John Lopez leaves 790 KBME The Sports Animal, joins 610 KILT mornings

Former Houston Chronicle columnist John Lopez can now say he is the former 790 KBME The Sports Animal host. Sources tell me that Lopez left the Houston Clear Channel building this morning after turning in his resignation.

Where is he going now? SportsRadio 610 KILT does have openings you know.

UPDATES
John Lopez posts on Facebook - "Officially joining Marc Vandermeer on Sportsradio 610 to do morning drive. Really looking forward to it ... start date announcement to come."

And Michael Garfield posted on Facebook he is filling in on 790 - "Now I am excited. Co-hosting the morning show this Thursday on our Sports Animal 790 AM. Get prepped for Cowboys and Longhorn talk! 6a-8a"

SportsRadio 610 KILT swaps schedules in May 2016

Newcomer Dante Hall joins John Lopez and Cody Stoots as co-host of “In The Loop”

SportsRadio 610 and CBS RADIO Houston announced today a new show lineup, including the newest addition, Dante Hall, starting on May 31st, 2016. Sports Radio 610 can be heard on-air, online at www.sportsradio610.com or via the Radio.com app for mobile devices.

“Mad Radio,” featuring 10-year NFL veteran, and former Houston Texans defensive tackle, Seth Payne and top rated Houston host, Mike Meltser, will now be on during the morning drive, 6:00-10:00AM daily. The essence of the show will remain the same; a high energy, fast paced, funny show, full of emotion that fans love.

Moving to mid-days will be “In The Loop,” which will highlight local sports with three voices, talking all things Houston from 10:00AM-2:00PM. “In the Loop” will now be hosted by John Lopez, eight year SportsRadio 610 veteran who has been covering Houston sports for more than 25 years. Joining Lopez will be newcomer Dante Hall, nine-year NFL veteran, Texas A&M alumni, and local Houstonian, as well as the up and coming native Houstonian, and Texas Tech alumni, Cody Stoots.

Five-time smack down champion Sean Pendergast, 20 year radio veteran Rich Lord, and three-time football champion Ted Johnson, will be back as the afternoon hosts with “The Triple Threat,” and can be heard 2:00-6:00PM daily. From 6:00-7:00PM, “Texans All Access,” the daily Texans Radio show, will give Houston Texans fans a nightly inside look on Houston’s #1 team featuring host Marc Vandermeer.

Capping off the night will be “Gallant at Night” featuring host Paul Gallant as he talks all things sports, while interacting with listeners from 7:00-11:00PM.

“When the search began, I wanted to find the right fit for the station and our passionate listeners. After an extensive search, I’m thrilled to bring Dante Hall back to Houston where his football career began,” said Ryan McCredden, SportsRadio 610 Program Director. “This dynamic lineup of personalities will deliver compelling content to the Houston sports fan every day. This just further solidifies ourselves as Houston’s Sports Leader!”

"The NFL is a year-round passion for our fans and this new lineup will provide Texans fans with a daily offseason opportunity to stay connected to their team via Texans Radio," said Houston Texans President, Jamey Rootes. "We are proud to deepen our partnership with Houston's Sports Leader and the only radio home the Houston Texans have ever known, SportsRadio 610."

Here is a complete look at SportsRadio 610 programming:

6:00-10:00AM – MAD RADIO
10:00AM-2:00PM – IN THE LOOP
2:00-6:00PM – TRIPLE THREAT

SportsRadio 610 KILT changes do some good for station

The Houston Chronicle's David Barron reports that the addition of John Lopez to SportsRadio 610 might have done some damage to the competition in the ratings:

For the first time in more than a year, KILT (610 AM) has retaken the morning drive team lead among Houston’s four sports radio stations.
Arbitron’s October ratings period for Sept. 17 through Oct. 14 includes a month’s worth of Texans talk and two weeks with John Lopez in his new morning slot alongside Marc Vandermeer. KILT’s morning drive share among men 25-54, the key advertising demo for sports radio, improved by six-tenths of a point over September while KGOW (1560 AM) dropped by a half-point. READ MORE

Darby Douglas to guest on 790 KBME The Sports Animal

Clearly former KHOU 11 traffic man Darby Douglas has a huge following in Houston still. How do I know? Just look at this old post I wrote about him and all the comments he is still receiving on it.

Well good news for Darby Douglas fans. He told me he will guest host with Ted DeLuca on 790 KBME The Sports Animal's Monsters in the Morning Tuesday from 6-8am and again from 11am-3pm! Now that is some serious radio time.

Douglas is filling in the host position recently vacated by John Lopez who is now at SportsRadio 610 KILT in the mornings.

John McClain joins SportsRadio 610 KILT as Senior Texans Columnist

John McClain, the legendary retired Houston Chronicle NFL columnist, is joining SportsRadio 610 KILT as Senior Texans Columnist.

“I’ve been doing sports talk on 610 for 23 years, and I’m fired up about the opportunity to write for the station’s website,” said McClain. “I’m especially excited to work with Brandon Scott, one of my favorite reporters in Houston. I think Brandon does a terrific job covering Houston sports, and it’s an honor to cover the Texans with him.”

SportsRadio 610 says McClain will, "provide weekly postgame observations, team report cards and Texans-driven columns throughout the season." He will also continue to make appearances on “Payne and Pendergast,” “In the Loop with John Lopez and Landry Locker” and “Clint Stoerner and The Show.”

Using his vast Texan's knowledge, McClain will also co-host the Houtopia Football Podcast with Sean Pendergast.

“To officially bring a Houston legend in John McClain onto our team is incredible,” said Parker Hillis, Brand Manager, Sports Radio 610. “John has always been one of our biggest proponents in the market and I’m thrilled that Texans fans will now be able to read his observations and opinions at SportsRadio610.com, on top of his weekly radio appearances.”

He's served as a Sports Radio 610 contributor since 1999.

SportsRadio 610 becomes 95.7 The Fan Houston

95.7 The Fan Houston

SportsRadio 610 KILT-AM Houston announced it will rebrand as 95.7 The Fan beginning Thursday, August 13, 2026, bringing its sports programming to the FM dial in place of 95.7 The Spot KKHH.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2026
Houston radio gets X106.1 as Tejano Moves to 99.5

That's after more than three decades on the AM dial. No word on what happens to the 610 KILT-AM.  Back to Top 40?  OK, that's a Gordon McLendon era joke. UPDATE: Radio Insight reports both 610 and 95.7 will change to KIKK-AM and KIKK-FM (a nod to the 95.7 frequency's country music roots) and will simulcast the same programming.

Owner Audacy has been moving its portfolio of AM sports talkers to the FM dials across the country for years.  So when SportsRadio 610 teased a big announcement, this is what radio insiders were thinking would be announced in Houston.

However, I never would have thought they would flip 95.7 The Spot, since it is usually the company's highest-rated Houston station (I don't know about revenues, though). The Spot debuted in December 2016 as Houston's newest adult hits radio station programmed for listeners who love a variety of hits from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s.  Legendary Rock 101 KLOL Outlaw Radio DJ Greg "Grego" Onofrio has been the voice and brand ambassador of The Spot since 2019.

"It was fun while it lasted," Grego posted Wednesday evening after the announcement.  "My thanks and love to all. I’ll be in touch."

UPDATE:  Here is the Audacy press release:

HOUSTON, TX – July 22, 2026 – Audacy announces the launch of 95.7 The Fan in Houston, officially establishing the company's FM sports radio presence across all top ten U.S. markets. Beginning August 13, 95.7 The Fan will launch as an FM simulcast of 610 AM, delivering the market’s leading sports talk, expert analysis, and live play-by-play coverage across both frequencies.

As part of this expansion, 95.7 The Fan will serve as the flagship FM broadcast home for the Houston Texans, bringing the game-day action and year-round coverage to an even broader audience across the region.

“Houston boasts some of the most passionate sports fans in the country, and they deserve both the content and distribution that matches their energy,” said Chris Oliviero, Chief Business Officer, Audacy. “Between our incredibly entertaining and informative lineup of local hosts and our exclusive partnership with the Texans, we are the ultimate destination for Houston sports fans. Launching 95.7 The Fan as our tenth FM sports station in the top ten U.S. markets is a proud milestone and solidifies Audacy's leadership in local sports audio. We can't wait to bring this unbeatable coverage to even more fans so they can join the conversation and stay connected to the teams they love.”

95.7 The Fan will launch with the following on-air lineup.

6:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. CT: “Payne and Pendergast”

10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. CT: “In The Loop with John Lopez and Reggie Adetula”

2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. CT: “The Drive with Stoerner and Hughley”

Nightly after Texans All Access: “Area 45 with Bijani and Creighton”

95.7 The Fan is Audacy's industry-leading 23rd FM sports station. As the #1 destination for live sports talk and sports streaming, Audacy delivers a robust portfolio that includes over 40 owned-and-operated sports stations, 160 digital sports channels, and a premier sports podcast network featuring over 600 titles. Audacy is also the flagship home of more than 75 professional and collegiate teams, including the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys and Golden State Warriors, and is the official audio streaming partner of Major League Baseball.

Here is the official announcement:

"For 32 years, Sports Radio 610 has been the soundtrack of Houston Sports.

We were there when the Oilers said goodbye.  And when the Texans said hello.

We lived every heartbreaking moment, every impossible comeback, every championship celebration from the agony of a game seven loss.

To two World Series parades.

For three decades, one thing has never changed. We've been right here with Houston sports fans every day, every game, every season.

And now, after 32 incredible years, it's time for a fresh look, an upgrade, a new era, a new era.

Thursday, August 13th Sports Radio 610 moves to the FM dial. The voices you trust. The sports talk you love. Louder, clearer, better than ever. As 95.7 The fan, Houston sports leader with 100,000 watts of power behind us.

957 The Fan coming to you, Houston on August 13th."

SportsRadio 610 KILT hosts say "the best is yet to come"

After sudden dismissals of afternoon and morning talent, remaining SportsRadio 610 KILT hosts promise good things are coming

On Friday's episode of In the Loop with John Lopez and Landry Locker, the SportsRadio 610 KILT hosts told their listeners known as "The Loopholes" how "the best is yet to come" and how the station has a "bright future" going forward.

The duo talk about how great Sean Pendergast will be when paired in the mornings with Seth Payne. They are also excited about the afternoon premiere of Clint Stoerner (former SportsRadio 610 weekly contributor and fill-in host) and Rick Kamla (92.9 The Game WZGC-FM Atlanta - studio host and play-by-play announcer for NBA TV) plus nights with “The Six Pack with Matthew Jarecki.”

Thursday, longtime afternoon host Rich Lord and morning host Mike Meltser were let go from the station. Locker says Meltser will take the bar exam in a few weeks as his twitter bio says he is a law student at UH.

New SportsRadio 610 weekday lineup is as follows.

6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.:
“Payne and Pendergast”

10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.:

SportsRadio 610 'Outdoors Show' off-air

The SportsRadio 610 KILT-AM 'Outdoors Show' has been cancelled, according to host Captain Mickey Eastman Sr.

UPDATE:  Listeners tell me in 'Outdoors Show' and Captain Mickey's place is the 'Bite Me - A Texas Saltwater Fishing Podcast,' hosted by Sports610 'In The Loop' host John Lopez, with Capts. Scott Null, Dean Thomas, and Caleb McCumber (watch below).

Here is what Captain Mickey posted:

"Hello all you Sickos. Hope everyone is well. I have some unfortunate news to share.  Audacy has taken the Outdoors Show off the air.  I'm sorry to say I will not be broadcasting on SR 610 anymore.  After a Monday morning meeting with my bosses, they informed me that due to budgetary reasons that corporate was taking the Outdoor show off the air.  I know this is quite a shock to all of you, mostly me.  This is truly all I have been told.  I am currently working on something that may be just as informative and interesting.  I don't have any details yet but please keep your page open for a new program and updates.  I don't have many details yet, but I will keep you updated as much as I can.

I want you all to know I have enjoyed every minute of the 18 years of shows and sharing all our stories together.  But let me say, this will not be the end of us.  Yes, you all have been as much a part of this as anyone and I appreciate all you loyal listeners.

Until then, good luck and good fishing!

Best regards to all,

Captain Mickey Eastman Sr."

The Outdoors Show aired Thursday through Friday from 4am to 6am and Saturday and Sunday from 4am to 7am. Shows featured everything from live fishing reports with fellow professional anglers and guides to hunting tips.

Captain Mickey started his guiding career in the fall of 1980 on Galveston Bay.

Jackson and Wexler jump ship from 610 KILT to 790 KBME

UPDATE
610 KILT's Matt Jackson and Adam Wexler are new 790 KBME morning show - CONFIRMED

Here I thought I could be lazy for a few days during the holiday, but Houston radio sports guys are changing sides so I am back:

Talk show hosts Matt Jackson and Adam Wexler have left CBS Radio's KILT (610 AM), apparently to become morning show co-hosts at Clear Channel Radio's KBME (790 AM). READ MORE

I contacted Clear Channel AM operations director Michael Berry about this Wednesday and he said he'll talk about it on Monday. David Barron says more changes are coming.

You will remember that John Lopez just left 790 KBME for 610 KILT so they are even.
