KVUE 24 Austin Chief Meteorologist Albert Ramon is heading to News Nation on WGN America

So where is Chief Meteorologist Albert Ramon going after he leaves KVUE 24 Austin after a decade?

He just announced announced May 9th on Facebook he was leaving Austin and the TEGNA Texas station:

Hey friends, I have a life announcement to share with you all:

After an amazing 10 years in Austin, I will be leaving KVUE later this month. My last day on-air will be Wednesday, May 20th.

Working at KVUE has been the honor of a lifetime, especially the last 4 years serving as chief meteorologist. I love this station and this community so much, the decision to leave was not an easy one.

I've been blessed to make so many close friends here and work for managers who truly care about my career. This has been a dream job.

Earlier this year I told the management team that I would only leave KVUE for an opportunity I couldn't pass up and that's what has happened. My new employers are planning a big announcement, so I'll be able to tell you all the details about my next career move soon. The good news is that the new gig will still allow me to cover Texas weather extensively.

Thank you for allowing me to be a source for your weather information for the last decade here in Central Texas. I'm grateful for your support and trust over the years, but this isn't goodbye. You'll still be able to see me and follow me on social media for weather updates, especially when the weather turns rough.

KVUE says goodbye to Chief Meteorologist Albert Ramon

Now Scott Jones at FTVLive is reporting that Ramon is heading to Nexstar Media Group's News Nation on WGN America. Yep, gone are the days of my youth watching Bozo and Cubs game from ChicagoLand.

Deadline is reporting the new primetime cable block of news will premiere from Chicago's WGN studios on September 1, 2020.

As for Ramon's new national gig in Chicago, Nexstar hasn't made an official announcement yet.

Ramon started at KVUE almost 11 years ago. In October of 2009 he was named the weekend morning/evening meteorologist/reporter eventually moving up to the chief job in April of 2016.

The Beeville native started in broadcasting in 2004 at K99 Country KRYS-FM Corpus Christi. Just a few months later he joined CBS 10 KZTV Corpus where he also worked his way up to chief meteorologist.

Earlier in 2020, Ramon was actually splitting his time at KVUE and TEGNA sister station KIII Corpus Christi where he was filling in for Bill Vessey who suffered a hemorrhagic stroke.

A few months ago there were big changes when KVUE chief meteorologist Albert Ramon left for Nexstar Media Group's News Nation on WGN America and KHOU 11 meteorologist Erika Lopez returned to fill Ramon's duties.

The Central Texas ABC affiliate also says meteorologist Jason Mikell will move to the 4:30am anchor role and eventually traffic anchor when that need returns.

In the meantime, meteorologist Hunter Williams will work both weekend mornings and nights until Mikell's weather team slot successor is hired.

Mays joined KVUE in 2004 as weekend sports anchor. Before returning to Austin (he studies journalism at the University of Texas at Austin), Mays was Sports Director at News 9 San Antonio and Sports Director at KTRE Lufkin.

Rush, a native Houstonian, joined KVUE in 2017 from KSDK NewsChannel 5 Saint Louis, Missouri after six years.

Well that was fast! KVUE Austin just announced that KHOU 11 meteorologist Erika Lopez is moving back to the Austin TEGNA station and becoming its chief meteorologist beginning Monday, June 22.

Lopez takes over for former chief met Albert Ramon who left KVUE for the upcoming News Nation on WGN America.

KVUE named long-time weatherman Albert Ramon as its Chief Meteorologist. Ramon is well known to Austin, having served the last 6 years as meteorologist of KVUE’s award-winning morning newscast, “Daybreak.”

Trina Quinn, who handles the midday shift on 98.9 KUTX-FM, told colleagues she plans to leave the station.

Managing editor Kevin Kline has left KXAN to write for Irish Tech News.

KVUE 24 Austin to start morning news at 4:30am

We've seen the shift to 4:30am morning news start times in Houston and Dallas and now KVUE 24 is doing it in Austin. KVUE News Daybreak will extend its morning news by a half hour running from 4:30am to 7am.

“This underscores our continued commitment to serving the changing needs of our viewers,” says KVUE president and general manager Patti C Smith.

"KVUE sets the standard for news excellence in Austin. By adding a 4:30 am newscast, we will provide news, weather and information at a time when more and more people are depending on us," said KVUE news director Frank Volpicella. "Expanding our news is our commitment to our viewers, that KVUE is indeed Austin's news station."

The station says KVUE News Daybreak with Melissa Gale, Olga Campos and meteorologist Albert Ramon is currently the most watched morning news and information program in Austin.

Look for the time change this Fall.

Janel Forte joins NewsNation

Janel Forte left KHOU 11 to join Nexstar's NewsNation as an Atlanta-based correspondent in spring of 2021.  UPDATE:  In April 2022, Forte announced she has left the news channel.

Forte came to Houston's channel 11 as a reporter in 2018 from WLOX Biloxi, MS where she was the weekend morning anchor and and Jackson County bureau chief.

Prior to WLOX, the Cornell University grad and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism master's degree recipient also worked as:

Allison Harris joins NewsNation

Allison Harris, a former reporter for FOX 4 KDFW in Dallas - Fort Worth, has joined the national cable news show NewsNation.  

The native Texan is now the NewsNation DC Correspondent reporting on the White House, Supreme Court and Capitol Hill.

“Allison is a fantastic reporter with great instincts, and I’m looking forward to having her join the team as we build a news bureau based on sound journalism and fearless reporting,” NewsNation Washington Bureau Chief Mike Viqueira said in a Nexstar Media Group press release. “She’ll help us ramp up our efforts to provide viewers with the fact-based information they need to understand what is going on in the U.S. capital during an especially important time in our nation’s history.”

Harris left the FOX owned Dallas station in November of 2020 for Washington DC.

So why did Harris leave Texas TV and move to our nation's capital? 

Well, part of the answer comes from an Instagram post by NBC and MSNBC reporter Garrett Haake who posted in November, "So glad [Allison]’s finally joining me in DC."

Turns out Haake and Harris are a couple. Haake is based out of Washington.

And Houstonians might be interested to know that Haake is a graduate of Klein High School in Houston and SMU.

Harris joined channel 4 Dallas in 2016. 

Prior to KDFW, Harris worked for KOTV 6 Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Her reporting there was honored with a a regional Edward R. Murrow award and an Emmy nomination. While at KOTV, she went live for CBS Evening News.

The McKinney, Texas native started her television news career at KXII Sherman.  

While earning her degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma, Harris was named the top collegiate news anchor in the country by the Broadcast Education Association.  She also studied journalism in London and Paris at CNN International, Sky News, BBC and The Guardian.

Loyal readers of my blog will know that KHOU 11 reporter Janel Forte joined NewsNation in the last month.

KVUE 24 Austin chief meteorologist Albert Ramon left Texas last summer to start NewsNation.

Alex Caprariello leaves KXAN for NewsNation

Alex Caprariello, KXAN Austin's lead education reporter, is heading to Los Angeles to work for Nexstar's (KXAN owner) NewsNation. 

Here is what he tweeted:

"The last few years at @KXAN_News have been so special to me. I got the chance to work with incredibly talented and respected journalists in what could be the best city in America. But the time has come for me to move on.

I feel like I’ve covered everything! From hurricanes, to police protests, to navigating school safely during a global pandemic. I know I’m moving forward in my career with real, gritty experience — exactly what I was looking for when I first joined this shop years ago.

It is that exact experience that gives me confidence to move forward to an even larger stage. In two weeks, I’ll be moving to Los Angeles to work for News Nation, a national cable network. I’ll be a West Coast correspondent, covering breaking news along the entire coast.

I owe thank yous to so many people. To my KXAN managers, colleagues & friends. To my supportive partner, Sarah, who will be joining me in LA. And to the amazing city of Austin: thank you for letting me share your stories. It’s been an honor to call this place home. I’ll be back!"

Caprariello, who joined KXAN in 2018, previously worked for KNWA/KFTA Fayetteville, Arkansas as a weekend anchor, senior reporter and producer.

The Arizona State University grad also earned a master’s degree in Journalism from the school's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Other Texas TV journalists who have left the Lone Star State for NewsNation include KVUE Austin's Albert Ramon, FOX 4 KDFW's Allison Harris and KHOU 11's Janel Forte.

Erika Lopez is pregnant

Erika Lopez, KVUE Austin chief meteorologist, paused her weather forecast for a minute the other day to announce she is pregnant.

"I have some big news, I have butterflies, but I don't know if they're butterflies or if it's the baby kicking in my belly," Lopez said on the 5pm KUVE newscast to anchors Terri Gruca and Bryan Mays.

Both news anchors guessed the baby is a boy.

Well, as they say, roll the video tape, because what followed was one of the more interesting gender reveals I have ever witnessed (embedded below in this post).

"There's 11 hard eggs and one raw egg," Lopez described in the pre-recorded gender reveal video with her husband Otto Staudt.  "We're going to take turns smashing it on her face and then the raw egg will be the gender."

Well, Lopez was the "lucky one" to find the correct egg and smash it in her forehead.

For those who are wondering, Lopez is having a baby boy to add to the KVUE news family. 

"I just had a feeling," Mays added. "You seem like a great boy mom. A great mom regardless. But it seems like you would be a great little boy, mom."

"I am totally going to be a crazy soccer mom," Lopez replied.  "Like, I cannot wait to be in the sidelines just yelling and embarrassing my boy."

Lopez's baby boy is due in December 2021.

Staudt and Lopez were married in 2019 while the meteorologist worked for KVUE's TEGNA sister-station KHOU 11 Houston. 

Lopez returned to KVUE to be chief meteorologist in 2020 when Albert Ramon left for News Nation.

David Yeomans joins CBS Chicago

David Yeomans announced he is leaving his position as chief meteorologist for KXAN Austin this week.  His last Austin on-air date will be Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

UPDATE: In late March, Yeomans announced he is joining CBS 2 Chicago WBBM. He will be working with a past Austin TV competitor, former KVUE chief meteorologist Albert Ramon.

Here is what Yeomans posted on Facebook when leaving Austin, Texas:

"It’s a bittersweet day as I close one chapter of my life and open another. After 12 wonderful, fulfilling years at KXAN, my last day on-air in Austin is Wednesday. 

I can’t say where I’m headed quite yet, but I’ll tell you as soon as I’m able. Know that it had to be an incredible opportunity to get me to leave my hometown, and that’s exactly what it is. While I’ll miss Lake Austin, the Greenbelt and lots of other things about this city, I am really excited for a new challenge and continued growth. 

I want to thank everyone at KXAN for taking a chance on a guy with zero experience straight out of graduate school. My intern tapes were rough! While I still have much to learn, I have grown so much during my time at the station and have been privileged to earn your trust during dangerous weather and to cover important climate change and water issues in our community. 

The success of a TV meteorologist is entirely in the hands of viewers like you — so as I always say, thank you for watching."

Yeomans joined KXAN in June 2012 and took over the chief met job from Jim Spencer in 2021. 

And guess what? Spencer will return to fill in evening weather until Yeoman's replacement can be hired. 

The longtime Austinite, who attended Westlake High School, has picked up three Lone Star EMMY Awards and the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society.

After being promoted to chief, Yeomans was selected as GQ’s meteorology expert, where he took a look at movies and explained if the depicted weather events were realistic or not.

Yeomans was engaged to be married in 2021 and married wife, Izzy Wagner, on November 19, 2022.

Speaking of Spencer, Yeomans interned with the former chief meteorologist as a University of Miami student! He also interned with Spectrum News Austin and CBS4 WFOR Miami.

In addition to earning a University of Miami Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology, Yeomans also earned his Master’s Degree in Meteorology from the same school. 

For his Master's thesis, Yeomans researched hurricane formation and flew on a NOAA Hurricane Hunter flight. He later presented his findings at the 2012, 2013, and 2016 American Meteorological Society conventions.

Speaking her baby, recently we saw Lopez do the KVUE weather with Odie!

Odie was born to Lopez and husband Otto Staudt (of the Staudt Brothers fame) in December 2021. Lopez did a great gender reveal on-air.

Lopez did two tour of duties at KVUE Austin.  

Austin television viewers first saw Lopez on Daybreak from 2017 to 2019.

Lopez then joined KHOU 11 which is KVUE's TEGNA Houston sister-station.  In Houston, Lopez was the noon and 4pm meteorologist. 

When Albert Ramon left KVUE for News Nation, Lopez returned to KVUE as chief meteorologist in 2020.

Prior to Austin, Lopez worked for Weather Nation out of Denver, Colorado.

The Arizona State University grad and Phoenix native got her start in the TV biz at KAVU Victoria.
