Bryan Mays returns to KVUE Austin mornings

The old AM gang is getting back together at KVUE Austin as Bryan Mays returns to the Daybreak morning newscast with Yvonne Nava starting Monday, April 7, 2025.

UPDATE:  KC Sherman joins as morning meteorologist

Back in July 2020, it was a teary goodbye as Mays left for evenings, swapping roles with then KVUE anchor Mike Rush

Mays and Nava had anchored together in the mornings for eight years at that point. In the official return announcement, KVUE states that the duo was often the top-rated morning team in the market.

So what does that mean for current Nava morning co-anchor Rob Evans?

"Rob will continue his role in 2024, leading our newest venture—a solo anchor show on KVUE+ called Daybreak+," KVUE news director Travis Sattiewhite told mikemcguff.com. "He’ll also contribute content and support the Midday and 4 p.m. newscasts."

Now celebrating 20 years with KVUE, Mays joined the Central Texas station in 2004 as a weekend sports anchor.

Before returning to Austin, where he studied journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, Mays served as Sports Director at the former cable network News 9 San Antonio (now Spectrum News 1 Texas) and KTRE 9 Lufkin.

Happening down in Houston the same morning at TEGNA's sister station, KHOU 11, is the morning debut of Jacob Rascon.

Rob Evans joins KVUE Austin

Rob Evans is joining the KVUE Austin Daybreak team from THV11 KTHV Little Rock, Arkansas, June 21, 2021.

UPDATE APRIL 2025
He leaves the morning news for digital and afternoons

"The people who work and lead the newsroom at KVUE are world-class," Evans said on the KVUE website.  "I’m so excited to learn from them, while sitting next to the incredible Yvonne, working alongside Jason and reuniting with Mariel, whom I worked with in Arkansas."

As Evans noted, meteorologist Mariel Ruiz left the KTHV AM newscast in August of 2019 to join KVUE.

Evans will anchor with Ruiz, Yvonne Nava and Jason Mikell on the Central Texas morning newscast.

Prior to arriving in Little Rock in September 2016, Evans worked for ABC7 WZVN Fort Myers, Florida.  Before that he was at KOLR Springfield, Missouri.

The St. Louis native is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Based on his bios, Evans is a "handyman" and frequently found at hardware stores when he is not with his wife and two kids.

"What’s exciting about Rob is that he’s not just another anchor who sits at a desk, he’s a reporter at heart," KVUE President and General Manager Kristie Gonzales said on the station's website.  "He believes in getting out in the community, meeting people and telling the stories of Austin."

Evans takes over for Mike Rush who left KVUE a few months ago and has been a top clicked story on my blog for a long time.

KVUE's Mike Rush reminisces about Bellaire High School cheer days

As I reported last week, KVUE Austin shifted evening anchor Mike Rush to the morning show and morning anchor Bryan Mays to the evenings.

Rush is getting to know morning anchor Yvonne Nava and meteorologist Mariel Ruiz.

His revelation has a Houston connection, since Rush is originally from the Bayou City.

Turns out he was a Bellaire High School cheerleader.

The University of Houston graduate also interned at FOX 26 KRIV.

UPDATE MARCH 2021

Friday, July 04, 2025

Marc Mullins joins KVUE Austin

Marc Mullins is joining KVUE Austin as an evening anchor with Ashley Goudeau at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Quita Culpepper at 6 & 10 p.m. starting July 14, 2025.

"Very excited to be joining the amazing news team at KVUE in Austin, down in the heart of Texas," Mullins posted.  "I am also eager to learn everything I can about Austin in the same way I was hungry to learn the ins and outs of Indianapolis. After 12 1/2 great years in Indy, a new adventure awaits in the 'Live Music Capital of the World.'"

He takes over for Bryan Mays, who left evenings and returned to the morning "Daybreak" newscast with Yvonne Nava.

Most recently, Mullins anchored WRTV News at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Indianapolis from July 2017 to April 2025, when the E. W. Scripps Company eliminated his position after he worked there for more than 12 years. Before that, Mullins anchored "Good Morning Indiana" and WRTV News at Noon from December 2012 to July 2017.

Before joining WRTV, Mullins served as an anchor, reporter, and managing editor at KMTR in Eugene, Oregon, from 2005 to 2012.  This followed an earlier stint at KMTR from 2000 to 2003, where Mullins anchored multiple evening newscasts and coordinated the station’s internship program.

From 2003 to 2005, Mullins worked at WGCL/CBS46 Atlanta as a reporter and fill-in anchor.

The Emmy-award winning anchor/reporter began his career at KPAX in Missoula, Montana, in 1998, where he reported on the Crime & Justice beat.

A Connecticut native, Mullins earned his Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University in 1998.
