Mike Leslie, a WFAA 8 Dallas - Fort Worth sports reporter/anchor is getting attention on a sports site and social media for his recent opinion commentary concerning the hiring of new Texas A&M head football coach Mike Elko from Duke.
Here is a portion of what Leslie said in the above video:
"I'm excited for Elko. I think he's genuinely a very good hire for A&M. And I think he's the type of grounded, substantive hire that A&M needed, after years of more flash than anything else.
But Elko in his press conference on Monday said something that just doesn't compute for me. He talked about how A&M is going to fulfill their potential as 'the premier football program in the country,' and that 'the best version of Texas A&M wins national championships.'
And I just want to ask: Based on what? Texas A&M, their fans, their boosters -- they all believe their program should be among the elite in college football. Based on what?"
I get that TV stations want their anchors and reporters to get "engagement" online. And from what I saw on X, he did get lots of engagement.
But for those not in Texas, you don't want to anger the Aggie fanbase. They are passionate and there are a lot of them! I even saw Leslie getting heat from TV staffer at another Texas station!
Leslie has been with WFAA since April 2015.
