Where is Greg Bailey on abc13 KTRK?

UPDATE OCTOBER 08, 2018
Greg Bailey returns to KTRK...again

UPDATE 8-20-2018
Greg Bailey posts on Facebook he is back at abc13 KTRK after his back issues.

Greg Bailey explains his absence from abc13 KTRK sports desk

Last week when I was away, I received an email asking me about the whereabouts of abc13 KTRK sports director Greg Bailey.

Well, Bailey took to social media to explain why he has been missing from the airwaves of channel 13.

I can't begin to tell you how much it means that you've been asking about me during my absence. It's been a tough few weeks. Who knew a bad back could turn into such a mess? But the good news far outweighs the bad. We're confident there's a medical solution within reach. And this is nothing compared to what so many deal with on a daily basis. I've missed my work, but I've missed my friends at ABC-13 much more. I look forward to joining you again soon.

Greg Bailey returns to KTRK...again

abc13 KTRK sports anchor Greg Bailey returns to work after broken bones and sling

Poor Greg Bailey.

The abc13 KTRK sports anchor has had a spell of bad luck as of late.

He just returned today after a second bad injury complete with a new sling as you can see in the photo below.

"After recovering from surgery I fell and broke bones in my shoulder," Bailey posted on Facebook. "Bummer! (Painful, too.) Thank you for all the great wishes! Back for the Astros and Texans."

A reader alerted me a few days ago that Bailey was missing in action again. Based on his lack of social media posting, I would guess he went missing in mid-September.

In July, channel 13's Bailey had to stay home due to a bad back.

He returned in August.

KTRK 13 scores Greg Bailey from WCNC

KTRK 13 has named a successor for sports director Bob Allen. The station announced it has hired Greg Bailey from WCNC 36 in Charlotte.

The station says Allen will remain on staff as Sports Director Emeritus until his retirement at the end of the year. Allen has been with the station since 1974.

"I’m thrilled to come home to Texas and join the team at KTRK," Bailey told mikemcguff.com. "I look forward to working alongside Bob Allen and the great group he’s assembled in the sports office."

Bailey has been with WCNC since 2007.

Before that he was:
- Weekend sports anchor/reporter for KING-TV in Seattle from 2000 to 2007
- Sports director/anchor at KAKE in Wichita, KS
- Weekend sports anchor/reporter at KLBK-TV in Lubbock, TX
- Sports anchor/reporter at KBTX in Bryan, TX

"Houston’s such a great city and I really look forward to getting started and catching up with so many friends back home," Bailey added.

Bailey is a 2011 Emmy winner. He has also won an Edward R. Murrow and honors from the Texas Associated Press.

According to his bio, Greg likes to say he grew up "skinny and ugly" in Texas.

He is a graduate of Texas A&M. No word on what he thought of the Welcome to the SEC video the Aggies produced.

KTRK 13's Greg Bailey signs off WCNC Charlotte

Future KTRK 13 sports director Greg Bailey signed off from Charlotte, North Carolina's WCNC 36 last Friday after five years there (VIDEO ABOVE).

"I’m thrilled to come home to Texas and join the team at KTRK," Bailey told mikemcguff.com last month. "I look forward to working alongside Bob Allen and the great group he’s assembled in the sports office."

As I wrote before, Bailey will replace Bob Allen. The station says Allen will remain on staff as Sports Director Emeritus until his retirement at the end of the year. Allen has been with the Houston owned ABC station since 1974.

The Lone Star EMMY award-winning reporter came to Houston in December 2002 from WOOD TV8 Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Shay's previous two jobs would be future predictors of her Houston television career.  Now hear me out on this one.

While reporting for KAKE Wichita, Kansas, Shay met future channel 13 sports director Greg Bailey.

OK, this one is more of a stretch, but Shay got her first TV job at WAAY 31 News Huntsville, Alabama.  What is Huntsville, Alabama known for?  Well, as my wife knows, since she attended, Huntsville is the home of Space Camp.  Ok, I told you I was reaching for this, but obviously Houston is home of NASA's Johnson Space Center.

The Syracuse University grad worked at CNN Headline News out of college, and from what I understand, was friends with Newsy's Scott Withers

Shay married a well-known Houstonian, too.  State Rep. Gene Wu and Shay have two sons.

Houston TV sports reunion with Tim Melton as guest of honor

Houston sports fan would have done a double take if they had been at Goode Company Armadillo Palace on Kirby Thursday afternoon.

Former abc13 KTRK assistant news director/reporter Don Kobos arranged a mini-reunion of Houston TV sports departments with representatives from channels 2, 11 and 13.

Longtime abc13 KTRK weekend sports anchor for many decades, Tim Melton, was the guest of honor. You might remember that Melton suffered a stroke in 2011. I am happy to report I hear he is doing well.

Some of those I hear that were in attendance to toast Melton were Bob Slovak (KTRK), Randy McIlvoy (KPRC), Greg Bailey (KTRK), Tom Koch (KTRK), Butch Alsandor (former KHOU Sports Anchor), KPRC 2 news director Dave Strickland, Jaime Zamora (former KTRK photographer), Joe Gleason (KTRK sports producer) and Ted Markus (former KTRK sports producer).
