVU Victoria in April 2024 with his co-workers singing his praises on-air for his last day.

Here is a portion of what  the weekend anchor posted on Facebook:

"Thank you to everyone who watched me and supported our local TV news. 

You all have been great. I plan to move back to my hometown of Oklahoma City. 

I'm not in news right now but whenever I get back in the business you can be sure I'll keep you guys in the loop."

Seibel joined KAVU on June 20, 2021 as a multi-skilled journalist (MSJ). He was later promoted to weekend anchor in April 2022.

He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma.
