HarD Rock 96-5 HD2 off the air

HarD Rock 96-5 HD2 KHMX appears to have gone off the Houston radio airwaves this week.  

Not only is it off the air, but the entire sub-channel is currently not transmitting at all.

I contacted owner Audacy's corporate PR team for more info, but never heard back.

Are we all having flashbacks to 101 KLOL going off the air right about now?

The station sorta lives online.  At least its branding does for now, but when you click play, you get Audacy's Venom format which is similar to HarD Rock 96-5 in the active rock format. By the way, this was Houston's only active rock formatted station.   

It could be said my blog was brought to you by HarD Rock 96-5 HD2 since I was listening to the digital station most of the time while writing these posts. Will the lack of active rock on the radio in Houston do this blog in?

"Gen X, Xennials and many rock consuming Gen Y members of the Houston radio audience were not being served, so we built a rock radio station just for them," KHMX program director Chase Murphy told mikemcguff.com in 2017 when the station debuted. 

Back then, Murphy described HarD Rock 96-5 HD2 as the only station in Houston to play Metallica to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the Deftones to Pearl Jam to AC/DC and then Avenged Sevenfold. And it seemed to keep this type of format till the very end.

Loyal listeners will also remember the same music trivia spots that ran in addition to the songs.  Hey, at least there were never commercials!  At the same time, that last fact is probably what did the station in.

I believe "The Wave" smooth jazz station was on 96.5 HD3 which is also now gone.  Longtime Houston radio listeners will remember "The Wave" from when it was on 95.7 until 2008 when Hot 95.7 took over, long before "The Spot. "

Beloved Houston Chronicle columnist Leon Hale dies at 99.

Russell "Russ" D. Turner, 82, passed away February 10, 2021, in The Woodlands.  He moved to Houston, TX in 1961 and went to work for KPRC TV (Channel 2) as an audio engineer. Turner retired in 2009 after 49 years with KPRC.

Jessie Watt joins Mix 96.5’s “The Morning Mix”

Entercom, a leading media and entertainment company and one of the two largest radio broadcasters in the U.S., today announced that Jessie Watt will join Houston station Mix 96.5’s (KHMX-FM) “The Morning Mix” as an on-air personality.

Beginning on January 13, she will host the morning show alongside Sarah Pepper and Geoff Sheen, weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. CT.

HarD Rock 96-5 HD2 returns heavy rock to Houston radio

When Entercom merged with CBS Radio stations across the country a few weeks ago, the company began making high profile format changes.

UPDATE MARCH 2023
HarD Rock 96-5 HD2 off the air

First, alternative was brought back to New York on Howard Stern's old station and in Dallas on KVIL which was AMP 103.7.

I didn't think that would happen in Houston since 94.5 The Buzz KTBZ has been serving Houston a healthy dose of alternative hits for more than two decades now. The Buzz keeps on buzzing along in the ratings too.

However, one thing Houston hasn't had since the Z-Rock 106.9 KKZR days is hard rock. Rock 101 KLOL played some hard rock, but it was really a mix of classic rock and slower songs too (although the fan run rock101klol.com does get heavy).

Entercom has changed that with HarD Rock 96-5 HD2. (UPDATE: Based on reader questions, I will add this is on the HD 2 channel of KHMX. Mix 96.5 is still on the air where it always has been on HD 1.)

The station's newly created Twitter account says:

We don't even have a freakin logo yet. But at 3pm on 11/20/17 Houston's HarD Rock 96.5 HD2 was on the air with Rage Against The Machine. #GetHarD

"We are only a few days into the launch and the response has been great," KHMX program director Chase Murphy told mikemcguff.com. "Gen X, Xennials and many rock consuming Gen Y members of the Houston radio audience were not being served, so we built a rock radio station just for them!"

Murphy tells me HarD Rock 96-5 HD2 is the only station that can go from Metallica to the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the Deftones to Pearl Jam to AC/DC and then Avenged Sevenfold.

SportsRadio 610 KILT program director Ryan McCredden has guided the musical direction for the new rock station. He started his radio career at a rock station in Madison, WI.

"It’s great to be able to work with Chase on this project," added McCredden. "He knows music stations and formats, I just know this kind of music! And mostly I’m looking forward to having all sorts of fun with it. Going to concerts and of course giving Houston rock fans a place to rock!"

If you read this blog with any regularity over the years, then you know I am a hard rock/alternative fan.

I've been listening to 96-5 HD2 for the past few days and have really enjoyed what I'm hearing. It's been DJ and commercial free so far.

The mix has been great. I've heard everything from Disturbed, Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden and Guns N' Roses. And get this, they aren't just playing the normal singles either which as a music aficionado I'm digging.

So how do you hear it if you don't have an HD radio?

Murphy assures me the stream will be up very soon. That will be the Radio.com app I'm told.

Earlier this year, 96.5 HD 2 was NASA's Third Rock Radio. However in the last few months, the signal has been without programming.

Chase Murphy new Mix 96.5 KHMX program director

HOUSTON, TX, February 6, 2017-- CBS RADIO Houston today announced that Chase Murphy has accepted the position of Program Director for Mix 96.5, KHMX-FM (Hot AC), effective today. As Program Director, Murphy will have day-to-day responsibilities for Mix 96.5 including digital and event creation.

“Chase is a leader, a team builder, a talent coach and a builder of brands. He is the perfect fit for KHMX, a big brand with great heritage in the Houston market,” said Sarah Frazier, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, CBS RADIO Houston.

Mix 96.5 KHMX starts 2017 at center of Houston radio rumor mill

I know Hot 95.7 KKHH's format flip to The Spot is on the minds of everyone's radio speakers in Houston right now, but what about CBS sister station Mix 96.5 KHMX?

KHMX was in the inscrutable radio rumor mill before 95.7 blew up its longtime identity last Friday. Neither station has been firing up the Nielsen Audio ratings in the last few months (People Meter 6+ Mon-Sun, 6a-12mid) so I can see why the gossip has been coming.

Apparently the Mix 96.5 "The Dave, Mahoney & DK Morning Show" was let go earlier in the week. A little birdie told me that happened. I noticed the show being pulled from the station's web front page. Next, Dave Farra, "The Dave" of the bunch, changed his Twitter bio to remove the CBS and Mix 96.5 mention.

Then radio trade site All Access also reported Mix 96.5 assistant program director/music director/mid-day DJ/man of many hats, Chris Jackson, left the station.

So where does all of this leave us? Well, anything is possible I guess. Here are questions/theories being floated around in the social media world.

Will the former Hot 95.7 staff move to Mix 96.5? Will Mix 96.5 get the CBS Amp treatment? Will Mix 96.5's alleged moribund condition prove untrue, and it continue on with the same programming? Will it go back to being more like Mix of the past? Will it go to a Spanish-language format? Is 95.7 The Spot a temporary stunt format that will quickly become a new station? Will these canards amount to nothing?

Whatever the case, I'm sure CBS Radio is pleased its stations are the subject of this much speculation.
