David Nuño and Raheel Ramzanali are taking to the abc13 KTRK YouTube channel with their "No Layups" podcast.

Recently the longtime Houston sports duo were joined by channel 13 weekend anchor and novelist Tom Abrahams!

Then the podcast went back to 2007 when "Double Rods" ruled the airwaves of 1560 The Game KGOW and interviewed their former boss Chance McClain!

I remember going on the air with both Nuño and Ramzanali at The Game in those days and the energy in that place was good and unpredictable, which is exactly what the three Houston sports radio pros talk about.

Here is a never before seen photo I took of Ramzanali and the legendary Ken Hoffman at the 1560 The Game KGOW studios in the Galleria area more than a decade ago.

Live From The QZ with Chance McClain helping Texas musicians

Chance McClain (formerly of SportsRadio 610 KILT and 1560 The Game) has been throwing a live concert series that is benefiting the Texas musicians that are playing.

It's called Live From The QZ.

Watch out for an appearance by McClain's former colleague Raheel Ramzanali as host too!

I reached out to McClain for more info and he sent back this nice email that explains it all:

As soon as the coronavirus shutdown started becoming real I, along with half the country, recognized a certain level of stir craziness was forthcoming. At my company, I primarily film people from 70-100 years old so I knew I would be shelved for a good while. So I talked with my buddy Patrick Brogdon about putting "something" together. I have friends in the music world and friends in the comedy world and my office is on my 8-acres in the middle of nowhere. And I built a stage for the hell of it years ago. And together with Patrick, we have a ton of high end equipment...cameras, mics, professional streaming gear, lights... All of these "ands" pointed towards putting together a variety show safely tucked away in the Magnolia woods.


The first show we did, I had three bands booked, two comedians, and a host. But this was Tuesday, March 24th, very early in the "shutdown." Over the course of that day, bands began dropping over sensitivity towards the virus. Then the comedians bowed out. Even the host, Raheel Ramzanali, out of an abundance of caution, decided to play it safe. Two hours before the show, I had nothing. No talent, no host. Just a stage, gear, Patrick, and my small work crew. Then I got a call from Josh Fuller, the lead singer and titular character of The Josh Fuller Band, and he said the band's not coming but I am.

Joah showed up and played for about 3 hours of covers and original music. It was glorious. It was such a needed diversion, and it was totally safe. We took our guidance from the CDC and State of Texas websites and played it by the rules. Keep in mind, everything was 100% volunteer. We had no expectation of any money. By the end of the night people had sent over $600 to my venmo. I distributed it to the guys and it was a fun, memorable night.

Since then, we have had five Live from the QZ shows. We've enhanced the little stage, and have enjoyed the talents of The Josh Fuller Band, Caleb and the Homegrown Tomatoes, and Shane Temple play the stage. Different iterations of those same talented folks have played our "side stage" to give the band a break. We set up a separate area by my fire pit. Raheel has hosted several of the shows bringing his unique talent, personality, and perspective to what we still consider a healthy diversion during stressful times.


It's very laid back. Very laid back. My dogs usually end up being a part of the show. As the restrictions ebb and flow, we have been having guests come to watch the show live, each in their little clusters around the stage, always sensitive to social distancing, but happy to have a sense of community.

Each show, people send money to venmo and the people that perform or work get some running money. These musicians don't have venues for the time being so I hope this lark is providing them an opportunity to unwind, perform, and expend some of the artistic angst that builds up. Their stresses are alleviated by Dillon Benoit, our audio engineer. They've all worked with him before and they are able to focus on their performance knowing that he will mix a great show.

We close every show with Amazing Grace as a tip of the hat to Michael Berry, who lost The RCC to the financial constraints of the coronavirus.

We plan to keep the shows going every week or two until society renormalizes. Whether it's the old normal or a new normal is immaterial. We want the shows to look better and run smoother each week. We want the artists to feel appreciated and we want the audience to realize that, despite the madness, we will be ok. And a little diversion every now and then helps.

New 1560 The Game KGOW night show with Nuño and Raheel

Last week I blogged Where is 1560 KGOW The Game's David Nuno going? after word former Jim Rome producer Travis Rodgers was taking over his and Ken Hoffman's time slot. Nuno told me he was sticking at 1560 The Game.

Now we know more about just what he will be doing.

Turns out David Nuno and Raheel Ramzanali will host a live remote show together Monday nights just in time for Monday Night Football. The above video is a comedic announcement about the new show, complete with pool cue fighting and funny sound effects!

Houston Texans players score on radio and TV

David Barron has an article ont how Houston Texans players are appearing on radio/television and could be prepping for a second career like CBS analyst Spencer Tillman and others have:

Some players take a more carefree approach. Wide receiver David Anderson, who appears on KGOW (1560 AM) and KPRC (Channel 2), is as apt to discuss reality TV as football. Last week, he and KGOW staffer Raheel Ramzanali crooned a Backstreet Boys song in tribute to injured Texans tight end Owen Daniels, who has his own weekly air time on KFNC (97.5 FM).

David Nuño, the abc13 KTRK weekend sports anchor, took to Twitter on Christmas Day to let us know he has been in quarantine during a battle with COVID-19.

We just learned this month that legendary channel 13 anchor Melanie Lawson battled COVID-19 (click through to watch her story on Inside Edition). KTRK anchor Chauncy Glover was the first Houston anchor to publicly say they battled COVID.

Here is a partial transcript of Nuño's video to viewers:

I've been out three weeks from the station and two weeks from being on air. I had the coronavirus. 

My parents got it first. Then I ended up getting it. And, I had I would say, I had it good compared to most people. I would say mine wasn't that bad. 

But I tell everyone that I felt like Baby Yoda, because I would be fine, and then all of a sudden I would be so exhausted I'd have to take a nap. But I have to use my force and then I'd be done. I'd be wiped out. 

Nuño was able to do a "No Layups" YouTube podcast with partner Raheel Ramzanali where no doubt Houston Rockets srar James Harden was the topic.

Well wished poured into Twitter for Nuño from the likes of fellow abc13 anchor Elissa Rivas, former FOX 26 reporter Lindsey Henry, Houston Chronicle Texans writer Stephanie Stradley and current Sports Talk 790 KBME host Adam Wexler (formerly of KPRC 2).

Nuño, a former 1560 The Game KGOW and Yahoo! Sports Radio sports talk show host, started working for KTRK in 2012.

Josh Innes joins ESPN 97.5 KFNC

In a series of tweets last night, Josh Innes said he is joining ESPN 97.5 KFNC next week.

Here are those tweets compiled together:

Starting Monday I’ll be bringing “The Josh Innes Show” back to radio on @espn975 in Houston. I’ll be on from 2p-4p Monday-Friday.

How long the show continues depends on the listeners and the sponsors.

Just to be clear, I am working on @espn975 until they find their permanent solution.

I heard they were airing national programming, so I offered my services. We came to an agreement and I’m back on the radio.

View this as a long term fill in.

I’m really looking forward to this opportunity with @espn975.

As Lloyd Dobbler once said, “I’m just looking for a date to be great situation”.

I have nothing to lose. Everything to gain.

His return is after last week's departure of ESPN 97.5 FM hosts Raheel Ramzanali and Barry Laminack. The station told the Houston Chronicle's David Barron that departure was due to the economic downturn associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

CultureMap, and sister property to ESPN 97.5, columnist Ken Hoffman asked Innes about lessons he has learned during his radio career:

CM: On your podcast, you often talk about "past mistakes" and how you've learned from them. What mistakes are you talking about, and what did you learn?

JI: The mistakes I reference are usually those that involve inner-office politics. I’m not a bad guy. But too often I’ve let petty BS derail my career path. I rarely started the drama with co-workers, but I always felt the need to finish it. That has been my biggest downfall. What I’ve learned in my time away is that none of that matters. Petty, small people will always be there to try to tear you down. Why make it easy for them?

This is not the first time Innes has appeared on ESPN 97.5. Last November he did some fill-in work there. It was the first time he had been Houston radio in eight months.

That was because in March of 2019, SportsTalk 790 KBME let go Iness, his wife Jilly and producer Jim Mudd.

“The Sean Salisbury Show” took over his morning slot. .

Innes had been doing mornings on KBME since June of 2017.

He was hired by 790 to return to Houston from Philadelphia's Sports Radio 94 WIP in October 2016.

He replaced Charlie Pallilo in the afternoons. Now he and Pallilo will be on the same station. Pallilo is on ESPN 97.5 at 11am in "The Press Box" show along with Joel Blank and Nick Sharara.

Before Philly, Innes was an afternoon show host with Rich Lord on SportsRadio 610 KILT.

Innes said on Facebook that the Josh Innes Show podcast will continue.

Chance McClain of 1560 The Game talks about new film "Horrible Turn"

Chance McClain is the program director of 1560 The Game KGOW but is also a man of many, many talents. You probably know him for his music releases such as Yao Ming Song and The Big Puma. Now he and collaborator Frank Bullington (KGOW too) have shot an entire musical to release on the Internet. The film is called Horrible Turn and hits the Web for your pleasure November 10, 2009. Mike McGuff: So what made a radio guy like yourself think, "It's time to shoot a full musical?"

Chance McClain: I have wanted to write and direct a movie for a long time. I got swept up in Dr. Horrible mania and decided to give it a go. I figured if I was going to shoot a movie , why not do a musical? Most of the people that worked on the film have some kind of musical background so everything came very naturally to us.

MM: What's the summary of Horrible Turn?

CM: Boy meets girl, love blossoms, bad things happen, boy turns evil.

MM: Was it all shot in Houston? Where did you shoot?

CM: The movie was shot in and around Houston. We used my house in Spring, the office at 1560 The Game, Upper Hand Hair Salon in River Oaks, Strake Jesuit High School, a residence in Memorial, and a surprise shot in Galveston.

MM: How long did the production take?

CM: The first draft of the script was completed on March 11. Most of the music was written by the end of May. We shot over the summer in 24 days. Editing and post-production has taken us up to now.

MM: Who are the stars of the film and where did you find them?

CM: All of the actors are local. Most from around the musical theater scene. Tyce Green plays Billy. Jacob Buras plays Kenny. Kristin Massa plays the Aussie Katie. Christian Haile is Johnny. Dominic DiFelice is Wade. We did a casting call in June. I think and a lot of the actors were cast from that.

MM: Any celebrity cameos in the film?

CM: A certain Spencer Tillman gets behind the newsdesk again...Sean 'The Cablinasian' Pendergast is in the movie. Raheel Ramzanali and Kevin G. Joseph wear skirts in the film.

MM: How many 1560 The Game references did you fit in?

CM: There are a ton. The mic flag in a shot is the only obvious one.

MM: Anything else you want to add?

CM: Dr. Horrible is pretty much required viewing to fully appreciate the movie. It stands on its own ok but I highly recommend folks picking up a DVD of Dr. Horrible or watching it on Hulu before peeping Horrible Turn. Remember, it is fan art. I am a fan of Joss Whedon and wanted to make a movie about Dr. Horrible. Part of the marketing they did with Dr. Horrible was inviting the fans to submit video applications for the Evil League of Evil. Unfortunately we did not have time to send one in so went the prequel route instead. I hope the music is well received, we busted our ass on it. I hope people can appreciate that the film was done by volunteers, in spare time, and on a limited budget.

What went wrong at the Houston Landing?

The Houston Landing is shutting down today, and you are probably saying to yourself, 'What is the Houston Landing?'

That was a question I received frequently from my readers (who are clearly interested in Houston news, journalism, and media if they are reading my blog) when covering the non-profit digital news outlet in Houston. 

If they didn't even know what the Houston Landing was...that was not a good sign.

I was concerned about the Houston Landing's existence when, in six months after its launch, the reported $20 million funded site, which featured Pulitzer Prize-winning reporters, according to Texas Monthly, was generating the same amount of web traffic as the blog you are reading now.  And you know I am an unprofessional, unfunded dunderpate with a free blogger account doing this as a hobby. 

The Houston Landing reporters did great work. What surprised me is the lack of article output. When working on long-form, investigative journalism, I understand that it takes time, which limits the amount you can publish.  However, Houston is not exactly a news desert, and if you want to compete with the many media outlets, you must produce a large number of articles.  Perhaps use some of that funding to produce more daily news. 

Not only that, but the legacy media in Houston is still holding its own.  The Houston Chronicle just won a Pulitzer Prize a few weeks ago. KPRC 2 won a duPont-Columbia journalism award and was nominated for a National Emmy Award, both of which occurred in 2025. These are some of the top accolades in the journalism field.  And I don't have the time and space to mention all the other awards Houston media outlets win every year.  Just go back and read my old posts!

Clint Bourland, 92, legendary Dallas news producer and television pioneer, passed Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020, of natural causes with his wife Mary at his side. For more than two decades until his retirement in 1993, Clint produced news programs for KXAS-TV, Channel 5, working with such local luminaries as Harold Taft, Chip Moody, Jane McGarry, Mike Snyder, David Finfrock, Brad Wright, Bobbie Wygant and some who went on to the networks, such as Bob Schieffer and Charles Murphy.

Ken Hoffman's radio spat with co-hosts on 1560 The Game?

I started getting emails today about Ken Hoffman's radio show on 1560 The Game KGOW in Houston.  Hoffman was saying his co-workers, David Nuno and Raheel Ramzanali (who he says he helped start their radio careers) left and started a show down the radio dial!

Lots of questions, but mikemcguff.com reader Jason thinks this could be a stunt of some sort. Maybe he is right, after all Hoffman does like the WWE!

Ken Hoffman has died

My social media feeds are filled with heartwarming tributes to my all-time favorite Houston columnist, Ken Hoffman who died this weekend.

I said in a recent interview on the 90.1 KPFT "Houston Hour" with Mister McKinney and Heidi Vaughan, that my whole blog is just ripping off Hoffman's TV column work...he just did it way better.  And I could never write the fantastic non-media columns he did.  I am not interesting or witty enough.

When I first started this blog almost 20 years ago, one of my first sit down interviews was with Hoffman who was a columnist with the Houston Chronicle (listen to the interview embedded below).

To be honest, I was totally starstruck. In fact, the photo of Hoffman many people are using in Facebook posts today was the one I took all the way back then. 

He seemed to be notoriously camera shy and wasn't thrilled to take the photo, but was nice enough to do it for me.  We met that day in 2007 to do the interview at the now shuttered JMH Market & Cafe in Hoffman's favorite city of West University where he lived and often wrote about. I framed the interview about his new position with the newly signed on 1560 The Game KGOW, but I just wanted to interview him period.

I would go on to be a Hoffman show guest and usually there was some kind of controversy that followed!  

And you have to know, I really don't know anything about sports.  I am the last person who should be on sports talk radio, but it was Hoffman and no way was I going to miss that opportunity!

The first time, I got in major trouble for going on the air with Hoffman and co-host Raheel Ramzanali with my employer at the time, abc13 KTRK.  I showed up to promote the new abc13.com high school sports section which eventually earned a Lone Star EMMY award.  However, my promotional efforts were not appreciated.  I was asked to write an essay about what I had done.  It was like being back in school.

If anything the luster of working for channel 13 was quickly disappearing after that and I eventually bailed.  So what did I do next?  Went back on as a guest with the Hoff again!  

This time, co-host David Nuno and I hatched a plan to surprise Hoffman.  I arranged a surprise phone call from then KPRC 2 evening anchor Dominique Sachse during the show.  Unfortunately, Hoffman did not like surprises, but his interview with her turned out great!

Speaking of camera shy, I tried to interview Hoffman for my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio."  He had covered the station extensively for the Houston Post, Chronicle and CultureMap, but he did not want to participate.  As he wrote in his own column, he wasn't exactly a fan of the station, but I thought his perspective would be good.  One of many who got away. Still, he was always supportive of my efforts as he covered the film numerous times.

Appearing in his column never got old to me.  He revealed my new gigs, and he was nice enough to reveal his on my blog.   Both of us are night owls because we would email after midnight on multiple occasions.

I would like to hope there was a mutual appreciation between the two of us.  There certainly was a big appreciation from my side.

Rest in peace Hoffy, Houston will miss your humor, witty writing and unique takes.  Where else will be able to learn about H-Town, Beatles, Seinfeld, Reg “Third Degree” Burns...etc.?

David Nuño leaves abc13 KTRK for TexAgs

David Nuño is leaving the abc13 KTRK sports department and Houston to join the TexAgs website in Bryan - College Station as the site's Director of Broadcast Media.

“I am coming home,” Nuño said on TexAgs. “I have always had a love for the Bryan-College Station area. There are two things in sports that get my blood going: Texas A&M and Real Madrid soccer. There is nothing like A&M sports. I’ve always thought about one day relocating. It’s the perfect area at the perfect time."

TexAgs is an independent website that covers Texas A&M University sports.

Nuño has a connection to Aggieland, he attended TAMU graduating in 1999.  He also was the sports anchor for KXXV Waco, Temple, Killeen which broadcasts to the Brazos Valley through KRHD-Bryan/College Station. 

When Nuño arrived at KTRK in 2012, the native Houstonian was known to sports fans during his time as a radio host on Yahoo! Sports Radio and 1560 The Game KGOW.  In fact, on his channel 13 "No Layups" podcast with Raheel Ramzanali, the former KGOW duo interviewed Chance McClain about their time with the Houston sports station. Double Rods!

Even when not working in broadcasting, Nuño was still all about sports, working for the Harris County Houston Sports Authority and Dallas Mavericks.

Nuño works at KTRK until June 25. His first show on TexAgs Radio will be July 6.  

Now the only problem is that Nuño's wife, Elizabeth, attended the University of Texas. 

“She is an Aggie at heart,” he said on TexAgs. “My kids are all Aggies. They don’t even know about the Longhorns.”

Yeah, but will she ever give the "Horns Down" sign?

2021 has turned out to be a busy year for departures at the normally stable abc13 KTRK.  Now, including Nuño, the following exits have happened or been announced:

North Texas Athletics and exclusive multimedia rights holder Mean Green Sports Properties announced a new radio home for Mean Green Football radio broadcasts in the Dallas-Fort Worth market on the iHeartMedia Dallas network. Beginning with the 2025 season opener, all Mean Green Football radio broadcasts will air live on Talk Radio 1190 KFXR AM for the entirety of the 2025 and 2026 football seasons.
