Rosie Nguyen has left her reporting position with ABC13 Houston KTRK.
Here is what she announced on Christmas Eve:
"Dear H-Town, Thursday will be my last day with ABC13.
After taking a lot of time for self-reflection and discussion with my loved ones, my heart truly believes it’s time to move on. I did not make this decision lightly and I am so grateful to KTRK for the last three years. I am no doubt a better journalist and a stronger person because of this experience.
To my colleagues — Some of you became lifelong friends that I never expected. You’ve been there to celebrate my highs and uplift me during my lows. You’ve also been great comrades to lean on, helping me learn the lay of the land and developing the skills needed to succeed in this role.
To Houston — You welcomed this Utah girl in with open arms and I want you to know how much that means to me. Jason and I didn’t anticipate becoming so immersed into the community after only a short time here. We will still be in Houston and don’t have plans to move in the immediate future. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything."
She joins Courtney Fischer and Jacob Rascon, who recently left Channel 13. Daniela Hurtado is currently on leave.
Nguyen joined KTRK in December 2021 as its Race and Culture reporter, replacing Cory McGinnis. In this role, she worked with other ABC-owned TV stations to cover underrepresented communities and contributed to the Hulu docuseries called "Our America."
Last summer, KPRC 2 Houston Senior Investigative Producer Jason Nguyen asked Rosie to marry him on stage during the Asian American Journalists Association’s 2024 convention, which was held in Austin this year.
She previously worked for ABC4 KTVX Salt Lake City, Utah, as the 7 p.m. anchor for CW30 KUCW. Before that, she worked as a multimedia journalist (MMJ) and fill-in anchor for ABC4 starting in January 2018 with the Nexstar station.
She also hosted "In Focus," a nightly ABC4 segment that tackled complex community issues such as racial equity, LGBTQ+ issues, disability rights, restorative justice, intergenerational poverty, and mental health.
An Emmy Award-winning journalist, Nguyen was recognized in the Breaking News category of the Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards for her coverage of the George Floyd protests in Salt Lake City.
Her journalism career began at KEZI 9 News Eugene, Oregon, where she worked as a weekend morning anchor/reporter.
Nguyen graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor's and master's degree. During her studies, she interned with KTVX, KSL 5 TV, KUTV 2News/KMYU, and U92 KUUU-FM, all in Salt Lake City.
Originally from Salt Lake City, Nguyen was also crowned Miss United Nations USA in 2013 while pursuing her education.
