Deborah Wrigley exits KTRK abc13

UPDATE AUGUST 2020
Deborah Wrigley to leave abc13 KTRK

Former bosses praise longtime channel 13 reporter Deborah Wrigley as she leaves the station

Longtime KTRK abc13 reporter Deborah Wrigley is no longer with the Disney/ABC Television Group station.

"We are disappointed she turned down our offer to maintain a relationship with us," KTRK VP of Creative Services David Lee told mikemcguff.com. "We wish her the very best and appreciate her years of service."

Thursday, Wrigley's bio was removed from the station's website. There has been no mention of any departure on her social media accounts.

After 37 years or so, you can call Wrigley two things, an amazing writer and survivor. Let's focus on the latter for a moment. She is the last standing reporter from when she started (this is excluding anchors). Can you imagine all of the big stories in that time she has covered?

"Every major city has that one person who is a great writer, knows the city inside and out and can turn stories that are compelling, hard hitting or will put a tear in your eye," former KTRK news director Dave Strickland told mikemcguff.com. "Deborah is that journalist and Houston is a lessor place without her on our streets reporting."

As far as reporting, Wrigley knows her storytelling. She understands how to get to the heart of a story.

TV staffers will understand this aspect about her writing. If you look at one of her scripts, it would not naturally be cut and pasted over to a web story. She knows how to write specifically for TV in a simple and clear way so it has natural flow for the TV audience. I think this is a style that has been lost over the years.

"She is one of the best news writers in the business," former KTRK assistant news director Don Kobos told mikemcguff.com. "There isn't a story in Houston that she hasn't covered and covered well. Deborah's departure negatively impacts KTRK."

And don't get me started on her institutional knowledge of Houston. Tie Wrigley's historical perspective with her love of history and you get one compelling story. I'd day almost untouchable in this aspect.

If you are talking about Wrigley, then you have to mention animals. Her love for our four-legged friends is so well known. Any KTRK producer or assignments editor knows to automatically assign Wrigley to animal stories because her passion will show through.

Where does her flair for reporting come from? It actually doesn't come from a journalism degree, but a University of Houston English degree and maybe even from Hollywood of all places.

Deborah's father, Dewey Wrigley, did visual effects and cinematography for the likes of Cecil B. Demille. He was under contract with Paramount his daughter once wrote.

Naturally, Wrigley had a following with the Houston television viewing audience. I have two personal experiences with this.

One time while working at channel 13, I was sent to interview a couple in Pasadena for a consumer segment. When we wrapped up the questions, all they wanted to talk with me about was Deborah Wrigley. She had apparently interviewed them many years before our meeting that day and they loved and followed her ever since. If I remember correctly, the couple had fled their burning apartment building all those years ago, but on that tragic day, were thrilled they got to meet Deborah Wrigley as a result.

When I was reporting for KIAH 39 years ago now, I was dispatched to a brutal convenience store robbery on the east side of the viewing area. Well, Wrigley had been there to cover the story the day before and the employees were still talking about it. After my interview, Wrigley was the topic of conversation, not the clean up after the crime. Once again, these people had just gone through a harrowing experience, but at least they were excited they got to meet Deborah Wrigley as a result.

Let me say from working in the industry and now blogging about it in my underwear, viewers are not usually this excited about meeting TV journalists these days from what I can tell.

Deborah Wrigley to leave abc13 KTRK

Deborah Wrigley is leaving abc13 KTRK in September 2020 according to social media chatter.

UPDATE
Mayor Sylvester Turner declares 9-4-2020, "Deborah Wrigley Day" in honor of the longtime abc13 KTRK reporter's last day

"Deborah is an icon of broadcasting and a true journalist Houstonians will always remember," abc13 KTRK news director Rehan Aslam said in an internal memo obtained by mikemcguff.com. "We wanted to thank Deborah for her countless stories that made such an impact on thousands and thousands of people. She served our city and our communities with grace and professionalism."

The memo says Wrigley started with the station 42 years ago.

Now, you might say this type of post about Wrigley has been on my blog before. And you would be correct.

Wrigley left channel 13 in June of 2016, but she quickly returned to the Disney-ABC owned television station just months later in September of that year.

"She is one of the best news writers in the business," former KTRK assistant news director Don Kobos told mikemcguff.com for my 2016 post about Wrigley's departure. "There isn't a story in Houston that she hasn't covered and covered well. Deborah's departure negatively impacts KTRK."

No doubt Wrigley's reporting has had a profound impact in the Houston area and beyond.

The award winning television journalist has covered big stories such as the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, Hurricane Alicia, Texas politics to everything in between.

In my opinion, Wrigley truly shines when it came to historical and feature stories. Producers know they can assign Wrigley these topics and she will write a very thoughtful and informed piece.

Now here is why you read my blog for Houston media news.

Where did Wrigley work before channel 13?

That is tough information to locate, but the answer is KUHT 8 - the Houston PBS station.

Here is a 1977 Wrigley report from channel 8 covering Equal the Rights Amendment and the International Women's Year Conference.

The South Houston High School graduate earned an English degree from the University of Houston.

As I have mentioned in the past, Wrigley's dad, Dewey Wrigley, was in the movie business. Mr. Wrigley worked for legendary filmmakers like Cecil B. Demille as a cinematographer. Clearly fantastic storytelling ability runs in the family.

Now those who know Wrigley personally will tell you she is a big animal lover.

This weekend, Wrigley posted the sad news on her Facebook page that her beloved dog Bosco has died. Here is where you can leave your condolences.

According to Aslam's memo, Wrigley's last day will be September 4th.

"Deborah will always be a member of the KTRK family," Aslam added. "And we look forward to collaborating on big projects with Deborah in the future."

"Deborah Wrigley Day" in honor of the longtime abc13 KTRK reporter's last day

Mayor Sylvester Turner declares 9-4-2020, ‘Deborah Wrigley Day’

Deborah Wrigley is leaving abc13 KTRK Friday as I blogged about in late August, but before she leaves, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has something to say about the longtime Houston journalist.

The mayor has declared Friday, September 4, 2020, "Deborah Wrigley Day" in honor of the channel 13 reporter who wraps up her time at the station after more than four decades.

Here is what Mayor Turner said to Wrigley in a recent press conference (you can watch in embed below):

I did want to take this opportunity to just thank you and acknowledge you for your reporting, your service, your commitment. Not just to the station, KTRK channel 13, but for the city of Houston.

After 42 years of reporting and retiring at 42 years of service. That's a big deal.

And 42 years, I will tell you, we've known each other for a long time, [Deborah says, "In the legislature and the mayor's race."] and we were going back to kind of look at some of the interviews and things. There was sometimes the interviewing and the questions were tough on me...but through it all, you've always been very, very fair and professional.

So I did not want you to leave this press conference today without expressing our thanks and congratulations to you for 42 years of service. And we just hope and pray that the best days of Deborah Wrigley in the future will be far, far better than the days that have passed. So I wish you all the very best. Congratulations.

- Bob Slovak leaves abc13 KTRK

“Deborah is one of the finest writers and storytellers I have ever met," Wendy Granato, KTRK president and general manager said in a statement. "There will never be another reporter quite like her. She leaves a lasting legacy at ABC13, and we are grateful for her years of service to this station and our communities."

On the morning of her departure, a car parade was held for Wrigley's friends, colleagues and former co-workers to say goodbye.

After starting with KTRK in 1978, Wrigley is Houston’s longest-tenured female television reporter. After everything Wrigley has witnessed and with her excellent story-telling abilities, I wonder if there will ever be a book about her amazing ride along the Bayou City's history?

“I stayed in Houston by choice," Wrigley said in a statement. "My family roots were here for generations. That connection with a place and people reflected in my reporting."

Deborah Wrigley in accident on way home from KTRK abc13

After covering HFD, KTRK abc13 reporter Deborah Wrigley needed its help

Deborah Wrigley
Deborah Wrigley
Tuesday, KTRK abc13 reporter Deborah Wrigley had just wrapped up her day covering the Houston Fire Department contract vote, and then suddenly needed the department's services.

As she posted on Facebook (embedded above), Wrigley was hit by a car on her way home. She described it as, "being in a blender of car parts."

She appears to be OK now based on the fact that she took to Facebook to recount the event.

Her words of advice, "drive defensively!"

Deborah Wrigley returns to KTRK abc13

UPDATE AUGUST 2020
Deborah Wrigley to leave abc13 KTRK

After exiting in June, longtime KTRK abc13 reporter Deborah Wrigley returns to KTRK abc13

Call me a little stunned right now, but after leaving in June, longtime KTRK abc13 reporter Deborah Wrigley is back at the station.

Wrigley's bio has reappeared on the station's website after being removed at the beginning of the summer.

Her departure was shocking to viewers. That post about her leaving is in my top 6 of all time in terms of page views.

After 37 years or so on the air, it was hard to imagine channel 13 without Wrigley. Well, it appears you will have to imagine no more. Wrigley is back at channel 13.

I contacted KTRK for comment but have not heard back. If/when I do, the station's response will be posted here.

Deborah Wrigley back live for the first time! #abc13 #ktrk

Taniya Wright
Taniya Wright

What a weird year...right?  Who knows how much COVID-19 has affected Houston and Texas TV in 2020?

Here are the top 2020 mikemcguff.com blog posts by pageviews. That means the readers decided the stories and order of this list by their clicks.

1. Taniya Wright leaves KPRC 2
In April 2020, we learned KPRC 2 morning anchor Taniya Wright was no longer working for the station.  Days later, it was announced that former KHOU 11 #HTownRush anchor Lisa Hernandez was hired for the channel 2 mornings

2. Jennifer Reyna update 2020
Former KPRC 2 morning traffic anchor Jennifer Reyna has not been on air since October 2019, but people kept clicking on posts about her in 2020.  In March, KVUE 24 Austin morning traffic anchor Anavid Reyes announced she was joining KPRC 2 in same role.

3. J.J. Watt calls out abc13 KTRK over tweet
In January 2020, before we were fighting a pandemic, national headlines were being generated concerning how abc13 KTRK referred to J.J. Watt’s fiancee Kealia Ohai. The station issued an apology.

4. Leslie Mouton leaves KSAT 12
In June, longtime KSAT 12 morning anchor Leslie Mouton left the San Antonio television station after two decades to the surprise of her loyal viewers. Weekend morning anchor Stephanie Serna moved up to mornings in August.

5. Madd Hatta Show on 97.9 The Box?
In January, after nearly 20 years on 97.9 The Box KBXX, "The Madd Hatta Morning Show" was replaced by "Good Morning H-Town" with Jerrel ‘Hardbody Kiotti’ Brown and Keisha Nicole. Since then, Hardbody Kiotti has left 97.9 and Madd Hatta joined KTSU The Vibe.

6. Deborah Wrigley to leave abc13 KTRK
In 2016, Deborah Wrigley leaving abc13 KTRK was my second most clicked post.  Then she returned to the ABC station a few months later.  However in 2020, her departure seems permanent so far. Mayor Sylvester Turner even declared 9-4-2020, "Deborah Wrigley Day," in honor of the longtime abc13 KTRK reporter's last day.

7. Collin Myers exits abc13 KTRK
This was the post where KTRK abc13 weekend morning meteorologist Collin Myers was removed from the bios section on the station's website.

8. Where is Collin Myers?
Viewers are hip to what is happening at Houston TV stations.  While Myers was officially gone in September, his viewers were wondering about his whereabouts in early August and asking me for information.

9. Breanna Barrs leaves FOX 29 KABB
In July, Fox News 29 San Antonio KABB morning anchor Breanna Barrs had her last day on air. Since then, she had a long European vacation.  In September, the station announced ABC10 KXTV Sacramento, California weekend morning anchor Mayde Gomez was hired for Fox News First mornings

10. Big changes at KRIS 6 Corpus Christi
In early July, we learned that the E.W. Scripps Company was making changes to the KRIS 6 Corpus Christi morning show. In the fall, former KRIS morning anchor Mike Gillaspia has recently been filling-in at KIII across the street.

KTRK abc13 reporter claims assault by Dan Patrick supporters

KTRK abc13 reporter Deborah Wrigley supposedly protects fellow reporter Foti Kallergis at Lt. Governor elect Dan Patrick's watch party

As Texans come down from Tuesday night's political buzz, we learn from some Houston TV reporters covering the election, there was some kind of an incident at Lt. Governor elect Dan Patrick's watch party involving the media.

Foti Kallergis
Foti Kallergis
Last night, KTRK abc13 reporter Foti Kallergis tweeted: "Nice! Just got assaulted by someone live on air."

According to Fox 26 KRIV reporter Isiah "Factor" Carey AKA The Insite, who snapped a photo on his phone, Kallergis was allegedly shoved while on air at Lt. Governor Elect Dan Patrick's Houston watch party. Apparently, the male and female Patrick supporters accused of trying to stop Kallergis from broadcasting, were angry the reporter went live on channel 13 during a prayer.

Houston Chronicle photographer Smiley Pool also got a shot of the incident you can see here.

Luckily for Kallergis, KTRK reporter Deborah Wrigley was there to protect him from the man according to Carey. Wrigley told Carey that a woman called her a "f------ b----."

Since the event apparently happened live on KTRK, if anyone has a clip, send it to me.

UPDATE 11/10/2014
Mediaite has picked up the story and has the KTRK footage.

I have asked Patrick Chief of Staff Logan Spence and KTRK for comment. If/when I hear back, I will post the responses here.

Collin Myers: Where was his abc13 goodbye?

Collin Myers

We have seen three popular abc13 KTRK personalities leave this month, two received on-air goodbyes, but one did not.

Earlier in September, longtime reporter Deborah Wrigley got a big send off to retirement including  "Deborah Wrigley Day," a channel 13 car parade and a news story.

This week, departing weekend sports anchor Bob Slovak had multiple times to say goodbye to viewers on air, plus a news story.

Today, former weekend morning meteorologist Collin Myers took to his Facebook page and his 91,000 followers to deliver his dismay that he was not given an opportunity by KTRK to say goodbye to them on television.

Here is what he posted for those of you not on social media:

"I wanted to wait until after all recent events to share more of my personal thoughts with you. After three years, my time at KTRK-TV has come to an end. Although I had hoped for the opportunity to say goodbye to you on-air, it was not in the cards. I was surprised by the station’s decision making and surprised by no “goodbye” from anyone, but respect it in all class, and trust in God.

It is through a lens of pride that I view my last three years here at 13. From covering catastrophic storms like Tropical Storm Imelda, to competing on Millionaire in Las Vegas, while representing Houston. it’s hard to believe it all happened in just three years!

I’ve made some lifelong friends here and I had to post this to finally give them credit. My people, from Chauncy Glover, Mayra Moreno, and Erica Simon, to David Tillman and our Tornado chasing days. Erik and Ilona, you’ve always been a joy to see for the 4pm show. Art and Mel, I’ve enjoyed our laughs together, mostly on the air at 11am! And who doesn’t laugh at jokes from Tom and Samica? I’ve appreciated every early morning with you and Katherine. And yes, I still keep up with Tim Heller. Tim, I appreciate the faith you had in me from the start. I’ll text you soon. 😉

I’m thankful for some of my closest producers and directors. Jeff, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen you take a day off, ever. Robert, our serious talks were always welcomed. Mike, I’m still jealous of your Jeep. And Felix, no matter what, I’ll still always be bitter about my Chiefs’ loss to your Pats in the ‘18 AFC Championship.

I’m also proud to have been a major part of our weather team in America’s fourth largest city. David, Elita, Travis, and Rachel, stay in touch. (Just don’t forget to update the web text post when you read this! 😅)

Here’s the harder part. I’m most thankful for you. Thank you for waking up so early with me in the mornings. When offered a shift change, I still don’t know why I didn’t take evenings. Haha!

I’m ready for change (and vacation). I couldn’t be more excited. I’m excited to once again have the freedom to embrace my future. You CAN continue to follow me on all social media, as I am keeping them for my next adventure.

•Joshua 1:9 { “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” }

‭‭Collin"

I've certainly received an angry earful from the Myers faithful about his sudden departure. Then again, it seems some channel 13 viewers aren't happy about Bob Slovak being off air either.

Phil Archer, Deborah Wrigley and Tom Koch retirement party

As we were all cheering on the Astros Thursday night, the Houston TV world was celebrating the retirements of Phil Archer (KPRC 2), Deborah Wrigley (abc13 KTRK) and Tom Koch (abc13 KTRK).

The star studded Houston TV event, hosted by Bob Martin (aka "The Accountant to the Stars"), took place in a packed party room at Carrabba's - The Original On Kirby.

And we can't forget abc13 KTRK investigative reporter Ted Oberg, also in attendance, who is leaving H-Town for Washington, D.C. TV!

TV names from channels 2, 11, 13 and 26 were all there to celebrate now since it would have been difficult to gather when the trio all actually left in the past years.

Also in attendance were Houston mega attorney Rusty Hardin, former Harris County Judge Robert Eckels and former Harris County District Attorney Pat Lykos.

No one was safe from the prying eye of the mikemcguff.com camera!

Houston Media Roundtable December 2025

Shara Fryer and Wayne Dolcefino

The legendary Houston Media Roundtable returned in December 2025 after a few years' absence.

Phil Archer, Wayne Dolcefino, Robert Eckels, and Bob Martin organized the Christmas luncheon at Molina’s on Bellaire on December 16, 2025.

As the official media blogger for Houston, I was honored to snap a few photos.  Special thanks to Ceci Twachtman for letting me use her phone photos when I had to step out for a bit.

It was a reunion of KPRC 2, KHOU 11, ABC13 KTRK, FOX 26 KRIV, and WB39 KHWB staffers, as well as 740 KTRH staffers (some of whom had worked at several of the above stations).

In attendance in no particular order were Deborah Wrigley, Mary Benton, Ford Atkinson, Bill Sadler, Bill King, Margaret O'Brien-Nelson, Shara Fryer, Fran Fawcett, Annise Parker, Patti Knudson Joiner, Bob Borocoff, Mike McGuff, Amy Davis, Pat Lykos, Ceci Twachtman, Janice Evans-Davis, Dan Cogdell, Tom Koch, Andy Williams, Chris Tritico, Joe Nolan, Doug Miller, and Diana Sanders.

In light of Dave Ward's death, the previously scheduled lunch became an event honoring the legendary Houston anchor.

The last time the Roundtable reconvened was for the retirement party for Phil Archer, Deborah Wrigley, and Tom Koch in 2022.

PICS: Don Nelson's retirement party

KTRK abc13 staff members past and present says goodbye to Don Nelson

Don Nelson has left KTRK abc13 but hadn't had an official retirement bash until Saturday night. It all went down just east of the station at the newly renovated The Marquis II.

Some of the folks I saw include Tom Koch, Melanie Lawson, Casey Curry, Wayne Dolcefino, Bob Martin "The Accountant to the Stars," Miya Shay, Deborah Wrigley, Katie McCall and many more.

From the past to the present, channel 13 employees from over the years showed up to support Nelson. In fact, I got so busy talking, I missed the opportunity to actually photograph Nelson! Well whoever said I was good at the party scene?

Collin Myers exits abc13 KTRK

KTRK abc13 weekend morning meteorologist Collin Myers has been removed from the bios section on the Walt Disney Television owned station.

He posted this goodbye message on his Facebook page too:

Some personal news to share:
I have ended my employment at KTRK-TV (ABC13 Houston).

I thank all of you viewers who’ve supported me over the past three years, and thank everyone at the station for the opportunity to work in a great city.

You can continue to follow me on this page and ALL social media (*@collinmyerswx on all accounts*) and I look forward to announcing my plans soon. As for my fiancée and family, we love Texas and plan to stay.

Joshua 1:9: “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
My father used to take me out to the porch and we’d watch thunderstorms move in, in the evenings. I’ll never lose that passion or enthusiasm.

ALSO JUST HAPPENING AT ABC13 KTRK HOUSTON
- Bob Slovak leaves abc13 KTRK
- Deborah Wrigley to leave abc13 KTRK

As I posted on August 15th, Myers's loyal fans noticed he had not been on air in a while and had changed his social media account names to remove channel 13 branding. I would not post on this blog that he had left the station until he said something or his bio was taken off the channel 13 website. This evening, both happened.

Since then, Houston TV viewers have been worried about his absence and talking about it on my Facebook page.

Myers joined channel 13 right after Hurricane Harvey in 2017 as Casey Curry left the station.

The Kansas native previously worked for KEYE Austin from 2015 to 2017.

Before Texas, he worked for WIBW CBS 13 Topeka, Kansas as a weekday meteorologist and storm chaser (he also started his career at WIBW as a contractor a few years earlier).

While earning his BS at the University of Oklahoma, Myers interned at KOCO 5 Oklahoma City.

A fun fact, Myers was a contestant on 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' months before the long running game show was officially cancelled in 2019.
