We're starting off 2016 with a story of a Houston native done good.

 I've learned that KPRC 2 temporary reporter Cathy Hernandez can drop the temp part from her title, because she's going full time with the NBC affiliate.

"I couldn't be more excited to officially join the team," Hernandez wrote the news department in an email obtained by mikemcguff.com. "I look forward to working at KPRC for many years to come. I definitely have A LOT to be thankful for this holiday season!"

In a time when we see a lot of temporary reporters come and go, it's nice to see one stick around. Especially since she began her career with the station as an associate producer and has Houston roots.

Before Houston, Hernandez worked as a reporter for KDVR and KWGN Denver. The University of Houston grad got her turn in front of the camera as a reporter, anchor and producer at KTSM and KDBC in El Paso.

As I wrote when she came back to Houston in June of 2015, I first met Hernandez back in 2007. 

Back then as a lowly abc13 web producer, I was tasked with building a Houston Texans cheerleader section for the site. That year, we held a contest where our viewers got to choose the newest Texans cheerleader. Hernandez competed and eventually landed a spot on the squad! Now we can all cheer on the 2015 AFC South Champions!

So in honor of Hernandez's promotion, I'm headed to the channel 2 studios on the Southwest Freeway with Pom-Poms in hand to say this:

"Who rocks KPRC?
I said Cathy rocks KPRC.
And when the Cathy rocks KPRC,
she rocks it all the way to number 1!"

KPRC 2 has confirmed to mikemcguff.com that Cathy Hernandez has joined the station as a temporary reporter from KDVR and KWGN Denver where she's been since April 2014 .

It's a return home for the Houston native.

In fact, I'm excited to report that Hernandez was on my blog way back in 2007. When I was just a lowly web producer, I was tasked with building a Houston Texans cheerleader section for abc13.com that included a contest where Hernandez and other contestants were vying for a spot on the squad.

She eventually made it, but left the bright lights of football stadiums for those of TV studios a few years later.

According to her bio, Herenandez first started in the TV news biz at KPRC as an associate producer.

Before Colorado, Hernandez worked as a reporter, anchor and producer at KTSM and KDBC in El Paso.

She is a gradate of the University of Houston.

KPRC 2 Houston weekend morning newscast viewers saw Cathy Hernandez and Brittany Jeffers behind the news desk Sunday, and from what mikemcguff.com understands, this is the new permanent 2023 "KPRC 2 News Today" weekend morning anchor team along with longtime meteorologist Khambrel Marshall.

Hernandez and Jeffers apparently are not just fill-in anchoring as they have been off and on (with a mix of other KPRC talent), after Sofia Ojeda left the newscast last summer.

No word on which newscast Sabirah Rayford, who was hired to anchor the KPRC 2 News Today weekend morning news in 2021, will anchor from this point on.  Either way, she will still be a reporter during the week based on her normal schedule.

Hernandez joined KPRC as a temporary reporter from KDVR and KWGN Denver in 2015.

The Houston native was made a full-time reporter in 2016. The University of Houston grad got her TV start as channel 2 associate producer, later moving on to KTSM 9 News and CBS4 Local KDBC El Paso. 

A former Houston Texans cheerleader, Hernandez recently returned to her NFL cheerleading duties for an alumni performance. She recently gave birth to her second daughter.  

Jeffers joined KPRC as a reporter in 2018 from CBS 11 KTVT Dallas - Fort Worth (now known as CBS News Texas as of February 2023). 

A finalist in the Miss America competition as Miss Nebraska, Jeffers previously worked for FOX23 KOKI-Tulsa, OK and KLKN Channel 8 in Lincoln, NE.  

Jeffers gave birth to her second child, a baby son, in 2021.

KPRC 2 reporter Cathy Hernandez reveals baby's gender

When I watch KPRC 2 reporter Cathy Hernandez's baby reveal, I think its perfect for Space City.

"SURPRISE!! IT’S A GIRL!!," Herenandez posted on Instagram with a video.

In the video, Hernandez and her husband, shoot off pink smoke cannons. Reminds me of the rocket kits kids like launching.

In late July, Hernandez announced her pregnancy. The baby is due in January.

On the same day as Hernandez's big announcement, channel 2 anchor Lauren Freeman had her fifth child.

It's been difficult keeping track, but as of this posting, there are still seven KPRC 2 pregnancies!

Cathy Hernandez gave birth to her third baby which is a boy.

"Introducing our sweet baby boy, Ethan Tommy! 

Born on May 23, he’s already captured our hearts with his sweet smile and tiny toes. We're overjoyed and grateful for this great blessing to our family. Welcome to the world, little Ethan!

I can definitely promise you… this will be a wild, exciting ride full of lots of love with your two big sisters!"

Cathy Hernandez returns to Houston Texans cheerleader roots

While the Houston Texans ended up losing 30 to 24 in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs, KPRC 2 reporter/anchor Cathy Hernandez was winning as she returned to her NFL cheerleading duties.

This was just a one timer performance for Hernandez though who just returned for the Houston Texans cheerleader alumni performance.

Best part, Hernandez reports she made it out of NRG Stadium performance uninjured without pulling a hammy.

You can actually follow the Houston native's Texans cheer journey back to 2007 when she an abc13.com contestant trying to win a spot on the squad!

Cathy Hernandez is well known to KPRC 2 morning newscast viewers for cheering on the Houston Astros, and now she has something even bigger to cheer for!

Hernandez gave birth to baby girl Olivia Jane on October 21, 2022.

Yes, 7 KPRC babies are coming in 2019!

Channel 2 is leading the way in getting new viewers...they are literally delivering them!

Overall, most of my readers love the Houston TV pregnancy posts, but I get a few complaints.

However, let it be pointed out that at this moment, seven KPRC 2 anchor and/or reporters are expecting new additions to their families.

That is kinda wild.

So the question is, when will I have to add to this list?

We had the great Houston TV baby boom a few years ago, but this one probably tops it. And of course, in addition to channel 2, we have babies on the way at other stations too!

First daughter Andrea arrived in 2020 who was part of the KPRC baby boom of 2019.

The KPRC 2 Houston reporter posted the good news on Facebook.

KPRC 2 reporter Cathy Hernandez announced a world changing event!

"Our hearts are overflowing!! 💖 Andrea Marie arrived on January 20, 2020 and we’re completely in love. Our world is forever changed...in the most AMAZING way," she posted on Facebook.

Last August, Hernandez and her husband celebrated the baby girl's gender reveal with pink smoke cannons.

Coincidentally, the same day as Hernandez's big announcement, the 2019 KPRC baby boom brought us channel 2 anchor Lauren Freeman's fifth child!

Cathy Hernandez is back with Brittany Jeffers and Brittany Begley on KPRC 2 Houston weekend mornings after maternity leave. She gave birth to Ethan Tommy in May.

Meanwhile, in North Texas, meteorologist Erin Moran of CBS News Texas KTVT Dallas—Fort Worth is leaving for maternity leave with baby #2.

Cathy Hernandez and Brittany Jeffers who anchor weekend mornings on KPRC 2 officially announced today they are the new newscast team.

Now if you read my blog, then you know I broke the news in early March 2023!

Sorry I spoiled the surprise. But you're kinda stuck with me at this point if you want to read about Texas media news. 

In my defense, my readers cannot get enough news about KPRC 2 talent.  Have you ever actually looked at my top stories list?  For the most part, it's generally full of channel 2 Houston news.  

Don't worry other Houston stations, I still love you, and will keep posting about you no matter what!

The two former reporters join legendary meteorologist Khambrel Marshall on the weekend AM shift.  They take over for Sabirah Rayford who is still with the station.

KPRC 2 adds to Saturday morning newscasts

KPRC 2 is adding an extra hour to its Saturday morning newscast with anchors Cathy Hernandez and Brittany Jeffers with meteorologist Khambrel Marshall.  

Hernandez said on a Facebook video that channel 2 has expanded with a 9am to 10am Saturday morning newscast. So that means now there is news from 6am to 7am and 8am all the way to 10am.

According to an older schedule on the station's website, before this weekend, Saturday morning news offerings previously went 6am to 7am and 8:30am to 9:30am.

Hernandez and Jeffers quietly became the new KPRC 2 weekend morning anchors in March 2023, and announced the official change in mid April.

Owen Conflenti adds a boy to the family

The good news is that KPRC 2 morning anchor Owen Conflenti's wife, Odilia, had the baby, bad news is that today Tropical Storm Imelda formed in the Gulf of Mexico. I'll hand that last part over to the TV weather departments.

"Big congrats to KPRC2 Owen Conflenti and his family," posted KPRC medical reporter Haley Hernandez. "It's a BOY named Owen."

Britta Merwin has her baby during a tropical disturbance!

The universe has a funny sense of humor when KPRC 2 morning meteorologist Britta Merwin has her baby during a tropical storm/depression Imelda hitting Houston.

As I am writing this post, it's already starting to pick up here again! In fact, I am trying to post this quickly before we take a power hit. Lots of lighting and thunder right now.

"It's a GIRL!!! Of course I would have a baby during a tropical storm," wrote Merwin on Instagram. "We are thrilled to announce the birth of our 3rd child Lila Rose!"

Merwin let us know back in April that this makes baby three for her family and the first girl.

And since we have a baby boom over at KPRC, in case you missed it, morning anchor Owen Conflenti's baby was born this week too!

Basically my blog has become the KPRC 2019 baby boom blog I guess.

If my calculations are correct, any day you might see a post about reporter Sophia Beausoleil having her baby.
