"It has been an incredible honor and privilege to serve the Houston community as a meteorologist for more than 30 years," Billingsley said in a statement. "I am forever grateful to the viewers who have trusted me to deliver the forecast and for the unwavering support they have shown throughout my career. I thank all of you Houston for your love."

“I'm going to take a break and see what it's like not to wear a suit five days a week!” Billingsley also told CultureMap's Ken Hoffman.

Billingsley, the longest-running TV meteorologist in Houston, has been on the airwaves for more than his nearly 30 years with Channel 2.

It all started on September 22, 1982, as the Washington and Lee University grad joined WDBJ 7 Roanoke, Virginia.

That was followed by WLOX 13 Biloxi, Mississippi, starting in 1987.

Houston called, and Billingsley hit the airwaves at abc13 KTRK on April 22, 1989, as a weekend meteorologist.

Throughout his remarkable career, Billingsley has received recognition from Texas Associated Press Broadcasters on seven occasions, been honored by The Houston Press Club, and earned the title of “Ultimate Weatherman” by the Houston Chronicle.

Beyond his work at the KPRC 2, Billingsley penned the book "Swabbed & Found" in 2017, chronicling his DNA journey to locate his biological family.

He triumphed over prostate cancer in 2018 after an eight-month battle.

Billingsley celebrated a personal milestone in 2012 when he married his longtime partner, Kevin Gilliard. Their joy was further amplified with the arrival of their son, Morgan.

Frank Billingsley joins Houston Public Media

Frank Billingsley will join Houston Public Media as an executive producer after stepping down as KPRC 2's chief meteorologist in June 2024.

"Frank Billingsley’s reputation as a Houston legend precedes him," said Houston Public Media Station Manager, Josh Adams in a release. "His experience and connection to our community align perfectly with Houston Public Media’s mission to inform and inspire. We are thrilled to welcome him to the team and look forward to the impact his presence will have."

In his new role, Billingsley will play a central part in the launch of a multi-platform talk show, Hello, Houston!, premiering in early 2025.

The daily program, airing on News 88.7 KUHF radio, podcast, and social media, will feature Billingsley alongside award-winning broadcaster Ernie Manouse and producer Celeste Schurman (no time was provided by HPM as to when the show will air). Former 97.9 The Box KBXX Madd Hatta Morning Show producer James Kovacik, AKA Jim Beazy, will also produce the show.

Together, the station says the new public radio team will spotlight vibrant stories, inspiring profiles, and thought-provoking discussions that celebrate Houston's diversity and culture.

"Of course, I'll still get to talk about the weather, but Celeste, Ernie and I will have fun and fascinating discussions about politics, arts, concerts, restaurants, clubs, people: everything that makes this city so great," Billingsley added. "We have a great team behind us and I'm really looking forward to the challenge!"

"Frank’s depth of experience and his dedication to storytelling will bring a fresh perspective to our content," said Laurie Ramirez, Executive Director of Content Operations for Houston Public Media. Houston’s longest-serving TV meteorologist, Billingsley, had a 42-year career, including nearly three decades with Channel 2. KPRC morning meteorologist Anthony Yanez has since stepped into the role of chief meteorologist.

Billingsley has earned multiple honors from the Associated Press, Houston Press Club, Houston Press Newspaper, and Dallas Press Club. He was also named a “Houston Treasure” in 2018 and a “Houston Legend” by Houston City Book in 2021. The Houston Chronicle named Billingsley the “Ultimate Weatherman.”

Beyond television, Billingsley wrote "Swabbed & Found," chronicling his journey to find his biological family.

KPRC 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley announces prostate cancer diagnoses to raise awareness for early detection

KPRC 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley announced on Tuesday's 6pm news that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

And his message is to get tested, because he had no symptoms. The idea to have a series of tests happened after a chance conversation with channel 2 anchor Dominique Sachse about nutrition and diet.

"She suggested going to her doctor, who ran a standard blood panel and discovered my PSA prostate cancer test that was off the charts," Billingsley said on the newscast. "So my summer has been one of letters: PSA, DRE, MRI, CAT, etc."

At just 57 years of age at the time of the test, Billingsley's prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test came in at a high 17.

His bone and CAT scan both came back negative.

"Hopefully this hasn't spread, with such a high PSA, it's not for sure, but it doesn't look like it has," he told the television audience.

Billingsley says that puts him at an intermediate risk.

The reason the long running Houston meteorologist went public with his diagnoses, was to raise awareness about the value of testing for the disease.

"The message is, like with any cancer, the sooner you know, the better the prognosis," Billinglsey added. "Prostate cancer is not an old man’s cancer, it’s a man’s cancer. Anyone over 40 should be tested during their regular checkups."

The station reported one in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. September is National Prostate Health Month.

Frank Billingsley celebrates 40 years on air

Frank Billingsley celebrated 40 years on television September 22, 2022!

"First day of Frank, back on September 22, 1982," Billingsley posted. "That's right, I have now been a TV Weatherman for 40 years! Congrats to me but more than that, THANKS to you! I appreciate your trust and viewership all these years!"

In my opinion, Billingsley is very good at taking a complicated subject and making it easy for us viewers to understand. He has the ability to make weather segments so conversational that they literally fly by like he was just talking to us in our living rooms. That is a gift. Young TV meteorologists would benefit from watching and trying to figure out how he does it!

Billingsley joined KPRC 2 in February 1995 as chief meteorologist, but Houston TV viewers already knew him from weekend weather on crosstown rival abc13 KTRK. He came to Houston to work at channel 13 on April 22, 1989.

"A family in Channelview told me I saved their lives because of my tornado warnings," Billingsley once said in his bio concerning a 1992 weather event. "Six tornadoes demolished their neighborhood in east Harris County, but they managed to take cover just in time."

Before arriving in Texas, Billingsley worked for WLOX 13 Biloxi, Mississippi starting in 1987.

The Washington and Lee University grad, with a Broadcast Meteorology Certification from Mississippi State University, got his start in television at WDBJ 7 Roanoke, Virginia in 1982.

In his outstanding career, Billingsley has been honored by Texas Associated Press Broadcasters seven times, The Houston Press Club and named the “Ultimate Weatherman” by the Houston Chronicle.

Outside of the KPRC 2 weather center, Billingsley wrote a book in 2017 called "Swabbed & Found" about his DNA journey to find his biological family.

In 2018, he beat prostate cancer after an eight month battle.

Billingsley married his longtime partner, Kevin Gilliard, in 2012. They have a son named Morgan.

The channel 2 meteorologist was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and raised in Mountain Brook, Alabama.

KPRC 2's Frank Billingsley weds partner of 17 years

This year KPRC 2 has been no stranger to big weddings. Most notably anchor Dominique Sachse married Nick Florescu in May.

Now channel 2 viewers get another big one. It's chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley. Billingsley married Kevin Gilliard who he's been with for 17 years. The station says the two got hitched in New York City. The couple was married on 12/12/12. SEE PHOTOS

Click2Houston.com reports the wedding was held at the Eventi Hotel near the Empire State Building. It took place at 8:11pm. Why? The couple met August 11. There were close to 70 attendees including their son, Morgan.

"I think the nation is changing their attitude on the whole issue," Billingsley told the Houston Chronicle. "You will find them very different and much more accepting and supportive. This was really the best day of our lives. It was an affirmation that we wanted to make legally."

I've been pondering this and I think this makes Billingsley the most high profile TV personality in Houston to officially come out in a public way (and of course then get married since that is more of a recent possibility).

Over the years, Billingsley has been the Houston version of Anderson Cooper. Some people heard the rumors about his sexuality, but most probably didn't even think about it and just wanted him to tell them if a hurricane was coming our way.

The first time I heard about Billingsley being gay had to be from KLOL's Stevens and Pruett show in the 90s and they only indirectly talked about it. Much like Good Morning America's Sam Champion, Billingsley addressed his sexuality directly with a marriage announcement.

According to his station bio, Billingsley was raised in Alabama, and came to work at KTRK 13 in 1989. He was the weekend meteorologist there. In 1995, Billingsley made the jump to KPRC 2 where he has been ever since. I remember he had a non-compete clause, so KPRC ran promos where they showed video of clouds and said something like "The Houston weather is about to become more Frank."

Frank Billingsley's meeting with Nick Lachey was probably 98 degrees

Frank Billingsley ran into Nick and Vanessa Lachey at Eloise Nichols Grill & Liquors in Westheimer Oaks.

Lachey, who is a member of pop group 98 Degrees, is also starring in "Love Is Blind" and "The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On" on Netflix with wife Vanessa.

It's only fitting that the KPRC 2 chief meteorologist encounters someone in a pop group called 98 Degrees. Especially since Houston is nearing that temperature this weekend!

Hopefully Billingsley can find someone in a group called 72 Degrees. My wife added that he needs to run into a member from Kool & the Gang.

Now as to why the Lacheys are in Houston...who knows?

Frank Billingsley talks to Anthony Yanez about his KPRC 30-year career

It's hard to imagine that Frank Billingsley will no longer be the KPRC 2 Houston chief meteorologist at the end of June, but that day is coming.

Morning meteorologist Anthony Yanez recently talked to Billingsley about his television weather career.

In the interview, Billingsley touches on such meteorological topics as:

- One of the most memorable hurricanes that Billingsley covered was Hurricane Ike in 2008 and how he later flew over the Bolivar Peninsula to survey the damage.

- Another memorable moment in his career was during Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Frank was the first one to warn people that Harvey would bring 50 inches of rain.

The biggest change in the weather forecasting industry over the years has been the availability and quality of computer models.

- He says that the data going into the models is the biggest challenge.

Frank Billingsley emcees Alzheimer's Association Houston gala with special guest Maria Shriver

Frank Billingsley was the emcee of the Alzheimer’s Association Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter "An Evening of HOPE" gala.

The KPRC 2 chief meteorologist led the "raise the auction paddle" which earned more than $100,000 in donations. He also shared his personal connection with the disease.

The inaugural event, co-chaired by Phoebe Tudor and Kelli Weinzierl, was held April 13, 2023 at The Corinthian in downtown Houston.

Maria Shriver, the Founder of the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement and Strategic Advisor on Women’s Health and Alzheimer’s at Cleveland Clinic, was the special guest speaker.

Also with special messages included Queen Sofía of Spain and Dr. Huda Zoghbi, a world-renowned neuroscientist.

Dr. Laura Baker of the Wake Forest School of Medicine was the mission speaker.

Frank Billingsley celebrates 35 years as a meteorologist

This month, we celebrated Tom Koch and Melanie Lawson's 35 years at abc13 KTRK, but don't put the balloons and party favors away just yet.

Over at KPRC 2, chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley is celebrating 35 years on the green screen.

Thanks to anchor Bill Balleza for letting us know on Facebook.

"Who'd a thunk it? Thanks for the shout out, Bill," Billingsley responded on Facebook.

Billingsley might not have been in Houston his entire TV weather career, but he's pretty close.

He arrived at KTRK abc13 in 1989 to handle weather duty on the weekend newscasts.

By 1995, he was the chief over at KPRC 2 where he has been giving us forecasts and easing our fears during hurricanes and tropical troubles for years.

If memory serves, when Billingsley made the switch between channels 13 and 2, he had to be off the air for a time due to contractual obligations.

During his on air break, KPRC started running promos with clouds in the background with a voice over saying something like, "The weather is about to get very 'Frank'" or something to that effect.

Billingsley started his TV career in Roanoke, Virginia and in 1987 he made a career stop in Biloxi before coming to Houston.

Frank Billingsley's photo used to scam woman

It sounds like something that would belong on MTV's Catfish more than KPRC 2, but the station reported its own chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley's image was used by a scammer to steal a woman's life savings.

Here is more from channel 2's report:

She dreamed of a future with Gold and his young son, Richard, which included the promise of a luxury home in the Houston area, along with millions of dollars.

“He got paid for his job and it's over $4 million," Jean said. "He wanted to put it in my account just in case something happened to him that me and Richard, his son,would be taken care of.”

The truth is, the man claiming to be David Gold is a fraud. David Gold doesn't exist and neither does his son Richard.

There's a Houston twist to this scam, which caught everyone at KPRC off guard.

The man claiming to be David Gold is actually a scammer using our Frank Billingsley's photos to create a fake online identity.

Jean's son actually helped unravel the scam by doing a reverse image search of Billingsley's picture, which had been sent to Jean by the scammer. One of the many images the scammer had sent to Jean was Billingsley's professional KPRC headshot.

“Once I saw the news reporter -- the weatherman -- I couldn't believe it," Jean's son said. "I ran downstairs with my laptop and showed my mom. I was like, 'Look mom, this is the guy you've been talking to and it's been faked the whole time.'” READ THE REST

KPRC 2 anchors Dominique Sachse, Bill Balleza & chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley went national last night as they all made separate appearances on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

In a segment called, I've Got Good News and Good News, host Jimmy Fallons gives anchors at NBC affiliates across the country stories he and his staff wish could actually be on TV. His reasoning is there is too much bad stuff in the news these days.

Besides, Frank's forecast of 100% puppy hugs is a great way to end hurricane season.

Frank Billingsley announces he is cancer free

Last September, KPRC 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley announced his prostate cancer diagnoses in attempts to raise awareness for early detection.

Now Billingsley Facebooks a great update on that:

GOOD NEWS: Last Friday's MRI following my gold nanoparticle procedure for prostate cancer came back this evening as Cancer Free! I'll have a PSA test in January and a biopsy again in March to confirm, but Dr. Steven Canfield and his colleagues are very confident that I've had a successful procedure. The pic below is my first MRI from July 20th. It's been a long few months. Thank you, everyone, for the support!

Yanez joined KPRC on July 15, 2003, from KRQE 13/KASA FOX 2 Albuquerque, NM. His first day on the air was Hurricane Claudette coverage.

In 2015, he left for KNBC Los Angeles to be the noon and 5pm meteorologist, where he worked with Daniella Guzman before she returned to Houston.

Yanez returned to KPRC mornings in 2021 when Britta Merwin left for FOX Weather.

With more than 25 years of broadcast news experience, Yanez holds seals of approval from the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the National Weather Association (NWA). The Radio & Television News Association of Southern California awarded him the 2020 Best Weathercast.

I received many questions about whether Yanez would take over for Frank. The audience expected this. So, who will take over for Yanez? I have my idea, and that staple weighs a ton.

The longtime weatherman for KPRC channel 2 is one of the most capable and well liked meteorologists in the city. But when he came out as openly gay and even married his partner in a ceremony in New York City recently where same-sex marriage is legal, it ruffled some feathers. Still, Billingsley doesn't really consider himself an advocate.
