Charly Edsitty wins 2025 Gracie Award

Charly Edsitty won a 2025 Gracie Award, which for 50 years, has been "celebrating five decades of amplifying women’s voices, stories, and achievements in media."

Here is a portion of what the ABC13 KTRK Houston weekend morning anchor posted on social:

Edsitty won in the national category "Audio Podcast Host – News" for her work on "Reclaimed: The Lifeblood of Navajo Nation," via her work with ABC Audio. 

A Navajo Nation citizen, Edsitty chronicles the Navajo Nation’s generations-long water rights fight. This battle reaches all the way to Washington, DC, where a proposed bill, if passed, would create infrastructure that diverts water to Navajo communities.

In 2018, Edsitty joined ABC13 Houston as a multi-media journalist (MMJ) from 12News KPNX Phoenix, Arizona.  In 2021, she hosted the streaming show Our America: Indigenous and Urban.  Edsitty was promoted to KTRK weekend morning anchor in 2023.

Charly Edsitty joins abc13 KTRK

12 News KPNX Phoenix MMJ Charly Edsitty joins KTRK abc13 as a multi-media journalist (MMJ)

Charly Edsitty joins KTRK abc13 as a multi-media journalist (MMJ) from KPNX Phoenix, AZ.

Edsitty started her career at the Tegna owned station in 2013 as a planning producer. A year later, she was promoted to a reporting role in the station's Northern Arizona bureau.

According to her bio, Edsitty is a member of the Navajo tribe (from TeecNos Pos, Ariz. and Newcomb, NM). She started her journalism career working in print specializing in Native American issues including tribal politics, sports mascot controversies and identity issues.

The graduate of the Gannett Talent Development Program and the Freedom Forum's American Indian Journalism Institute is also a member of the Native American Journalists Association.

Edsitty is a graduate of Baylor University. Her internships included work with CBS News and The White House.

Charly Edsitty hosts ABC Audio podcast

In addition to her ABC13 Houston KTRK anchor/reporter work, Charly Edsitty is hosting ABC Audio’s Edward R. Murrow Award-winning podcast's new four-part series, "Reclaimed: The Lifeblood of Navajo Nation."

"‘Reclaimed: The Lifeblood of Navajo Nation’ takes the listener on a journey through a part of American history that is rarely known or talked about," said Edsitty. "Told through diverse Indigenous voices, Navajo citizens share their stories of determination to defend their tribal sovereignty, natural resources and future."

Edsitty, a Navajo Nation citizen and Houston journalist, chronicles the Navajo Nation’s generations-long fight for water rights. This battle has reached a critical turning point with a landmark bill in front of Congress that, if passed, would create critical infrastructure that diverts water to Navajo communities.

The podcast traces the roots of the Navajo struggle dating back to the 1800s when the federal government began its legacy of control over tribal lands and resources. Through Edsitty’s lens, "Reclaimed" reveals the emotional and far-reaching impact of this ongoing battle for water equity.

Charly Edsitty reports for "Disney Celebrates America" from Houston

Charly Edsitty, the ABC13 Houston KTRK weekend anchor, went national on the network as the United States celebrated 250 years of independence.

On July 4th, ABC aired "Disney Celebrates America," which ABC News president Almin Karamehmedovic called “the longest commercial broadcast in history.” It was a 24-hour programming marathon from 10 p.m. July 3rd to 11 p.m. July 4th.

The ABC broadcast featured live reports from across the country, with Houston and San Antonio represented. 

ABC News correspondent John Quiñones reported live from the San Antonio River Walk and Edsitty from Eleanor Tinsley Park ahead of Houston's Freedom Over Texas celebration, with a story about how Indigenous communities explain what the holiday means to them (WATCH BELOW).

Here is what Edsitty posted on social about the experience:

"It was an honor to work with ABC News to report this important story. 

Indigenous history goes back further than 250 years & we have fought so hard to keep our culture and traditions alive. 

I am so PROUD to represent my Native community on national television and do it from Houston — a beautiful city that celebrates diversity!! 

Thank you to every single person who contributed to this story, especially the people we interviewed! It was an incredible experience I will never forget. 

Edsitty, a Navajo Nation citizen, also won a 2025 Gracie Award for her work on "Reclaimed: The Lifeblood of Navajo Nation," via her work with ABC Audio. 

Kevin Roth adds a new family member

New abc13 KTRK meteorologist Kevin Roth's baby was born May 6th and the new dad couldn't be happier.

"Charley Kay Roth was born yesterday morning, mom and baby are both doing great," Roth tweeted. "It is without a doubt the most incredible feeling in the world."

Did you catch that name? Charley?

Well reporter Charly Edsitty noticed.

"Welcome to the world CHARLEY! It’s a GIRL." Edsitty tweeted. "I played a small role (I’m so honored!) in making sure this bundle of joy received the best name on the planet! 🙂 Charley, carry your name with pride! - Charly"

All joking aside, Roth did acknowledge on Instagram that Charly E. inspired Charley Roth!

"No lie you kinda sealed the deal on the name," Roth posted. "We already liked it, but seeing it and hearing it in use all the time at work (and thus KNOWING it was cute) was the clincher :)"

Speaking of babies, Roth showed up in Houston after abc13 KTRK weekend meteorologist Rachel Briers had her baby.

Charly Edsitty in “Our America: Indigenous and Urban”

Charly Edsitty is branching out from her abc13 KTRK morning reporter role to show us her roots.

In “Our America: Indigenous and Urban," available to stream Wednesday, November 17, 2021, Edsitty returns to her childhood home in the Navajo Nation Indian Reservation in the Four Corners region of the Southwest.

Here is how Edsitty described the experience on an Instagram post:

"This is a deeply personal project — I invited cameras to come home with me to the rez!  I’ve never done that before! I’m usually asking the questions, not answering them!

I grew up a Native kid just trying to find my place, trying to understand myself & exist in two completely different worlds.

I credit my culture & my grandparents with raising me to be tough and proud of who I am & where I come from."

2026 Houston Celebrity Dairy Goat Milking Contest

Houston media personalities gathered to take part in the annual Celebrity Goat Milking Contest at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where competitors race to squeeze out every last drop.

For 2026, David Smith, officer-in-charge of the Sheep and Goat Committee, claimed the Grand Champion title, winning both the traditional contest and the inaugural father-daughter round.

FOX 26 Houston KRIV Executive Producer of Local Programming Initiative Matt Horn finished just behind Smith, earning the Reserve Grand Champion title after a strong showing in the heats.

From what I could piece together on social media, other media participants included KHOU 11 reporters Anayeli Ruiz, Julissa Garza, Maria Aguilera, and Matt Dougherty. Other goat-milking celebrities included ABC13 KTRK weekend morning anchor Charly Edsitty, FOX 26 host Chelsea Edwards, KPRC 2 reporters Corley Peel and Rilwan Balogun, plus Houston Life host Derrick Shore. The rodeo also noted that KKBQ 93Q Country morning host Riggs took part in the competition.

So if your favorite Houston media celebrity wasn’t mentioned, I might lose my title as the G.O.A.T. of Houston media reporting!

KPRC 2 "Houston Life" co-host Tessa Barrera returned to host the event.

Goats used in the competition were provided by exhibitors participating in the Livestock Show.

The contest featured three heats, with competitors given 30 seconds to milk their goat. There was no practice round. Participants jumped straight into the competition, with the top two milkers from each heat advancing. The six finalists were then compared to determine the overall champion.

This year’s event also introduced a father-daughter milking round. Smith teamed up with his daughter, Ella, to win the inaugural round before going on to secure the overall championship.

Jeff Ehling leaves abc13 weekends for streaming

Jeff Ehling announced he is leaving the abc13 KTRK Houston weekend morning anchor desk with Charly Edsitty and heading to the weekday morning station streams on abc13+ as of January 2024.

This will be a big relief to many channel 13 viewers who were concerned about what was happening to Ehling when I posted the news in December 2023 that Brandon Hamilton was joining abc13 as a weekend morning anchor. As soon as I posted that news, my inbox and DMs started filling up with questions about Ehling.

All stations treat streaming with great importance these days as the linear television audiences decline.  This could be why 13 is moving one of its popular anchors to digital full-time to boost streaming numbers.  Also, Ehling is already hosting some of the morning streaming hours at 7am anyway. 

Here is what Ehling said on this morning's abc13 newscast:

"It is my last Sunday morning with all of you here on abc13 on the weekend. But don't worry, I'm not going anywhere. I'm still going to be here at abc13. 

I'll help you start your morning still, but moving Monday through Friday, that will be my new work shift. And you know, it's a change and I'm definitely excited about. 

As you all know, ABC 13 is live and local all morning long, and I'll be anchoring more of our morning newscasts at 7am. You'll see me Monday through Friday at seven and then again at 9am.  And I've also been given the opportunity to go back to my Action 13 Consumer roots. I'll be helping you protect your pocketbook now.

 I'm definitely going to miss the weekend crew. Charlie and Kevin are great friends of mine now, and I've certainly grown fond of all the people who work here and all of you at home who invite us into your busy lives, but I certainly am looking forward to this next chapter at abc13 working Monday through Friday."

This move fills the vacancy left by Jonathan Bruce, who moved from digital anchor to evenings after Chauncy Glover left abc13 for KCBS.

And as he noted, Ehling is also going back to his Action 13 consumer reporting...guessing KTRK doesn't want Amy Davis at KPRC 2 to get all of that notoriety with her consumer investigations.

Ehling joined KTRK in 2000 after working at Florida stations such as WPTV 5 West Palm Beach and WCTV Tallahassee.  He previously worked for Georgia stations 41NBC News WMGT Macon and WVGA Valdosta.
