Brittany Begley gets national coverage for TV industry criticisms

Brittany Begley was recently featured in the New York Post and the Daily Mail after writing an Instagram post about the TV industry, specifically the lack of Emmy awards for traffic reporting and the overall decline in standards.

The post was first featured by Scott Jones of FTVLive.

Begley now works as a weekend morning meteorologist for KPRC 2 in Houston. In fact, KPRC hasn't had a dedicated traffic person in years, but recently posted a morning traffic anchor job.

"KPRC is aware of the post," Sean McLaughlin, vice president and general manager of the Houston station, told The Post.

Begley was still performing her weather duties this weekend.

The coverage framed Begley's post as going after colleagues for normalizing “bad behavior,” but to me and others I've talked to, it's not clear that she is talking about her current KPRC colleagues, but actually ones from her past stations. 

It was a busy week for KPRC 2 as we saw departures from reporter Gage Goulding and longtime investigative reporter Robert Arnold.

Begley joined the KPRC 2 Houston weather team in early 2024, succeeding longtime Houston meteorologist Khambrel Marshall, who announced his retirement in November 2023 and officially signed off the following month.

Begley came to Houston from KRON 4 in San Francisco, where she had served as a freelance meteorologist since June 2022.

Before KRON, Begley spent four years at ABC10 KXTV in Sacramento, California, working as an anchor, meteorologist, and reporter from 2018 to 2022. During her time there, she covered a variety of weather events and delivered daily forecasts while contributing to news coverage.

Her broadcasting career included several stops within TEGNA stations. Prior to Sacramento, Begley worked at WBNS 10 in Columbus, Ohio, as a traffic anchor and reporter. Before that, she served as a social media host and traffic reporter at WCNC in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Between those roles, Begley also worked as a traffic reporter at WDTN 2 in Dayton, Ohio.

Begley attended Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and later continued her meteorology education through Mississippi State University.

Brittany Begley joins KPRC 2

Brittany Begley is joining the KPRC 2 Houston weather team as the weekend morning meteorologist.

Khambrel Marshall announced his retirement in November 2023 officially signing off in December from that position.

She joins chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley, KPRC 2 News Today’s Anthony Yanez, and meteorologists Caroline Brown, Daji Aswad and Justin Stapleton.

Begley comes from KRON 4 San Francisco (see who left Houston for KRON), where she has been a freelance meteorologist since June 2022.

Called a “jack-of-all-trades” in her bio, there is truth to that as Begley was an anchor/meteorologist/reporter for ABC10 KXTV Sacramento, California, from 2018 to 2022.

KXTV is a TEGNA station, and so were Begley's previous stations, WBNS 10 Columbus, Ohio, where she was a traffic anchor/reporter, and WCNC Charlotte, North Carolina, where she was a social media host/traffic reporter.

In between the last two stations, Begley worked as a traffic reporter for WDTN 2 Dayton, Ohio.

She attended Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC, and Mississippi State University.

Aswad was the previously newly hired meteorologist for Channel 2's weather department.

Houston media honored at NABJ Sneaker Ball Scholarship Gala

Houston media stars were honored last Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the historical Eldorado Ballroom in Third Ward for the Houston Association of Black Journalists Sneaker Ball Scholarship Gala.

"The night was about giving flowers to those who deserve it - those who are making things happen but don’t ask for pats on the back because they are just doing what they love," Nakia Cooper, HABJ president told mikemcguff.com. "We tapped into every genre and generation and danced the night away in fly footwear but the most important thing for us was honoring our dear (forever) mayor Sylvester Turner and thanking him for an outstanding eight years."

Khambrel Marshall just celebrated 24 years with KPRC 2 in 2023 and this morning announced he will be retiring from the station on Wednesday, December 13th.

"For almost 48 years, I have been blessed to work in this amazing industry that has put me in positions of responsibility as sports director, news anchor, executive producer, and meteorologist in six stations in five states," Khambrel said on the KPRC website.  "Thirty-six of those years have been with Post-Newsweek/Graham Media stations, and it has been an honor to work with and for the best station group in the country. It’s simply time to rest."

Marshall who is the host/producer of "Houston Newsmakers," weekend morning meteorologist and head of the KPRC 2 Internship program has also served as an anchor and news manager with channel 2.

"Not many people can boast that they’ve spent a lifetime in service to their community. Then again, there’s no one quite like Khambrel Marshall. He’s an original," KPRC 2′s General Manager Phil Lane added. "During election season, he’s our political specialist, deftly moving from issue to issue and candidate to candidate, helping to break down political issues to ensure viewers are prepared and educated about upcoming elections. Telemundo Houston, KPRC 2, ¡Que Onda! Magazine and League of Women Voters host Houston mayoral debate

HOUSTON, TX – October 9, 2023 – Telemundo Houston KTMD-TV, KPRC 2, ¡Que Onda! Magazine and The League of Women Voters will host a mayoral debate on Tuesday, October 10. 

The debate will be live at 7PM from Dunham Theater at Houston Christian University and broadcast on KPRC 2, KPRC 2+ and www.Click2Houston.com and Telemundo Houston’s digital platforms www.TelemudoHouston.com and streaming on Samsung TV Plus channel 1255, Roku channel 904, FireTV, XumoPlay, freevee and  LocalNow.

The 1-hour debate, moderated by KTMD’s Crystal Ayala and KPRC’s Daniella Guzman, will include 5 of the qualifying candidates, determined by the number of individual campaign donors, discussing their vision of Houston’s future specifically related to crime, city infrastructure, disaster preparation as well as equity and equality in housing and employment. The remaining candidates were each invited to record statements that will air immediately following the debate at 8PM. All 18 campaigns were informed and aware of the debate parameters.

Former KPRC 2 anchor Linda Lorelle made an appearance on her old station's "Houston Newsmakers" with Khambrel Marshall to talk about her scholarship fund gala on September 30, 2023.  

The fund is celebrating 32 years of helping Houston students. 

KPRC 2 adds to Saturday morning newscasts

KPRC 2 is adding an extra hour to its Saturday morning newscast with anchors Cathy Hernandez and Brittany Jeffers with meteorologist Khambrel Marshall.  

Hernandez said on a Facebook video that channel 2 has expanded with a 9am to 10am Saturday morning newscast. So that means now there is news from 6am to 7am and 8am all the way to 10am.

According to an older schedule on the station's website, before this weekend, Saturday morning news offerings previously went 6am to 7am and 8:30am to 9:30am.

Khambrel Marshall celebrates 70th birthday!

Regular readers will know that most of the time, I am posting about people leaving the TV industry, which makes Marshall is a true television survivor considering he's been with channel 2 since 1999! 

Marshall was born at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina since his father, Cambrel, was a first sergeant in the US Army.  Maybe the many moves around the world made him adaptable.

And adaptable the legendary bowtie wearing Houston TV figure has been throughout his career and especially since coming to KPRC.   A lesson that today's TV newsroom staffers need to learn...especially in the current environment.

When Marshall joined KPRC in May 2999, he was actually a news anchor for the then named News2Houston at Noon, First at Four and News2Houston at Five. The News2Houston moniker, while a great sounding name, turned out to be a tarnished brand from the station's more tabloidish days starting in the 1994 when Post Newsweek bough the station from the Hobby family. But that's all in the past now. Marshall is still here going strong!

There were a few years starting in the mid-2000s when channel 2 viewers didn't see Marshall on the newscasts much anymore.  He went off-air into a news manger role as an executive producer during years when the station was shedding its 'Hard Copy' image.

At the same time, the self proclaimed "weather geek" earned his broadcast meteorology certification from Mississippi State University. That led him to going back on-air as the weekend morning meteorologist when Eric Braate left the station for the first time. 

However, with so much news experience and numerous journalism awards including an EMMY, Marshall added hosting/producing "Houston Newsmakers," (formerly called "Beyond the Headlines") a Sunday morning affairs show, to his list of duties.  This blogger has been fortunate enough to appear on the show and I can attest it is truly a one person show as Marshall does it all to get each week's episode on the air.

Marshall, who grew up in a family of teachers, (his mother, Francetta, earned a master’s degree in sociology) is very committed to volunteer service, which is a natural fit for a this type of show.

In fact, the host has been honored by the March of Dimes and has been the board chair for the YMCA Greater Houston Area. He sits on other boards ranging from the Holocaust Museum Houston, the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center and the A.D. Players at the George Theater.

This call to help has also led Marshall to run the KPRC 2 internship program and a station reporter trainee program. One of his famous trainees is now evening anchor Daniella Guzman.

Now, here is a twist to the story.  Marshall actually started in the TV news biz as a sports anchor!  Yes, so if one person has to do all of the jobs one day, Marshall can do news, weather and sports, plus host a half-hour show.  I am not trying to give today's TV owners any ideas with this concept by the way. 

Before KPRC, Marshall worked for WPLG 10 Miami as a news anchor.  However, he joined the station in 1985 as its first Black sports anchor. A move to the news anchor chair came after a call in 1992 to anchor during Hurricane Andrew coverage.

Before South Florida TV, Marshall worked sports anchoring duties for WFSB 3 Hartford, Connecticut. He also worked as a sportscaster in Detroit and the Phoenix CBS affiliate where he started his career while attending Arizona State University.

For his 20th KPRC 2 anniversary, Marshall said he wanted 10 more years, so here's to it!

As for his personal life, Marshall and wife, Debbie, have been blessed with three daughters and three grandchildren.  They've been married since 1979, but that's an anniversary celebration for an entire other post.

Sorry I spoiled the surprise. But you're kinda stuck with me at this point if you want to read about Texas media news. 

In my defense, my readers cannot get enough news about KPRC 2 talent.  Have you ever actually looked at my top stories list?  For the most part, it's generally full of channel 2 Houston news.  

Don't worry other Houston stations, I still love you, and will keep posting about you no matter what!

Roseann Rogers AKA 'The Buzz Lady' returns on 'Houston Life'

Roseann Rogers AKA "The Buzz Lady" is one of the latest former KPRC 2 personalities to return to co-host the station's afternoon lifestyle show "Houston Life" with Derrick Shore.

This one is being posted late because I've been in three time zones in the last two weeks.   Rogers actually guest co-hosted during spring break and it came on my radar even when I wasn't in Texas! 

"The response on Facebook and Instagram has been truly overwhelming," Rogers told mikemcguff.com.  "Everyone remembers me and being 'The Buzz Lady.' Reading comments from so many family members, friends, former colleagues and viewers seriously brought tears to my eyes.  I loved being a story-teller and having the opportunity to do that on KPRC Channel 2 was my dream job! I believe so many people remember me because it was before social media took over and when you're in three to four newscasts a day, a lot of people will see your segments."

For those new to Houston television, Rogers was known as "The Buzz Lady" because she hosted the channel 2 entertainment segment called "The Buzz" which debuted, if memory serves, around the same time then 107.5 The Buzz KTBZ signed on the air.  Houston was buzzy back then. 

H-Town media insiders will know that Rogers also worked as KPRC's marketing director later on.  She would go on to work on-air for the now defunct version of 55 KTBU, KHOU 11 and abc13 KTRK. In addition to PR roles, she also worked as the Houston Chronicle's VP of Strategic Marketing and Development.

Rogers eventually moved to Nashville where she now works in marketing. 

"Coming back from Nashville to co-host at my former station: GREAT," Rogers told me.  "I was surprised that I wasn't nervous at all, but rather super excited to be back in the studio again. It did feel a little bit like coming home. I really enjoyed working with the Houston Life team of producers, including supervising producer Heather Kansteiner and Derrick Shore, the show's talented host, is such a pro! He made me look so good. Heather and I had some really good laughs looking at old footage and stories of me back in the day!"

After leaving KPRC in 2008, Rogers relished the chance to see old friends.

"Khambrel Marshall and I have kept in touch over the years, but seeing him in person brought back a flood of wonderful memories of us working together," she added.  "He remembers when I was pregnant with my son Nikhil and now he's graduating in May.  How time flies and he's for sure aging backwards!" 

In case you missed it, "Houston Life" has been utilizing guest co-hosts since Courtney Zavala left Houston Life in early January 2023.  Zavala later issued this video.

KPRC 2 Houston weekend morning newscast viewers saw Cathy Hernandez and Brittany Jeffers behind the news desk Sunday, and from what mikemcguff.com understands, this is the new permanent 2023 "KPRC 2 News Today" weekend morning anchor team along with longtime meteorologist Khambrel Marshall.

Hernandez and Jeffers apparently are not just fill-in anchoring as they have been off and on (with a mix of other KPRC talent), after Sofia Ojeda left the newscast last summer.

No word on which newscast Sabirah Rayford, who was hired to anchor the KPRC 2 News Today weekend morning news in 2021, will anchor from this point on.  Either way, she will still be a reporter during the week based on her normal schedule.

Hernandez joined KPRC as a temporary reporter from KDVR and KWGN Denver in 2015.

The Houston native was made a full-time reporter in 2016. The University of Houston grad got her TV start as channel 2 associate producer, later moving on to KTSM 9 News and CBS4 Local KDBC El Paso. 

A former Houston Texans cheerleader, Hernandez recently returned to her NFL cheerleading duties for an alumni performance. She recently gave birth to her second daughter.  

Jeffers joined KPRC as a reporter in 2018 from CBS 11 KTVT Dallas - Fort Worth (now known as CBS News Texas as of February 2023). 

A finalist in the Miss America competition as Miss Nebraska, Jeffers previously worked for FOX23 KOKI-Tulsa, OK and KLKN Channel 8 in Lincoln, NE.  

Jeffers gave birth to her second child, a baby son, in 2021.
