Trason Bragg promoted to KHOU 11 Houston noon anchor

Trason Bragg has been announced as the new KHOU 11 Houston noon anchor multiple sources confirm to mikemcguff.com, so get your resumes ready, as his weekend morning position is likely open.

We now have the puzzle pieces assembled to understand the aftermath of the tectonic shift made at Channel 11 after Shern-Min Chow's retirement!

With Bragg taking Chow's midday anchoring chair, that completes the full picture, since we learned that Brheanna Boudreaux was returning to Houston and taking the legendary anchor's 4pm role.

This means that Cheryl Mercedes, who has been doing great weekday fill-in work, is returning to weekend evenings.

And I should take the time to acknowledge that Marcelino Benito hasn't co-anchored with Mercedes in like a year. So this proves to my readers who think I know everything that I really do live up to the "dunderpate" branding in my own blog header since I missed this one. See, I'm just good at faking competence at times. That's how I made it 15 years in the TV biz.  Fake it until you sorta make it.

He is busy racking up journalism awards for his reporting.  While I was on the blog break, Benito won for best reporter at the Texas Broadcast News Awards. Congrats.

Bragg joined KHOU as weekend morning anchor in 2024, taking over for Lauren Talarico. He came from Dallas-Fort Worth, where he worked for the CBS Local News Innovation Lab based at CBS News Texas KTVT.

Do you think when World Cup fans lifted Bragg recently, that they were really celebrating his upcoming promotion?

Trason Bragg joins KHOU 11 Houston

Trason Bragg is joining KHOU 11 Houston as a weekend morning anchor after working for the CBS Local News Innovation Lab out of the now-named CBS News Texas KTVT in Dallas-Fort Worth, where he was an anchor/reporter for CBS-owned and operated stations nationwide.

Bragg takes over for Lauren Talarico, who left in June 2023.

I am back from my 2024 Washington, DC, work and will return to regular blogging.  Let the Houston and Texas media news flow again! Now, when I'm off, I can replace the lack of blog posts with my documentary, "Runaway Radio."

My DFW readers may recall seeing Bragg on "CBS News DFW Now on TXA21."  And for those in Houston, you'll likely recognize Collin Myers, a meteorologist Bragg worked with starting in 2022 when the news division was launched.

For three years, Bragg was a reporter and sports anchor/reporter for CBS 46 WGCL (now called Atlanta News First).

He got his television news start with KRGV 5 Rio Grande Valley as a reporter in 2017.

Bragg might look familiar to television viewers outside of Texas and Georgia since he appeared in season three of BET’s reality show Baldwin Hills. According to IMDB, he was also featured in Whiz Kids (2013) and Almost Famous: The Series (2012).

TRIVIA TIME
Speaking of reality shows and local TV talent, which former Texas TV meteorologist appeared on CBS' Big Brother?

But wait, there's more.

Sports fans in California might recognize Bragg's name from when he played football for UCLA.

Meanwhile, Adam Bennett is leaving KHOU 11 for KVUE Austin.

Here is what Kless posted on Facebook:

"Houston, here we go!

Excited to announce I’ll be starting at KHOU 11 News on July 10.

I am so hyped and excited to be joining the best station in Texas! I’m honored to get this opportunity to join some amazing journalists who do great work every day.

I couldn’t be more excited to work and live in such a great, diverse city where we want to stay for a long time.

I married a Houston native and have already learned to appreciate some things about this city, but I can’t wait to learn all about what H-Town has to offer!"

Clearly a company man, Kless joined KENS 5 in June 2021 from sister-station First Coast News WTLV-WJXX in Jacksonville, Florida.

Before that, he was with TEGNA sister-station 12News Now - KBMT and KJAC Beaumont.

Kless is a University of Central Florid grad (no affiliation with TEGNA that I am aware of).

As he mentioned on Facebook, Kless married his wife, Haley, on October 22, 2022 in Canyon Lake, TX. Congrats!

Lauren Talarico to leave KHOU 11 Houston

Lauren Talarico

Lauren Talarico announced that she's leaving her KHOU 11 weekend morning anchor/reporting job and Houston on June 21, 2023.

UPDATE MAY 2024
Trason Bragg joins KHOU 11 Houston

UPDATE
WATCH: Lauren Talarico signs off KHOU 11 weekend mornings

Here is a portion of what Talarico posted on social:

"This career has given me so much...passion, focus, meaning. Some of the stories I’ve been trusted to tell have broken my heart and kept me up at night, while others have filled me with so much hope seeing the love that we can have for one another.

The one thing this job can’t give me is my family. I’m leaving KHOU to move closer to them. I miss them and want my children to have the joy of those daily interactions.

This was not an easy decision. It took months of soul searching and tears to decide. Walking into Liz’s office (my news director) to deliver that news was so hard and I’ll never forget the kindness and support she showed to me.

This job is important. Ethical journalists are important. KHOU is special. The way we tell stories is special. The empathy and compassion that is considered in every story we tell is special. The way we treat each other in this newsroom is special. It’s been an honor to work alongside you all."

Weekend anchor Cheryl Mercedes posts that Talarico is moving back to New York.

The award-winning journalist recently changed her reporting schedule from nights to days last January.

In January 2020, Talarico and then meteorologist Addison Green (now Kim Castro) launched the new KHOU Sunday morning newscast.  When Brandi Smith became the KHOU 11 digital anchor and left the Saturday morning anchor gig open, Talarico took those duties to anchor both weekend mornings.

And speaking of Castro, the meteorologist and Talarico post expertly choreographed dance moves every weekend in the empty 5718 Westheimer dance studio.

More importantly while in Houston, Talarico and husband Charlie Briffitt welcomed children Ella Annmarie in 2017 and Jack in 2020 to the family. As an author of children's book Teatime with Tigers, Talarico can read her own book to the kiddos!

Talarico joined KHOU 11 in July 2014 from WLTX News19 Columbia, South Carolina where she was the morning anchor.

When Talarico was hired at channel 11, I got excited by her last name, because it sounded like the actual last name of Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler. Both are from New York, so I had to ask were they related, because I Don't Want to Miss a Thing.

"Nope! Not related to Steven 'Talerico,'" Talarico told me with an LOL. "I'm surprised you know that, you must be a fan. We spell our names differently. He uses an 'e' as the 4th letter and mine in an 'a'. It would be pretty cool if I were though."

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville grad also worked for an Academy-Award winning company in London.

Houston television viewers tell me they can't believe how many personnel changes there have been in local news over the last years, but weekend mornings have been fairly stable as of late. That started changing in 2023, when Cathy Hernandez and Brittany Jeffers took over weekend mornings on KPRC 2 and Erica Simon recently left the shift at abc13 KTRK.

(Thanks Shad!)

Lauren Talarico makes KHOU 11 Houston changes

Lauren Talarico

Lauren Talarico will still be anchoring weekend mornings for KHOU 11 Houston, but is moving from reporting at nights during the week to the day shift.

UPDATE JUNE 2023
Lauren Talarico to leave KHOU 11 Houston

"Balancing motherhood and a career is hard, as I know, so many of you understand. As my children get older working nights has become harder to balance for my family.

I often feel exhausted, guilty for missing bedtime, and like I am moving nonstop from dawn to dusk with very little time to just breathe.

It started taking a real toll on my body and mind.

So, I asked my name my new[s] director if she consider changing my schedule and she agreed. She barely took a beat. She told me she understood that both career and family are important.

I felt incredibly lucky. I wish more people had that experience.

So, from now on, you’ll see me on the dayshift! Here’s to rush-hour and doing what I love during three shows in a row, and then, hopefully most nights, being able to tuck my children into bed."

Talarico joined KHOU in 2014 from News19 WLTX Columbia, South Carolina.
