Former CW33 KDAF DFW chief meteorologist Kevin Roth joins abc13 KTRK

On his old CW33 KDAF (sister station to CW39 KIAH Houston) bio, chief meteorologist Kevin Roth said the number 13 was a lucky number. That certainly turned out to be true as Roth has joined abc13 KTRK Houston to help out as meteorologist Rachel Briers head to maternity leave.

"Everyone welcome Kevin! Kevin will be helping out the weather team while I’m on maternity leave," Briers posted on Facebook. "Of course, I’ll let you all know when we welcome our little girl into the world! Right now, I’m getting some rest before the big day!"

In addition to Roth's DFW television work, if you live in Houston, or any other market Tribune's EyeOpener morning show was syndicated to, then you probably watched him deliver the weather there too.

It is unclear how long Roth stayed with KDAF after EyeOpener was cancelled. He might have stayed for MorningDose, but I am not sure on that either. His LinkedIn profile still says he actively works for KDAF which at this time has no news that I am aware of.

But his LinkedIn does tell us since May 2014, Roth has been chief meteorologist for website RotoGrinders.com. The site bills itself as "The leading Daily Fantasy Sports content provider." It appears that Roth not only forecasts for RotoGrinders, but he also provides forecasts on SiriusXM too.

It appears channel 13 has hired a talent known around the nation in multiple ways!

Before Texas TV news, Roth worked for KSLA Shreveport, LA (March 2011 to September 2013) and WABG Greenville, MS (February 2010 to January 2011).

"I’m often described as 'lovably-nerdy,' a title I consider to be the ultimate compliment," Roth wrote on his KDAF bio. "I have a Bachelor’s in Science from THE Florida State University and a Master’s Degree in Atmospheric Science from Mississippi State University. My strong science background is paired with a personality that is, at best, quirky (and at times downright goofy), allowing me to provide a forecast which is both informative and entertaining."

Kevin Roth adds a new family member

New abc13 KTRK meteorologist Kevin Roth's baby was born May 6th and the new dad couldn't be happier.

"Charley Kay Roth was born yesterday morning, mom and baby are both doing great," Roth tweeted. "It is without a doubt the most incredible feeling in the world."

Did you catch that name? Charley?

Well reporter Charly Edsitty noticed.

"Welcome to the world CHARLEY! It’s a GIRL." Edsitty tweeted. "I played a small role (I’m so honored!) in making sure this bundle of joy received the best name on the planet! 🙂 Charley, carry your name with pride! - Charly"

All joking aside, Roth did acknowledge on Instagram that Charly E. inspired Charley Roth!

"No lie you kinda sealed the deal on the name," Roth posted. "We already liked it, but seeing it and hearing it in use all the time at work (and thus KNOWING it was cute) was the clincher :)"

Speaking of babies, Roth showed up in Houston after abc13 KTRK weekend meteorologist Rachel Briers had her baby.

Are we watching a CW33 KDAF daily digital show morphing into an actual morning television newscast?

Could a daily digital show on CW33 KDAF Dallas really be development for a new morning television newscast? Well, a tease on social media pretty much says that, but more on that in a minute!

After NewsFix and the syndicated version of Morning Dose were cancelled before Irving-based Nexstar Media Group bought Tribune Media, CW33 KDAF in Dallas-Fort Worth stopped producing newscasts.

Morning Dose's syndicated set at KDAF in Dallas, was shipped to Houston and the show, in name only, continued on CW39 KIAH with a new team.

Now it appears KDAF is set to start morning news on its TV signal once again.

In early April, the station launched a digital program called “Coronavirus: The Daily” hosted by DFW TV personalities Ron Corning and Jenny Anchondo with producer Melissa Plaskoff.

Corning, as DFW watchers will know, left WFAA 8's Daybreak in March of 2019. He was an anchor on the show for eight years. Before that, you might have seen him nationally on World News Now and ABC World News This Morning or The Daily Buzz.

Anchondo's last TV gig was co-host of the syndicated version of Morning Dose. Before that Anchondo anchored the FOX 4 KDFW weekend morning newscasts, “Good Day Saturday” and “Good Day Sunday” and reported for "Good Day" throughout the week. Before Texas, she worked for WXIN Indianapolis, KOLD Tucson, AZ, KNDU/KNDO Kennewick, Washington and KQQQ-AM Pullman, Washington.

After Morning Dose, Anchondo has teamed up with her husband for the podcast, Second Shot with Heath Oakes and Jenny Anchondo.

Now there are teases on social media that this digital project is going to TV. It doesn't get anymore clearer than "Sneak Peek! New AM show coming soon to [CW33] #REHEARSAL".

Here is where I will throw in my unsolicited two cents, no matter what any TV station says, digital shows are not where the money is...not yet at least. The moneymaker, even with declining TV news viewership before the coronavirus, is the actual television signal.

In Houston at least, I look at some of the view counts the station's digital shows get on YouTube and they are minuscule compared to the actual television news broadcasts. It appears hitting a thousand views would be a cause for celebration.

Erica Simon promoted to 10pm anchor

Erica Simon, an abc13 KTRK Houston weekend morning co-anchor, announced Sunday that she's moving to "Monday through Friday in the evenings." Now, for the rest of the story, as multiple sources tell mikemcguff.com that means Simon has been promoted to channel 13's 10pm newscast.

"Congratulations on your new assignment," tweeted 10pm anchor Gina Gaston.

Now, Simon did not coordinate this announcement with me since I was out of town and couldn't post about it, but she clearly has a loyal fan base as many of her viewers let me know about her big news! Thanks to everyone who reached out.

No surprise Simon is popular, as she always ranked in the top five of abc13 employees back when I tracked Houston TV social media metrics.

Here is what Simon told her fans live on-air Sunday morning:

"I wanted to share some exciting news with you guys. This is my last day anchoring weekend mornings. Don't worry. It's not goodbye, though. It's just see you weekdays instead of a super early alarm clock, you can now catch me Monday through Friday in the evenings. 

Honestly, this is a dream come true for me. I'll still be doing what I love for you and with abc13, but getting some more sleep and having some much needed weekends with my family. 

Now to all you weekend morning loyalists, you know who you are. Thank you. Your support and friendship truly means the world to me. 

Jeff [Ehling] and Kevin [Roth] have been the best team one could ask for, and thankfully, I still get to see them in the newsroom and I'll still be sending them those annoying group texts about crazy news or our latest adventures. 

Again, not goodbye, just a great new beginning Mondays through Fridays with ABC 13 and again, more sleep. Yes."

Early this year, Simon was honored as one of CORE's "100 Most Influential Blacks Today." She has also been elected to the board of The Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ).

Simon joined abc13 Houston in 2017 from Action News Jax WJAX-WFOX Jacksonville, Florida where viewers then knew her as Erica Bennett.

She previously worked for KTAL NBC 6  Shreveport, Louisiana and KOMU Columbia, Missouri.

The University of Missouri grad and Dallas native interned with NBC 5 KXAS DFW.

abc13 KTRK meteorologist Rachel Briers had her baby just a few days shy of her expected April due date.

"Tenley made her debut, a little early, on March 26... all 5 pounds, 5 ounces of her," Briers posted to Facebook. "Our family of three is doing great! A huge thank you to all the amazing nurses and doctors who took care of our family!"

As most will know, Lawson lost her father, the legendary Reverend William A. Lawson in May 2024 and has been off-air since then.  

Today, meteorologist Kevin Roth just shared the news that Melanie has unfortunately also been out with foot issues.

Lawson celebrated four decades with Channel 13 in 2022.  Here is to many more!

This morning, my inbox and socials were full of questions from loyal newscast viewers of abc13 KTRK's Collin Meyers asking where the heck the weekend morning meteorologist has been lately?

They want to know whether Myers has left the Disney/ABC owned Houston television station.

Myers' fans tell me they noticed he has not been on Channel 13's airwaves as of late.

They have also seen that he's changed his social media names and bios to remove any mention of abc13 or KTRK.

Well, Myers still has a bio on the abc13 KTRK anchor news team bios page.

In years past, if channel 13 has an anchor, reporter or meteorologist's bio on its website, that on air talent still is technically employed with the station.

Covering the weather this morning in place of Myers was meteorologist Kevin Roth.
