Britta Merwin and Stephen Morgan join FOX Weather

Britta Merwin, morning KPRC 2 meteorologist and FOX 26 KRIV weekend morning weather meteorologist Stephen Morgan join FOX Weather.

Britta Merwin - FOX Weather

FOX Weather, FOX News Media’s new AVOD streaming weather service, has signed six meteorologists to helm morning, daytime and evening programming across the platform, announced Sharri Berg, president of FOX Weather. Meteorologists Jason Frazer, Britta Merwin, Craig Herrera, Brigit Mahoney, Nick Kosir, and Stephen Morgan will lead the platform’s weather coverage once the streaming service launches later this year.

UPDATE
Britta Merwin and Stephen Morgan FOX Weather debut announced

In making the announcement, Berg said, “We are very excited to announce this first team of very talented meteorologists who will anchor our coverage from the FOX Weather studio headquarters in New York City. They each bring their own unique perspective and local experience from all regions across the country, as we begin to grow our national platform.”

Seasoned meteorologist and investigative reporter Jason Frazer will serve as the platform’s morning news co-host. Since 2019, Frazer has worked as a meteorologist for the NBC affiliated WKYC-TV in Cleveland, OH and previously, spent two years at FOX affiliate WTGS-TV in Savannah, GA where he covered several severe weather events, including Hurricanes Florence, Irma and Michael. He got his start in television news as a reporter, working for CBS affiliated stations in Rochester (WROC-TV), Columbus (WBNS-TV) and Hartford (WFSB-TV), where he was a part of the station’s investigative unit. He went on to work as an investigative reporter for WHDH-TV (NBC) in Boston and NECN, New England’s 24-hour cable network, where his reporting uncovered how landlords in Massachusetts were improperly placing young children on eviction notices, impacting their credit ratings. A graduate of Columbia University, Frazer completed the Broadcast Meteorology Program at Mississippi State University, earning his certificate in meteorology.

Emmy nominated meteorologist Britta Merwin joins FOX Weather from Houston’s KPRC-TV (NBC) and will serve as a morning co-host, alongside Frazer. A Texas native,  Merwin has spent the last seven years with KPRC-TV where she quickly rose through the ranks to become the station’s morning weather forecaster, covering major events, including 2017’s Hurricane Harvey and multiple devastating floods. A graduate of SUNY Stonybrook with a degree in atmospheric sciences and meteorology, Merwin began her career in meteorology at News 12 Long Island. She later moved to NBC Weather Plus where she covered Hurricane Gustav and the 2008 midwestern floods for NBC’s national cable news networks, including MSNBC and CNBC.

Five time local Emmy-award winning meteorologist Craig Herrera joins FOX Weather as a co-anchor of the platform’s key programming blocks. Most recently serving as Seattle’s KING-TV (NBC) meteorologist, Herrera is a Pacific Coast weather expert having covered every major weather event spanning San Diego to Seattle. An American Meteorology Society (AMS) sealed meteorologist, he was a part of the weekday morning news team at San Francisco’s KNTV-TV (NBC) on the weather reporting team at KCBS-TV, in Los Angeles and San Diego’s KGTV-TV (ABC). He received his certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from the University of Mississippi.

Joining FOX Weather from KTVI-TV, the FOX affiliated station in St. Louis, Missouri, Brigit Mahoney will serve as a co-anchor of lead programming dayparts for the service. Since 2016, she has been KTVI’s morning meteorologist where she tracked severe weather in mid-Missouri, keeping viewers up to date on impactful or dangerous weather. Based in the infamous Tornado Alley, she has covered a number of severe weather events throughout Missouri, often traveling into the devastation to provide firsthand reports of the aftermath.  Previously, she worked as a Stormtrack meteorologist at the ABC affiliate KMIZ-TV in Columbia, Missouri. Mahoney attended the University of Missouri, where she studied Soil, Environmental and Atmospheric Science.

Joining FOX Weather from FOX affiliate WJZY-TV in Charlotte, N.C., meteorologist Nick Kosir will serve as co-host for the platform’s evening programming. With more than 2 million followers across both TikTok and Instagram, Kosir, also known as “The Dancing Weatherman,” has gained notoriety beyond his weather reporting as his viral dancing videos have become a pop culture phenomenon — one of which was featured in Lil Nas X’s open at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. A graduate of the University of Akron with a certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University, Kosir most recently served as the morning meteorologist for FOX46’s Good Day Charlotte newscast, where he delivered daily weather reports and covered major events such as Tropical Storm Isaias. Prior to his time in Charlotte, Kosir worked at KBTV-TV, the FOX affiliated station in Beaumont, Texas and KMVT-TV, the CBS/CW affiliate in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Stephen Morgan promoted to FOX 26 weekend morning weather anchor

Now we know why FOX 26 KRIV's Stephen Morgan was doing the "Bootloose" at the end of rodeo! Last week, when I was in London, the general assignments reporter was promoted to weekend morning meteorologist.

UPDATE 2021
Steven Romo and Stephen Morgan are engaged
Stephen Morgan joins FOX Weather

You might remember my post from February 2018, when I wrote about Morgan, who has Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology, taking off his reporter hat and filling in on the weather desk.

Here is the release FOX Television Stations issued while I was across the pond:

HOUSTON – Stephen Morgan has been promoted to FOX 26 weekend morning weather anchor, announced station Vice President and News Director, Susan Schiller. He assumes this role immediately, and will continue to report on various station newscasts.

In making the announcement, Schiller stated, “Stephen’s demonstrated passion for weather was evident from the moment he hit the streets here in Houston as a lead reporter on our coverage of Hurricane Harvey. His formal education as a meteorologist combined with his storytelling skills will keep Houstonians in the know on the day’s weather forecast but, also, on the environmental and climate issues that impact our viewers.”

Most recently, Morgan has served as a general assignment reporter and fill in meteorologist for the station. He began his career in broadcast journalism in 2013 as an anchor and reporter at KRBK in Springfield, Missouri, where he also filled in as a meteorologist.

Morgan added, “Mother Nature has defined so much of my career in local news and I’m excited to begin this new chapter with FOX 26, as well as the great people who call Houston and southeast Texas home. The Gulf Coast presents its own unique forecasting challenges, but I’m ready for it.”

A graduate of Saint Louis University, Morgan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology.

FOX Television Stations owns and operates 28 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S. These include stations located in nine of the top ten largest designated market areas (DMAs), and duopolies in 11 DMAs, including the three largest DMAs (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). In addition to distributing sports, entertainment and syndicated content, our television stations collectively produce nearly 1,000 hours of local news every week. These stations leverage viewer, distributor and advertiser demand for the FOX Network’s national content.

- Steven Romo leaves abc13 KTRK

"Before I met Stephen Morgan, I thought maybe this kind of love just wasn’t in the cards for me," Romo posted on Instagram.  "That it was a journey I’d never take. But now I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. In my whole life. And I’ll soon be moving to New York City with the person I want to spend the rest of my life with."

As I have posted before, Morgan is heading to New York with Britta Merwin, to start the new FOX Weather streaming network, which my guess, will eventually end up on cable.

Morgan just packed his desk at FOX 26 this week for his move to the network level.

"I never dreamed of uttering the words ‘I’m engaged,’ but I also never dreamed of being so happy," Morgan posted ton Instagram. "Yet here we are. I’m engaged. I’m going to marry Steven Romo."

Stay tuned as we learn the date when Romo leaves abc13 KTRK to join Morgan in the Big Apple.

Stephen Morgan talks FOX Weather and FOX 26

Stephen Morgan

Stephen Morgan is jumping from FOX 26 KRIV Houston meteorologist to the national stage with FOX Weather which debuts this Monday, October 25th.

You will be able to catch the free streaming service through its website at foxweather.com, its own app, plus Internet enabled televisions on FOX NOW, FOX News's app and Tubi.

RELATED
Britta Merwin talks FOX Weather and KPRC memories

Houston TV viewers will remember that when he arrived in Houston, Morgan joined FOX 26 as an anchor/reporter.

Now what Morgan had tucked away that most anchors do not is a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Meteorology.

His specialized degree from Saint Louis University came in handy when he was asked to do fill-in weather one weekend and the rest as they say is history.  Within a year, Morgan was promoted to the FOX 26 weekend morning weather anchor.

Morgan talked with me about his move to FOX Weather and his FOX 26 KRIV Houston memories.

Mike McGuff: I'll never forget when you filled-in on weather while a news reporter with FOX 26 KRIV. What is it like from that point to a few years later now about to become a national meteorologist on FOX Weather?

Stephen Morgan: It’s surreal. I feel incredibly lucky because my passion for weather moved me to Houston and now to New York. While I started as a reporter in Houston, I knew weather was going to be a major player in news coverage. I never anticipated joining FOX 26’s weather team, but the opportunity came at a perfect time.

MM:  Are you glad now that you started using your meteorological degree again?

SM: Very much so. I remember a Meteorologist who was a mentor of mine cautioning me to stay in the “weather department” and never go over to the news side. However, I value my time reporting in the field immensely. Telling stories connected me with people. I was able to leave the studio and learn from the communities that make Houston a great, diverse city. And I was often reporting on the effects weather was directly having on people’s lives. Many of those stories, I’ll never forget. When the option to fill-in for weather on that weekend night arrived though, I couldn’t say no. Weather has always been my passion. I was better equipped for the task thanks to my time covering the city on the ground.

MM:  What is it you are looking forward to most when FOX Weather premieres?

SM: Finding a job where I’m immersed in weather has always been my dream. With FOX Weather, it’s now a reality. It’s also exciting that FOX Weather will have the unique ability to reach people who don’t have (or want) cable TV, but still want to stay up-to-date on the weather. Streaming is not the future anymore…it’s the present!

MM:  What are a few of your favorite memories at channel 26?

SM: I enjoyed working weekends with Denise Middleton! And before Denise, there was Rashi Vats & Deneige Broom. We had so much fun (sometimes too much fun) — but let’s be honest, who likes waking up at 3AM on Saturdays & Sundays? You gotta make the most of it!

I was also proud of KRIV’s coverage of Hurricane Harvey. During one of the worst events in the city’s history, I was honored to be part of a team striving to tell people’s stories and show the world what was happening.

MM:  What will you miss most about Houston?

SM:  I lived in Houston for more than four years and it became my home. I met so many great people and also met the man I’m going to marry. Fortunately, I’m not missing him (Steven Romo) since he’s joined me in the Big Apple, but I do miss the kind people & good eats in Houston. Petition to bring more TexMex restaurants to NYC!

MM:  Anything else you want to add?

SM:  I learned so much from my time in Houston, about people, storytelling and forecasting (the February Freeze comes to mind). But I also learned a lot about myself and what drives me. Informing people about the weather has always been my passion and thanks to my time in the Bayou City, I’m better prepared to talk about the weather nationwide.

Stephen Morgan joins FOX 26 KRIV

Anchor/reporter Stephen Morgan joins FOX 26

Covering Houston TV has become like the The Fast and the Furious. Instead of cars zooming back and forth, replace that with anchors and reporters coming and going.

UPDATE 2021
Stephen Morgan joins FOX Weather

Now I've never actually seen any of the The Fast and the Furious movies, and that's including the original Roger Corman version from 1955.

But the latest franchise is so popular that one of its movie stars is considering a run for president.

Anything is possible these days.

"Make America Tough Again" - President The Rock.

Where was I?

Oh yeah, talking about how fast Houston TV talent arrive and exit these days.

After having to fall on the sword for missing Deneige Broom coming to FOX 26 KRIV, I'm now just hanging out on the FOX owned and operated station's bios page.

And it's already paid off!

Heck, at the time of this posting, new FOX 26 reporter Stephen Morgan has his bio up with no text! It's just his picture.

Let me fill you in on the rest.

Morgan comes to Houston from KRBK 49 Springfield, Missouri where he has been an anchor/reporter since 2013 according to his LinkedIn profile.

He has a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Meteorology from Saint Louis University.

That's all I got.

McGuff...mic drop.

By the way, for those asking where FOX 26 morning anchor Jose Grinan is, he posted a video saying he's back at work after being gone for two weeks.

Hopefully you saw my update last Friday when I blogged FOX 26 meteorologist Lisa Vaughn announced she is coming back to work.

Houston TV reporter does weather and pulls it off!

Sunday night, FOX 26 KRIV reporter Stephen Morgan stayed in the studio and did his job in front of the green screen.

UPDATE 2021
Stephen Morgan joins FOX Weather

That's right, a reporter filled-in as the meteorologist.

I don't think in 13 years of writing this blog, I've written a post about this happening!

"Left the reporter hat at home because tonight I’m Houston’s meteorologist," Morgan posted on Facebook.

Turns out that Morgan actually has a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Meteorology from Saint Louis University so he could technically go get a job in weather outside of television news.

Not every Houston TV met could do that.

"Finally putting that college degree to work," he posted. "First Houston forecast is in the books! (now let's see if it's right)..."

Maybe we will see more of Morgan's forecasting work. In the meantime, it looks like meteorologist John Dawson took the weekend off.

These days, being a jack of all trades in the TV biz sounds like a smart plan.

So how did Morgan do? As Warner Wolf says, "Let's go to the videotape!"

The two meteorologists will report live from Houston on Thursday, August 25th and Friday, August 26th.

Who better to send than two mets who lived through Harvey covering it for Houston TV.

The former Houston TV talents will re-visit the neighborhoods and people that were severely impacted and highlight how the community has rebuilt since.

Speaking of FOX Weather and Texas, this clip of one of its reporters rescuing a Dallas woman during the recent floods has been making its way around the web.

The new FOX 26 weekend morning show

Anchor Denise Middleton and meteorologist Stephen Morgan to work FOX 26 KRIV weekend mornings

Just a reminder that FOX 26 weekend mornings are getting a new start.

The station announced in late March that KTHV Little Rock, Arkansas evening anchor Denise Middleton was returning home to H-Town.

“It’s always been my dream to work in my hometown of Houston, alongside some of the anchors and reporters who inspired me to go into this field," Middleton said back then. "After working in Nebraska, Louisiana and Arkansas, I look forward to working at KRIV and sharing the stories of my own community.”

Middleton is a UH Cougar.

A few days after the Middleton announcement, KRIV officially put reporter Stephen Morgan in the weekend morning meteorologist spot.

Don't let the reporter part fool you...Morgan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology from Saint Louis University.

“Mother Nature has defined so much of my career in local news and I’m excited to begin this new chapter with FOX 26, as well as the great people who call Houston and southeast Texas home," Morgan said in the March announcement. "The Gulf Coast presents its own unique forecasting challenges, but I’m ready for it.”

Morgan had already been filling in the weekend morning weather slot for months along with Rashi Vats who had been holding down the anchor chair until Middleton was named.

Stephen Morgan returns to Texas for the eclipse

I hear that former FOX 26 Houston KRIV meteorologist Stephen Morgan is returning to Texas for FOX Weather to help with special solar eclipse marathon coverage up to and on April 8th.

"I enjoyed working weekends with Denise Middleton," Morgan told mikemcguff.com in 2021, looking back at his FOX 26 days.  "And before Denise, there was Rashi Vats and Deneige Broom. We had so much fun (sometimes too much fun) — but let’s be honest, who likes waking up at 3AM on Saturdays & Sundays? You gotta make the most of it!"

He's not the only one hitting the road for FOX Weather's America’s Total Eclipse coverage, as other correspondents and meteorologists will be reporting from across the country in the path of totality.

Apparently, correspondent Casey Stegall will be in Dallas, and multimedia reporter Joy Addison will be in Waco.

Morgan joined FOX 26 as a reporter in 2017 and left for FOX Weather in 2021.

Former KPRC 2 morning meteorologist Britta Merwin also joined FOX Weather with Morgan for the debut of the free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) weather service.

Hottest Houston social media stars September 2018

I didn't issue an August report since there were so many vacations going on, so let's get back to it for September.

Share Rocket gives us data on how each Houston TV station and the corresponding air staff members performed on Facebook and Twitter.

Share Rocket is, "a social media ratings and audience solution providing media companies an easy way to quantify their social media equity, benchmark against peers and turn social market intelligence into insights that drive social success."

The numbers are pulled from station usage on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using Share Rocket's "Share" measurement.

First we are looking at every Houston media company in the Share Rocket database and top personalities. Then I am looking at the top 5 on air staff members at each station in order of channel number.

Steven Romo joins NBC News

Steven Romo announced he will be working for NBC News in October 2021.  In July 2022, Romo was officially hired on with the network as a New York-based correspondent.

"Work update: Hi, Peacock. I’ll soon be reporting & anchoring for @NBCNews, @MSNBC, & @NBCNewsNow. I’m pretty pumped," Romo tweeted.

The former abc13 KTRK weekend morning anchor just left Houston and announced he was moving to New York City with his fiancé, former FOX 26 KRIV meteorologist Stephen Morgan.  Morgan works FOX Weather which debuts October 25th.

That means Romo and Morgan will be working practically across the street from each other in Midtown Manhattan.

Former KPRC 2 meteorologist Britta Merwin (now at FOX Weather) and Eric Braate (now at WNBC 4) meet for lunch half way.

Jennifer Reyna tops last week in Houston TV news

Jennifer Reyna KHOU

I'm usually too lazy to post a summary of the "week that was" on the weekends, but this last one was pretty wild.

First of all, after two years off air, Jennifer Reyna announced her return to Houston TV.

Britta Merwin and Stephen Morgan checked in with us from New York City ahead of FOX Weather's debut on Monday.

We had a Houston TV reporter leaving with little explanation.

The big story around Texas television was the Sinclair ransomware hack and subsequent troubles, plus another station group firing lots of employees.

Then for you hardcore Texas television followers, new GMs were named in Dallas and Waco.

What will next week bring?
