Owen Conflenti helps raise $500,000 for Nora's Home facility

The Houston transplant community and its supporters were transported to a night at the races during the 2016 Nora's Home Kentucky Derby Gala on Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Royal Sonesta Houston Hotel. The Annual Gala honored The Boudwin Family and The Bono Family for the families' relentless efforts to spread awareness about organ donation and the needs of transplant patients. Master of Ceremonies, KPRC 2 News Anchor Owen Conflenti, welcomed more than 600 guests that helped to raise over $500,000 for Nora's Home facility and programs that provide care, education, and support for transplant patients and their families.

The evening began with a cocktail reception where guests placed their bets in the casino room or raced to the dancefloor for live music by the David Caceres Band. VIP guests were given photo booth opportunities with a live pony and a 12-foot horseshoe made of roses. Freddy Cruz from 104.1 KRBE-Houston kicked off the night's philanthropic efforts by opening bids for the big board auction items such as tickets to the Dr. Phil Show, a private Tootsies luncheon and an Astros suite.

Guests were corralled to the ball room by the traditional Kentucky Derby bugle call to begin dinner. Emcee Conflenti took the stage to offer guests a warm welcome and to introduce Nora's Home with a video highlighting the story of Nora Gaber and her parents' love for their daughter. Drs. Lillian and Osama Gaber were applauded by the audience for the conception of Nora's Home. Special guests from the Egyptian Consulate, Honorable Khaled Rady and his wife, Dr. Manal Affara, and The Syrian Consulate Ayman Midani and his wife, Gayda were recognized.

Nora's Home Executive Director Kayla Lehmann then proudly welcomed Chairs Brigitte and Bashar Kalai to the stage. The couple spoke on their involvement with Nora's Home and asked donors to join them in the final home stretch to reach the organization's capital campaign goal of $3.5 million dollars to double the existing lodging capacity for transplant patients. Bashar announced groundbreaking may take place this summer.

Honorees, The Bono Family and The Boudwin Family, were highlighted and thanked for their continuous support before emcee Conflenti welcomed Maureen Grace and her two year old son Jude who is a recent lung transplant patient to the stage. Maureen shared her touching story of the transplant experience and the impact Nora's Home had on them throughout their journey.

The evening concluded with guests dancing to live music on the dance floor and a live auction which included lavish items including a dazzling 1.25 carat diamond pendant, an all-inclusive Costa Rica fishing trip, a private Rockets birthday party and dove hunt trip in Argentina among several additional luxury experiences. The focus of the night drew attention to the needs of transplant patients and the proceeds benefitted the Adopt-A-Family fund which provides financial support for families who cannot afford to pay the minimal nightly fee.

Friday's Gala was supported by many individuals, community partners and generous underwriters, including Brigitte and Bashar Kalai, the C. James and Carol Walter Looke Family Fund, The JLH Foundation, Hern Family Limited Partnership, Dr. Sippi and Ajay Khurana, The Linda and Jerry Strickland Family Foundation, Pat and Ben Bono, Drs. Sandra Hurtad and Michael Braun, Drs. Lillian and A. Osama Gaber, Gayle and Tom Kennedy, Caroline and Eddie Kuntz, Northstar Logistics LLC, Ramming Family Partnership, Mrs. David M. Underwood, Biologic TX, Houston Methodist Hospital, Iberia Bank, J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center, Drs. Disha and Ashish Saharia, The Smither Family, Marian and John Zerr, and more.

KPRC 2 anchor Owen Conflenti suffering from mild case of Bell's palsy

If you've been wondering where KPRC 2 morning anchor Owen Conflenti has been:

KPRC (Channel 2) anchor Owen Conflenti said Thursday he is suffering from a mild case of Bell's palsy but hopes to return to work next week and plans to be on hand to help launch the station's new 4:30 a.m. newscast Aug. 24.

Conflenti has been off the air this week recovering from the illness, which affects a facial nerve, causing swelling and affecting the ability to control muscles on one side of the face. READ THE REST

Anthony Yanez KPRC return promo video

Anthony Yanez is on the verge of returning to KPRC 2 on 9-1-2021 (UPDATE: I am told by a station representative Yanez will not be on air that day), and the Houston station is already rolling out the promo welcome matt.

"The time has come to say goodbye. This weekend [was] my last at @nbcla," Yanez tweeted. "One final hike to the Hollywood sign. See you in September Houston."

When Yanzez left channel 2 and Houston for KNBC Los Angeles in 2015, the staff joked "the bromance" between Yanez and morning anchor Owen Conflenti was coming to an end.  Now it's returning as the promo shows.

Yanez and Conflenti have been compared to previous KPRC duos, anchor Ron Stone and Doug Johnson.

Owen Conflenti adds a boy to the family

The good news is that KPRC 2 morning anchor Owen Conflenti's wife, Odilia, had the baby, bad news is that today Tropical Storm Imelda formed in the Gulf of Mexico. I'll hand that last part over to the TV weather departments.

"Big congrats to KPRC2 Owen Conflenti and his family," posted KPRC medical reporter Haley Hernandez. "It's a BOY named Owen."

"KPRC 2 News Today at 10am" and 3pm news debut in September 2023

"KPRC 2 News Today at 10am" debuts Monday, September 11, 2023 as well as KPRC 2 News at 3pm.

I found out that "Today With Hoda & Jenna" will be moved to 11am where "KPRC 2 News Midday "followed by a repeat of "Entertainment Tonight" at 11:30am currently air.

UPDATE 8-30-2023
KPRC 2 is also adding a half-hour 3pm newscast starting 9-11-2023 replacing "Dr. Phil."  The above mentioned "Entertainment Tonight" rerun will air at 3:30pm now. The channel 2 Houston 3pm newscast will be anchored by Andy Cerota, Lisa Hernandez and meteorologist Justin Stapleton.

For those keeping score, this is one of those newscast additions I hinted about back in July.

Morning anchors Owen Conflenti and Sofia Ojeda will be behind the anchor desk, and the above video is of the AM duo rehearsing for the new newscast.

"The 10am will not be all news," Ojeda posted.  "There will be lighthearted stories and lots of moments KPRC2 Owen Conflenti and I will share with y’all on daily topics and what everyone is talking about."

Conflenti says in the above video that meteorologist Justin Stapleton will contribute his beer segment to the newscast.

This is an actual over-the-air TV newscast addition...not a new streaming show for KPRC 2+.

As for streaming, Conflenti and Ojeda are apparently handing their 7am KPRC2+ show over to medical reporter Haley Hernandez and consumer reporter Amy Davis.

Just last week, "KPRC2+ Now" at 9 debuted with Zach Lashway and Hernandez.

The streaming-only KPRC 2+ debuted in April of 2022.

KPRC 2 dumped its 4:30am newscast in January of 2023.

KPRC 2 anchor Owen Conflenti planks on live TV

I haven't talked about planking here, but I have a reason to now. KPRC 2 morning anchor Owen Conflenti said he was talked into planking live on TV Thursday morning! I'm sure there are those out there more educated in this area than I, but is Conflenti the first anchor to plank on a news desk on live TV?

I guess Local 2 Mornings is Houston's closest version to Good Day LA?

Owen Conflenti goes Wes Anderson

If you follow Owen Conflenti, then you know the longtime KPRC 2 morning anchor's creativity knows no bounds.

As a Wes Anderson fan, I enjoyed his latest project with Sofia Ojeda, which is an homage to the style of the native Houstonian film director.

Fun fact...Rushmore, was filmed at both my high school and my wife's high school.  Our school's were combined to be the public school protagonist Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) is forced to go to after he is kicked out of Rushmore (played by St. John's School).

KPRC 2 replaces 10am news with Drew Barrymore

KPRC 2 Houston will replace its new 10 a.m. newscast with "The Drew Barrymore Show" starting August 12, 2024, when the Olympics coverage ends.

"We are thrilled to bring The Drew Barrymore Show to our audience," said KPRC 2 VP/General Manager Phil Lane. "Drew's unique blend of optimism, humor, and heartfelt conversations aligns perfectly with our mission to provide uplifting and engaging content."

"KPRC 2 News Today at 10am" was launched in September 2023 along with a new 3pm newscast.

The 10am news crew of  Owen Conflenti, Sofia Ojeda, Justin Stapleton, and Justina Latimer will remain on the KPRC 2 morning news from 5am to 7am and offer reports throughout the day.

"The 10am will not be all news," Ojeda posted at the time of the 10am newscast launch.  "There will be lighthearted stories and lots of moments KPRC2 Owen Conflenti and I will share with y’all on daily topics and what everyone is talking about."

According to the show's website, "The Drew Barrymore Show" airs weekdays at 3 a.m. on CW39 Houston KIAH.

Fans of Barrymore might want to watch her play the Texas city name game and do the local DFW weather segment which I've featured before on this blog.

Yes, 7 KPRC babies are coming in 2019!

Channel 2 is leading the way in getting new viewers...they are literally delivering them!

Overall, most of my readers love the Houston TV pregnancy posts, but I get a few complaints.

However, let it be pointed out that at this moment, seven KPRC 2 anchor and/or reporters are expecting new additions to their families.

That is kinda wild.

So the question is, when will I have to add to this list?

We had the great Houston TV baby boom a few years ago, but this one probably tops it. And of course, in addition to channel 2, we have babies on the way at other stations too!

Congrats to all!

HOUSTON – July 19, 2021 – KPRC 2 is pleased to announce the return of Emmy Award-winning Meteorologist Anthony Yanez to its morning newscast KPRC 2 News Today, following more than six years at KNBC, part of the NBC Universal network in Los Angeles.

“I have always loved KPRC 2 and Houston,” says Yanez, a married father of five. “The people in this community are one of a kind, and I can’t wait to get home.”

Prior to his departure in 2015, Anthony Yanez served as part of the KPRC 2 Weather team for more than 11 years and was a popular member of the KPRC 2 News morning team, alongside morning anchor Owen Conflenti.

“The ‘bromance’ of Anthony Yanez & Owen Conflenti has become something of a legend in Houston morning TV,” said KPRC 2 Vice President/General Manager Jerry Martin. “We are excited to have Anthony back on KPRC 2 News Today, where he belongs!”

Houston viewers got their first taste of Yanez in the Summer of 2003, during KPRC 2’s team coverage of Hurricane Claudette; it was his first day on the air!

With over 25 years of broadcast news experience, Yanez found his passion in weather, and holds seals of approval with prominent weather organizations including the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the National Weather Association (NWA).

He was awarded the 2020 best weathercast by the Radio & Television News Association of Southern California.

Anthony came to KPRC 2 in 2003 from KRQE in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He returns to Texas with his wife Rebecca and their four Houston-born children. Their eldest child graduated from Lamar High School and Texas Tech and now lives in Washington, D.C. The Yanez family will be making the move with their two Houston-area adopted dogs named Harvey and Hurricane as well as their 4 cats.

Anthony’s first day at KPRC 2 will be September 1, 2021.

KPRC 2's Jennifer Reyna promoted to anchor

Photobucket

On Monday, KPRC 2 traffic anchor Jennifer Reyna debuted as a news co-anchor on the stations 4:30am newscast along with Owen Conflenti. That show has been solo anchored by Conflenti with meteorologist Anthony Yanez doing the weather since its debut.

The new team didn't waste anytime Monday talking about the new addition and just jumped into the newscast. It appears that traffic is a very small part of Reyna's duties during this show. My favorite part was when Conflenti brought a cardboard cutout of KPRC sports director Randy McIlvoy out during one of Yanez's weather breaks.

So what does this mean for usual morning anchor Lauren Freeman? KPRC viewers hit the station's Facebook page with that question.

"Lauren is still on every weekday from 5-7a," KPRC 2 Vice President/Creative Services Director Mike Guerrieri answered. "Jen's just joining the guys from 4:30-5a."

Reyna's full time anchor gig has happened just as I predicted on 9/15/2009. On that day I blogged that Reyna will follow the path of another former KPRC 2 traffic anchor. You might have heard of this person, it is main Channel 2 anchor Dominique Sachse. It's clear that KPRC management has been giving Reyna time to anchor (the most recent time was filling in for weekend morning anchor Courtney Zavala while she was on maternity leave). Now the bosses are giving Reyna time at anchoring finishing school every weekday morning and letting Conflenti's work rub off on her. As I have mentioned before, Reyna is too popular of a talent, not to promote her to the anchor desk.

The post I mentioned from 2009 was about the new (at the time) @RateReyna Twitter feed. That got me curious, what did the @RateReyna tweet say on the day of her 4:30am anchoring debut:

Dark pink anchor jacket. Eat your heart out Ron Burgundy! Rating: 9.3

Guess that means they liked her anchoring job. Then they can keep watching Reyna on the traffic beat through the morning.

Haley Hernandez is expecting

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 29, 2019
Haley Hernandez and Sophia Beausoleil have babies same day!

Now they are even talking about the whole "what's in the water" joke on KPRC newscasts. With all of the Meghan Markle and Prince Harry baby talk, KPRC 2 health reporter/fill-in anchor Haley Hernandez announced Monday morning that she is pregnant with her first child.

Haley Hernandez ties the knot!

"My husband and I are expecting ours in October," Hernandez posted on social media. "Lots of KPRC babies coming in 2019!!!"

No joke.

Hernandez said on air that viewers were asking if she was expecting, so she couldn't hide it anymore. Boy do I know that they notice. Many start asking me about their favorite anchor and if I know anything about potential baby news.

At first I thought consumer reporter/fill-in anchor Amy Davis was joking that anchor Owen Conflenti has a baby coming. He then said he was actually pregnant himself, but then they seemed to seriously say that Conflenti would be expecting a new arrival to his family in late September.

That means Hernandez and meteorologist Britta Merwin will both be gone in October on maternity leave. In early April, Merwin announced her third child was on the way.

And don't forget that KPRC anchor Lauren Freeman is pregnant with her 5th child.

To keep track of all the Houston TV pregnancies, I'm thinking about starting a separate website to track everything. Hey, if I'm nutty enough to sit here and blog about H-Town media, why not?

Hernandez joined channel 2 in 2014 from WCBD Charleston, South Carolina. Raised in Clear Lake attended the University of Oklahoma.

Daniella Guzman goes to mornings?

Daniella Guzman

Daniella Guzman is trading in her evening newscasts for early mornings — at least for this week.

Where is Candace Burns on KPRC 2?

Starting today, the KPRC 2 Houston evening anchor fills in for morning anchor Owen Conflenti.

UPDATE: KPRC viewers tell me that Conflenti returned with Guzman and morning co-anchor Sofía Ojeda was seen on Guzman's normal evening newscasts.  I don't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist here, but it all kinda makes me wonder if they are trying out different anchor pairs and watching the reaction.  If I'm wrong, I will just start watching New Jersey drone videos with my tinfoil hat on.

"Yes, I'm saying good morning," she posted in a Facebook video.  "Do you know how long it's been since I have had a cup of coffee on a set like this?  It’s almost 5:00 in the morning, and I’m filling in for the morning show, and so I'm off nights for this whole week."

Guzman's 5, 6, and 10 p.m. viewers will notice her absence during the week as she temporarily shifts to mornings, but these aren't exactly new hours for the seasoned anchor. Before returning to Houston night TV, Guzman was no stranger to morning shows, having anchored for the NBC-owned stations in Chicago and Los Angeles.

"I love morning shows! They’re a lot of fun," Guzman said with a smile.

While her evening audience will miss her for a week, Guzman is excited to join her KPRC 2 morning colleagues, including Sofia Ojeda at the AM newsdesk.

"A lot of people taking off, we're all helping each other out," she added.
