Sherry Williams announces departure from KHOU 11

KHOU 11 reporter/anchor Sherry Williams is leaving the TEGNA station this Friday.

The Houston CBS affiliate started a campaign to help as many Hurricane Harvey victims get their homes livable as possible. Williams is spending her last week covering these forgotten folks.

She tells me she did not make this decision to leave lightly.

"Channel 11 is a unique place where, like so many before me, I have formed many strong bonds with my peers," Williams told mikemcguff.com. "I will miss everyone A LOT! And I will miss 'being with' all the great people who tune in to watch!"

Williams grew up in Houston's Third Ward and attended Turner Elementary, Lanier Junior High and Lamar High School. She earned her journalism degree at Texas A&M - even started working at Bryan radio station, WTAW, while still in school as an Aggie.

Williams went on to work in Dallas, Detroit and as a correspondent for Black Entertainment Television.

She returned to Houston to work as a reporter for FOX 26 KRIV.

Later, she anchored CW 39's KIAH's (then KHWB) return to local news with Alan Hemberger.

She then joined KHOU.

"I am very grateful for the 9 years I have spent being part of the KHOU family," Williams told me.

As someone who runs marathon, Williams founded the KHOU 11 Bike Team in 2010 which is made up of co-workers and friends who shared a desire to complete the 180-mile MS 150.

What I did not realize until reading her bio is that Williams is married to her college sweetheart, Rube Williams, Jr., Ph.D. Perfect for Houston, Dr. Williams is a real life rocket scientist!

Former KHOU 11 anchor/reporter Sherry Williams has been selected as press secretary for the Houston Independent School District

I told you this week that KHOU 11 anchor/reporter Sherry Williams was leaving. Now we know her new career...HISD press secretary.

Former KTRK abc13 MMJ Tracy Clemons recently left the HISD press office to join FOX8 WGHP in Greensboro/High Point/Winston-Salem.

Aug. 31, 2018 – Sherry Williams has been selected as press secretary for the Houston Independent School District.

Williams, an Emmy-winning journalist whose career spans three decades, joins HISD from Houston’s KHOU 11 news team. She previously anchored the 9 p.m. news at CW 39 and reported for Fox 26 Houston. She also has worked in broadcast markets in Dallas, Detroit, and Bryan-College Station.

Williams grew up in Houston’s Third Ward near the Texas Southern University campus and attended HISD’s Turner Elementary School, Lanier Middle School and Lamar High School.

“I am thrilled and eager to start this new endeavor with the Houston Independent School District Communications team,” Williams said. “I look forward to serving the school district that helped me immensely to become the person I am today.”

Williams attended Texas A&M University in College Station, where she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism. She began her broadcast career as a reporter and anchor at Bryan radio station, WTAW, while she was still in college.

“Sherry brings a wealth of media experience into her new role,” said HISD Chief Communications Officer Rebecca Suarez. “She is a gifted storyteller, and she is going to be an incredible asset to our team.”

In addition to her Emmy Award, Williams also has won awards from the Associated Press, the Houston Press Club, the Dallas Press Club and United Press International.

Williams will begin her new role Thursday, Sept. 13.

KHOU 11's Sherry Williams leaves 4:30am for 4pm; to anchor Saturday mornings too

Some more anchor changes at KHOU 11 are on the way. First Ron Trevino returned to mornings, an anchor slot opened on the weekends, and then Lucy Noland went to anchor the 6pm show at KNBC 4.

Now I have more anchor moves for you, some that relate to what I've already mentioned.

On this morning's KHOU 11 4:30am newscast, anchor Sherry Williams said goodbye. But don't worry, she'll still be on KHOU 11. Williams will move her on air appearance 12 hours or so to the new KHOU 11 News at 4 newscast as a reporter (the new show starts this coming Monday by the way replacing Oprah). That newscast, as you might remember, will be anchored by Len Cannon and meteorologist Chita Johnson will do the weather.

But that's not all! Williams will also anchor the KHOU 11 Saturday morning newscast starting in September. That means the before mentioned Ron Trevino and co-anchor Christine Haas will jump in the anchor chairs at 4:30am to replace Williams' current position.

She said she will miss her "early risers" but is excited to be on the new show.

Williams is of course well known in the Houston TV market. Before KHOU 11, she was one of the original main anchors at KIAH 39, back when the station had decent ratings and NewsFix was not on the radar. Previous to that she worked as a reporter at Fox 26 KRIV.

I hear KHOU 11's Great Day Houston executive producer Peggy Murphy has left the station. Sure enough, her bio was removed from the Great Day bios page. KHOU offered no comment.

Former Channel 39 anchor Sherry Williams returns to TV?

The Insite hears rumors that former KHCW CW 39 anchor KIAH Channel 39 anchor Sherry Williams could be coming back to Houston television. Good for her. I'll take a guess and say Fox 26 KRIV?

Channel 39 or whatever it calls itself these days is a great lesson for broadcasters.  If you have good call letters like KHTV don't dump them for call letters like KHCW to reflect your network.  The good ones like KHTV will probably be snapped up by the time you want to go back so you have to go with something like KIAH.  It is amusing to hear how much people in broadcasting complain about those new calls. What about 39 Gold?

KHOU 11 has video server crash; replaces morning news with CBS

KHOU 11 learns old Beta SP tapes were more reliable

During a blizzard, you'd expect the TV stations in the affected areas to have technical trouble, but Saturday morning, it was a Houston station that got attacked by gremlins.

KHOU 11's Saturday morning news was taken down by the old computerized newsroom thing. Anchor Sherry Williams took to Facebook to explain the problem.

"All dressed up with no place to go," Williams wrote. "Our video player system crashed at #KHOU this morning. We couldn't do our newscast. So sorry peeps! We are fixing the problem and we will see you on air later today!"

Ahhh, technology...

Viewer reports say the CBS national feed took the local news slot.

This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened over at channel 11. In September 2014, I wrote how CBS Evening News took the place of KHOU's 6pm news.

Alan Hemberger has died

Houston, San Antonio and Austin TV anchor Alan Hemberger has died

KHOU 11 anchor Sherry Williams just tweeted the news that former Houston anchor Alan Hemberger has died.

Friend Mason Turner told me he had just talked with Hemberger Saturday evening about the Red Sox win.

"When his sons couldn't reach him [Sunday], they had a welfare check made and that's when his body was discovered," Turner told me.

The Houston Chronicle said the anchor, 65, died of an apparent heart attack.

Hemberger worked at KTRK through the 90s as its Live at 5 anchor with Melanie Lawson, a brief stint at KEYE Austin weekends and then last at KIAH 39 (with Sherry Williams) as the main anchor. The Houston Press awarded him best local TV anchor while at KHWB (now KIAH). He also worked at Entertainment Tonight as Alan Arthur and KMOL San Antonio (now WOAI).

Alan Hemberger

The last time I talked with Hemberger was almost a year ago. He was retired in Laguna, California and doing a weekly radio show at 93.5 KXRN a non-commercial station. His show was called 'The Laguna Beach Blues Boy.'

"The Pacific Coast Highway is out one window, the ocean out the other," Hemberger told me last November. "I'm returning to my first love and roots. Hope to do some high school play by play too."

As I've written before, Hemberger was very nice to me when I interned at KTRK in the mid 1990s. I never forgot that and I think it is an important lesson for today's broadcasters.

He will be missed.

Alan earned a Bachelor's Degree in Speech from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. He began his career in television at KFDA-TV in Amarillo as News/Public Affairs Director and the 6pm & 10pm anchor.

Alan went on to co-anchor with Dixie Whatley on "Entertainment This Week" for Paramount Television in Hollywood, California. For two years he covered Hollywood movie premieres, and high profile events for "Entertainment Tonight," including the Oscars, the Emmys, and the Grammy awards programs.

Alan came to Houston in 1989 as the midday and 5pm news anchor at ABC's KTRK-TV. For 9 years, he anchored for KTRK-TV's midday news and Live at Five. While at Channel 13, Alan covered many high profile news events including the Luby's mass murder, the ATF raid on the Branch Davidian Compound, US forces in Somalia and the Oklahoma City Bombing.

Alan joins 39 News from the CBS affiliate KEYE-TV in Austin, Texas where he was the primary weekend anchor.

Former WFAA 8 investigative reporter Brett Shipp is hoping to reinvent his wheelhouse after leaving the Dallas-based station late last year to run unsuccessfully for Congress.

WFAA 8 Sports broadcaster Dale Hansen, ‘a fat, white guy in a deep red state,’ is an unlikely liberal hero.

After joining Dallas-based Fox4 in June to replace Jenny Anchondo as the weekend Good Day anchor, Hanna Battah has been bumped up to weekday editions of the show.

Ruben Galvan joins KHOU 11

Former KPRC 2 features reporter Ruben Galvan joins KHOU 11

Former KPRC 2 morning feature reporter Ruben Galvan is returning to Houston, but this time at KHOU 11's H-Town Rush.

"I had the best experience and built some great, long-lasting friendships," Galvan told Chron.com's Marcy de Luna. "It's like a homecoming for me."

Multiple sources told me this is not the first time Galvan has been talking with another Houston TV station after his channel 2 departure.

Galvan left KPRC after two and a half years in 2016.

Post Houston, Galvan returned to his former television station XETV San Diego 6 News (CW affiliate) as a freelance anchor/reporter. He then moved to Los Angeles to work for a science website.

The Spring Branch's Northbrook High School and the University of Houston grad previously worked at KXXV Waco, Temple, Killeen.

Galvan takes over the spot Sherry Williams left in August 2018 for a new career with HISD.

KHCW 39 changes and WFAA 8 is back

Faces change on Channel 39 newscast
Sherry Williams and Alan Hemberger will be replaced by Steve Simon and Mia Gradney as anchors of KHCW's (Channel 39) 9 p.m. newscast, and news director Joe Nolan has resigned, effective June 27, three days before the station expands its nightly newscast from 30 minutes to an hour.

WFAA back on track in booming Dallas-Fort Worth
After having lost its grip on the Dallas-Fort Worth ratings crown in the last two years, Belo's WFAA has come storming back. The ABC affiliate had a blockbuster May sweeps, winning morning, evening and late news, and grabbing total day ratings, too.

REVIEW: KHOU 11 News at 4 kicks off with strong start and different approach

Do you think Belo Houston purposely launched KHOU 11 News at 4 on August 1st, the same day MTV launched in 1981? Well, one was a lot more revolutionary at the time of launch and that was the network formerly known as Music Television 30 years ago. KHOU 11 News at 4 however had a solid launch, but as a commenter on this blog said, "it seems just like any other newscast!" Well except for the part that same commenter claimed PETA would be mad at, but more on that later.

The third 4pm entrant to the Houston news scene kicked off with four live reporter talkbacks/vosots in a row. Anchor Len Cannon tossed to Tiffany Craig, Leigh Frillici, Kevin Reece and even CBS correspondent
Danielle Nottingham for good measure. (What I want to know is...are KHOU reporters angry because they lost an hour to work on stories they previously had all to themselves because the other big two stations have 4pm newscasts? The sales department would probably tell them to get over it though. News makes more money for a station than syndicated shows generally.)

Then the half hour newscast set out to set itself apart from the competition with a "Len at Work" segment. You guessed it, anchor Len Cannon goes and shoots a story at someone's place of employment and gets taped doing their job. Monday he was a firefighter (you can email the station and give suggestions - dominatrix anyone?). Another segment that pushes out the usual national and state news in the back half of the show was "The Scoop." Reporter Courtney Zubowski talked about Restaurant Week at a Midtown sushi joint. What surprised me was she came back a second time after a commercial break with the chef to give us a quick sushi demo. That ran till the end of the show. KTRK 13 has a segment in its 4pm show like this called Your Hometown Live.

Then there is the part many of my readers are eagerly awaiting... meteorologists Chita Jonhnson's weathercasts. As a commenter on my blog put it, "Chita Johnson is hot like the weather! Dang..." Clearly she is a weapon that KHOU knows will differentiate itself at this time of day from the other stations. Johnson does have a lot of personality and even co-anchors the show with Cannon in the lighter parts. The new 4pm duo also approaches the small talk more like a morning show.

Missing from the debut show was anchor Sherry Williams who I told you Friday was promised to be on the new show. Oh well, she will have plenty of opportunities to be on it in the future I'm sure.

KHOU clearly threw a lot of resources at its 4pm news debut. It better. There are two other entrenched 4pm newscasts in Houston that have been on since the 1990s (KPRC 2) and 2001 (KTRK 13). And what a reader said on my blog shows there is some strong loyalty out there, "I will NEVER stop watching Erik (Barajas) on KTRK!" Someone get a restraining order or a Nielsen Local People Meters (LPM)...I'm not sure which!

As someone who has helped bring on a new 4pm show in this town, I'm sure what we saw Monday will only be a starting point. Expect changes. You might find this post a year from now and fondly recall "The Scoop" segment or "Len at Work" because they could be gone by that point. Who knows? At least the station is trying something different...even if these segments aren't exactly groundbreaking in TV terms (Does KHOU need an Imaginator?).

Now to the promised PETA anger I mentioned earlier. It was after this story concerning a water moccasin windshield surfing on a moving car that Cannon said something like, "hopefully someone ran right over that thing." A commenter here said "As a PETA member, I'm offended..." You learn quickly in a mass medium like TV, you can't please everyone. Heck, the next commenter said, "Anythng that annoys PETA is a-okay, #1 in my book."

KHOU 11 announces new early morning newscast at 4:30am

I thought other television stations in Houston were expanding morning newscasts. Now it seems almost all of them are doing it if you listen on the streets. Here is Channel 11 KHOU's 4:30am official announcement:

Beginning Labor Day, September 7, KHOU-TV/DT Channel 11 will break new ground with Houston’s first 4:30 am newscast called " 11 News First Look." The program will be anchored by Sherry Williams, currently a reporter for "11 News This Morning," along with meteorologist David Paul. READ THE REST

KTRK 13's Andy Cerota going to KPRC 2?

KPRC 2 lands Andy Cerota from KTRK 13

I hear KTRK 13 reporter Andy Cerota's contract is up and he is most likely moving on from the Houston ABC owned station. But the talk does not stop there.

The BIG rumor is that Cerota could end up behind the anchor desk down the freeway at KPRC 2.

I contacted Cerota's agent Rick Ramage of N.S. Bienstock, Inc. about this potential "move across the street" as they say. Ramage told me Andy is currently weighing several job offers, but it is his policy to not comment on client contract negotiations.

Cerota has been at channel 13 since 2003. According to his bio, Cerota came to Houston from Los Angeles TV. Before that, he worked in Phoenix, Austin and Abilene. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado and is originally from New York. One thing in his bio that sticks out is Cerota freelanced for NBC News and filed reports for The Geraldo Rivera Show.

In recent years it has not been common for Houston talent to jump from one local station to another but is has happened (much more common for behind the scenes folks as demonstrated on this blog).

Here are some names that are currently on Houston TV that come to mind though:

KHOU 11's Shern-Min Chow has also worked at KTRK and KPRC.
KHOU 11's Jeff McShan used to be a sports reporter at KTRK.
KTRK 13's Christi Myers worked for KPRC and KHOU.
Katishia Cosley has moved between KTRK and KIAH 39.

KHOU 11's Vicente Arenas used to work at KTRK.
KHOU 11's Sherry Williams used to work at KIAH.
KHOU 11's Gene Norman used to work at KTRK.
KPRC 2's Frank Billingsley used to work at KTRK
Fox 26 KRIV's Ford Atkinson used to work at KPRC.
Fox 26 KRIV's Emily Akin used to work at KPRC.

Cerota declined to comment for this post.

Hope you're not in a post-Valentine's candy slump this Monday morning, so here is a sweet TV related story from this past heart filled weekend.

KHOU 11 anchor Sherry Williams was doing a story on people roping down the side of METRO's HQ for charity and uncovered this lovely gem:

Metro staff member Margaret O’Brien Molina wore a wedding dress as she rappelled to help raise money for The H.E.A.R.T. Program.

"I put it on Facebook. I said, 'If I can raise $500, I'll wear a wedding gown and $1000, I'll wear a wedding gown with the veil,’” Molina said.

In a couple of months, she will wear another dress when she walks down the aisle with former Houston TV personality Don Nelson.

"One that's a little different will be worn for real, coming at the end of April. We're going to get married,” Nelson said happily.

Nelson and Molina first met while working together on "Good Morning Houston." And now years later there is a love connection and an upcoming marriage!

What did I do with my wife this weekend? The kids went to the grandparents and we watched Deadpool. Now that is romantic. And I will add Ryan Reynolds' best movie ever.
