Lindsey Henry leaves FOX 26

UPDATE January 08, 2021

After almost three years, FOX 26 KRIV reporter Lindsey Henry announces her departure

Some of my readers have noticed that FOX 26 reporter Lindsey Henry has not been on air lately. Well, now Henry is giving mikemcguff.com readers the exclusive scoop about what's next for her after channel 26.

Last April, Henry got engaged to her boyfriend Curt Freeman while the two were exploring the ruins of Machu Picchu.

Henry wrote this update for my blog on what's happening in couple's world now:

The last two months I’ve received lots of messages asking where I’m at or what I’m doing and at first I wasn’t quite ready to make the announcement, but now I am.

We’ve had a very fun, but also very difficult year as several of those closest to us were diagnosed with cancer. Two of our loved ones passed away, one of which we were taking care of. We miss them both tremendously and are praying we see them again one day.

We’ve dealt with some of our own health challenges as well. Fortunately for now, we are are moving forward, supporting and loving our family, while taking time for ourselves.

Curt and I have thought very long and hard on this and we’re excited to announce we are both taking sabbaticals from our careers. Our travel adventures will begin, hopefully, right after the Astros win the World Series this year!

I’ve worked as a TV news reporter for the last 8.5 years and in the news industry since I was 18. My time started at KIII in Corpus Christi as a production assistant and took me to Joplin, Missouri, my mother’s hometown, Springfield and Jefferson City (KOAM and FOX 14), as well as Fresno, California (KSEE 24 & CBS 47).

I’ve absolutely loved it.

Working in my hometown of Houston, I was blessed with the opportunity to cover major things over the last few years. I’ll never forget when “#EdThePhotog” and I were inside Minute Maid for the watch party when the Astros won the World Series back in 2017. Streamers falling, fans screaming as we shot video from the other side of the dugout.

It was a moment of pure joy and happiness and that’s how I feel about this decision. Ready to take on our adventure, together.

Does this mean I’m out of the industry for good?

No, it doesn’t!

For now, I can promise you I have lots of things I plan on writing about and have a goal of publishing my first book in the next year.

We also have several other goals of stepping foot on every continent and seeing all the great wonders of the world.

In closing, I just want to say thank you.

Thanks to everyone who has reached out to us this year and get ready because we will be posting much of our journey on social media, with friends and family.

Best,
Lindsey Henry

"KPRC-2's Jennifer Reyna is on the small screen to deliver your morning traffic report and after a six-year absence at the gym, she's returned and is ready to head to the boxing ring with the right partner."

UPDATE: Click for info on the Jennifer Reyna dress readers were so interested in from yesterday.

Lindsey Henry
"Lindsey Henry works as general assignments reporter with KRIV-26. The Houston-native graduated from Cinco Ranch High School and Sam Houston State University, though her Emmy nomination is the highlight of her already impressive resume."

The last entry, Hasti Taghi, actually left local tv news back in 2011. However, according to the article, and her Twitter account, Taghi has just accepted a job with NBC Universal and is moving to New York. So, if you are interested in this bachelorette, you might have to jump on a plane.

Houston TV social rankings during Harvey

How did Houston TV stations and employees rank on social media during Hurricane Harvey coverage

Last week, KTRK abc13 sent us its Houston TV ratings data during the Hurricane Harvey coverage.

Now social TV ratings, rankings and analytics company, Share Rocket, gives us the data on how each station and the corresponding air staff members performed on Facebook and Twitter.

Important because according to Pew Research, now 67% of Americans use social media to get some of their news. If you lost power, social media was probably the way you got your news during the storm.

Share Rocket is, "a social media ratings and audience solution providing media companies an easy way to quantify their social media equity, benchmark against peers and turn social market intelligence into insights that drive social success."

These rankings look at the time span of August 25th to September 1st, 2017. The numbers are pulled from station usage on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using Share Rocket's "Share" measurement which is the way to look at weekly data.

First we are looking at every Houston media company in the Share Rocket database. Then I am looking at the top 5 on air staff members at each station in order of channel number.

The top five Houston Chronicle staffers are listed at the bottom. I did not include KIAH 39 because it does not have five full-time on-air employees to make up the list. KXLN does not have a complete top five list because there was an incorrect list of employees in the database, that is being corrected. No Houston radio stations are listed in the Share Rocket database.

David Nuño returns after COVID-19

David Nuño, the abc13 KTRK weekend sports anchor, took to Twitter on Christmas Day to let us know he has been in quarantine during a battle with COVID-19.

We just learned this month that legendary channel 13 anchor Melanie Lawson battled COVID-19 (click through to watch her story on Inside Edition). KTRK anchor Chauncy Glover was the first Houston anchor to publicly say they battled COVID.

Here is a partial transcript of Nuño's video to viewers:

I've been out three weeks from the station and two weeks from being on air. I had the coronavirus.

My parents got it first. Then I ended up getting it. And, I had I would say, I had it good compared to most people. I would say mine wasn't that bad.

But I tell everyone that I felt like Baby Yoda, because I would be fine, and then all of a sudden I would be so exhausted I'd have to take a nap. But I have to use my force and then I'd be done. I'd be wiped out.

Nuño was able to do a "No Layups" YouTube podcast with partner Raheel Ramzanali where no doubt Houston Rockets srar James Harden was the topic.

Well wished poured into Twitter for Nuño from the likes of fellow abc13 anchor Elissa Rivas, former FOX 26 reporter Lindsey Henry, Houston Chronicle Texans writer Stephanie Stradley and current Sports Talk 790 KBME host Adam Wexler (formerly of KPRC 2).

Nuño, a former 1560 The Game KGOW and Yahoo! Sports Radio sports talk show host, started working for KTRK in 2012.

Hottest Houston social media stars December 2017

As we look at the end of 2017 when it comes to the Houston media social media scene (say that five times fast) we see some big changes for rankings on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

This is all thanks to Share Rocket, a company that gives us data on how each Houston TV station, the Houston Chronicle and digital outlets performed on Facebook and Twitter for the month of December 2017. Share Rocket is, "a social media ratings and audience solution providing media companies an easy way to quantify their social media equity, benchmark against peers and turn social market intelligence into insights that drive social success."

The big story is the introduction of Eduardo Rodríguez (better known as Yusnaby Pérez on social) to Houston by way of Telemundo Houston KTMD.

He is a MASSIVE social media superstar. So big, I am not even sure that any one journalist will be able to keep up with him on social.

Rodríguez joined KTMD from WLTV Univision Miami.

“Our practice here at Telemundo Houston is to hire journalists based on their exceptional journalistic work and experience as well as their commitment to reporting news with utmost journalistic integrity," Jerry Vazquez, Vice President of News, Telemundo Houston told mikemcguff.com. "Since Eduardo joined our station last summer, he’s helped us report about the most impactful news to have ever affected our communities. I am very proud of all our journalists and the outstanding work they do everyday, which is resulting in Telemundo Houston being the station of choice for Houstonians.”

According to Share Rocket, when Rodríguez was an independent journalist on Cuba, he began going by Yusnaby Pérez to avoid trouble with the government. He has more than 1.25 million followers on social media, and that’s if you don’t count the 588,000+ who follow his @Yusnaby account on Twitter.

When he arrived at KTMD, Rodríguez launched @EduardoRNow on Twitter. That account already has 124,000+ followers.

Meanwhile the Yusnaby Pérez social media profile actually beats other Houston media main station and paper accounts in the share ranking.

As for the rest of Houston media, Share Rocket reports that total engagement was down in the last 30 days compared to the 30 days prior, with five of the seven stations the company tracks in the market seeing declines (four of those stations saw declines of -21% or more).

Fmr. KPRC 2 reporter resurfaces at KHOU 11

Former KPRC 2 freelance reporter Janelle Bludau shows up at KHOU 11

As they say in the business, we have a former KPRC 2 reporter "crossing the street" to another station.

Freelancer Janelle Bludau, who apparently left channel 2 a few months ago, has changed her social media profiles to say she is a KHOU 11 reporter.

Bludau came to Houston's KPRC 2 last November from KGPE/KSEE Fresno, CA. Coincidentally the same week, Lindsey Henry joined FOX 26 from KSEE24 and CBS47 KGPE Fresno.

No stranger to Texas, Bludau previously worked for KAVU Victoria and interned at KBTX Bryan/College Station. She is a Texas A&M grad.

Janelle Bludau joins KPRC 2

UPDATE JULY 03, 2017
Janelle Bludau shows up at KHOU 11

UPDATE
I understand Janelle Bludau is no longer working for KPRC. There is no bio for her on the station's website. Her Facebook page has no activity since April 2017.

Janelle Bludau joins KPRC 2 from KSEE24 and CBS47 KGPE Fresno

Whoa, whoa, whoa, stop the clock. We have two Fresno reporters from the same station starting at Houston stations within the same weeks!

Yesterday we learned Lindsey Henry joined FOX 26 from KSEE24 and CBS47 KGPE Fresno and now her colleague Janelle Bludau is joining KPRC 2 as a freelance reporter.

We've seen this kind of thing before where people from the same market, or even the same station, come on down to Houston stations at or near the same time. Many times they share the same agent or are dating/married. Not saying the latter is the case with these two reporters.

Bludau had been a reporter/mmj with the Nexstar KGPE/KSEE combo since 2014. Before that she worked at Victoria's KAVU as a weekend anchor. She interned at KBTX Bryan/College Station.

And can we give Bludau a "whoop" since she earned her B.A., Telecommunication Media Studies at Texas A&M University?

The hottest Houston social media TV News stars summer 2017

Thanks to Share Rocket, we learn who is tops in Houston television social media

I helped put two Houston TV stations on social media in the early days and even I get bored by the "who is the hottest instagrammer/facebooker/tweeter" type of posts.

But to the TV stations, social media is the future.

I've heard some TV employees grouse that at times more emphasis is put on social media than the actual TV broadcasts.

Stories are out there of high demands put upon the TV news faces to increase their posts and followers.

That is very different than my early experience in this world when TV station managers looked at me like I was some kind of social media heretic.

"Off with your tweeting and facebooking head you crazy kid!"

In the past, I've written posts about the top Houston TV follower getters in town.

Go back five years and laugh at how small the follower counts were back then. Also see Top Twitterers at each Houston TV station (2012).

These types of posts can also be labor intensive. After all, I went to J-school because numbers weren't involved.

But if I don't have to do any tabulating...here you go!

Enter Share Rocket.

The company bills itself as, "a social media ratings and audience solution providing media companies an easy way to quantify their social media equity, benchmark against peers and turn social market intelligence into insights that drive social success."

To put it basically, Share Rocket tracks social media numbers for TV companies like Disney ABC Television Group (KTRK), FOX (KRIV) and Tribune (KIAH). It also posts data to its blog.

And we get a post about H-Town TV.

Share Rocket reports the top social Houston TV stations are:

1. KTRK
2. KRIV
3. KHOU
4. KPRC
5. KXLN
6. KTMD
7. KIAH

The list follows what is happening nationally. When you have an Disney ABC Television Group (KTRK) or FOX owned station (KRIV) in a market, they usually top the list. Those companies seem to have a strong grasp on social across the country.

As for the top individual Houston TV newscasters on social:

Among individuals, Houston was led by KPRC traffic reporter Jennifer Reyna (1.05 overall Share) and anchor Dominique Sachse (0.95 overall Share). Sachse was the No. 1 individual in the market on Instagram and Reyna was No. 2. Combined, the two had more than 390,000 Engagements in Q2. KHOU’s Craft averaged about 383 Engagements per post across all platforms. Wilson was the No. 2 individual on Facebook and had more than 115,000 Engagements on the platform. KRIV’s Lindsey Henry posted 4,294 times on social media in the quarter (the most of any individual) and nearly tripled her total Engagement from the first quarter.

Not one guy in the top five?! Fellas...good luck trying to compete in this realm.

Hottest Houston social media stars April 2018

Lot's of changes in the Houston media social media world for April 2018!

First of all, we learned that a Houston anchor taking a stand against another city's TV station that dissed one of our own, gets you some social media love. And we welcome a KTRK abc13 talent in the overall top 5 list for the first time since I've been tracking this.

Share Rocket gives us data on how each Houston TV station and the corresponding air staff members performed on Facebook and Twitter for the month of April 2018.

Share Rocket is, "a social media ratings and audience solution providing media companies an easy way to quantify their social media equity, benchmark against peers and turn social market intelligence into insights that drive social success."

The numbers are pulled from station usage on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using Share Rocket's "Share" measurement.

First we are looking at every Houston media company in the Share Rocket database and top personalities. Then I am looking at the top 5 on air staff members at each station in order of channel number.

Our #domecoming2018 adventure!

I spent many summer evenings with my good friend Greg Davis at the legendary Houston Astrodome watching the Astros.

We were even once at a Houston Oilers' playoff game where we joined in on the "Houston Oilers number 1" song. I'm sure we sang the song at obnoxiously loud levels.

So it was great to be able to take my kids into this mystical building they've passed by many times but never have been able to enter for their entire lives.

The last time I was there was for sadder times in 2005 after the Katrina evacuees were forced to live there after New Orleans was under water. Upon entering more than a decade ago, it still looked like a place stuck back in time from the moment it's doors had been closed for the last time.

Monday night, "Eighth Wonder of the World" looked less like it did in it's heyday, but for the 25,000 who got a chance to enter, they were full of happiness.

In the long line wrapped about the stadium, there was a sense of excitement. Ticket holders, had an energy about them that felt like they were about to go watch their favorite band perform or see the big game of the year. While no such event was about to take place, these Dome fans were feeling emotion about just getting inside the place after all these years.

Naturally there were a ton of Astros jerseys, but also lots of Oilers colors and gear. I guess time heals the Bud Adams wounds.

Me? I was wearing my Houstorian "Come and Take It" shirt.

Domecoming organizers created a carnival like atmosphere outside with food trucks and music/songs one would have heard inside during baseball and football games all those years ago. Talk about a time warp.

You probably saw her in the media, but there was a woman dressed in her original Dome usherette dress from the 1960s. It had that space motif that looks like what people in that groovy decade thought the future would look like.

I for one am glad the Astrodome will survive. In a city bereft of iconic symbols, the Astrodome is one that stands out.

A few years ago, I had the privileged of spending an afternoon at the The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. This is a museum of broadcasting. If you want to see artifacts from your favorite TV show, this is the place to go.

What else it has, is an amazing collection of video. You sit down at a computer and watch history. I naturally typed in 'Houston." What I found was a fantastic special CBS News produced on our fair city in the 1960s. Uncle Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather, both from around here, worked on the show.

One of the segments focused on the building of the Dome and what a statement the city and county felt this structure would make to the world. Here is a city built on a swampy coastal prairie that can do anything it wants thanks to innovation and hard work.

Don't you think that ethos survives today? The Dome is still a statement and historical reminder of where we came from and where we are going as a city.

Oh, and since this blog technically covers the Houston media...let's talk about that real quick. The Houston media was out in force covering this one. I got to wave at The Factor himself, FOX 26 star Isiah Carey.

My boys and I were made famous on abc13 KTRK reporter Pooja Lodhia's Facebook Live! When Lodhia walked past our part of the line, the people in front of us got very excited and exclaimed, "There's Pooja Lodhia!"

We passed FOX 26 reporter Lindsey Henry conducting an interview.

And just to add to the excitement while waiting in line, we had TV news helicopters buzzing overhead. My kids were excited to see SkyEye 13.

All in all, we had a great day. Thank you Harris County, Judge Ed Emmett, the Astrodome Conservancy and everyone else involved.

Can't wait to see what you do with the place!

Dave Ward to have a building named after him - Crime Stoppers of Houston Gala

Houston media, society and political world show up to honor Dave Ward at Crime Stoppers of Houston Gala 2015

photo Honoree---Dave-Ward_zps6om7ttdv.jpg

Houston media icon Dave Ward, was honored at the 2015 Building the Block Crime Stoppers of Houston Gala on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at the Omni Houston Hotel. The Annual Gala, which serves as the organization's largest fundraiser, welcomed more than 560 guests and raised over $510,000 for Crime Stopper's Tip Line and crime prevention programs, which empower, educate, and engage the community in important conversations about crime, public safety and the protection of society's most vulnerable citizens.

Chairs Joella and Steve Mach, along with auction chairs Courtney Zubowski Haas and Dr. Eric Haas, led the grand effort and celebration that marked a significant achievement and announced plans for the future. The evening began with a VIP reception with keynote speaker, best-selling author and Emmy award winning journalist, Ted Koppel. VIP guests were able to mingle with Koppel and then continued in to the silent auction and big board, all in support of the Crime Stoppers' mission. The cocktail reception opened up with a warm welcome from Rania Mankarious, Crime Stoppers Executive Director and invocation by Monsignor Frank Rossi, followed by emcee Melanie Lawson of KTRK abc13 taking the stage to kick off the night's festivities and surprise performances - all of which Ward knew nothing about!

photo Dave-Ward-Laura-Ward-Ted-Koppel_zpsexlewdfb.jpg

The entire evening was weaved together perfectly with the direction and guidance of the visionary, Laura Ward.

The focus of the evening was to honor Ward for playing an instrumental role in creating the "media" reach of Crime Stoppers of Houston back in the early 1980s. It was his creativity and ingenuity that contributed to the famous (and internationally recognized) Crime Stoppers' reenactments. Thanks to his vision, Crime Stoppers of Houston has created a model that now leads the nation. Koppel was honored to be in Houston to celebrate Ward's contributions to Crime Stoppers and his incredible achievement of being the only news anchor to stay almost 50 years on one anchor chair, in one station, in one city, in one state. Surprise video tributes from two very special friends of Ward, former First Lady Barbara Bush and NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly all the way from outer space, were played during the night.

The celebration continued with messages from several 'Friends of Dave', Governor Mark White, 43rd Governor of the Great State of Texas, Edna Meyer-Nelson, Founder, President and CEO of The Richland Companies and John Eddie Williams, founding partner of Williams Kherkher.

One of the biggest highlights of the night was a surprise visit from a very special friend of Ward who insisted on flying to Houston for this special occasion - Grammy and Emmy Award-winning artist and producer Steve Tyrell who sang "You've Got a Friend in Me" live on stage for his friend.

Before the night was over, the surprises continued as a well-kept secret was finally revealed. Because of Ward's dedication to his city, career and Crime Stoppers, Mankarious announced that the first-ever Crime Stoppers of Houston headquarters will forever be named The Dave Ward Building Crime Stoppers of Houston. Ward was astonished by the big unveil and was lost for words as he stood in front of the podium. He compared the extraordinary moment to his wedding day and birth of his children.

The evening left Ward speechless, but the celebration continued on the next day, Friday, October 30, 2015 at the 3000 Block on Main Street for the Crime Stoppers of Houston Headquarters Groundbreaking Ceremony. Koppel along with the Board of Directors, elected officials, men and women in blue and others joined in for photos to commence the city's first Public Safety and Crime Prevention Block. Welcoming remarks were made by Crime Stoppers Executive Director Rania Mankarious, Capital Campaign Co-Chairs Kathryn Stasney Childers and Fenner Weller, Franco Valobra of Harris County Sheriff's Office Foundation, Dave Ward, Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson, Houston Police Department Chief Charles McClelland and Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman. State Representative Gene Wu presented a resolution honoring the work of Crime Stoppers and recognition of Dave Ward at the 2015 Gala. Closing remarks were made by Crime Stoppers Vice Chairman of the Board Hazem Ahmed.
