Janel Forte joins NewsNation

Janel Forte left KHOU 11 to join Nexstar's NewsNation as an Atlanta-based correspondent in spring of 2021.  UPDATE:  In April 2022, Forte announced she has left the news channel.

“The opening of our Atlanta bureau is a strategic step in supporting our mission of bringing Americans fact-based news that represents a full range of perspectives across the nation,” said Susan Tully, Senior Vice President, Local Content Development for Nexstar Media Inc in a release. “Janel is a talented reporter with experience keeping viewers informed about major events happening across the South, and we’re looking forward to putting her on-the-ground reporting skills to work in our new bureau.”

Forte came to Houston's channel 11 as a reporter in 2018 from WLOX Biloxi, MS where she was the weekend morning anchor and and Jackson County bureau chief.

Prior to WLOX, the Cornell University grad and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism master's degree recipient also worked as:

KXAS 5 hires Mark Hayes from WAGA

New KXAS 5 morning anchor announced. WAGA Atlanta's Mark Hayes is moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth TV news market:

KXAS-TV today announced that Mark Hayes will co-anchor NBC 5 News Today from 4:30 a.m. – 7 a.m. weekdays with Deborah Ferguson, starting in May.

Hayes has been the morning news anchor at WAGA-TV in Atlanta, for the past ten years. He was previously an anchor/reporter at WXYZ-TV in Detroit and WBAL-TV in Baltimore. Early in his career, Hayes was a television reporter at KMGH in Denver and WOKR in Rochester, NY.

"When a viewer turns on the news in the morning, Mark is the kind of person they want to see," said Susan Tully, NBC 5 Vice President of News. "He has a warm delivery and makes the early wake-up just a little more enjoyable. Mark had a deeply loyal following in Atlanta because of his personable approach to giving viewers their first news of the day."

KXAS 5' David Finfrock cuts down; Rick Mitchell steps in

NBC 5 / KXAS-TV today announced that Chief Meteorologist David Finfrock has signed a long-term agreement with NBC 5. Additionally, Finfrock said he will retire at the agreement's end, after a more than 40-year career with the station.

NBC 5 also announced that meteorologist Rick Mitchell will join NBC 5 News at 10 p.m. and NBC 5 First at Four (4 p.m.), Monday-Friday. Finfrock will continue to forecast during NBC 5 News at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., weekdays. Meteorologist Grant Johnston will transition to NBC 5 Today each weekday morning from 5-7 a.m. while Meteorologist Samantha Davies will continue to forecast weather from 4:30-5:00 a.m., each weekday. NBC 5 Meteorologist Remeisha Shade will remain doing the weekend morning newscasts.

"I was fresh out of college when Harold Taft hired me, and I never dreamed I'd spend my entire career at one television station," said Finfrock. "I'm not ready to leave yet, but I've been thinking about retirement for several years, and I'm pleased this agreement offers me the opportunity to finish my career right where it began – with the first television station in Texas."

Finfrock is only NBC 5's second chief meteorologist in the station's 64-year history. After receiving his meteorology degree from Texas A&M University in 1975, he joined KXAS-TV and was mentored by legendary North Texas meteorologist, Harold Taft. Finfrock was named chief meteorologist in 1991.

"NBC 5 takes great pride in bringing viewers the area's best weather coverage to prepare them for what lies ahead," said Susan Tully, NBC 5 Vice President of News. "David's experience and dedication to accurate forecasting is unparalleled in North Texas television. The fact that he will be here to guide us through the coming transition is invaluable."

"We're incredibly fortunate to add Rick Mitchell, a chief meteorologist from Oklahoma City, to an expert team that includes Grant, Samantha, Remeisha and me," said Finfrock. "I've always insisted that everyone we hire be a professional meteorologist, and you won't find a team more professional than this anywhere."

Mitchell has been chief meteorologist at KOCO-TV, Oklahoma City, OK, since 1994. Previously, he forecasted weather at WOI-TV in Des Moines, IA, and Accu-Weather, in State College, PA. He has been recognized for his severe weather forecasting experiences from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press. Mitchell's team of meteorologists at KOCO-TV was recognized by then Oklahoma governor, Frank Keating, for their exceptional work covering tornados in May 1999. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from the University of Nebraska.

Mitchell said, "I am thrilled to have this opportunity to be on the air each weekday at 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. The combination of the rich history of KXAS-TV, and the chance to be part of their wonderful weather team makes this a dream job for me. While I've loved my time in Oklahoma City, I look forward to making new friends, and facing new challenges in Texas."

Finfrock and Mitchell will work together transitioning responsibilities for the NBC 5 News at 10 p.m. and NBC 5 First at Four in the coming weeks.

Johnston will assume his weekday morning assignment on NBC 5 News Today immediately.

Johnston joined NBC 5 in 2010 and has appeared primarily on weekend evening newscasts, but recently filled in on NBC 5 Today from 5-7 a.m. weekdays. He came to NBC 5 from KFOR-TV, in Oklahoma City, OK. Johnston graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Atmospheric Science and was recognized for his undergraduate research on hurricanes and El Nino.

NBC 5 is in the process of locating a meteorologist to assume responsibilities for weekend evening newscasts.

NBC 5 KXAS wins two Edward R. Murrow Awards

NBC 5 KXAS-TV has won two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for newscast and writing.

The newscast, “Remembering a Father, and a Fan,” featured NBC 5 team coverage of Shannon Stone, the Texas Rangers fan who died at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington while trying to catch a souvenir ball for his son. In a highly emotional, carefully crafted tribute to Stone, NBC 5 talked to the people who knew Stone as a firefighter and friend, along with the Rangers players and fans that mourned his loss during their first night
back at the stadium.

The writing award was for a compilation of work by NBC 5 Video Journalist Andrew Tanielian, which included feature reports on a man whose home is decorated with beer cans, a taxi-driving Santa and local minor league hockey fans.

“Telling local stories well is what we try to do every day,” said Susan Tully, NBC 5 Vice President of News. “So being recognized by our industry peers is some confirmation that our efforts are paying off. What’s most important is that viewers value what they see on-air and online from NBC 5.”

The Edward R. Murrow Awards were presented in large market television category by the Radio Television Digital News Association for Region 6, which includes Texas and Oklahoma.

NBC5 KXAS names Deanna Dewberry Consumer/Investigative Reporter & anchor

NBC 5 / KXAS-TV today announced that Deanna Dewberry will be its new consumer/investigative reporter and anchor NBC 5's 6:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, newscast on digital channel 5.2. Dewberry joined the station earlier this month.

Dewberry will focus on uncovering issues important to North Texas consumers while Scott Friedman will continue to lead NBC 5's investigative unit.

Dewberry has been a news anchor and investigative reporter at WISH-TV in Indianapolis, Indiana, for the past seven years. She was previously an anchor/reporter at Texas Cable News and WFAA in Dallas, KTHV in Little Rock, Arkansas, as well as KLBK and KCBD in Lubbock.

She earned her degree in journalism from the University of Texas in Austin and is a four-time Emmy Award winner, including three Lower Great Lakes Chapter Emmy Awards in 2011 for an investigative report, a feature report and anchoring. She has also been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists, Associated Press, National Association of Black Journalists, Texas Speech Communication Association and the American Cancer Society.

"With the successful launch of our investigative team earlier this year, the timing is perfect for an experienced reporter like Deanna to take on issues very practical to us as consumers," said Susan Tully, NBC 5 Vice President of News.

"I love what I do for a living and believe in the service provided a community by strong investigative reporting. Having the opportunity to join the extraordinary team of journalists at NBC 5 and do what I love in my native Texas is an absolute joy. It's good to be home," said Dewberry.

North Texas' only 6:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, local newscast can be found over-the-air on channel 5.2 or the following cable channels: Time Warner 365, Verizon 460, Charter 105, One Source 801, GEUS 126, Grande 280 and Suddenlink 110/128/731.
