Anavid Reyes joins KPRC

Anavid Reyes, KVUE 24 Austin morning traffic anchor, joins KPRC 2 in same role

Anavid Reyes is leaving KVUE 24 Austin where she has been the morning traffic anchor for the last three years to come back to Houston and take the same role at KPRC 2.

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2023
Anavid Reyes to leave KPRC 2

UPDATE
Did KPRC traffic reporter meltdown on live TV?

So we now know the answer to the much asked question, who is taking over morning traffic on channel 2 after Jennifer Reyna

Here is what she posted on Facebook:

So hard to say goodbye to this crew, but the time has come... today was my last day as part of #KVUE Daybreak’s morning team serving as their Traffic Anchor for the past 3 years. It’s been an awesome ride, mostly because of this bunch. A big thank you to our loyal viewers who tuned in every morning to watch this crazy crew!
I am happy to announce I’ll be joining KPRC2 / Click2Houston morning team as their Traffic Anchor. I’m THRILLED to be joining such a wonderful team. It’s home for this Houston native, a HUGE blessing to be even closer now to family.

So many people have been asking me about where Jennifer Reyna is heading. I have no idea at this point, but at least we know who is taking over her position.

But back to Reyes, this will actually be a homecoming because back in 2015, she was a web editor for click2houton.com. You might have also heard her as a News92FM KROI feature reporter and web editor from 2013 to 2015.

After Houston, Reyes went to work for KTAB-KRBC Abilene in 2015. She moved to KVUE Austin in 2017.

Reyes, who was born in Monterrey, Mexico, but raised in Houston, is a University of Texas at San Antonio grad. She interned at KABB San Antonio.

UPDATE

KPRC 2 officially announces Anavid Reyes hiring for morning traffic position after Jennifer Reyna:

April 3, 2020 – Houston, TX – In an effort to better serve our community now and even more so after this crisis passes, KPRC 2 continues to add resources to newscasts. Houston-native Anavid Reyes will join the KPRC 2 News Today team as Traffic Reporter/Investigator and will hit the air in early April. She will also be spearheading KPRC’s “What’s Driving Houston” mobility initiative.

Reyes comes to KPRC from KVUE-TV in Austin, where she helped launch the traffic department and served as the station’s Daybreak morning traffic anchor. She has also worked in Abilene, Texas, where she produced, wrote, edited, reported and anchored an all-Spanish newscast for Telemundo, as well as in English for the company’s sister stations, KRBC-TV and KTAB-TV News. Prior to that Anavid worked as a web editor for KPRC’s Click2Houston.com digital platform and served as a feature reporter and web editor at Houston’s News 92FM.

Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Anavid’s family moved to Houston when she was a child. She attended Langham Creek High School, then the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is the first college graduate in her family.

“It’s great having a Native Houstonian on our team,” says Dave Strickland, KPRC 2 News Director. “Anavid’s knowledge of our city, our streets and our culture will make her a huge asset to our team and the communities we continue to serve.”

Anavid considers herself to be a HUGE foodie and an avid animal lover, who looks forward to bringing her husband and three fur babies back to Houston to be closer to her family and her mom’s delicious tamales.

Where is Anavid Reyes?

Anavid Reyes

We now have an answer as to the whereabouts of KPRC 2 morning traffic anchor Anavid Reyes.

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2023
Anavid Reyes to leave KPRC 2

"She was on vacation for 2 weeks," KPRC 2 consumer reporter Amy Davis responded when asked about Reyes on Facebook.  "Now I think she is waiting to make sure she is not sick after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for covid."

As I posted earlier, lots of loyal Anavid Reyes viewers were hitting me up for answers on where she had been lately.

Reyes had not been on TV since late December, nor updated her station social media accounts since then.

She returned on January 17th, 2022.

* This post was updated with Amy Davis's Facebook response and Anavid Reyes's return date

(Thanks Mark!)

Anavid Reyes leaves KPRC 2 Houston

Anavid Reyes left KPRC 2 Houston as its morning traffic anchor on April 5, 2023. Later in May, she  announced that she joined engineering consulting firm  Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. as its Corporate Communications and Community Relations Specialist.

UPDATE APRIL 2023
Justina Latimer joins KPRC 2

Here is what Reyes posted when she signed-off channel 2.

"It has been a WILD ride, and these folks made it so special!! I’m going miss them so much.

And a huge thanks to all of our viewers, serving you was an absolute delight.

It’s not a goodbye, it’s a see you later. Follow me on FB & Insta @anavidreyes … to keep up with all my mooooves!!"

Here is what Reyes originally posted on social media when she announced her KPRC departure in early March 2023:

"My friends, it is with a heavy heart to announce I’ll be leaving KPRC2 / Click2Houston in April, as I take a moment to focus on family.

It’s definitely not the easiest, but it is the best decision for me in this season of life.

It takes a group of talented, creative, servant hearted individuals and strong leaders to produce a high-quality news product, so I feel incredibly proud and blessed to have been part of this team.

But most importantly, THANK YOU for welcoming me into your homes, and sharing your stories, and venting about traffic with me.

I’m going to miss serving you all the most. I'll still be in Houston and will be out and about so make sure to follow me on Insta & FB: @anavidreyes to keep up with what I’m up to! But we still have a whole month together left, no tears just yet."

The real Reyes came to KPRC 2 in 2020 from KVUE Austin where she was also the morning traffic anchor since 2017. Reyes replaced Jennifer Reyna, who had just left KPRC near the end of 2019. Reyna later joined KHOU 11 in October 2021.

By the way, the Houston raised Reyes had previously worked at KPRC in 2015 as a web editor for click2houston.com.  Around the same time, she was also a feature reporter and web editor for the now defunct News92FM KROI.

She later worked for KTAB-KRBC Abilene in 2015.

The University of Texas at San Antonio grad interned for FOX 29 KABB San Antonio.

And before anyone asks, no, it was not the real Anavid Reyes who had a meltdown on live TV! That was a comedian.

(Thanks Shad)

Did KPRC reporter meltdown on live TV?

YouTube comedian John Crist's latest funny look at television news uses Houston's KPRC 2 in his recent video "Traffic Reporter Melts Down on Live TV."

The premise is no one watches TV newscasts for current traffic reports.

What Crist might not realize is that now passed-away, former KTRK reporter Thom Dickerson, created this Houston traffic meme (NSFW), before we knew what a meme was...many, many years ago!

Now, you have to hand it to Crist though, he has reprinted the KPRC 2 microphone flag, is wearing a KPRC 2 Houston branded vest and has carefully recreated KPRC on screen graphics.

At the same time, he is pretending to be channel 2's real traffic anchor Anavid Reyes.  They don't exactly look alike!

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2023
Anavid Reyes to leave KPRC 2

He used an actual KPRC anchor intro with Kris Gutierrez and Dominique Sachse.  While Gutierrez's voice is real, Sachse's voice has been dubbed over by someone else. This is actually to work in a joke later in the video when he is pretending to talk to  Sachse from the field.

Houstonians will laugh at the fact that johnbcrist immediately refers to I-24.  That interstate actually runs through the Midwestern and Southeastern US...nowhere near Texas.

We can assume the video was shot on I-24 in Nashville, TN and near Haywood Lane (Exit 57) which shows up in b-roll at the end.

Previously the comedian pretended to be a "weatherman" melting down on Denver7 KMGH.  After this week, he can now do one of these videos for Texas TV.

And if you like this type of thing, I recently wrote about another online comedian who did a similar piece with Arby's and KPRC sister-station WDIV Detroit in "We Dem Arby's BoyZ."

Houston TV traffic anchors battle over METRO buses

Houston TV traffic anchors guide drivers through the maze we call a freeway system, but now they are the ones that have to do the driving.

And they are driving behind the big wheels of a METRO bus.

The TV bus driving competitors:

Jennifer Reyna / KHOU 11

Coco Dominguez / FOX 26 KRIV

Anavid Reyes / KPRC 2

Rodolfo Sánchez / Univision 45 KXLN

In the 2022 METRO Traffic Reporter Bus Rodeo, these brave Houston-area traffic reporters got behind the wheel to see if they have what it takes to wrangle a 40-foot METRO bus through one of the toughest safety courses in Texas!

And the winner is...KPRC 2′s Anavid Reyes!

Want to get behind the wheel of your own METRO bus? METRO is looking for new Bus Operators.

Houston radio was not left out.  104.1 KRBE's The Roula and Ryan Show on-air talent gave it a try too.

Burns married husband and professional basketball player, Karon Bradley, in August of 2022 and he is the reason for her Houston move.

"My husband is a Houstonian through and through," Burns told KPRC2+ 8am digital anchor Zach Lashway.  "Like, I've never met anyone who loves their hometown as much as him. So I'm here now with him, and I'm so happy.

"And we're truly newlyweds because I was working in Virginia after we got married in August for about six months. And then I moved here in January."

Burns compares her relationship with Bradley to the film "Love & Basketball."

"So, yeah, we met in college," Burns explained. "We both played basketball at Wichita State University, and he was on the men's team. Obviously I was on the women's team, and we we started dating and it started that way."

Bradley, a Cy-Springs High School grad, was on the 2003 Marquette University team which earned a spot in the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.  He transferred to Wichita State University in 2006. After graduation in 2007, Bradley played pro basketball overseas.

In addition to her CBS 6 Richmond duties, Burns also anchored sister-station DCW50 WDCW's News at 10PM from 2016 too 2018. In 2015, Burns helped launch CBS6 Problem Solvers which earned her an EMMY award in 2020.

Burns previously was a weekend morning anchor/reporter for ABC12 WJRT Flint, Michigan.

She is a native of Saginaw, Michigan.

Jennifer Reyna is leaving KPRC 2 after more than 13 years the station reported:

Jennifer Reyna is leaving KPRC 2.

In a statement, KPRC 2 General Manager Jerry Martin wrote, "After a long, good faith negotiation between both parties, we could not come to a new agreement with Jennifer. Her last day will be (Friday) on KPRC. Jennifer has been a part of the KPRC family for more than 15 years. We thank her for all her hard work as an anchor and traffic reporter as well as her dedication to community events. We wish her a great future."

KPRC legendary anchor Bill Balleza to retire

UPDATE

I did not tune in Friday morning, but my readers are telling me that Reyna was not on the air for her reported last day.

-------

Channel 2 Traffic/anchor Jennifer Reyna is hands down one of the most popular on air talents in Houston TV.

I think I have the timeline correct on this...Reyna got her intro to broadcasting by winning the Miss Rockwear 2003 title at Rock 101 KLOL which eventually led to her landing an on air gig with Outlaw Dave from 2004 to 2005.

Her first TV news job was with KABC Los Angeles where she worked behind the scenes for Eye on LA and Vista LA from 2005 to 2006.

She came back home to her hometown and joined KPRC in 2006 in the morning traffic role. In 2007, in addition to traffic duties on channel 2, she also performed the same role for 89.3 KSBJ from 2007 to 2013.

Reyna added anchor duties to her KPRC job in 2011.

Now, remember when I said she was popular? Well, I have chronicled a few instances of her fame over the years, including the Rate Reyna Twitter account where KPRC morning newscast fans featured her daily photo of her outfits.

Back in 2018, during a rare Houston winter storm, Reyna wore the same dress as KHOU 11's Chita Johnson and people seemed to get more excited about that than the cold weather that day.

Later that summer, the Houston Internet nearly melted down because Reyna changed the name of her Facebook page.

Now, fame can also have its dark side.

Back in 2013, The Houston Chronicle reported that a man was arrested for stalking Reyna. In addition to stalking her, Houston police said he drove his vehicle through the front of the old KPRC studios twice.

The bad times aside, Reyna used her popularity to support Crime Stoppers of Houston.

Courtney Zavala and Darby Douglas dealing with COVID-19

This week, KPRC 2 anchor Dominique Sachse revealed on her popular YouTube channel that she and her family, are all battling COVID-19, but she is not the only Houston media member to be dealing with the virus.

Also on channel 2, "Houston Life" host Courtney Zavala told co-host Derrick Shore and fill-in host/ morning news traffic anchor, Anavid Reyes, that her husband, Orlando, is having a hard time fighting COVID-19 (watch full video above):

"So we we're quarantining here at home. We're just praying for him to get over this hump.

And what's so weird is, you know, all of the symptoms that he's had, you guys, he's been hit so hard with just body aches and headaches. And he said even his toes hurt.

But actually on day eight is when he lost his taste and smell. And so it doesn't happen right in the beginning.

There's no rhyme or reason to this virus, but it's been a crazy, I don't know, ten days, nine days here at home."

Thankfully, Zavala and her sons have all tested negative.  The boys are now back in virtual home schooling for a third time.

Zavala thanks all of the Houston Life viewers that had been concerned about her whereabouts since she has been off the air taking care of Orlando.

Former KHOU 11 traffic anchor Darby Douglas battling COVID-19

Darby Douglas

KHOU 11 morning news viewers will remember former traffic anchor Darby Douglas, who revealed on his Facebook page in early January that he is also battling COVID.

"I have tested positive for Covid and am having a bit of a relapse currently," Douglas posted. "Body aches all over and tummy issues. At least the headaches are diminished."

He is continuing to offer updates on his page.

Douglas and channel 11 parted ways in 2018.  Now Douglas is a financial advisor.

Justina Latimer leaves KPRC 2

Justina Latimer has left KPRC 2 Houston and her morning traffic anchor job no longer exists as of September 2024, sources tell mikemcguff.com.

KPRC did not respond to my inquiry.

Jennifer Reyna returns to KHOU 11

I hear that Justin Stapleton has been filling in with traffic at times since he was promoted to the morning meteorologist position.  I'm not sure if he will continue to do this.

Earlier this summer, KPRC had buyouts for 12 staffers.

Latimer joined KPRC on Monday, May 1, 2023, taking over for Anavid Reyes, who left KPRC in April 2023.

Before Houston, Latimer worked for WSMV4 Nashville, Tennessee, where she has been a fill-in anchor/multimedia journalist (MMJ) since March 2021.

Prior to Nashville, Latimer worked as a reporter for WTEN 10 Albany, New York.

She arrived at KPRC with traffic anchor experience from DC News Now Washington, DC WDVM-TV (formerly WHAG).

She also worked as the West Virginia reporter for the statewide newscast “West Virginia Tonight.”

The Towson University graduate and National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) member interned with FOX 5 DC WTTG, WYPR 88.1 FM, and WBAL 11, the last two located in Baltimore.

Jennifer Reyna update 2020

UPDATE October 19, 2021

UPDATE MARCH 2020
Anavid Reyes joins KPRC 2 as morning traffic anchor

Former KPRC 2 morning traffic anchor Jennifer Reyna says "sleeping in has been amazing"

Within four hours, former KPRC 2 morning traffic anchor Jennifer Reyna's first 2020 update on Instagram had 11,069 views.

Wow! There are teams of people at the Houston TV stations trying to figure out how to get numbers like that on video.

"Miss you guys soooo much!! 😘❤️ A big thanks to each and every one of you who inquired or sent me well wishes. Sleeping in has been amazing. I’m human now, lol. 🦄🧍🏽‍♀️ Cheers to that and hope you are walking into 2020 fully energized! #TheWalk #WomanLikeMe 🎧 #LittleMix #JReyStyle"

Lots of questions have been coming in on what she's doing now? Why isn't JRey on TV?

First, I would guess that Reyna had at least a six month non-compete clause in her channel 2 contract. So that means at the time of this post, we are still in the middle of that. This type of clause prohibits her from appearing on any other Houston TV station during that time period.

People ask me where she's going?

 I have no clue.

But based on what I hear, you would think KHOU 11 would want to hire Reyna in some capacity...that is if she even wants to work in TV news anymore.
