Haley Hernandez is author of School Makes You Super

Haley Hernandez

Haley Hernandez is the KPRC 2 health reporter, but she can add a new title to her resume...author of School Makes You Super!

The mother of two boys was inspired to write her upcoming book for her son. It is published by Greenleaf Book Group Press and is geared toward 3- to 5-year-olds.

According to its description, School Makes You Super is meant to prepare and excite young heroes about going to school. With a wonderful message that hopes to inspire and empower new students, this book is a source of encouragement and positivity for kids beginning their schooling journey. It illustrates the potential that awaits them in this big life transition.

Hernandez was kind enough to answer some of my questions about her new book, which will be released on January 13, 2026. But on Amazon, you can order it now.

Mike McGuff:  Tell us about "School Makes You Super" and what was the inspiration behind writing it?

Haley Hernandez:  I wrote this book for my son. He struggles with transitions, and when he was first heading off to school, it was a little bit difficult to convince him why it was so important to go. There's lots of books out there that explain how to go to school for the first time: you pack a lunch, you ride a bus, and you meet new friends. But I couldn't find something on why they needed to go and discover skills that they wouldn't otherwise learn without an education. So, I decided to create my own book!

MM: As a medical reporter, you have to translate complex science into 'plain English.' Do you find that writing for children requires a similar type of translation or simplification?

HH: Yes, I'd say one of my strongest skills is explaining complicated subjects in ways that are easy to understand, and it's very similar when trying to explain to kids why something is important. A lot of things that seem matter-of-fact to adults (like why you go to school) are foreign concepts to a kid. We underestimate how overwhelming that transition is; they have to leave their guardians, their safe spac,e and stay somewhere for longer than many of them have ever had to stay before. There can be new sounds, smells, routines, and strangers. We often forget to explain the "why" when emphasizing the importance of going to school. The truth is, their superpowers have yet to be discovered and it's going to take years of schooling to find out what those are, and that's a journey that begins as a child and have to chart on your own.

MM: In TV, you’re always thinking about the 'visuals' for a segment. How did that influence how you collaborated with your book's illustrator?

HH: The illustrations were some of the first things I was dreaming up when I wrote the book. I was thinking about how my son loved building with Magnatiles. I thought, I wish there was a book that could show a little boy building with toys and how that manifests his future into being an architect. Then that led me to thinking about how playing doctor might mean a child has a true skill to save lives one day, and the ideas just kept coming from there, thinking about all these natural skills we are born with that really get fine-tuned with an education. I worked closely with the illustrator on my vision for every single page and Tammie Lyon really did something extraordinary in bringing my book to life. I'm thrilled with how they turned out!

MM: In the news, you can’t make things up. Was it liberating or challenging to suddenly have the freedom to write a fictional story?

HH: Yes, the book definitely shows my playful side. You'll be able to see how I talk to my kids! But in some ways it was still kind of similar to reporting, right, because I had this factual objective of wanting kids to be inspired to go to school but I had to write it a language they can understand.

MM: Reporting on health can be heavy, especially in a major city. Does writing children's stories serve as a form of 'self-care' or emotional processing for you?

HH: I never thought of it that way, but you're right that it's been one of the happiest times of my life getting to have this side hobby of working with the publisher and illustrator to write for children. Now that I think about it, yes, working in news can bring a heaviness to it and getting to go home and talk about superheroes did bring me a lot of joy. I guess for that, I'm thankful to get my book out into the world for many reasons.

School Makes You Super is available via Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

I will have to add the new book to my Texas TV, radio and media holiday gifts guide.

Texas TV, radio and media gifts 2025

Runaway Radio on DVD

The holidays are almost upon us, so what are some quick gifts you can buy on Amazon related to Texas TV, radio, or media in general?

Now, this idea didn't occur to me just because my 101 KLOL documentary "Runaway Radio" is now on DVD and would make a perfect Christmas gift. It is available on Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Barnes & Noble websites.

No, I thought about the Texas television anchors, reporters, meteorologists, and other journalists who have worked hard on a labor of love like your favorite lowly Texas media blogger did with his 14 year in the making film.

This list is drawn from books I have received releases for over the years, with a few bonus titles from before my blog existed. To illustrate how difficult it is to be an author, some of the books I have featured over the years are no longer available to make this list!

Here are some Texas media gift options from Houston to Dallas, Austin, and El Paso, plus surrounding areas in the Lone Star State!

Dominique Sachse returns to KPRC on "Houston Life"

Dominique Sachse, appeared on "Houston Life" yesterday which the lifestyle show billed as her first television interview since leaving the KPRC 2 anchor desk.

Host Courtney Zavala called Sachse, "KPRC 2 Royalty," which based on the amount of questions I receive concerning the former Houston TV anchor, is a good description.

Sachse returned to channel 2 to discuss her new book, "Life Makeover: Embrace the Bold, Beautiful, and Blessed You" which comes out today.

On the show, Sachse talks about her recent divorce, takes viewer questions, answers if she wears wigs, discusses dealing with online trolls who have "keyboard courage" and much more.

Dayna Steele's "101 Ways to Rock Running for Office"

Dayna Steele and Scott Schroder became an unlikely duo when Steele ran for Congress in 2018 and Scott was hired as her “body man” - someone on a campaign who stays close to the candidate at all times and does everything from advising to driving to carrying her purse.

The two barnstormed across nine counties in a large pickup truck wrapped in Dayna’s image and the U.S. Constitution.

Now, the political duo have teamed back up to write about the experience in "101 Ways to Rock Running for Office."

1. Mike McGuff: How much do you feel one person can make a difference in their community - even if they are not running for office?

Dayna Steele: It makes all the difference in the world. We all have a network, a community around us - family, friends, school, work, hobbies, sports, entertainment, religious affiliation, the list goes on. When you run for office or volunteer on a campaign or just vote, you set an example for others to do the same. There are millions of "just one person" examples where that person started a ripple effect and changed the world. Nelson Mandela was just one person.

2.  Is politics as rough as we hear it is?

DS: Yes. It is partisan and it is time-consuming. But, you will also learn so much about teamwork and listening. You will meet so many new people. And, you will learn about history and the future. I think the more you get involved, the more you see the need and the work it takes to make change.

3. What made you want to run for office?

DS: I always say "the more you do to help someone else succeed, the more you will succeed." I didn't see that happening in Southeast Texas. And, no one was going to run against the incumbent for the second election in a row. Even though I knew there was a good chance I would not win, I knew someone had to step up and do it. Democracy requires participation.

4.  What did you learn from the experience?

DS: That politics is not my cup of tea but I will continue to vote, stay involved, and stay loud. When we sit back and do nothing, nothing good will ever happen.

5 Anything else you want to add?

DS: My campaign slogan was Healthcare + Education = Jobs. When we all do everything we can to make sure everyone in our country is healthy and educated, we will soar.

Tom Abrahams' new book is about a pandemic

Fiction is unfortunately becoming reality for author Tom Abrahams with his latest novel Unprepared.

If you have been reading this blog in the last decade, then you have seen posts about the abc13 KTRK weekend anchor and his other gig, best selling author of more than two dozen novels in genres including dystopian, sci-fi techno-thriller, post-apocalyptic and political thrillers.

Unprepared is about:

A mutating plague is spreading. It's killing two of every three people on Earth. And Mike Crenshaw is totally unprepared. From the world of The Traveler Series comes a new cast of characters, new obstacles, and the same devastating, world-altering virus which plunges society into the depth of a dystopian hell. UNPREPARED begins in the hours before The Scourge takes hold. As if ripped from today's headlines, governments react too slowly and the disease spreads too fast. Quarantines don't work. Infrastructure fails. People die. Follow Mike and his friends as they try to survive this new landscape and find out how the world in which The Traveler Series was set came into being. It's a thrill ride that will keep you up at night with the lights on and the doors locked.

Abrahams is now ready to move on from the fictional world of pandemics since we are living the reality now with the coronavirus.

"My next project is book three in a dystopian fantasy series. It’s not related to pandemics," Abrahams told Houstonia. I’m glad I’m done writing pandemics for a while. I’ve written 12 books about pandemics—eight Traveler books, three Scourge books, and one book in the alt-apocalypse series. The fun part of writing fiction is the escape of it. When life too closely mirrors that escape, it’s no longer fun. And some part of each of those books is no longer fiction."

The channel 13 television news anchor and novelist told the magazine that he has heard from readers who were prepared for COVID-19 thanks to his writing.

Here is my unsolicited pitch for Abrahams next book...scientists create a COVID-19 vaccine!

Dayna Steele revisits 'Rock to the Top' with Sammy Hagar

Dayna Steele is back with new edition of first book Rock to the Top - It Now Goes to Eleven: What you can learn about success from the world's greatest rock stars! with added 11th chapter and an afterword by Sammy Hagar

Dayna Steele has been a legendary 101 KLOL DJ, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, congressional candidate but now she is putting her author hat back on.

The 11th-anniversary edition of the original Rock to the Top - It Now Goes to Eleven: What you can learn about success from the world's greatest rock stars! with an added 11th chapter and an afterword by rocker Sammy Hagar is now available.

It takes more than talent to get to the top of the charts. Be a rock star in any business with these eleven tips from the world's greatest rock stars. Rock star success speaker Dayna Steele educates, motivates, and rocks you with The Rock Star Principles of Success and this 11th anniversary, updated version of her first book. Improved customer service, sales growth, focused leadership, strong teamwork, innovating for the future, recognizing trends - all learned from the greatest rock stars in the world. With her true stories and photos, this rock radio Hall of Famer and creator of Your Daily Success Tip takes the reader on a wild, fun, and thought-provoking rock and business journey from backstage all the way to becoming a rock star in your own life and business!

Steele even made time to sit down with me for my upcoming 101 KLOL documentary!

I got the scoop from Steele on the updated book and how it now goes to 11!

Mike McGuff: After a decade, what made you want to go back and revisit this book? I assume over the years, you have more advice to share?

Dayna Steele: One of my favorite business books of all time is How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. I went back and re-read it several years ago and was pleasantly surprised by how much of it is still relevant to building a successful business and network. Yes, there are some parts of the book that seems a bit old-fashioned and a couple of things are totally outdated – but for the most part – it is classic business advice that never goes out of style.

That is what I hope you find here with this anniversary edition of my first book. I have tried not to change much of it at all, just a few tweaks here and there to correct and update some things. Otherwise, it is the book I wrote eleven years ago with an additional chapter from me and with closing advice from rocker and very successful entrepreneur Sammy Hagar.

MM: Is there any knowledge you will share in the book you learned after running for Congress?

DS: The book is updated but the advice remains the same - that's the cool thing about classic business advice. I did add an 11th chapter, one on Communications and best practices for communicating with others - it needs to always be on their terms, not yours. And, there was a lot of that over an almost two-year run. I am working on a book about the run. It will be a guide to help others step up and lead.

MM: In the first edition Gene Simmons wrote the forward, now you have Sammy Hagar? How long have you known the Red Rocker?

DS: I thought it would be fun to change it up a bit. Sammy had written something for me some time ago, mainly focused on how important your network is to success. Who you know and who they know is a big part of the equation of success. I've known Sammy since the 1983 Texxas Jam. Pace Concerts sent me out to do interviews on the road with Sammy prior to the Texxas Jam to promote ticket sales. Sammy's manager, Ed Leffler, became one of my best friends and a tremendous mentor. Much of what I learned about business, networking, negotiation, promotion, and more came from spending time on the road, year after year, with Ed. He passed away in 1993.

MM: Anything else you want to add?

DS: I will always appreciated what ABC News said about the first book: "Ridiculously sane advice in an ever-challenging world."

Tom Abrahams in Houston Noir

Weekend anchor and author Tom Abrahams, the longtime Houston journalist is also a hybrid author (traditionally and self-published) who writes post-apocalyptic thrillers, action adventure, and political conspiracies!

Akashic Books is publishing Abrahams and a bunch of other such as Stephanie Jaye Evans, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, Reyes Ramirez, Larry Wattshas, Gwendolyn Zepeda, Icess Fernandez Rojas, Sehba Sarwar and Leslie Contreras Schwartz in Houston Noir.

As you can tell by the title, the fourth-largest city in the US is long overdue to enter the Noir Series arena. The series edited by Gwendolyn Zepeda, which launched in 2004 with Brooklyn Noir, is set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the respective city.

Here is a description:

There’s precious little comfort to be found in any of these Houston neighborhoods, most of which are set light-years away from the city’s notoriously cushy new-money culture.

No less than four stories—Tom Abrahams’s “Tolerance,” Pia Pico’s “The Falls of Westpark,” Sehba Sarwar’s “Railway Track,” and Icess Fernandez Rojas’ “Happy Hunting,” whose combination of creeps and surprises makes it the volume’s low-life high point—feature serial killings of young women. The naĂŻve young hero of Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton’s “Where the Ends Meet” and the almost equally naĂŻve cop hero of Leslie Contreras Schwartz’s “City of Girls” find that the girls in question have merely been sexually enslaved, not murdered, and Robert Boswell’s alarmingly kicky “The Use of Landscape” dials back the violence by focusing it on only a single woman. The traffic in drugs creates intimate tragedies in Wanjiku Wa Ngugi’s “Miles’s Blues” and Stephanie Jaye Evans’ “Jamie’s Mother.” Even when professional criminals aren’t involved, the squalor associated with them infects the one-off murders of Larry Watts’ “A Dark Universe” and Adrienne Perry’s “One in the Family” and the domestic dramas of Sarah Cortez’s prose poem, “Photo Album,” and Anton DiSclafani’s “Tangled.” So it’s something of a relief to turn to Reyes Ramirez’s “Xitlali Zaragoza, Curandera,” which involves nothing more sinister than the curse professionally unmasked and lifted by a dedicated investigator of hauntings.

Houston comes across as a haven of multiculturalism—though, as in all the 90-plus volumes of Akashic’s 15-year-old series, the vision of the city that emerges isn’t likely to jump-start tourism for any but the most ghoulishly inclined.

Lisa Trapani Shumate's 'Always and Never: 20 Truths for a Happy Heart'

Lisa Trapani Shumate becomes an author to help young adults

If you've worked in Houston media for any amount of time, you probably know Associate Vice President at the University of Houston, General Manager, Houston Public Media, Lisa Trapani Shumate.

From her introduction to Houstonians as host of Good Morning Houston with Don Nelson, to the KTRK abc13 marketing department, to her work with Belo (now TEGNA) to leading Houston Public Media, Shumate has touched a lot of lives for the better.

I should know, I got to work with her a few times at channel 13 on various projects.

Now Shumate is expanding her belief in mentoring into book form. “Always and Never: 20 Truths for a Happy Heart,” a life guide that promises to transform young adults’ futures, will be published in April by LucidBooks, just in time for graduation season.

The short book is a “mentor in print,” according to the author, providing the encouragement, inspiration and optimism needed by any age group, but especially by young people who are entering into adult life and business. Young adults need more than a job, they require strength and resilience to for the ups and downs of the working life, as well as a clear understanding of their personal goals in life. The author’s truths are simple yet timeless concepts that provide a strong foundation for realizing life’s goals.

Each of her 20 Truths (Always) has a converse (Never). For example: Truth 2: “Always listen before speaking; Never dominate the conversation” and Truth 20: “Always be the leader of your life; Never minimize your potential or capacity to lead.”

“The next 10 years of graduates’ lives will be as formative as the first 10 with first jobs, first loves and living on their own for the first time,” says Shumate. “The messages of hope and self-help of “Always and Never” are especially important these days when our country is experiencing growing rates of opioid addiction and suicide among youth,” she adds. She emphasizes that the most important relationship is the one with oneself."

Here is an interview with Shumate that explains more:

Q) What inspired you to write Always and Never 20 Truths for a Happy Heart and Always and Never: 20 Truths for a Happy Heart: The Companion Journal?

A) I’m the mother of two grown children and as they were headed into their twenties I wanted to write some advice to them that would guide them for the rest of their lives. You spend so many years getting your kids to that point, time flies by, and you wonder, are they ready? How can I send them off into the world with encouragement, inspiration and the fundamental wisdom you hope you taught them
over the years, but many often forget?

Q) You mention in the introduction to Always and Never 20 Truths for a Happy Heart that, on a larger scale, are guardrails for the ideals and standards we hold dear. How did you arrive at the 20 Truths included in the book?

A) I started with a blank journal and wrote words that matter, words that everyone can relate to, words that are central to the quality of life: trust, time, faith, love, forgiveness, gratitude. I came up with about 23 and edited it down to 20.

Q) How do they act as guardrails?

A) The guardrails occur when you place Always and Never around each word. For the word trust I wrote: Always do as you say will do, Never undermine trust others place in you by not keeping your word. We know that trust is more important than any degree, skill or anything else you think you have to offer. Nothing can replace being reliable. Trust is what holds together every important relationship whether at home, work or community.

Q) Who can benefit the most from the books?

A) The books were written with young adults in mind. However, given what we see happening everyday it seems that people of all ages abandon guardrails that can protect what matters most: integrity, family, peace of mind. When this happens, often lives are shattered. As a society we suffer a collective disillusionment and disappointment.

Q) How did your background influence the writing of both books?

A) Everything in my background influenced the book and journal. My Catholic School upbringing, loving parents who set down very clear rules, a career in media that began by learning and sharing everyday as a reporter and roles in management that tested my skills as a leader. Personally, being married for 36 years, a parent for nearly 35 years, aunt, godmother, and now grandmother taught me how important it is for parents to encourage children to try new things, set a good example, and be interested in their interests. Now working at the University of Houston I see that students need and want mentors, to be empowered, and to know that it’s not only safe but expected that they will make mistakes.

Q) You mentioned that you learned the concepts in the book the hard way. How would your book have helped you when you started out?

A) I wish I knew from the beginning how much control I have over the way I think. Truth #1 is powerful when you really put it to the test. If you want to change your life, you must change the way you think. Too many years and tears were spent on what others thought about me, told me and what I told myself. I credit my mother and my husband for consistently reinforcing the notion that the only limits in life are the ones we put on ourselves. That resilience and perseverance will rule the day.

Q) We’re living in a time when the country is very polarized. Do your feel that your book has the potential to decrease the polarization level? If so, how?

A) I feel the book can have an impact on our country’s current polarization by shifting the focus inward to ourselves, our families and our community. As Margie Warrell so elegantly said in the Foreword, “How do we navigate our lives during these times?…by returning to these universal and timeless principles that transcend our differences and pull us through the fear and furor—back toward the truth of our hearts and the sacredness of our shared humanity.”

Q) You have said that you are formally and informally a mentor. How did you become a mentor?

A) I believe people seek out their mentors and that mentoring means everything from giving advice to being the best role model you can be. My role as mentor began in my early thirties when interns were assigned to work with the programming department at KTRK-TV in Houston. I enjoyed working with them and seeing the business through their eyes. It has continued over the years as I joined the management ranks. Friends, colleagues, the University of Houston and professional organizations have asked me to advise students or professionals trying to get to the next level.

Q) Why is being a mentor important to you?

A) I owe my start in media to a woman named Mickey Wellman who hired me at WWL-TV in New Orleans, mentored me by giving me new opportunities to learn and by encouraging me when I faced challenges. She made the time to listen, teach and promote me to other station leaders. I will never forget her impact on my career and I will always find a way to say yes to someone who needs advice,
encouragement or guidance that helps them take another step toward realizing their dream.

Q) What were the issues brought to you by those you mentored? What was your overall advice?

A) Most of the issues brought to me revolve around three of the Truths--#1, #6 #18. #1—the mentee doesn’t understand how much is in their control just by the way they think about their future. They feel powerless. #6—the mentee is reacting to the world and not listening to their own voice and placing a high enough value on what they have to offer. They feel undervalued or are undervaluing themselves. #--there is some element of waiting to be discovered, too much emphasis on destination and not enough on the plan. They feel overwhelmed. My advice centers on the questions and activities in The Companion Journal. It begins with deep self-reflection on habits, greater self-awareness of negative patterns and pointing out options within control. The resulting smile and sense of relief after we talk it through tells me something clicked, a new mindset is taking shape and they’re no longer stuck.

Q) How will 20 Truths to a Happy Heart: The Companion Journal empowers readers who spend time self-reflecting and take up the challenge to respond honestly?

A) The Companion Journal has one goal—to enable readers to learn how to and practice being CEO of the way they think and feel about themselves. Through a series of exercises, self-reflection and taking the time to write down responses a new state of consciousness arises. With it comes more control over happiness. At the back of the Journal there is a guide for shared learning that offers the benefit of group discussion.

Q) Have you ever journaled? Do you currently journal in any manner? (If the answer is no, we can eliminate the question)

A) Journaling is how I’m writing the next book in the Always and Never series. Journaling helps me capture emotion and insights. I don’t record my daily routines or interactions. For me it’s about observations and words that catch my attention.

Q) What would you like readers to take away from the books?

A) I hope the Always and Never book series is an ongoing resource for inspiration and reassurance about what it means to be your best self. I hope the words guide readers to an empowered state that enables a quiet mind, peaceful spirit and happy heart.

Houston author's love advice leads to 'Steve Harvey' appearance

Former Dr. Phil producer Tera Stidum found her love through online dating and now wants to help you

Houston author Tera Stidum once again went national this week as she appeared this time on Steve Harvey's syndicated daytime talk show (weekdays at 3pm on FOX 26 KRIV).

The online dating expert's mission is to help singles get it right in their dating lives.

"My appearance on Steve was me helping two singles, a woman and a man, with dating profile overhauls," Stidum told mikemcguff.com. "Dating profiles are the 'resumes' of the online dating world and most people strike out when it comes to their profiles - bad pictures, terribly written profiles, which don’t share the essence of who they are, or what they are looking for! I helped these two people by giving them newly written profiles, and selected better pics for them as well."

How did Stidum become an expert? Through experience. The former talk show producer didn't have time to meet someone and tried online dating. It worked and she met her husband.

In effort to help her friends and others drop the fear of meeting dates through the Internet, Stidum opened a coaching and workshop business, She Dates Savvy, LLC.

Knowing lots of people in the television talk show biz, Stidum began being interviewed as an expert in places like TD Jakes, OWN’s The Book of John Gray, The Raw Word, the Houston Chronicle and radio.

Through teaching, Stidum shared her story of leaving a Dr. Phil producer job, breaking off a relationship and coming back home to Houston for a new beginning. Stidum's father always said write a book, so she took his advice with Smart Girls Don’t Date Dumb. Part autobiographical, part dating tips and advice, the book shares wisdom the now dating guru gained from her own mistakes.

"What I know for sure is we get in our own way when it comes to getting the goodness life and love has to offer us," Stidum told me. "If I can share my story as a way to help inspire others, they too can find love, it’s well worth it. There is a chapter in the book from my husband called, 'Kings and Kids,' where he gives ladies the skinny on men! A lot of women will never get the benefit of hearing the truth from a man who wants nothing from them, but this chapter does just that. Women eat it up and I’m HAPPY to share his wisdom with them."

If you want to learn about the best online dating sites, sending messages, weeding out romance scammers, crazies and freaks, as well as getting to the date, then check out Stidum's upcoming webinar The Smart Girl’s Guide to Digital Dating 2.0 being held March 3, 2019.

Mr. Ward, who first joined ABC’s KTRK-Channel 13 in 1966, today hosts “Dave Ward’s Houston,” a series on ABC13 that explores the people, places and events that make this city so special. Ward, known for being “the most trusted voice in Houston,” held the Guinness World Records title as the longest running local TV-news anchor at the same TV station in a major market.

Working with Jim McGrath, co-author of numerous high-profile memoirs, Ward shares the full depth of his notable experience. In fascinating detail, he:

  • Covers his legendary 60-year career as radio and TV newsman in Houston – dating back to before the JFK assassination
  • Takes readers on the news set and behind the scenes of America’s most successful local news team, including his personal history with Marvin Zindler
  • Chronicles the growth and development of the U.S. space program
  • Invites readers to experience life on the road with Houston Oilers during the “Luv Ya Blue” era

In addition to his news career, Ward played an instrumental role in establishing Houston Crime Stoppers, the city’s top non-profit dedicated to public safety. In 2017 the organization opened a three-story 28,000 square foot building named after the former ABC13 anchor. The facility, titled "Dave Ward Building, Crime Stoppers of Houston," serves as a central hub for Crime Stoppers operations, volunteers, staff, victims, law enforcement, media and community programming.

This long-awaited book, with a foreword by former President George H.W. Bush, captures the heart of Houston and the man who has told its stories, investigated its problems and presented news in a clear and unbiased way over 70 years of constant change.

“Dave Ward, as long as I can recall, has been one of the most trusted figures I have ever seen on television. You couldn’t find anyone who exuded more integrity and goodwill on a community than Dave has done for all those years in Houston. He really has been that trusted face and voice in that great city for so long — longer than anyone who has been behind an anchor desk. Good Evening, Friends helps you understand how and why." ~CBS Sports Anchor Jim Nantz

“What Dave Ward did was more than read news. He became like your next-door neighbor in your home. Every night, at 6 and 10, he was literally in your living room — there for everyone. With his ‘Good evening, friends,’ he was the person you simply came to trust. So when it came to what was happening in the city of Houston that was newsworthy, Dave Ward was there to tell you. Anyone can talk into a microphone, but few can do it in a way that makes you trust them. Dave had that gift, and he still does.”
~Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner

New book by Dr. Joseph Galati of 740 KTRH

Eating Yourself Sick: How To Stop Obesity, Fatty Liver, and Diabetes From Killing You and Your Family By Joseph Galati, M.D.

Joseph Galati, M.D., is a liver disease specialist with more than 25 years of experience treating patients with acute and chronic liver disease, as well as disorders of the digestive tract. His book, Eating Yourself Sick, educates readers on the dangers of our current grab-and-go meal culture, and its affects on our long term health and well being. This book, which is on shelves now, breaks down the health consequences of today's typical diet of high sugar and processed foods, providing the reader with tips on how they
can reverse the damage and take control of their own health.

What The Book Is About

• Identifies the cost of obesity to our health and healthcare system
• Breaks down how our diets directly relate to our risk for obesity, diabetes, fatty liver and cardiovascular disease
• Tips on how to reverse years of liver and gut damage by changing your diet
• Includes guidelines on how to be a better consumer, adding the right produce and other foods to your grocery cart
• Underscores the value of teaching children how to cook and feel comfortable in the kitchen as a precursor to lifetime health
and wellness

Eating Yourself Sick combines Dr. Galati's decades of medical experience, with stories of his upbringing in New York with an Italian
mother who loved to cook, and taught her children to do the same. It is his belief that the obesity epidemic, and the resulting health crisis it has sparked, can be directly linked to a breakdown in our familial culture. Families don't cook together anymore! It's lead to a society where we are looking for quick and easy meals, that are not nutritious and are instead packed with calories, sugar and other health hazards.

In Eating Yourself Sick, Dr. Galati lays out the problem, and gives a step-by-step guide for stopping and reversing America's obesity
epidemic.

The Deplorables' Guide to Fake News + TV News Grapevine blog is back!

The book that will finally kill fake news: The Deplorables' Guide to Fake News

Randy Tatano (aka The Grape) has lots of experience in news, from local TV to the national network level. Back in the day I used to go through his blog and link his headlines right here.

TV staffers loved it.

With his varied perspective, he was laying stuff out on the table no one else dared talk about.

Good news. After a blog hiatus, he's back writing on the TV News Grapevine blog!

Why has his blog been MIA for years?

Because this grizzled journalist started writing books. I've featured them over the years too. Mostly he is a fiction guy, but the last election really got him going. His latest...as scary as it is...is all non-fiction. Yep, he's tackling the fake news sensation.

You might call this Fifty Shades of Gray Pantsuits.

Nope, this isn't a racy novel. But it's filled with dirty tricks.

It's the playbook used by biased reporters to promote an agenda... or a certain political candidate.

Yes, fake news has become an epidemic. But there is a cure.

Being able to recognize it. Along with the media people who are more interested in creating a narrative than presenting the public with actual facts.

The Deplorables' Guide to Fake News reveals the tricks of the trade... which are basically dirty ones played on the public by a biased media.

Because fiction isn't just for novels anymore.

Randy Tatano is a 30 year veteran of the television news business, having worked as a reporter, anchor and network field producer. He writes political thrillers as Nick Harlow, and romantic comedies for HarperCollins writing as Nic Tatano. He is the co-author of Eyewitness Newsman with television news legend Al Primo and the author of Broadcast Journalism Street Smarts.

He is a native of Stamford, Connecticut and now lives on the Gulf Coast.

Fmr. Austin anchor Olga Campos releases 'It’s News to Me'

 photo oglacampos_640_zpsaozzbcwg.jpg

Former broadcast journalist Olga Campos Benz (KVUE) launches her new career as a contemporary novelist with her much-anticipated first book, It's News to Me. The modern fiction novel features a bold and beautiful Latina television news reporter whose life is endangered by criminals, enhanced by sensuous encounters, complicated by loved ones and spiked throughout with shots of tequila and irreverent humor!

Olga Campos Benz is one of the most honored anchor/reporters to grace the Texas airwaves, having spent more than 30 years covering the biggest news stories in Houston, Corpus Christi and Austin. While fictionalized, Campos Benz now brings this experience to the page in It’s News to Me, offering readers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the Texas newsroom.

"During my thirty years as a reporter/anchor, viewers always asked what it’s like to work at a TV station,” said Campos Benz. “‘It's News to Me’ answers that key question by providing an unfiltered look at the intense relationships that are always simmering in every newsroom in America. Readers will also savor the gritty details of the competitiveness, the sarcastic humor, and the never ending drive to break a big story!"

Life in television news is not as glamorous, exciting or entertaining as viewers might think. At least it’s not for anchor-reporter Marissa Cavelo who is tired of being typecast as a feature reporter.

There are only so many ribbon-cutting ceremonies a reporter can handle without going insane! Marissa is determined to break a
big exclusive story to prove she’s a serious broadcast journalist. She also hopes to grab the attention of a national talent scout who’s searching for the next network news anchor.

While out on yet another “fluff’ story, Marissa stumbles upon breaking news and the “live” coverage unexpectedly propels her career forward, but it also angers a violent criminal who has a longstanding vendetta against Marissa’s family. Her bumbling bosses and competitive colleagues don’t want her to succeed for their own selfish reasons, so in an attempt to stop her quick rise to fame, the
Executive Producer hands Marisa an impossible assignment - one she is guaranteed to fail.

Marissa tackles the tough assignment while maneuvering the crazy, often hilarious world of local television news at K-A-T-X in Austin,
Texas. As she digs up dirt on a bogus money-making operation, Marissa finds herself sexually drawn to her handsome partner/photographer. At the same time she is pulled further away from her twin sister who hates being in the expanding shadow of
her celebrity sibling.

It turns out Marissa’s twin sister is living a secret life that puts both women in danger leaving Marissa forced to choose between using her investigative reporting skills to either save her sister or expose her enemies with cameras rolling. Either way Marissa risks her shot at becoming a network anchor. Fortunately for the fans of this savvy Latina, her sarcastic humor and the perfect margarita are always free flowing in “It’s News to Me”!

In addition to her new career as a novelist, former broadcast journalist Olga Campos Benz also holds the role of Community Relations Director for businessman and honored philanthropist, Milton Verret, and his companies. She continues her connection and commitment to the Austin community by serving on several nonprofit boards including The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM), the Austin Film Festival, the Joe R and Teresa Lozano Long Center, and the Advisory Council of the University of Texas Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. In 2013, the Austin Business Journal named Olga one of the “Profiles in Power: Women of Influence”.

She was inducted into the City of Austin Commission for Women Hall of Fame in 2014.

Olga and her husband Kevin live in Austin are proud parents of 26 year old twin daughters, Corazon and Allegra.

Tom Abrahams releases SpaceMan and Red Line

Anchor/author Tom Abrahams has book 9 and 10 on the way with 11 in production

 photo redline_zpskep3wdwc.jpg

We haven't heard from Houston TV anchor/author Tom Abrahams since the beginning of the year, but that doesn't mean he hasn't been churning out pages for his literary career.

HOME, his bestselling book to date, was chosen for Amazon's brand new Prime Reading program. That means any Prime member can choose from a limited selection of rotating books and read them for FREE.

"I'm flattered to be among the launch authors for the new program," Abrahams told mikemcguff.com. "There aren't too many authors who were asked."

HOME takes place in a post-apocalyptic Texas and follows the adventures of a loner forced to rejoin a crippled society.

It will also in translation. Next Spring, publisher Luzifer Verlag will release it in German. It's also available in paperback and audiobook.

But that's not all for Abrahams.

His ninth and tenth novels come out this month and next.

The ninth, commissioned by Amazon, is a novel based on the work of USA Today best selling author Nicholas Sansbury Smith. It's called Red Line and follows the hunt for a missing Marine who was part of a failed chemical experiment.

The tenth is the first part of a new series. It's called SpaceMan and imagines what would happen on board the ISS if it lost power from a geomagnetic storm.

SpaceMan is already available for pre-order.

And if you don't think this is all enough, Abrahams is busy writing book number 11 right now!
