Nick Bannin promoted to KXAN Austin chief meteorologist

Nick Bannin has been named the new chief meteorologist of the KXAN Austin First Warning Weather Team starting Monday, May 6, 2024.

He takes over for David Yeomans, who left for CBS Chicago. Former chief Jim Spencer has been filling in ever since.

"Nick’s performance over his three and a half years here at KXAN has been nothing less than outstanding," KXAN Vice President & General Manager Eric Lassberg said in a statement. "He is 100% KXAN’s core values especially in the humility category. We look forward to implementing some of Nick’s ideas that will grow KXAN’s weather coverage and provide an even greater value to our audience."

"Central Texas is such an incredible place to live, and my wife and I couldn’t imagine raising our two children anywhere else," Bannin added. "“As part of KXAN’s First Warning Weather team, I am dedicated to keeping viewers safe during dangerous weather and well-informed so they can plan their lives in all types of conditions."

Speaking of Mrs. Bannin, who gave birth to a baby daughter, Mila, in 2022, the couple met when Nick interviewed her for a story.

Bannin joined KXAN as a weekend evening meteorologist in 2021 from 22News WWLP Western Massachusetts.

The award-winning meteorologist launched his television news journey at WETM 18 News in Elmira, New York.

Originally from Bristol, England, he's a Cornell University graduate who toggled between the UK and the US during his childhood and remains a fervent supporter of Manchester United.

David Yeomans Day declared in Austin on February 28, 2024

As I first blogged on Monday of this week, KXAN 36 chief meteorologist David Yeomans' last day on Austin TV is today as he leaves for parts unannounced at this point.

So, to honor the longtime Austinite (even before KXAN), Mayor Kirk Watson declared February 28, 2024, as "David Yeomans Day" in the City of Austin.

"Donning his iconic pocket squares and white accent collars, David Yeomans has always jumped into action to guide Austinites through whatever unpredictable event Texas weather has thrown at us," the proclamation read. "The Mayor of Austin is arguably a chicken and refuses to make a determination as to whether David Yeomans or Jim Spencer is at the top of the leaderboard for all-time correct weather predictions."

Speaking of Jim Spencer, he is coming out of retirement for weather duty until Yeomans' replacement is named.

David Yeomans joins CBS Chicago

David Yeomans announced he is leaving his position as chief meteorologist for KXAN Austin this week. His last Austin on-air date will be Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

UPDATE: In late March, Yeomans announced he is joining CBS 2 Chicago WBBM. He will be working with a past Austin TV competitor, former KVUE chief meteorologist Albert Ramon.

Here is what Yeomans posted on Facebook when leaving Austin, Texas:

"It’s a bittersweet day as I close one chapter of my life and open another. After 12 wonderful, fulfilling years at KXAN, my last day on-air in Austin is Wednesday.
I can’t say where I’m headed quite yet, but I’ll tell you as soon as I’m able. Know that it had to be an incredible opportunity to get me to leave my hometown, and that’s exactly what it is. While I’ll miss Lake Austin, the Greenbelt and lots of other things about this city, I am really excited for a new challenge and continued growth.
I want to thank everyone at KXAN for taking a chance on a guy with zero experience straight out of graduate school. My intern tapes were rough! While I still have much to learn, I have grown so much during my time at the station and have been privileged to earn your trust during dangerous weather and to cover important climate change and water issues in our community.
The success of a TV meteorologist is entirely in the hands of viewers like you — so as I always say, thank you for watching."

Yeomans joined KXAN in June 2012 and took over the chief met job from Jim Spencer in 2021.

And guess what? Spencer will return to fill in evening weather until Yeoman's replacement can be hired.

The longtime Austinite, who attended Westlake High School, has picked up three Lone Star EMMY Awards and the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society.

After being promoted to chief, Yeomans was selected as GQ’s meteorology expert, where he took a look at movies and explained if the depicted weather events were realistic or not.

Yeomans was engaged to be married in 2021 and married wife, Izzy Wagner, on November 19, 2022.

Speaking of Spencer, Yeomans interned with the former chief meteorologist as a University of Miami student! He also interned with Spectrum News Austin and CBS4 WFOR Miami.

In addition to earning a University of Miami Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology, Yeomans also earned his Master’s Degree in Meteorology from the same school.

For his Master's thesis, Yeomans researched hurricane formation and flew on a NOAA Hurricane Hunter flight. He later presented his findings at the 2012, 2013, and 2016 American Meteorological Society conventions.

Avery Tomasco promoted to CBS Austin mornings

Avery Tomasco is the new CBS Austin News KEYE morning meteorologist, moving from weekend evenings.

Tomasco will be taking the place of meteorologist Nicole Hartford who is leaving for 11Alive WXIA Atlanta and will hit the air there in February 2022.

Here is what Tomasco posted to Twitter:

"Life update and exciting news to share with you, friends... I have accepted a promotion to become the full-time morning meteorologist for CBS Austin News beginning next week (January 24th.) To say this is a dream come true would be an understatement...
I grew up in Austin utterly fascinated by the weather. I’d fall asleep to “weather on the 8’s” as a kid, always glued to Mark Murray and Jim Spencer during every storm chance, running quickly from the TV to the back deck with my dad to observe and learn while monitoring my rinky-dink weather station I got for Christmas one year. I discovered quickly after my first internship that I wanted to be a morning meteorologist, and I wanted to do so in Austin... to finally be stepping into that role 10 years later is surreal and difficult to put into words.
I get to continue doing what I love, keeping you ahead of our wild Texas weather while (hopefully) teaching you something new along the way. I get to stay in Austin, raise my little girl in the town I grew up in surrounded by friends and family, and teach her all of the things that made me fall in love with meteorology to begin with.
A huge thank you to my news director, Rob, and our general manager, Amy, for taking a chance on me four years ago and for taking another chance on me now. And thank YOU for coming along for this incredible ride. I truly have you, your trust, and your viewership to thank. I am beyond honored, and I can’t wait to get started!"

As he mentioned his Central Texas upbringing, the Houston born and Austin raised Tomasco attended Eanes Elementary, Hill Country middle school and Westlake High School.

While in school, Tomasco visited KEYE 42 Chief Meteorologist Troy Kimmel which drove his desire to forecast weather.

Before returning to Austin at KEYE, Tomasco was the morning meteorologist for KTAB/KRBC Abilene.

The Texas A&M University Bachelor of Science (BS) Meteorology grad interned across the street at FOX 7 Austin KTBC.

Tomasco, a self-described "true weather nerd" earned his Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation from the American Meteorological Society right before joining CBS Austin.
