Ron Corning returns on KERA's “NTX Now"

Ron Corning and Miranda Suarez

After several years away from the local spotlight, Ron Corning is returning to North Texas broadcasting...this time on the radio.

Corning has been named co-host of NTX Now, a new live, weekday morning talk show launching this summer on KERA News 90.1 FM Dallas-Fort Worth and KERA’s digital platforms.

The move marks Corning’s first regular on-air role in DFW since leaving television in 2022. Most recently, he co-anchored The Morning After on CW33 KDAF alongside Jenny Anchondo. Before that, Corning spent eight years as a morning anchor at WFAA. Corning began his career in local television news, leading him to ABC News in New York, where he anchored “World News Now” and reported for “Good Morning America.”

“NTX Now” represents a new chapter for Corning and a return to daily conversations with North Texans. The show will focus on the people, issues, and ideas shaping a fast-changing region, covering everything from politics and civic life to education, arts, innovation, health, and culture.

“It’s a bit of a dust storm right now as people seek sources they trust,” says Corning. “KERA has always been so solidly grounded in this community and has never lost sight of the importance of fact-based journalism and compelling storytelling around the events and people that shape our region. KERA is meeting the moment with this new show, and I’m so grateful to be a part of it.”

Corning will co-host alongside Miranda Suarez, an award-winning KERA reporter known for her in-depth coverage of Tarrant County government. Together, the pair will guide live discussions designed to inform, reflect, and connect listeners across North Texas.

Suarez is an award-winning reporter who started at KERA News in 2020. Her public radio career began when she served as a newscast intern at WBUR in Boston, followed by a full-time reporting fellowship at Wisconsin Public Radio. Before joining “NTX Now” as co-host, Suarez covered Tarrant County government for KERA News. Her reporting drove discussion at local government meetings and led to the closure of a West Texas private prison that violated the state’s safety standards. Suarez plans to bring that commitment to meaningful journalism to the talk show format.

“I see ‘NTX Now’ as a gathering place for our audience where we can just sit together and figure out what’s going on locally,” says Suarez. “I’m excited to spend an hour with our listeners every morning.”

“This has been an opportunity that KERA has been measuring and anticipating for some time,” says Executive Producer, Stephen Becker. “With these two charismatic personalities — who are deeply embedded in North Texas culture and are beloved, respected journalists — we aim to earn the ear and trust of North Texas listeners.”

“‘NTX Now’ will be an excellent complement to our existing program lineup,” says Nico Leone, President & CEO of KERA. “Paired with NPR’s coverage of national and international news, statewide reporting from The Texas Newsroom, and ‘Think’s’ ability to spark curiosity — ‘NTX Now’ will provide a compelling, deeply regional context for KERA’s listening audience and will explore solutions to the issues shaping the future of our communities.”

The program will air weekday mornings on KERA News 90.1 FM and will be supported by a podcast, video, social media content, and live community events — extending Corning’s familiar presence into new platforms while keeping his connection to North Texas audiences front and center.

Inside DFW with Jenny Anchondo debuts on CW33 KDAF Dallas

"Inside DFW with Jenny Anchondo!" debuted on CW33 KDAF in Dallas - Forth Worth May 2, 2022.

In late March, I posted "Changes coming to CW33 KDAF DFW's Morning After?"

Well, the answer is certainly yes.

Gone from the old CW33 KDAF DFW's "Morning After" days seems to be co-host Ron Corning (former WFAA 8, ABC News) who does not appear with Anchondo in the re-branded Inside DFW show.

KDAF promises the new show will provide "a DFW-centric experience" each day from 9-10am.

As I posted before, one new addition is lifestyle reporter Landon Wexler who came from CBS 42 WIAT Birmingham, Alabama.

Changes coming to CW33 KDAF DFW's Morning After?

Jenny Anchondo and Ron Corning

Looks like changes are coming to CW33 KDAF DFW's "Morning After" show with with Ron Corning and Jenny Anchondo.

UPDATE MAY 2, 2022
Inside DFW with Jenny Anchondo debuts on CW33 KDAF Dallas

I received a viewer email saying the show has been in repeats as of late.

UPDATE: A source in Dallas told me that the show still has not been on the air lately.  Corning replied to a viewer via Twitter that the show would return with new episodes March 28th.

Also on social media, we learn Anchondo has been pre-taping various segments, including an interview with actor Mark Wahlberg about his upcoming movie "Father Stu."

On her Wahlberg Instagram tease, Anchondo posted "PS Working on something fun & NEW for @cw33dfw."

In fact, Anchondo even asked this week what viewers would like to see on TV.

In the meantime, CBS 42 WIAT Birmingham, Alabama digital reporter Landon Wexler is joining CW33 as a lifestyle reporter.

I noticed Wexler did not mention the name "Morning After" and so I am guessing there will be a new name and format possibly coming for the lifestyle show.

Stay tuned.

CBS Stations Group of Texas to pay Tammy Dombeck $215,000

UPDATE FEBRUARY 25, 2021

Ron Corning of CW33 KDAF's Morning After interviews Tammy Dombeck about her CBS federal age discrimination lawsuit concerning her time at CBS 11 DFW KTVT.

Part 1

Part 2

===ORIGINAL POST===

Former CBS11 KTVT Dallas - Fort Worth Metroplex freelance traffic reporter Tammy Dombeck Campbell will be paid $215,000 and furnished "significant equitable relief" to settle a federal age discrimination lawsuit, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has announced.

Here is more from the EEOC press release:

The EEOC charged that CBS violated federal law when it refused to hire Tammy Dombeck Campbell for a full-time traffic reporter position at the Dallas/Fort Worth station because of her age. The EEOC said that Campbell had worked for CBS 11 as a freelance, non-staff traffic reporter.

When the station’s morning full-time traffic reporter resigned in October 2014, the company initiated a search for a replacement. The CBS job announcement stated that “the ideal candidate” would have a strong knowledge of local traffic in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and that the “applicant must have at least five years professional broadcasting experience.” The EEOC said that CBS 11 hired a 24-year-old applicant for the full-time traffic reporter position. The younger applicant was a former NFL cheerleader, and the EEOC maintained that the she did not meet the hiring criteria CBS had advertised. CBS 11 also had made an offer to a 27-year old applicant who accepted and then withdrew from the hiring process.

Such alleged conduct violates the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), which prohibits discrimination against people age 40 or older. The EEOC filed suit (EEOC v. CBS Stations Group of Texas; Television Station KTXA and KTVT-TV, Civil Action No. 3:17-cv-02624) in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, after first attempting to reach a voluntary pre-litigation settlement through its conciliation process.

Under the consent decree signed by U.S. District Chief Judge Barbara M. G. Lynn, resolving the suit, CBS Stations Group of Texas will pay will pay $215,000 to Ms. Campbell and commits not to engage in age discrimination. The company will also provide training on the ADEA, publish a notice of employee rights, and report to the EEOC on its compliance with the requirements of consent decree.

“Tammy Campbell was clearly qualified for the position of traffic reporter,” said Joel Clark, EEOC senior trial attorney for the Dallas District Office. “The EEOC argued to the court that CBS 11 preferred a younger, less qualified applicant, and that the employer defaulted to unfounded stereotypes about female reporters.”

EEOC Regional Attorney Robert A. Canino added, “In explaining its decision, the company relied on what was called the ‘it’ factor. The EEOC was prepared to prove that, for Ms. Campbell, ‘it’ was her age. We hope that the resolution of this case will be another step forward in moving past ageist attitudes that can limit opportunities in the field of broadcast television.”

According to her bio, Dombeck has covered DFW traffic on radio for such station as KLIF, KPLX, KZPS and KKDA. In addition to TV news traffic on KTVT, she also covered it for NBC 5 KXAS in Dallas for 12 years.

UPDATE JULY 17, 2020
KTVT released a statement on the settlement to the Fort Worth Star Telegram which said, “We are pleased this matter has been resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.”

CW39's Morning Dose adds another hour

KIAH CW39 Houston's Morning Dose adds extra hour to now air from 6am to 10am

Today, CW39 Houston KIAH announced on social media it's adding an extra hour to Morning Dose.

So instead of 6 to 9am, the show will now air from 6am to 10am.

That puts Morning Dose at more hours than most of the other station's AM newscast offerings, but it still has a couple of hours to match FOX 26 KRIV's 4am to 10am.

When Morning Dose re-launched as a Houston only newscast, the station chose to only go head to head with the other stations starting at 6am, and then only competing with FOX 26 after 7am as the other channels go to network programming.

Judge Jerry, which was airing at 9am, has moved to the noon slot. Now what was on at noon before, I have no idea. My skills only go so far. UPDATE: The noon slot was previously occupied by Couples Court.

CW33 KDAF DFW launching Morning After with Ron Corning and Jenny Anchondo

Earlier in May I asked if CW33 KDAF Dallas getting TV morning news again? The answer is yes, but not a traditional morning newscast.

KDAF announced that it's launching Morning After Monday, June 1st at 10am on air and online. First the station produced Morning Dose, now it is the Morning After...I like it.

The show, which will be hosted by Ron Corning and Jenny Anchondo, promises to be, "equal parts informative and entertaining, engaging viewers as they go in-depth on topics that are top of mind locally and nationally."

“With the addition of Morning After, CW33 clearly recognized that in the last year Ron and Jenny have cultivated an audience and a following in the video podcast space,” KDAF Vice-President & General Manager John Trevino said on the station's website. "Bringing these two popular podcasts to broadcast made perfect sense, “This was an opportunity to build on a proven formula that brings hyper-local content to DFW viewers that audiences are craving on both our broadcast and digital platforms. This will also be the only local show at 10am, produced by the only locally owned TV station in the DFW market.”

As I posted a few weeks ago, in early April, KDAF started producing a web show called “Coronavirus: The Daily” with DFW TV personalities Corning and Anchondo along with producer Melissa Plaskoff. The station notes, that the two anchors were first paired to host the Dallas Holiday Parade.

In March 2019, Corning left WFAA 8's Daybreak where he anchored mornings for eight years. Before Dallas, he anchored nationally for World News Now, ABC World News This Morning and The Daily Buzz. Since channel 8, Corning has been helming the vodcast Morning After with Ron Corning, so the name continues on with his new project.

Anchondo returns to CW33 where she previously co-hosted the syndicated version of Morning Dose. Before KDAF, Anchondo anchored the FOX 4 KDFW weekend morning newscasts, “Good Day Saturday” and “Good Day Sunday” and reported for "Good Day" throughout the week. She also worked for WXIN Indianapolis, KOLD Tucson, AZ, KNDU/KNDO Kennewick, Washington and KQQQ-AM Pullman, Washington.

After Morning Dose, Anchondo hosted the Second Shot podcast.

Is CW33 KDAF Dallas getting TV morning news again?

UPDATE MAY 29, 2020
CW33 KDAF DFW launching Morning After with Ron Corning and Jenny Anchondo

Are we watching a CW33 KDAF daily digital show morphing into an actual morning television newscast?

Could a daily digital show on CW33 KDAF Dallas really be development for a new morning television newscast? Well, a tease on social media pretty much says that, but more on that in a minute!

After NewsFix and the syndicated version of Morning Dose were cancelled before Irving-based Nexstar Media Group bought Tribune Media, CW33 KDAF in Dallas-Fort Worth stopped producing newscasts.

Morning Dose's syndicated set at KDAF in Dallas, was shipped to Houston and the show, in name only, continued on CW39 KIAH with a new team.

Now it appears KDAF is set to start morning news on its TV signal once again.

In early April, the station launched a digital program called “Coronavirus: The Daily” hosted by DFW TV personalities Ron Corning and Jenny Anchondo with producer Melissa Plaskoff.

Corning, as DFW watchers will know, left WFAA 8's Daybreak in March of 2019. He was an anchor on the show for eight years. Before that, you might have seen him nationally on World News Now and ABC World News This Morning or The Daily Buzz.

Anchondo's last TV gig was co-host of the syndicated version of Morning Dose. Before that Anchondo anchored the FOX 4 KDFW weekend morning newscasts, “Good Day Saturday” and “Good Day Sunday” and reported for "Good Day" throughout the week. Before Texas, she worked for WXIN Indianapolis, KOLD Tucson, AZ, KNDU/KNDO Kennewick, Washington and KQQQ-AM Pullman, Washington.

UPDATE MAY 29, 2020
CW33 KDAF DFW launching Morning After with Ron Corning and Jenny Anchondo

After Morning Dose, Anchondo has teamed up with her husband for the podcast, Second Shot with Heath Oakes and Jenny Anchondo.

Now there are teases on social media that this digital project is going to TV. It doesn't get anymore clearer than "Sneak Peek! New AM show coming soon to [CW33] #REHEARSAL".

Here is where I will throw in my unsolicited two cents, no matter what any TV station says, digital shows are not where the money is...not yet at least. The moneymaker, even with declining TV news viewership before the coronavirus, is the actual television signal.

In Houston at least, I look at some of the view counts the station's digital shows get on YouTube and they are minuscule compared to the actual television news broadcasts. It appears hitting a thousand views would be a cause for celebration.
