Chance McClain of 1560 The Game talks about new film "Horrible Turn"

Chance McClain is the program director of 1560 The Game KGOW but is also a man of many, many talents. You probably know him for his music releases such as Yao Ming Song and The Big Puma. Now he and collaborator Frank Bullington (KGOW too) have shot an entire musical to release on the Internet. The film is called Horrible Turn and hits the Web for your pleasure November 10, 2009. Mike McGuff: So what made a radio guy like yourself think, "It's time to shoot a full musical?"

Chance McClain: I have wanted to write and direct a movie for a long time. I got swept up in Dr. Horrible mania and decided to give it a go. I figured if I was going to shoot a movie , why not do a musical? Most of the people that worked on the film have some kind of musical background so everything came very naturally to us.

MM: What's the summary of Horrible Turn?

CM: Boy meets girl, love blossoms, bad things happen, boy turns evil.

MM: Was it all shot in Houston? Where did you shoot?

CM: The movie was shot in and around Houston. We used my house in Spring, the office at 1560 The Game, Upper Hand Hair Salon in River Oaks, Strake Jesuit High School, a residence in Memorial, and a surprise shot in Galveston.

MM: How long did the production take?

CM: The first draft of the script was completed on March 11. Most of the music was written by the end of May. We shot over the summer in 24 days. Editing and post-production has taken us up to now.

MM: Who are the stars of the film and where did you find them?

CM: All of the actors are local. Most from around the musical theater scene. Tyce Green plays Billy. Jacob Buras plays Kenny. Kristin Massa plays the Aussie Katie. Christian Haile is Johnny. Dominic DiFelice is Wade. We did a casting call in June. I think and a lot of the actors were cast from that.

MM: Any celebrity cameos in the film?

CM: A certain Spencer Tillman gets behind the newsdesk again...Sean 'The Cablinasian' Pendergast is in the movie. Raheel Ramzanali and Kevin G. Joseph wear skirts in the film.

MM: How many 1560 The Game references did you fit in?

CM: There are a ton. The mic flag in a shot is the only obvious one.

MM: Anything else you want to add?

CM: Dr. Horrible is pretty much required viewing to fully appreciate the movie. It stands on its own ok but I highly recommend folks picking up a DVD of Dr. Horrible or watching it on Hulu before peeping Horrible Turn. Remember, it is fan art. I am a fan of Joss Whedon and wanted to make a movie about Dr. Horrible. Part of the marketing they did with Dr. Horrible was inviting the fans to submit video applications for the Evil League of Evil. Unfortunately we did not have time to send one in so went the prequel route instead. I hope the music is well received, we busted our ass on it. I hope people can appreciate that the film was done by volunteers, in spare time, and on a limited budget.

1560 The Game: KGOW's first day review

I emailed Ken Hoffman after his first day on the air at 1560 The Game KGOW and in classic Hoffman form he replied with this:

"I think the owners of Earplugs Inc. owe me a finder's fee for what I
did on radio today."

His was the only show I listened to Monday. He did a good job. I hear it was rougher for the Houston Chronicle's Richard Justice though. People told me he was on fire during the Bud Selig interview, but by himself you got a lot of "uhhs" and pauses. Chalk it up to first day jitters I guess.

Justice's Chron colleague David Barron reported on Justice's problems and more on his blog. According to Barron, the station's transmitter isn't doing so well, so much of Houston probably couldn't receive the signal. I picked it up pretty well.

I guess the 1560 KILE days are finally over and we can just concentrate on 1560 The Game KGOW.

HouStoned has noticed that most of the Houston Chronicle's sports columnist have radio shows or appear on the radio now. According to the Press' blog, Jeff Cohen, the Houston Chronicle's editor, is getting mad about some of his writers pimping products on the air. I always wondered about this when Deborah Duncan had a show on KTRH and read commercials, but KHOU must have not cared.

Lance Zierlein exits Sports Radio 610 KILT in Houston?

Lance Zierlein has taken off his KILT and left Sports Radio 610 AM says the Chron's David Barron. Where will he go next?:

Zierlein declined Saturday to address rumors that he will join former KILT partner John Granato on the soon-to-be-reformatted KILE (1560 AM) or will seek a position with one of Houston's two other sports-talk stations -- KBME (790 AM) or KFNC (97.5 FM).

At this point, reports have Granato hosting a morning drive-ime show at 1560, which will have new call letters when it launches its new format later this year, with Sean Pendergast, the former Houstonian who is a five-time winner of the Jim Rome smack-off.

New 1560 The Game KGOW night show with Nuño and Raheel

Last week I blogged Where is 1560 KGOW The Game's David Nuno going? after word former Jim Rome producer Travis Rodgers was taking over his and Ken Hoffman's time slot. Nuno told me he was sticking at 1560 The Game.

Now we know more about just what he will be doing.

Turns out David Nuno and Raheel Ramzanali will host a live remote show together Monday nights just in time for Monday Night Football. The above video is a comedic announcement about the new show, complete with pool cue fighting and funny sound effects!

Chance McClain, formerly of 1560 The Game, scores with musical

First of all, I want to get out of the way that there have been some changes at 1560 The Game KGOW...sort of. Owner Gow Broadcasting, which also owns national network Sporting News Radio (and uses 1560 talent) has merged with Yahoo! to create Yahoo! Sports Radio. You can read more about that here.

Now on to the news that I want to talk about. Former 1560 The Game program director Chance McClain has entered a new phase of his life and it is very different from his work getting KGOW-AM on the air. You might remember about me blogging on how McClain wrote a musical and put it on film. Now he has written a stage musical that was accepted into the New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF).

"NYMF is basically the Sundance Film Festival for musical theater and my entry is a huge honor," McClain told mikemcguff.com. "There are several interesting things about it, namely I have cast my primarily teen show here in Houston and a whole gaggle of people are going to New York for two weeks for the festival. Our amateurs will be competing against New York professionals."

He says it is a David vs Goliath thing.

The show is called Kissless. The description is:

An awkward misfit is forced to live with an uber-jock and his quirky family over summer break. An inconvenient love develops, threatening the rigid social structure of Forest Glen High School. Kissless's score bounces from pop to rock to traditional Broadway to country ... with a little Glee glitter on top. This production features a cast of Texas teenagers, descending upon the Big Apple with stars in their eyes, just enough money for a fake ID and an "I Heart NY" tattoo, and every intention of rocking your world.

1560 KGOW's David Nuno now hosts RIVALS on Yahoo! Sports Radio

David Nuno of 1560 The Game KGOW and Yahoo! Sports Radio fame is one busy dude! Not only is he hosting his mid-day show on 1560 The Game, he has added a brand new show to Yahoo! Sports Radio.

Just launched is his new show RIVALS on Yahoo! Sports Radio, Monday-Friday from 9p-12a CT. Nuno will be interviewing the big name coaches in Division 1 college sports plus talking to the Rivals.com experts.

John Harris’ Overnight Takeover will begin one hour early and air from 12-5 CST. Todd Wright will become the lead in for Rivals Radio on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

Where is 1560 KGOW The Game's David Nuno going?

Last night I blogged how former Jim Rome producer Travis Rodgers is replacing Ken Hoffman on 1560 The Game. So where does that leave Hoffman's co-host David Nuno? Readers are sure wondering.

I talked to Nuno and he says he's not going anywhere. He is still the sports director of the station and very much a 1560 The Game guy. In fact, Nuno is going to start working more on Sporting News Radio, the recently KGOW acquired national sports network. You'll be able to experience him in an anchor/reporter type role.

You'll already have a chance to hear Nuno and Raheel Ramzanali this Thursday night (7 to 9pm) doing a special live remote show on The Game too. These two already make TV appearances together you might remember.

Nuno adds he will definitely miss Hoffman. They spent some good years together.

"I think Hoffman has a brilliant radio mind and is one of the best interviewers in Houston," Nuno told the mikemcguff.com blog.

No doubt Hoffman will be back on the radio somewhere. He's been on it since he worked with John Lander and the Q Morning Zoo at the Top 40 version of 93Q KKBQ.

Ken Hoffman returns to 1560 The Game KGOW

I was happy to see that Houston Chronicle columnist Ken Hoffman is returning to 1560 The Game KGOW. He announced the big news in his column:

Proving that I never learn, I am returning to radio station KGOW-AM (1560 "The Game"). Starting next week, I will co-host a show every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon with fellow Houston Chronicle columnist Richard Justice. He thinks the name of the show should be The Richard Justice Show. We'll let him keep thinking that.

I've already scheduled an appointment with a chiropractor. I know my back is going to hurt carrying him.
I was on KGOW for almost three years, between 2008 and 2010. Obviously it ended badly, but the dream of one day joining Russ "The Weird Beard" Knight, Ken "Hub Cap" Carter and the Light Crust Doughboys in the Texas Radio Hall of Fame is bringing me back.

How will I explain my absence this past year? I'm going to say I committed a crime in Florida, and I was sitting in jail, when all of a sudden a jury found me not guilty …

If I ever got a chance to host a talk radio show, Hoffman is one of the people I would want to co-host with.

Why isn't Alyson Footer on with John and Lance anymore? At first I thought it was b/c she took a position with the Astros but then she was on with Sean and John for a while. She threw a tweet out the other day saying happy b-day to 1560 "even though you voted me off the island". What happened there???? Thanks!

Here is what 1560 The Game program director Chance McClain told me over email:

We love, love, love Footer. When her job switched from working for MLB.com to working for Astros we thought it would be best to not put her in a position of having to give tough and critical opinions of her direct employer. We still have a weekly paid Astros guy in the morning.

Live From The QZ with Chance McClain helping Texas musicians

Chance McClain (formerly of SportsRadio 610 KILT and 1560 The Game) has been throwing a live concert series that is benefiting the Texas musicians that are playing.

It's called Live From The QZ.

Watch out for an appearance by McClain's former colleague Raheel Ramzanali as host too!

I reached out to McClain for more info and he sent back this nice email that explains it all:

As soon as the coronavirus shutdown started becoming real I, along with half the country, recognized a certain level of stir craziness was forthcoming. At my company, I primarily film people from 70-100 years old so I knew I would be shelved for a good while. So I talked with my buddy Patrick Brogdon about putting "something" together. I have friends in the music world and friends in the comedy world and my office is on my 8-acres in the middle of nowhere. And I built a stage for the hell of it years ago. And together with Patrick, we have a ton of high end equipment...cameras, mics, professional streaming gear, lights... All of these "ands" pointed towards putting together a variety show safely tucked away in the Magnolia woods.


The first show we did, I had three bands booked, two comedians, and a host. But this was Tuesday, March 24th, very early in the "shutdown." Over the course of that day, bands began dropping over sensitivity towards the virus. Then the comedians bowed out. Even the host, Raheel Ramzanali, out of an abundance of caution, decided to play it safe. Two hours before the show, I had nothing. No talent, no host. Just a stage, gear, Patrick, and my small work crew. Then I got a call from Josh Fuller, the lead singer and titular character of The Josh Fuller Band, and he said the band's not coming but I am.

Joah showed up and played for about 3 hours of covers and original music. It was glorious. It was such a needed diversion, and it was totally safe. We took our guidance from the CDC and State of Texas websites and played it by the rules. Keep in mind, everything was 100% volunteer. We had no expectation of any money. By the end of the night people had sent over $600 to my venmo. I distributed it to the guys and it was a fun, memorable night.

Since then, we have had five Live from the QZ shows. We've enhanced the little stage, and have enjoyed the talents of The Josh Fuller Band, Caleb and the Homegrown Tomatoes, and Shane Temple play the stage. Different iterations of those same talented folks have played our "side stage" to give the band a break. We set up a separate area by my fire pit. Raheel has hosted several of the shows bringing his unique talent, personality, and perspective to what we still consider a healthy diversion during stressful times.


It's very laid back. Very laid back. My dogs usually end up being a part of the show. As the restrictions ebb and flow, we have been having guests come to watch the show live, each in their little clusters around the stage, always sensitive to social distancing, but happy to have a sense of community.

Each show, people send money to venmo and the people that perform or work get some running money. These musicians don't have venues for the time being so I hope this lark is providing them an opportunity to unwind, perform, and expend some of the artistic angst that builds up. Their stresses are alleviated by Dillon Benoit, our audio engineer. They've all worked with him before and they are able to focus on their performance knowing that he will mix a great show.

We close every show with Amazing Grace as a tip of the hat to Michael Berry, who lost The RCC to the financial constraints of the coronavirus.

We plan to keep the shows going every week or two until society renormalizes. Whether it's the old normal or a new normal is immaterial. We want the shows to look better and run smoother each week. We want the artists to feel appreciated and we want the audience to realize that, despite the madness, we will be ok. And a little diversion every now and then helps.

I guessed 1560 KILE The Game on 6/11, Imus back? and KPRC does some cutting

Richard Justice is going to 1560 KILE says David Barron:

Chronicle columnist Richard Justice will join Houston's newest sports talk station, KILE (1560 AM) when it launches as "The Game" later this summer.

Justice says he will host a show from 10 a.m. to noon after considering and turning down opportunities to join the other three sports talk stations in the market. His show will follow John Granato's morning drive show and precede Chronicle columnist Ken Hoffman's afternoon show.

John Harris and Sean Pendergast will work afternoon drive, and Spencer Tillman will voice promos and intros and contribute to Granato's show, said KILE owner David Gow.

Here is what I am amazed about. On June 11th, I wrote a post about naming 1560 KILE. My first choice for a station name was "The Game." Look above at what Barron said the name of the station will be, "The Game." That is amazing! I promise no one told me that would be the name either.

This sports radio thing is weird because it has Chronicle writers reporting on and breaking news about each other. This is some real investigative journalism.

In other news, it looks like Don Imus will be back on the radio. Could it be CBS Radio? I'm not sure that I care.

I heard about this one a few days ago and now KPRC Local 2 announces it is cutting half of its 4pm newscast. Extra will take that half hour over.

On an NBC related note, the network says it is funny on Thursday despite the ratings. It must not be as must see as it used to. Hey, but I do love The Office.
