Karen Hua is the new Houston-based national reporter for CBS News, covering the South and Middle America for CBS Mornings, CBS Evening News, and the network's 24/7 streaming platform.
Before joining CBS News, Hua spent three years as a reporter for NBC10 Philadelphia WCAU. There, she was part of the Murrow award-winning team that covered the July 4th active shooter incident. She also extensively reported on the AAPI community.
Prior to Philly, Hua was a reporter for News 12 New York, where she served as a reporter covering Westchester and New York City.
She previously worked at KGET 17 News in Bakersfield, California, where she not only reported but also created and hosted Pop Kern, a local lifestyle show she pitched and produced, which drew an average of 30,000 viewers per episode.
Hua began her career in NBCUniversal’s East Coast Page Program, working with NBC New York, CNBC, and The TODAY Show. She also honed her writing skills as a lifestyle writer for Forbes, covering luxury, entertainment, fashion, and real estate.
A proud first-generation Chinese American, Hua is fluent in Mandarin. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Honors English & Psychology, completing her degree in just three years. While at Michigan, she served as Arts Section Editor for The Michigan Daily and was active in M-agination Films.
Hua joins correspondent Janet Shamlian, who is also based in Houston, for CBS News.
