Jose Grinan honored by Houston Association of Black Journalists

FOX 26 KRIV morning anchor Jose Grinan honored at 2019 Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ) Media Masquerade Ball

FOX 26 KRIV morning anchor Jose Grinan was honored by the Houston Association of Black Journalists Saturday night at its 2019 Media Masquerade Ball themed: “Eyes Wide Open, Mouths Never Shut" held at the Groovey Grill Mansion in Historic Third Ward.

Grinan was honored for his commitment to excellence in Houston media, leadership and community support.

The KRIV anchor has been with the FOX Television Station since 1993.

Before Houston, Grinan was an anchor/reporter for KDFW in Dallas - Fort Worth in the early 90s. In fact his bio says he was one of the first reporters on the scene at the Branch Davidian siege in Waco, Texas. He also worked as a correspondent and host for Crime Watch Tonight and as a freelance correspondent for CNN.

From 1984 until 1990, Grinan worked for WTVJ Miami. Before that he worked as an anchor for the Satellite News Channel from 1982 to 1983.

Grinan was at Miami's WCKT (now WSVN) from 1978 to 1982.

He got his start at KTSM AM-FM-TV El Paso in 1975 as a reporter and weekend anchor.

As I've written here before, Grinan also appeared in the 1972 movie The Daredevil with George Montgomery.

Grinan attended the University of South Florida.

Other Houston journalists who received special recognition included honorees include Melanie Lawson, Isiah Carey, Jonathan Martin, Deborah Duncan, Khambrel Marshall, Brandon Walker, Shannon Lanier, Sharron Melton, Phyllis Bailey, Kathy Sapp, Jerome Solomon and Charles Hudson.

Also present was GRAMMY-nominated rapper and VH1 reality star YoYo.

HABJ is a nonprofit organization of media professionals from the Houston area with members in every facet of print and broadcast media. Part of HABJ’s mission is to provide professional development, honor excellence in journalism, cultivate young journalists and ensure accurate coverage of the minority community. Consistent with its mission, HABJ provides scholarships, future workforce development and summer training opportunities for college students majoring in communications. Additionally, HABJ presents community outreach programs, seminars and town hall forums free for community groups and communication professionals.

Casey Curry does weather on FOX 26 KRIV

The Houston TV tour continues for Casey Curry!

UPDATE
Where is Casey Curry going to work?

Sunday I broke the news that meteorologist Casey Curry was no longer working for abc13 KTRK.

Monday, Curry exclusively told mikemcguff.com about her appearance on KPRC 2's Houston Life.

Wednesday at noon, she was with anchor Jose Grinan on FOX 26 KRIV doing the weather segment.

Where will this Houston TV tour continue next? I guess every station wants a chance to woo Curry.

Any radio stations interested? The Chronicle?

By the way, anyone know where Lisa Vaughn is?

Stephen Morgan joins FOX 26 KRIV

Anchor/reporter Stephen Morgan joins FOX 26

Covering Houston TV has become like the The Fast and the Furious. Instead of cars zooming back and forth, replace that with anchors and reporters coming and going.

UPDATE 2021
Stephen Morgan joins FOX Weather

Now I've never actually seen any of the The Fast and the Furious movies, and that's including the original Roger Corman version from 1955.

But the latest franchise is so popular that one of its movie stars is considering a run for president.

Anything is possible these days.

"Make America Tough Again" - President The Rock.

Where was I?

Oh yeah, talking about how fast Houston TV talent arrive and exit these days.

After having to fall on the sword for missing Deneige Broom coming to FOX 26 KRIV, I'm now just hanging out on the FOX owned and operated station's bios page.

And it's already paid off!

Heck, at the time of this posting, new FOX 26 reporter Stephen Morgan has his bio up with no text! It's just his picture.

Let me fill you in on the rest.

Morgan comes to Houston from KRBK 49 Springfield, Missouri where he has been an anchor/reporter since 2013 according to his LinkedIn profile.

He has a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Meteorology from Saint Louis University.

That's all I got.

McGuff...mic drop.

By the way, for those asking where FOX 26 morning anchor Jose Grinan is, he posted a video saying he's back at work after being gone for two weeks.

Hopefully you saw my update last Friday when I blogged FOX 26 meteorologist Lisa Vaughn announced she is coming back to work.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 25, 2017
Lisa Vaughn returns to FOX 26 KRIV

UPDATE JULY 21, 2017
Lisa Vaughn took to Instagram stories and posted the following message:

"Thank you for asking peeps. I will be back to work in August. much love, Lisa."

Where is FOX 26 meteorologist Lisa Vaughn?

FOX 26 meteorologist Lisa Vaughn

When certain FOX 26 personalities go missing there is a Houston TV viewer APB put out.

I'm beginning to think some KRIV viewers get together and form search parties. They get rescue Collies and play them recordings of the anchor or weather person's voice.

"Lassie...where is [fill in FOX 26 talent name]? Go find her girl..."

via GIPHY

I've already had headlines like Where is FOX 26's Mike Iscovitz? and Where is Jose Grinan of FOX 26?

The latest search party has formed for meteorologist Lisa Vaughn. Viewers are hitting me up, asking where is Lisa? Is she still at KRIV?

Call off the search parties and give Lassie a bowl of water...it's really hot in Houston these days after all...because I have the answer.

A rep with FOX Television Station was nice enough to respond to my questions during the holiday to tell me Vaughn, "didn't leave the station."

That is all I know right now.

Is Vaughn taking leave to work on a fall fashion line since she's been getting press for her dress making?

Is she on vacation?

I don't know.

What I do know is that I'm going to stop blogging for a while. Don't worry, it won't be as long as my spring break. There are too many things going on in the Houston media that no one is talking about yet that I have to tell you about!

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 25, 2017
Lisa Vaughn returns to FOX 26 KRIV

Rashi Vats has a baby

Rashi Vats and Daniel Gotera

Daniel Gotera is going to be one busy dude in February. That's because the KHOU 11 sports reporter will be covering the Super Bowl, oh...which happens to be in Houston in 2017, then he and his wife are having a baby!

You may have heard of his wife, FOX 26 KRIV reporter Rashi Vats, who made the big announcement today on her station. After the on-air announcement, anchor Melissa Wilson and Vats appeared to be shedding tears of joy.

What if there had been a battle between channel 26 and channel 11 to see who could get the scoop first?! I'd like to see that Proof of Performance. In actuality, anchor Jose Grinan apparently almost spilled the beans early on Facebook! See, all journalists want to be first with the breaking news.

The mom to be is looking for advice from viewers and co-workers.

"When I went to get my registry done, I had no clue what I was doing," confessed Vats on Facebook Live (embedded below).

Trust me, I know the feeling.

The TV power couple are having a boy. No name has been chosen.

Jose Grinan...why aren't you on FOX 26?

Where has FOX 26 KRIV morning anchor Jose Grinan been?

Jose Grinan

I've been getting lots of questions on the whereabouts of one FOX 26 KRIV morning anchor Jose Grinan who has been absent from Houston TV since July.

Well, a FOX Television Stations rep tells me he is recuperating from back surgery.

I'm told Grinan is recovering well.

He's on target to return to the FOX 26 morning news in early October.

Poor Grinan had to go through neck vertebra surgery in 2014. He suffered from a stroke in 2010.

Here's to a speedy recovery for our own Houston Daredevil anchor.

UPDATE 10/10/2016
Jose Grinan returns to FOX 26 KRIV after back surgery.

So happy to be back with my morning colleagues... and You!

FOX 26's Michelle Merhar announces baby #3

Viewers who were asking on Facebook were right, FOX 26 anchor & Traffic Authority Michelle Merhar is expecting

Michelle Merhar
Michelle Merhar
Instead of just scripts and coffee, this morning on the FOX 26 KRIV news set, there was a teddy bear, pickles, cookies, chips and baby bottles!

The secret is out, anchor and Traffic Authority Michelle Merhar is pregnant with baby numero three.

"We don't know the gender yet, I don't know if we are going to find out yet, I don't know I kinda want to be surprised," an excited Merhar said.

Baby #3 arrives in July to meet Merhar's other kids Abby, 2, and James, 18 months.

"Hoo-wee you are going to have your hands full," added co-anchor Tom Zizka.

"We're doing the no sleep thing all at once, we're trying to knock it all out," replied Merhar.

I don't even really need to go into the current Houston TV baby wave we're in again. As you can tell from the links below, I'm going to busy in the next few months with birth announcements. But I can confidently say this, I will be nowhere as busy as the folks having kids!

Personally I am out of the baby phase of my life. It is now the beginning of the driving one here, one there, this birthday party, that birthday party, this sports activity, that sports activity. Get this, in the month of January we had birthday parties each Saturday and Sunday of the last two weeks.

FOX 26 KRIV meteorologist Mike Iscovitz is forecasting a return

UPDATE 10/23/2014
Mike Iscovitz is back on FOX 26 KRIV today.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike Iscovitz
Mike Iscovitz
FOX 26 KRIV morning meteorologist Mike Iscovitz must feel good job security right now.

He hasn't been on the air in weeks and his viewers are concerned about his whereabouts.

FOX Houston viewers are hitting Iscovitz up on Facebook, Twitter and asking me in attempts to find out if he is OK.

While he didn't get back to me directly, he did answer a viewer on Twitter concerning his MIA status saying, "Thanks. I'm having serious low back issues and a couple of other things too. I'll be back soon."

Just so you know, Iscovitz is my father-in-law's favorite meteorologist. Hopefully this makes him feel better too.

Earlier this year, FOX 26 KRIV anchor Jose Grinan was also off the air after neck vertebra surgery.

Here's to good health for the FOX Houston news team!
