ABC13 photojournalist Mike Menchaca toasted by legendary anchors

Mike Menchaca, a photojournalist with ABC13 KTRK Houston for over three decades who just retired, was toasted by family and current and former Channel 13 colleagues Friday night.

Menchaca's wife, Traci, threw the party and told the crowd how she met Mike by calling the Channel 13 sports department!  Now you know KTRK is all about news, weather, sports...and love!

Retired KTRK photojournalist Jaime Zamora read a proclamation by Houston Mayor John Whitmire and emotionally recounted how he and Menchaca, friends for decades, helped each other through the Texas television landscape from Corpus Christi to KVUE Austin and KTRK.

In thanking everyone for coming to his retirement party, Menchaca remembered those who were important to him and who couldn't attend. He mentioned names like 13 Outdoorsman Thom Dickerson, Bob Allen, Tim Melton, and former KTRK general manager Jim Masucci.

Iconic anchors and reporters such as Shara Fryer, Tom Koch, Don Nelson, Don Kobos, Art Rascon, Deborah Wrigley, and Jeff McShan were there to honor Menchaca. 

I saw current KTRK staffers celebrating the legendary photographer, including Jessica Willey, Jeff Ehling, Pooja Lodhia, Mycah Hatfield, Joe Gleason, Chaz Miller, Courtney Fischer, Rosie Nguyen, Pat Tobin, Damion Smith, David Aguillard, John Carreon, and Doug Schurtz among others.

Menchaca and I reminisced about our trip to Central Texas to interview the legendary Cadet Don, AKA Al Eisenman, who entertained Channel 13's younger viewers on weekday mornings from 1959 to 1968. Now, before you ask, no, I can't remember if we got to "meet" his pal Seymour or not! The Houston Chronicle even mentions our Cadet Don story!

Bob Slovak returns to abc13 in a non-sports role

Bob Slovak is returning to abc13 KTRK Houston, but this time, it won't be in the sports department where he worked for more than two decades until 2020.

Here is what Slovak posted on Facebook:

"Big news to share… I’ve started my new job at ABC13 Houston. I’ve been hired as a Reporter/Content Creator in ABC13 Houston Programming/ Special Projects Department. 

I’m so excited to be back with the incredibly talented team.  

I’ll be working on the ABC13 Localish series as well as Big Events and Special Projects. Super pumped about this opportunity, can’t wait to tell your story. If you see me out and about please come up and say hello. #blessed"

The former KTRK weekend sports anchor/reporter left the station in September 2020 which he blamed on pandemic cuts.

Slovak joined channel 13 Houston back as a reporter in 1998 along side Bob Allen and Tim Melton.

He took over as weekend sports anchor in 2013, when Melton suffered a stroke.

The Stephen F. Austin University grad previously worked for ABC15 KNXV Phoenix, News on 6 KOTV Tulsa, KFDM Beaumont and KTEN 10 Sherman.

In between his times at abc13, Slovak did play by play for high school games on the old KUBE 57.  He also served as a University of Houston's Jack J. Valenti School of Communication adjunct professor.

Bob Slovak has announced he is leaving the abc13 KTRK sports department after more than two decades.

Here is what he posted on Facebook today:

The challenges of the year 2020 have been many but we keep our faith. My time at KTRK ABC13 will be coming to an end in a few weeks.

My job like so many others a misfortune of the Covid-19 pandemic. We move on with a lot to be thankful for.

I would like to thank ABC13 for an awesome 22 year run, so many great memories. I want to thank all of the ABC13 viewers for letting me come into your homes and living rooms for the last two decades plus to talk Sports.

I got into this business 34 years ago because of the passion and the way Sports makes us all feel. I got that from my Dad, I can still hear him yelling at the Cowboys games on the TV.

I've tried to present my Sports coverage in a fun way and I hope you enjoyed it with me. I want to thanks all of the Coaches and Players I have gotten to know in the Houston area over the years, thanks for letting me tell your stories. I move on to new opportunities and challenges if you have one for me let me know.

We keep moving forward. God has a plan. God Bless.

One of the rare TV folks who eschews coffee for Diet Dr Pepper, Slovak joined KTRK in 1998 as the sports reporter alongside longtime Houston sports anchors Bob Allen and Tim Melton.

In 2013, when Melton suffered from a stroke and had to retire from the TV business, Slovak moved from sports reporter to weekend sports anchor.

"People will ask me, you know, 'what's your favorite part of your job?' I'm like, 'well, I get in all the big sporting events for free' and they go, 'well, what's the worst part of your job?' 'Well, I'm working,' Slovak jokingly said in a recent interview.

Slovak has earned honors from the Edward R. Murrow, EMMY and Associated Press awards.

In this spare time, you might find Slovak rocking out at a concert by greats such as the Rolling Stones or Foo Fighters (at least back when you could attend shows).

Before channel 13 and Houston, Slovak worked at KNXV Phoenix, KOTV Tulsa, KFDM Beaumont and KTEN Ada, Oklahoma.

 

The Dallas native graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, but don't think his DFW roots totally dictate his fan sensibilities when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans.

"I grew up in Dallas...you know, Cowboys, Cowboys, Cowboys," Slovak once said. "Lived in Houston now 21 years, so I cheer for both. People say you can't do that. When they play each other, I kind of just say who wins is OK, but I'll I'll cheer for both of them."

And to show his love for sports, Slovak said if his television news sports career hadn't have happened, he would have been in some other form of athletics.

"I would probably be a coach on some level, high school or college coach," he said in the interview. "When I first got out of school, that was my backup plan. If I couldn't find a job in TV, I was going to go into coaching, football, coaching."

After his long career at channel 13, Slovak has done play by play for high school games on KUBE 57.  He also noted on his Twitter bio that he is serving as an adjunct professor at the University of Houston's Jack J. Valenti School of Communication.

Houston TV sports reunion with Tim Melton as guest of honor

Houston sports fan would have done a double take if they had been at Goode Company Armadillo Palace on Kirby Thursday afternoon.

Former abc13 KTRK assistant news director/reporter Don Kobos arranged a mini-reunion of Houston TV sports departments with representatives from channels 2, 11 and 13.

Longtime abc13 KTRK weekend sports anchor for many decades, Tim Melton, was the guest of honor. You might remember that Melton suffered a stroke in 2011. I am happy to report I hear he is doing well.

Some of those I hear that were in attendance to toast Melton were Bob Slovak (KTRK), Randy McIlvoy (KPRC), Greg Bailey (KTRK), Tom Koch (KTRK), Butch Alsandor (former KHOU Sports Anchor), KPRC 2 news director Dave Strickland, Jaime Zamora (former KTRK photographer), Joe Gleason (KTRK sports producer) and Ted Markus (former KTRK sports producer).

This is the end of a Houston TV era...


It is only fitting that after receiving the key to the city from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett declaring May 3rd his day, that KTRK abc13 50 year anchor and Guinness World Records holder Dave Ward was apparently having enough of the adulation.

"I told Laura (Ward) I'm getting sick and tired of hearing crap about Dave Ward to tell you the truth," the legendary anchor told the throng of TV cameras and gathered crowd of loyal viewers in front of Houston City Hall (even competing TV stations showed up to cover Ward's honor).

Before his public words, Ward spent more than an hour signing autographs for a long line of fans. I'm sure it's not that the TV newsman wasn't thrilled after the last 48 hours of people celebrating his esteemed journalism career, but if you know Ward, it makes sense. While a larger than life presence in your television, in real life, he is a quiet and modest guy.

And the accolades were not over for Ward. After the public event was over, all of the KTRK staff and dignitaries, were ushered into the Houston City Hall Legacy room for a luncheon and video preview of a Dave Ward documentary to air on channel 13 this Sunday night (UPDATE: “Good Evening Friends, I’m Dave Ward” airs Sunday night at 10:35pm).

The day before had been an emotional whirlwind for Ward from what I am told. It all started with his big sendoff from KTRK. He addressed the newsroom staff in the afternoon for the last time in a very frank and honest way from what I hear. Then it was time to prepare for his official goodbye from the Disney ABC Television Group stations's 6pm newscast. The ratings were very good from what I'm told.

With the many of the staff in the studio, Ward said goodbye to his loyal newscast audience for the last time. Viewers like myself were not even alive when he started with the station in 1966. Ward has been like a member of the family telling us about the good, bad and the ugly. From the highs of Houston Rockets championships to the lows of wars and terrorist attacks, Houston tuned in to watch what Uncle Dave had to report. In the good times, we could celebrate with him, in the bad times, maybe in some way he could calm us down and reassure us things would get better.

And with Dave Ward, you know you were getting the story straight. In the era of fake news, we can appreciate a time when anchors like Ward just gave us the facts without the tabloid sensationalism other stations dabbled in.

I was recently talking with a professional media writer who said things won't be the same anymore without Ward in the anchor chair. The end of the era has come to a close.

It's often said in Houston media circles that if you had a Mount Rushmore for Houston TV news their would be three faces - Dave Ward, Steve Smith of KHOU 11 and Ron Stone of KPRC 2. Ward even brought up Stone in his television goodbye remarks saying he was one of the greatest in Houston TV history (READ MORE: Dave Ward's relationship with Ron Stone and Steve Smith, plus how Dave was all about Luv Ya Blue and the Oilers).

After the news, the big names of KTRK headed over to Willie G's on Post Oak Blvd in Uptown to a private party thrown by CNBC Billion Dollar Buyer star and CEO of Landry's Inc., Tilman Fertitta.

KTRK past greats like Shara Fryer, Jan Carson, Tim Melton were also in attendance. I also saw Houston sports legends like Astros Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell and Oilers Hall of Fame defensive end Elvin Bethea.

Now us Dave Ward fans will have to stay tuned to see what's next for the anchor. Since he has the Crime Stoppers of Houston headquarters named after him, I'm sure that organization will be in his future.

"I just can't tell you how much I appreciate your friendship, your loyalty over all these years," Ward told the crowd at city hall in his baritone voice. "This is the city I love and I love you all."

Houston TV and sports legends come together to celebrate Bob Allen

Friends reunite at Bob Allen's memorial service

When an icon like Bob Allen passes away, his memorial service is the equivalent of a Houston media and sports hall of fame ceremony.

I've heard names like sports legends Dan Pastorini, Elvin Bethea, Nolan Ryan, Don Sanders, Jose Cruz and Enos Cabell were in attendance. There were also big names in Houston television as you will see below.

David Barron wrote that Tim Melton gave a great tribute and got a laugh when he said, "If you worked with Bob, you knew he was the best-looking one, the most charming one, he was the funny one, but he also was the short one."

Fmr. KTRK sports reporter Bruce Gietzen retires from TV

Former KTRK abc13 sports reporter and Houston Rockets broadcaster Bruce Gietzen to leave TV news and remain in Waco


After 33 years in the TV biz, Bruce Gietzen is leaving TV screens.

For the last 12, Gietzen has been anchoring the news from behind the desk of KXXV News Channel 25 Waco, Temple and Killeen. Today marks his last day at that gig. Starting at the end of the month, Gietzen will become the Director of Communications for the Waco Independent School District.

"Now [I] will have a schedule that mirrors my wife's," Gietzen told mikemcguff.com. "She's a terrific teacher who changes lives every year, and that's so much more important than doing TV. Education has become a passion of mine and I'm excited to take on a new challenge."

Houstonians will know Gietzen from his days as the sports reporter for KTRK abc13 and as a member of the Houston Rockets and Astros broadcast team.

I got Gietzen to tell me about some of his favorite Houston sports stories he got to cover.

On his time at KTRK:

"Our sports department at KTRK in the eighties was a great group - Bob Allen and Tim Melton, two great guys, and myself, and our sports producer was Dave Strickland, who years later was the News Director of what was one of the top news operations in the country. With Marvin [Zindler] and Dave Ward and Ed Brandon, KTRK was a real powerhouse.

They were one of the first stations in the country to go to an hour newscast at 6 p.m. and it had two sportscasts. That second one came on about 6:40 and that's why I got hired at Channel 13 - they wanted "people stories" in that second block, not typical highlights and scores, and Bob came up with the idea to call it "Time Out with Bruce Gietzen" and I had a blast -- and pretty much free reign doing those stories.

Mike Tyson was just a few months into his professional boxing career and had won his first 11 or 12 fights all by knockout in the first round. He came to Houston as part of the Budweiser boxing series and was fighting a guy named Eddie Mitchell. Tyson was up and coming, and I went to do a story on this kid who was the talk of the boxing world, getting video of a workout a couple days before the fight.

We shot him sparring with someone, jumping rope, and doing one armed push ups...then did an interview.

One question I asked him was, 'Did you always want to be a fighter? You look more like a football player than a boxer.'

He answered in that high pitched voice, 'Yea? You look like you eat too much.'

I told him he was right.

A few minutes later we were packing up and I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and Tyson sincerely said, 'Jimmy told me my comment was uncalled for and I needed to apologize to you. I'm sorry I said you look like you eat too much.' (Jimmy was his manager, the legendary Jimmy Clayton.)

Of course I replied, 'No problem Mike. We're good.'

'You sure,' he asked.

'Yes, absolutely.'

He then shook my hand and said thank you for coming out and doing the story.

What was I going to do? Get mad at him? I don't think so.

Tyson knocked the guy out a couple nights later 22 seconds into the first round.

He and I can share that special interview moment!"


On his time with the Houston Rockets broadcast team:

"I left [KTRK] in '88 to be part of the broadcast team for the Astros and worked with Milo [Hamilton], [Larry] Dierker and Bill Brown. Another really good group of guys, and Milo was an old school baseball encyclopedia. I learned a lot from him about preparation and timing.

The job doing Rockets studio work came about almost by accident. The Rockets were on the road in December in Detroit and the TV play by play guy was either Ron Franklin or Bill Worrell at that time ('89 or '90). They had a sore throat and laryngitis so Channel 20 called me and asked if I could be on standby to fly to Michigan to help with the broadcast if they couldn't go the entire game. Then Franklin said he could do the game, but we decided to send it back to the Houston studio for the half-time and post-game to save his voice. We did all that on less than 24 hours notice and had to scramble to get some video and stories put together since that was before the internet and all the digital revolution.

We did two of those studio shows on that road trip and the GM at Channel 20 liked them, so that's how those got started. At that time I think we were the second team in the NBA to do the studio wrap around shows besides either Sacramento or the Knicks. We had a lean and mean staff, but put together good, creative broadcasts, and I know the league showed tapes of our telecasts to other clubs to utilize that same format incorporating studio shows.

They evolved into pre-game, half-time and post-game, and we got a stable of ex-players to rotate joining me in the studio as the guest/analyst. It was Elvin Hayes, Purvis Short, Mike Woodson and Robert Reid came in some, so did Mike Newlin and John Lucas.

Their gifts for working were things like a pair of cowboys boots or a gift certificate for dinner or gasoline. After Kenny Smith retired, his agent called us one day and said Smith would like to get in that rotation and we said 'sure!' Then the agent said he'd do it for $5,000 a game and we had to say no, it wasn't in the budget, and told him what the other guys got.

A few days later the agent called again and said 'okay, he'll do it for $2,000 a game.' Kenny didn't get on our shows. Every time I see him now with Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley, I think about that, and he may be getting that fee now!

Those were fun teams to cover, a diverse group of personalities. I remember in '94 we had to come from behind to beat the Knicks for the title. The format then was three middle games in a row in NY, and the feeling was the league offices so wanted New York to win the title. It was a hard fought defensive series and no team scored 100 points and we heard a lot of griping from New Yorkers.

We tried to do a mixture of hard core sports and fun things in those studio shows, to appeal to a wider audience. One year I challenged Elvin Hayes to a free throw contest, with no expectations. I beat him (Calvin Murphy said that was no big feat) and it became an annual story, and I'm not sure Elvin ever got over that embarrassment."



On his time in Waco TV:

"I got out of broadcasting in '96 and worked in Atlanta, then Washington DC in sports Marketing, then came back to Dallas. In 2003 I got back in as a news anchor in Waco, and that wasn't as fun as covering sports, but it was still good. There's a lot of news here for a market this size - big stories like the West fertilizer explosion, the two shootings at Ft. Hood, the Twin Peaks biker shootout, and of course Baylor's new stadium and athletic program.

Waco has a lot of positive things going on. Walking into McLane Stadium crossing the Brazos is one of the great college football experiences in the country, and of course you should do that right after having an infamous "gut pak" at Vitek's BBQ nearby.

The Texas Sports Hall of Fame is right on the river, as is the Texas Ranger Museum, and the Baylor Campus. We also have our first National Park, the Wooly Mammoth Site, which is fantastic."
