Sara Donchey joins KPRC 2 from KRIS Corpus Christi as new 4pm anchor

Yeah, I'm totally slipping as of late as many of you have noticed, but here is a quick post for you.

KRIS Corpus Christi weekend anchor Sara Donchey joins KPRC 2 as the station's new 4pm anchor confirms KPRC 2 news director Rhonda LaVelle to mikemcguff.com.

Donchey will anchor with Keith Garvin. That means current 4pm anchor Lauren Freeman will now anchor the 5pm with Bill Balleza.

You might remember that longtime 5pm anchor Dominique Sachse left that show upon her contract renewal.

"Freeing up the 5pm newscast allows me more family and after-school time," Sachse told mikemcguff.com last April.

Previous to her two years at KRIS, Donchey worked as a reporter for KZTV Action 10 News in the same city.

Before Texas, she was a production assistant for KPIX CBS5 in San Franciso and online managing editor for the Golden Gate Xpress.

Donchey is a graduate of San Francisco State University.

  1. So she's going to be Midday anchor with Andy Cerota and a reporter at KPRC

    1. Anon at 12:51pm, that's going to mean Jennifer Reyna will still be doing traffic reports in the weekday mornings!

  2. She's definitely a looker. That ought to help increase their ratings and viewership.

    1. Not everyone watches news for boobs, makeup and hair, especially when so many of them look like clones. Some of us actually watch to learn what is going on.

    2. Well she's definitely a looker. Disappointed Chita male fans might flock to her.

    3. Chita...more overrated than Jen Reyna, Kareem Jackson and Blue Bell ice cream here in the city of Houston.

  3. Dear KPRC, please hire Miranda Leah from KRIS too.

  4. Lauren can't do the 4 and 5? Seems like a waste to bring in someone new to just do the 4 ... but she's coming from Corpus so I'm sure they got her cheap.

    1. It's quality, not quantity. Just because she's from a low DMA doesn't mean she lacks talent and/or potential. She seems confident and organized in the snipit Mike supplied. Let's see how she does. And as far as you Chita lovers and haters- man I'm so sick of hearing about her, you're all so funny. Really. Those of you who really think she's got talent need to get a broader view of what and who's out there; past, present and future. Those of you who don't think she's got talent? Like it or not she's "sold" her way to where she is, both her looks and brains. She's not the greatest and she's not the worst. And "no" it's not a blonde thing. She's very similar to another colleague in another market, though. But it's amazing how she can be so polarizing of a subject, one way or the other. Can we finally move on? My biggest gripe are the anchors and reporters inserting their opinions and inuendos into their stories. And trust me, Houston has enough to go around, as all other markets. Now if we can have some civil discussion about my remarks, that would also be news! One more item: I'm glad to see the success JJ Watt is having outside of football in addition to his "game". If I was an NFL owner I'd be jealous. He's been nothing but a great addition as a player, leader, role model and PR machine for the game and Houston at large. If he keeps his head on straight he's going to have opportunities he could never imagine.

    2. The big question is who's on their way out of KPRC-TV ?

    3. Good question. I hope the answer includes the words "Owen, Ruben, Dom and Jen".

  6. @ Steve 9:43

Hopefully they will finally give Reyna a pink slip. She's a failure as an anchor, completely worthless as a field reporter, and from what I've seen she can't even arrive at work on time to deliver poor traffic reports.

  7. Not a native, so hence my question. Why do the Houston news stations seem reluctant to "promote from within" when it involves landing a "coveted" anchor position? Could they not have given that slot to perhaps Courtney, Sophia, or Jennifer?

  8. Again, another "newbie" question --- Why the seeming negative comments and putdowns of Ms. Renya? She seems to perform well with her traffic duties. I typically don't see much of her as an anchor nor have I seen her function as a reporter, so I can't comment on her abilities in those roles. I can't imagine that she has been at KPRC for as long as she has based upon looks alone, since you can always find someone who's "prettier". Maybe it's time for her to consider landing a full time anchor spot in a smaller market --- that is, if she has aspirations of ever landing something bigger in a market such as Houston.

    1. Have you been in the real world? Here's how it works: If you are a woman under a certain weight, have long hair which is preferably worn straight, wear a lot of makeup you will get the job over any other women, provided you kiss butt , play the game and tell EVERYONE, especially men, what they want to hear. I've been in the media and I can tell you this is how it works, especially in radio. If you have and do all these things you can bring in bad ratings and NEVER get fired. Actually, they will promote you in a lot of cases.

  9. Anyone see Ch. 13's updated studio set ?

Noticed they changed it today, showing the downtown skyline!

  10. From Ken Hoffman column

I asked Donchey if she felt extra pressure anchoring in a Top 10 market at such a young age. She doesn't have a long résumé of jobs in small and medium-size markets, working her way up the ladder to Houston.

    Like it used to be.

"I hear that a lot. I hear it everywhere I go. I am aware that this wouldn't have happened even 10 years ago. I know this wasn't how it happened for a lot of my colleagues. The industry is changing, people are starting younger, right out of school in some cases.

"As a young person, I have to work harder to show people that I am serious about my craft. I take reporting and storytelling very seriously, as seriously as anybody of any age."

  11. Um, they have always stated right out of college. Is she saying that she actually works harder than everyone else? She sure says "I" a lot. Shouldn't reporters have a way with words and know proper punctuation? You know what you should do, if you want to show you get where you are at, because of talent. Go to work with your hair pulled back, or worn naturally and take off all your makeup. Let's see how that would work.

  12. Sara did great her first newscast on KPRC! Looks like she may be better than Dominique!

  13. I am surprised after reading all the comments here, there seems to be a lot of janitors turned critic.

    1. So, if you disagree with someone, or have an opinion, you're a " janitor?" That doesn't sound like something that would come from someone who has high self-esteem and who is well-educated. Just saying!

    1. Unfortunately I think they're afraid to fire Her Royal Airheadedness because of her mega-millionaire energy mogul hubby Nick Florescu.

  15. Boy, she looks totally different than when I worked with her in SF. Did she have surgery, or is it just a lot of makeup and hair? It's amazing what that stuff can do.

  16. Big question is if she is usoing kprc as a stepping stone.

  17. I'd like to see Sara Donchey fill in for Bill Balleza when he's not there. Even Andy Cerota would be a better fill in. The guy they currently have filling in for Bill isn't as good as they are.

  18. She's been here nearly 3 months now and is not good at all. Immature and very unpolished. Sophia Ojeda is impressive, but ol' Donkey Punch ain't cutting the mustard on air.

  19. It troubles me that there are so many negative comments of Jennifer Reyna for no reason. She does great both doing the morning traffic as well as an anchor. I guess some folks out there think you can't be pretty and a professional at the same time. Keep up the great work Jen!
