Jeopardy! moves to KTRK abc13 from KHOU 11 after many decades

KTRK abc13 to start airing Jeopardy! Sept 14th at 3pm

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 11, 2015
KHOU 11 expands 4pm newscast to one hour

 photo jeopardy_alextrebek_zpsb7sspdq2.jpg
Alex, I'll take a great Houston TV steal for $1000.

Based on the email and social media comments I'm receiving, KTRK abc13's grab of Jeopardy! from KHOU 11 must be one of the best gets in Houston television history.

The Alex Trebek hosted game show has aired in Houston on KHOU 11 for at least 20+ years if memory serves. So in the Bayou City, this is quite a seismic shock.

Now, other shows have moved around the Houston TV dial, but let's face it, not many syndicated shows have the history of Jeopardy! So after decades on the same channel, this is a big deal to Houston TV watchers.

Now for the Daily Double. The big question I'm getting is why is this happening? Well, TV shows pay a fee to the owners of syndicated shows (non-network) like Jeopardy! Maybe new KHOU 11 owner Tegna doesn't want to pay the Jeopardy! price anymore. Maybe channel 13 was willing to pay more? Don't know the answer, but money always plays a part in these moves.

If Wheel of Fortune leaves channel 11's 6:30pm slot, then I think the entire city will shut down like on half-inch snow days.

Channel 13 will start airing Jeopardy! Sept 14th at 3pm. Tune in early on the same day at 1pm for Tyra Banks' new show FABLife.

On one last abc13 related note, just announced this morning, Joy Behar is returning to ABC’s The View next season.

Pooja Lodhia appears on "Jeopardy!"

abc13 KTRK reporter Pooja Lodhia makes a cameo on "Jeopardy!"

OK...this is becoming a trend.

First we had channel 13 anchors Melanie Lawson and Tom Koch ask a question on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. And soon we will have abc13 KTRK meteorologist Collin Myers appear as a contestant on the show.

And today, we had abc13 KTRK reporter Pooja Lodhia ask a question on the boss of all trivia shows Jeopardy!

'Jeopardy' is moving on abc13 KTRK

After abc13 KTRK started running promos for the new TV fall season, I've been receiving lots of questions about the coming changes to channel 13's daytime schedule.

So here’s the new channel 13 lineup as of September 9, 2019:

11:30am Jeopardy

12pm Strahan, Sara and Keke

1pm Tamron Hall

2pm General Hospital

Eyewitness News at 3pm with Chauncy Glover and Mayra Moreno

That means the 11am news will be shortened to 30 minutes. I think its been an hour since soap opera Port Charles (remember the vampire story line) was cancelled in 2003.

Jeopardy currently runs at 1pm with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire at 1:30pm. It was announced in May that Millionaire has been cancelled. So with Jeopardy moving to 11:30am, that leaves a full hour for the new Tamron Hall talk show to run at 1pm.

CBS News Texas

CBS 11 KTVT Dallas-Fort Worth is replacing its "CBS News Texas at 6:00pm" newscast with 'Jeopardy' starting Monday, September 11, 2023 according to an ad running on the station.

As you might imagine, when an owned and operated network station drops a 6pm newscast in a major market, the emails start rolling in.

One viewer emailed me saying, "Shocked is the only way to describe it."

So for weekday afternoon/evening news at KTVT you will soon have:

CBS News Texas at 4:00pm

CBS News Texas at 5:00pm

CBS Evening News with Norah O'Donnell

CBS News Texas at 10:00 PM New

The 6pm hour will be all game shows as 'Jeopardy' is scheduled ahead of 'Wheel of Fortune' which already airs at 6:30pm.

If you can wait until 7pm, then CBS-owned sister station TXA-21 KTXA will debut "CBS News Texas at 7:00pm" starting on 9-11-23.

Currently, KTXA airs the 9pm newscast "CBS News Texas Now" produced through its Innovation Lab, but this show goes away on Sept. 11, replaced by "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

Meanwhile, down I-45, a Houston station is adding TV newscasts the same day.

KHOU 11 announces 4pm newscast

Finally, the news we've all been expecting...:

Beginning August 1, KHOU 11, Houston’s CBS station, will add a half-hour of news to its weekday lineup with KHOU 11 News at 4. The newscast will fill the timeslot previously occupied by Oprah. Viewer-favorite Jeopardy will air at 4:30 pm.

“We are thrilled to be able to repurpose this time period with two moves that will serve viewers local news and information, followed by Jeopardy, a show that Houstonians have watched on KHOU for 25 years,” said KHOU President and General Manager Susan McEldoon.

The program will be anchored by Len Cannon, who will continue his current role as co-anchor of KHOU’s 6 pm newscast. An award-winning anchor and reporter, Len came to KHOU in 2006 from WNYW-TV in New York. While in New York, he was also a correspondent for Dateline NBC and a back-up anchor for NBC Nightly News and Weekend Today.

“Len was the perfect choice for this newscast because he is both a solid journalist and has a warm personality,” said Executive News Director Philip Bruce. “This newscast will show both strengths.”

“KHOU 11 News at 4 gives us a chance to bring viewers the big news of the day, while the stories are still developing. It’ll be immediate, fast-paced and plugged-in to what’s happening at the moment. Plus, we’ll spend some time each day looking at fun, interesting things happening across Houston and all the surrounding communities,” Bruce continued.

Joining Len to cover weather, KHOU welcomes a new face to Houston, Chita Johnson. Chita comes to Houston from KRCR-TV in Redding, CA where she was the morning meteorologist for the past four years. She is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society and has received the seal of approval from both organizations.

Doug Miller named Rice University director of news and media relations

Doug Miller, a member of the Houston Chronicle editorial board and a longtime reporter and manager for KHOU-TV, has been appointed director of news and media relations in Rice University’s Office of Public Affairs, effective Aug. 8.

He succeeds B.J. Almond, who retired Aug. 3.

"Doug Miller's writing and editing skills and decades of experience in print and broadcast journalism will be valuable assets to our news and media relations team," said Vice President for Public Affairs Linda Thrane. "Doug knows Houston and his journalism experience and expertise will help us strengthen our efforts to share news about Rice University with the world."

Miller will oversee the team that issues news releases, expert alerts and media advisories, responds to media queries and produces Rice News, Dateline Rice and @Rice. He will also serve as a member of the Crisis Management Team and assist with emergency notifications to students, staff and faculty.

"Rice University is one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the nation, so I'm honored just walking onto the campus knowing I now belong here," Miller said. "After more than 30 years in the news business, I feel like I just grabbed a brass ring."

Miller joined the Chronicle's editorial board in 2016 and has served as a public policy adviser and writer covering positions and candidates endorsed by the newspaper. He has written editorials on local, state and national issues.

Prior to the Chronicle, he spent nearly 25 years at CBS affiliate KHOU, where he won four Emmys and two Edward R. Murrow Awards for excellence in broadcast journalism. He served as a senior reporter, executive editor and chief of the Washington bureau between 1993 and 2016. He led a staff of 20 broadcast reporters and he specialized in politics and government reporting,

At KHOU, in addition to supervising political polling and election coverage, he organized partnerships with academic institutions and worked on political surveys with Rice political scientist Bob Stein. He also collaborated with Rice sociologist Stephen Klineberg to produce television reports based on the Kinder Houston Area Survey. Miller served as a panelist and organizer of live televised debates between candidates for U.S. president, Congress, Texas governor and Houston mayor. He covered the White House, Capitol Hill and the Supreme Court during his tenure as Washington bureau chief.

Miller's journalism experience also includes serving as managing editor of the Houston Business Journal from 1985 to 1993 and as a news reporter, news anchor and talk show host for KTRH-AM from 1980 to 1985. He has been a traffic reporter for Houston Traffic Central, a news anchor for KULF-AM in Houston and for KROD-AM in El Paso, Texas, and a talk show host for KISO-FM, also in El Paso.

Miller is a founding member of the Texas chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences..

A native of Fredericktown, Mo., Miller has a B.A. in history from the University of Houston. His interests include bird-watching, photography, bicycling and marathon running. He was the first Houstonian to appear on the syndicated version of "Jeopardy!" and won $16,000 during his three-day appearance on the game show in 1985.

Melanie Lawson had an amazing ABC13 Houston send-off

Melanie Lawson

Melanie Lawson signed off ABC13 KTRK Houston on Thursday night after 43 years, and the station she has given so much of her life to celebrated the longtime anchor with a spectacular sendoff.

The day, which was declared as Melanie Lawson Day in the City of Houston by Mayor John Whitmire, ended with the big announcement that the ABC13 news department conference room will be renamed after Lawson, so she will forever be connected with the daily story selections of Houston's number one-rated television station.

And in my conversation with Lawson at the end of the night, after a "Month of Melanie" honors throughout January celebrating her storied career, Lawson said she was ready to take it easy for the next few days.  We can all agree, she's earned that right.

KTRK outdid itself with a fancy events tent, complete with catering, a champagne toast, and a commemorative whiskey glass for guests featuring an etching of the abc13 logo, the "Cheers to 43 years!" inscription, and Lawson's image on the bottom of the glass!

The big event not only featured her current KTRK family, but also folks from other Houston television stations, including Disney executives who flew in.

People seen in the crowd included Joel Osteen, Laura Ward, former mayor Bill White, Jan Carson, Linda Lorelle, Mary Benton, Jerome Gray, Isiah Carey, and Congressman Al Green.

Former KTRK staffers I saw included Tom Koch, Jaime Zamora, Wendy Granato, Ilona Carson, Deborah Wrigley, Lori Reingold, and Justin Sternberg.

And if the famous faces in the tent weren't enough, nationally known figures also offered messages on video in a montage.

Names included were Robin Roberts, Art Rascon, Tamron Hall, Michael Strahan, Ken Jennings of Jeopardy, George Stephanopoulos, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, Mayor John Whitmire, Joel and Victoria Osteen, and ABC News Group President Debra OConnell.  Maybe the face that got the biggest reaction in a room full of Channel 13 employees was Lawson's former Live at Five co-anchor Bob Boudreaux.

Speakers included KTRK president and general manager Mike Carr, ABC Owned Television Stations president Chad Matthews, and ABC13's news director Keaton Fox.

After the speeches honoring the esteemed anchor, Lawson spoke to the crowd, noting that she grew up during segregation and that she is now leaving the station with the station's first Black general manager.

In retirement, Lawson told me she plans to travel with her husband, John Guess Jr., the CEO of the Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC).

As for more on Lawson's future endeavours, stay tuned to this very blog!

Why evil robots want to kill you and other tech stories

Small businesses can find blogging useful, but it takes some elbow grease.

You supposedly can become addicted to Wikipedia's discussion forums. Then go look at which corporations are editing entries. I don't read the site for the articles, I just look at the pictures.

Music fans should really have their phone on them at all times. I did and got a picture of my wife with Duff McKagan. It's different than the 70s when blind children whistled and became phreakers named Joybubbles.

Hit 88 mph and go back in time with a Humble, TX dude who is trying to revive the DeLorean.

Supposedly the city of Houston's deal with Earthlink could be in jeopardy. I don't know much about this because I wasn't one of the chosen few to blog about this when it was announced. That's fine, I've been trying to wire the Internet into my brain with a pair of rusted pliers and an old TV antenna set. Wish me luck!

Is the Motorola/Verizon V325i making us remember terrible days in American history while we text?

Remember, Barcamp Houston is this Saturday. I've been spending the whole week trying to figure out the perfect costume to wear.

Doug Miller leaving KHOU 11 after 23 years

Legendary Houston reporter Doug Miller leaving KHOU 11 after more than two decades at the station

Doug Miller
Doug Miller
Whenever I tweet a story from KHOU 11's website, it always seems the byline belongs to reporter Doug Miller. That's no accident considering Doug Miller has been one of Houston's finest reporters for 23 years at the CBS affiliate.

After two decades, Miller is leaving.

"Now I know how Biggio felt during his last game," Miller told mikemcguff.com. "That television station on Allen Parkway has been very, very good to me. I was lucky enough to help build one of the nation's most respected local television newsrooms and that'll be in my DNA until the day I die."

While he says he is not retiring, he is taking that TEGNA buyout offer I blogged about several months ago (I hear several of the station's photographers will most likely follow him out the door).

Watch some of Doug Miller's amazing work during the April 18, 2016 Houston floods
----------------------------

The former Jeopardy! contestant has worked as a police reporter all the way to a newspaper editor during his decades in the Houston news trenches.

At age 16, Miller hosted a "Watergate-era" telephone talk show in El Paso. That led him to the University of Houston, where Miller lived in the dorm down the hall from CBS Sports broadcaster Jim Nantz and prof golfer Fred Couples.

His journalism career continued and led him to the newsrooms of 740 KTRH, United Press International's Houston bureau and the Houston Business Journal. After he rose to the role of managing editor of the HBJ, Miller started filing daily business reports for channel 11's morning newscast. Those appearances led Miller to become a full-time reporter with the station in 1993.

During his KHOU time, Miller has worked as the station's Washington bureau chief where he covered the White House, Capitol Hill and various presidential campaigns. In 2007, Miller traded the streets for a desk in the KHOU newsroom when he was promoted to executive editor. But the call of the streets were too strong. About four years later, Miller returned to reporting.

"One of the moments I'll never forget was waking up in the middle of the night during Tropical Storm Allison and turning in the TV to see our newsroom was flooding," Miller recalled to me. "I knew my car would never make it through the streets. so I started walking to the station. As luck would have it, Jeff McShan happened to drive by in a live truck and picked me up."

I'm sure there are a lot of employers in the Bayou City who will jump at a chance to snatch up Miller, but in the meantime, I bet he will enjoy a lot of time at Minute Maid Park watching his Houston Astros.

"I've got a closet full of rain gear decorated with old KHOU logos," Miller added. "If they need me in a pinch, God help me, I'd probably still meet the live truck halfway."

There will be a retirement party for Miller next week. He says he will be reporting for the station a couple of more weeks.

Smartest shows in TV history

Jim Werdell, chairman of Mensa International, released his picks for the smartest television shows of all time:

1. "M*A*S*H" – It had smart repartee and was so much more than a comedy.
2. "Cosmos" (with Carl Sagan) – Sagan was able to communicate something extremely complicated to the layman and do it well, and that’s unusual for a scientist at his level.
3. "CSI" — The way they use science to solve their programs is intriguing to viewers.
4. "House" – Again, it’s high level type of show; it’s the personality that makes it a winner, plus it deals with science.
5. "West Wing" – You had to pay attention to stay up with it. The repartee was fast and furious and you needed a fairly high level intelligence to keep up with it.
6. "Boston Legal" – It’s primarily because of the characters. The story lines are okay, but the characters are incredible and the writers give them great dialogue.
7. "All in the Family" – The show dealt with social issues before its time and was on the forefront of trying to show people’s feelings, beliefs and the complexities of personality, in both a serious and comedic way.
8. "Frasier" – The repartee was sensational; the main characters were very good. Even though they portrayed people who were likely of high intelligence, they also showed their weaknesses.
9. "Mad About You" – It’s a personal favorite, I loved the characters and the back and forth. It was very smart.
10. "Jeopardy" – It’s about the only game show that really tries to test people’s intelligence. There’s very little luck involved, and there are few game shows like that. I don’t watch it all that much honestly, but from what I’ve seen it tests more than knowledge, it tests intelligence too.

Lots of folks seem to me angry about Mad About You making the cut. I would say that the sitcom definitely tried to be higher brow than your average prime-time comedy, but I would agree with other bloggers that it should not be there.

I would also say CSI shouldn't be there either. Now a bunch of criminals think they know how to cover their tracks at the crime scene thanks to this gorefest. I am no scientist, but does this show really follow any reality when it comes to true life?
