José Griñán has passed away

Jose Griñan, 72, has died according to his former TV station FOX 26 KRIV Houston.

He retired in 2023.

Griñan became the first anchor of FOX 26’s morning newscast when it launched in August 1993, back when the station’s studios were located at the current site of Central Market on Westheimer.

He arrived in Houston from KDFW Channel 4 in Dallas-Fort Worth (prior to its affiliation with FOX), where he worked as an anchor and reporter. According to his biography, Griñan was among the first journalists on the scene during the Branch Davidian siege near Waco.

Earlier in his career, he served as a correspondent and host for Crime Watch Tonight and worked as a freelance reporter for CNN.

Griñan also spent time in Miami at WTVJ Channel 6 and WCKT (now WSVN 7), with a stint at the Satellite News Channel in between.

A graduate of the University of South Florida, he began his broadcast career in 1975 at KTSM AM-FM-TV in El Paso as a reporter and weekend anchor.

Griñan has been a member of the National Association of Black Journalists since 1978 and is also a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
