Veteran local television and news executive Andrea Parquet-Taylor has been named vice president and news director at CBS Television Stations’ local broadcast and digital properties in Los Angeles. The announcement was made today by Jay Howell, President and General Manager of KCBS-TV, KCAL-TV, CBSN Los Angeles and CBSLA.com.

Michael Garfield says Wes Hohenstein is outta here

None other than the High Tech Texan himself, Michael Garfield, wrote into the little old mikemcguff blog with some big news. What I posted here about Wes Hohenstein (former KPRC Channel 2 morning meteorologist) is now official says Garf:
Wes is a good friend of mine and golfing buddy so I have been privy to what he has been up to (or hasn't been up to) for the past several months. Despite all of the hub-bub going at at KPRC-TV with morning weather personnel Wes is not going back to his old stomping grounds. He has accepted a position at WNCN in Raleigh-Durham, NC, that will actually let him sleep in.
You can read more about what Wes Hohenstein has to say here.

So where is Byron Miranda going next?

UPDATE
NBC-17 hires new chief meteorologist from Houston:
WNCN-TV (NBC-17) has a new chief meteorologist to replace Janice Jones, who left the Raleigh television station in July.

Wes Hohenstein, who gives his age as "in my thirties," is scheduled to make his station debut Sept. 17, before and after the new "NBC Sunday Night Football."

Hohenstein joins the nightly news team for the 6, 7 and 11 p.m. broadcasts. Bill Reh will continue to do the morning weather.

Jack Williams leaves 88.7 KUHF & Houston

Houston Public Media News 88.7 news director and host, Jack Williams, leaves station

 photo JackWilliams_zpsjigrsjbc.jpg
Jack Williams

Houston Public Media/NPR fans will be sad to hear that longtime news director and afternoon host, Jack Williams, is saying goodbye to News 88.7 KUHF and Houston.

His wife landed a great job in Omaha, so the family is starting its Midwest chapter.

"I feel very fortunate to have spent nearly 18 years here in Houston," Williams told mikemcguff.com. "Professionally, I couldn't have asked for anything more. Personally, Houston is home now and hopefully I'll be back someday. For now though, it's off to another adventure."

Williams has been a fixture in Houston since 1999 when he hit the radio scene as an anchor/reporter at 740 KTRH. By 2000, he jumped across to the same position at KUHF. In 2008, he became the public station's news director.

His radio career kicked off in 1994 as a reporter and anchor at stations in the Rio Grande Valley's KURV and later at Austin's KVET.

Williams has been named the Houston Press Club’s “Radio Journalist of the Year” and has won a number of regional Edward R. Murrow and Texas AP broadcast awards for his reporting. He’s also the radio president of the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters board.

While Williams is taking off, another HPM staffer is moving up.

Here is the release:

Houston Public Media names Joshua Adams executive director of operations

HOUSTON – (June 13, 2016) – Houston Public Media has named Joshua Adams the executive director of operations, a newly formed executive position. Adams most recently served as director of operations and technology for the organization.

In his new role, Adams will oversee all technical operations; broadcast and online content for general news, arts and culture, and education; digital and creative services; and all other internal operations.

“Josh has played a significant role in positioning Houston Public Media for the future," said Lisa Trapani Shumate, associate vice president and general manager of Houston Public Media. "His experience in news, production, technology and digital media make him an ideal leader for Houston Public Media operations."

Adams, an Emmy award-winning producer, has more than 16 years in the broadcast media industry. Prior to joining Houston Public Media in 2012 as the executive producer for TV 8, Adams held leadership positions at KHOU-TV in Houston and WNCN-TV in Raleigh, NC.

“I look forward to serving Houston Public Media and the community in this expanded capacity,” said Adams. “Houston Public Media plays such a vital role in informing and enriching our community and I’m excited to be a part of this team.”

Charlotte Huffman to leave WFAA 8 Dallas

Charlotte Huffman, WFAA 8 Dallas investigative reporter, is leaving the station at the end of 2021.

RELATED
Kalee Dionne to leave WFAA Dallas

Here is what Huffman posted on Facebook:

"I want to let you know that I have decided to leave WFAA at the end of the year so that I can refocus my passion and my skills into a new adventure! I’m not quite ready to share what that is yet but I am very excited about this next chapter!

It’s been a heck of a ride, to say the least. My job as WFAA’s investigative reporter has taken me to some amazing places. I’ve had both the privilege and the responsibility to let loose a little more truth into the world by shining a light in areas that some prefer to be kept dark.

Along the way I’ve worked with incredible photographers and producers. I’ve reported some very exciting stories and also some very painful ones. I’ve interviewed countless victims, criminals, high powered officials and top politicians. Perhaps most importantly, I’ve interviewed average Americans just struggling to have their voices heard. Throughout this journey I’ve prided myself on asking the tough and uncomfortable questions. As a result I’ve learned so much about this crazy world we live in.

Thanks to my my agent, my husband, my co-workers and my news directors for their support every step of the way. Especially, thank you to the countless people who trusted me to tell their stories. Together we’ve changed laws and changed lives."

Huffman joined WFAA in 2015, replacing Byron Harris who retired.

Prior to arriving in DFW TV, Huffman worked for:
- CBS O&O KYW Philadelphia
- WNCN Raleigh, North Carolina
- KETK Tyler
- KDFX Wichita Falls

The Edward R. Murrow and EMMY award-winning reporter was born and raised in Oklahoma City and earned her degree from Southern Methodist University (SMU).

"What many people may not realize is that the seven or eight-minute-long story you see on TV may have taken seven or eight months to uncover," Huffman said on her WFAA bio. "WFAA stands behind me and empowers me to really get to the bottom of an issue, no matter how long it takes. There’s a passion for excellence here and we set the bar high for ourselves. I think that’s one reason why WFAA has always had a reputation for being an investigative powerhouse."

CBS Station innovation lab to be based at CBS 11 KTVT DFW

CBS Station innovation lab CBS 11 KTVT DFW

CBS Stations today announced plans to create a local news innovation lab that will be based at KTVT-TV and independent sister station KTXA-TV, the ViacomCBS-owned stations in Dallas-Fort Worth.

The lab will serve as the home of a curated team of CBS News and Stations employees including several new hires, who will be empowered to experiment with next-generation storytelling, such as data journalism, and test new products, workflows and production models for the future. The announcement was made by Wendy McMahon, President and Co-head, CBS News and Stations.

Award-winning local news executive Chad Cross will serve as a senior leader at the lab as Vice President, Content Development, CBS Stations. In this newly created role, Cross will report to CBS Stations President Adrienne Roark and work closely with colleagues both at CBS News and CBS Stations to facilitate storytelling across the entire organization. He will be responsible for working directly with CBS Stations’ local newsrooms across the country, collaborating with the existing news, investigative and special projects teams, while also building and leading a team of journalists who will support original, next-generation storytelling across CBS News and Stations’ platforms. The unit overseen by Cross will develop new and unique franchises that will investigate topical issues that connect with local and national audiences.

Veteran CBS Stations executive Andrea Parquet-Taylor will transition from her current role as vice president and news director at KCBS-TV and independent sister station KCAL-TV, the ViacomCBS-owned stations in Los Angeles, to Dallas-Fort Worth and lead the first initiative that will be developed at the lab.

As Vice President, CW and Independent Stations News Director, Parquet-Taylor will report to CBS Stations President Tom Canedo and be responsible for overseeing the launch and production of hybrid, local-to-national multiplatform newscasts for several of the Company’s CW, independent and MyNetwork TV-affiliated stations. The markets served will include New York (WLNY), Philadelphia (WPSG), Dallas-Fort Worth (KTXA), San Francisco (KBCW), Atlanta (WUPA), Boston (WSBK), Seattle (KSTW), Tampa (WTOG), Detroit (WKBD) and Miami (WBFS). These programs will include both hyper-local content that will be produced by multi-skilled journalists on the ground in each market, as well as content produced by team members at KTVT and the lab.

CBS Stations will be supporting Cross and Parquet-Taylor’s teams by hiring additional employees both in Dallas-Fort Worth and at local stations. Specific job description information will be released in the near future.

“Following up on the recent announcement of our plans to create from scratch the newsroom of the future for WWJ-TV in Detroit, we are excited to continue to aggressively pursue new and exciting concepts in the new year through the creation of our local news innovation lab,” McMahon said. “We are putting significant resources and investments behind this commitment to be on the leading edge of innovation, as we continue to reimagine how CBS Stations will serve our audiences across all of our markets and all of our CBS News and Stations platforms in the months and years to come.”

McMahon added: “Adrienne, Tom and Raquel Amparo (CBS Dallas-Fort Worth president and general manager) have done a terrific job of conceptualizing and bringing our innovation lab to life. And we are excited to both welcome Chad to our team and promote Andrea to serve more markets in a news leadership role.”

Cross is joining CBS Stations after having served as the news director at KXAN-TV, the NBC-affiliated station in Austin, since 2012. While at KXAN, Cross and his colleagues have established a nationally recognized investigative team that has received national Edward R. Murrow Awards, Walter Cronkite Awards, an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, an Investigative Reporters and Editors Award, the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award and National Headliners Awards.

“We are thrilled to have someone with Chad’s credentials joining us as we establish the foundation of our innovation lab,” Roark said. “Chad and our team of local journalists will serve an invaluable role for our stations. They will look beyond the short-term news agenda and dig deeper to investigate and bring to light stories that haven’t been told, and provide a voice to members of the communities we serve that are often overlooked. Chad’s unit will also leverage data and technology to find new ways to present solution-oriented reporting that affects change and drives impact.”

“I am excited to join CBS Stations and have this significant opportunity to help create premium investigative news reporting and synergy across the recently combined CBS News and Stations organization,” Cross said. “I feel fortunate to be pursuing my lifelong passion, which is a journey that began at what is now the ViacomCBS-owned station in Denver (KCNC-TV). I toured the station during a fourth-grade field trip and decided that day I was going to work in local news.”

Parquet-Taylor has been a member of the CBS Stations family since February 2017. Before assuming her current role as Vice President and News Director at KCBS and KCAL in December 2020, she spent almost four years at KTVT and KTXA. She initially served as the Dallas-Fort Worth duopoly’s Vice President and News Director and then was promoted to Vice President and Station Manager in June 2018.

Prior to joining CBS Stations, Parquet-Taylor served as the news director at WNCN-TV, the CBS affiliate in Raleigh-Durham; WXYZ-TV in Detroit; WRAL-TV and WRAZ-TV in Raleigh-Durham and WMAR-TV in Baltimore.

Parquet-Taylor will continue to serve as News Director at KCBS-KCAL until a successor has been hired.

“Andrea is one of the most accomplished and respected news directors at CBS Stations,” Canedo said. “Her many years of experience as a newsroom leader at stations across the country, her creative instincts and her collaborative spirit will undoubtedly serve her and all of her colleagues extremely well as she takes on her new responsibilities.”

“It’s an honor to continue my journey as a member of the CBS Stations family, by getting this opportunity to return to Dallas-Fort Worth and work on an everyday basis with colleagues in 10 different markets, to do something new and quite exciting,” said Parquet-Taylor. “It has been a pleasure to have spent the past 13 months with our team in Los Angeles. I am so proud of what we have accomplished, especially considering all the challenges we have faced during the pandemic. Before leaving Los Angeles, I plan to take my facemask off long enough for my colleagues and friends to see the smile that’s been on my face since the day I arrived, and feel the gratitude I have for all of them.”

Bug in mouth strikes former KPRC 2 staffer on live TV

UPDATED WITH QUOTE FROM WES HOHENSTEIN

Former KPRC 2 meteorologist Wes Hohenstein just made The Drudge Report and the UK's The Daily Mail. And it's for something that has happened to another Houston TV person too.

We all know that Fox 26 KRIV reporter Isiah Carey AKA The Insite is known as the bug in mouth reporter. Heck, he was just celebrated on Comedy Central's Tosh.O for it. But now Hohenstein, who left Houston in 2006, got a moth in his mouth while trying to deliver a weather report at his station NBC17 WNCN-TV Raleigh, North Carolina.

We know from watching Hohenstein on Houston TV that he is a consummate professional. So how did he handle it? He says he thought about swatting it away, but then decided that wouldn't be appropriate for television. So he just swallowed the moth and kept going. Even declined water, but eventually did give in when someone handed him some.

"What happened to me, could happen to anyone," Hohenstein told mikemcguff.com. "Being a victim of RMS (Random Moth Swallowings) is a serious thing, that's why I'm encouraging everyone to only talk with your mouth closed!"

The anchor joked with Wes that the good news was this will never get on YouTube. Wes just responded dryly, "You-what?" Well look on the bright side, at least it's probably extra protein for Wes and a whole lot of publicity.

Former KPRC met Wes Hohenstein on Twitter

When former Houston meteorologist Wes Hohenstein left KPRC it was big news on this blog. That's why I am now reporting that Hohenstein is on Twitter and appears to be doing well at NBC 17 WNCN in Raleigh, North Carolina. He has a weather blog too.

Houston Public Media Names Joshua Adams Station Manager

Houston Public Media is pleased to announce that Joshua Adams, the station’s former executive director of operations, has been named station manager.

In his new role, Adams will oversee the day-to-day operations of the area’s only nonprofit, community-owned media organization, strategically guiding its newsroom, programming, technology, facilities and broadcast operations. Lisa Trapani Shumate will continue to serve as associate vice president and general manager of Houston Public Media and executive director of Houston Public Media Foundation.

“Joshua is a respected leader in the public media system,” said Lisa Trapani Shumate. “His collaborative spirit, deep knowledge of broadcast technology, involvement in emergency communication services and commitment to our public service mission made it an easy decision for Houston Public Media to elevate him to station manager.”

Since joining Houston Public Media in 2012, Adams has positioned Houston Public Media for long-term success through significant technology and infrastructure investments, innovative regional and national newsroom collaborations and pioneering advances in datacasting technology to support primary responders. Under his leadership, the station has ushered in a new multiplatform mindset, become the greater Houston community’s primary Emergency Alert System activator and launched The Texas Newsroom – the first-ever collaborative newsroom between public radio stations and NPR.

“I’m excited to be a part of our future, furthering our service to the region through a powerful presence on-air, online, on-demand and in the community,” said Joshua Adams, new station manager at Houston Public Media.

Adams has served in several leadership capacities at Houston Public Media, including as executive producer, director of technology and operations and most recently as executive director of operations. He previously held positions at KHOU 11 (Belo/CBS) and WNCN (NBC).

Derrick Lewis apparently exits abc13 Houston

Derrick Lewis has apparently left his reporting role at abc13 Houston KTRK as his bio has been removed from the station's website and his abc13 branded social media has changed name or no longer exists.

Channel 13 viewers started notifying me over the last few days that Lewis' bio was gone.

Just last week, when his bio was still on the site, I asked "Where is Derrick Lewis?" Viewers had been asking me since Lewis hadn't apparently been on channel 13's newscasts since February.

Lewis joined abc13 Houston in 2022 from Black News Channel where he was a national correspondent out of Houston for the now shuttered network (now rebranded as theGrio).

Before BNC, Lewis worked as a:

- NBC 6 Miami WTVJ freelance reporter

- CBS 17 WNCN Raleigh, NC bureau reporter

- WKBN 27 First News Youngstown, Ohio reporter

He is a Temple University grad.
