Mario Diaz joins KPRC 2 as investigative reporter from WPIX 11 New York

Mario Diaz is coming to KPRC as an investigative reporter sources at channel 2 confirm to mikemcguff.com.

No, not Mario C. Diaz, a name Houstonians will be familiar with since he is the Director of Aviation for the Houston Airport System, but Mario Diaz from WPIX 11 New York.

One can assume Diaz is filling the position vacated by Jace Larson.

Diaz looks like he will be able to make his mark on Houston.

He's won so many awards, I could fill this post up with just his honors such as four Edward R. Murrow Awards, eight NATAS Emmys and seven New York Emmy Awards.

And if awards aren't enough, I remember Diaz in the news when Erykah Badu tried to kiss him during a liveshot!


Clearly television news interested Diaz from an early age.

At age 17, he had a TV news internship. By his junior year at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Diaz was a sports anchor for KTNV 13. He even won an NATAS Southwest Emmy for reporting.

At the age of 19, he announced his first world championship boxing match doing the Spanish play-by-play for HBO Boxing Pay-Per-View. He went on to announce ringside 150 championship fights including fights with Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and more.

In 1999, Diaz was included in a New York Times article on sports broadcasting.

"We're like artists in the sense that we have a minute to paint a picture with words," he said in the article. "We have that blank space and we have to fill it with words."

During the summers of 2001-02, Diaz performed host and play-by-play announcer duties for ESPN’s Tuesday Night Fights.

In 2002, Diaz moved to news as a weekday anchor for WTSP 10 Tampa-St. Petersburg.

Politics came calling in 2008 and Diaz went to work for Sen. John McCain's presidential bid.

In 2011 he joined WPIX.

Readers of mikemcguff.com might even recognize Diaz from this very blog. He wrote a guest post for me back in 2014. The subject...an old KPRC clip.

I guess his hiring was meant to be.

Last month I posted some Classic Houston TV news clips. One of those videos was of a 1989 KPRC 2 newscast. That clip sure caught the attention of mikemcguff.com reader and WPIX 11 reporter Mario Diaz (not the Director of the City of Houston Department of Aviation, although I hope he is a reader too).

Here is how Diaz remembered it in his email to me:

I'm based in New York City as a reporter / fill-in anchor for WPIX-TV. However, I spent several years of my youth living in Lake Jackson. This said, I grew up on Houston television. To this day, I have many fond memories of my time spent there.

I wanted to shoot you a note of appreciation for the old clips recently showcased on the blog. The one link from 5/89 generated much curiosity --- since I left the Houston area two weeks later when my parents were relocated to Las Vegas. Now, what makes that link even more personal is that Brazoswood High School was mentioned in the newscast regarding an undercover cop at the school and the arrest of 20+ students. Well, I was a junior at Brazoswood when it all went down. I remember it well since Lake Jackson was quaint and these arrests occurred at the height of 21 Jump Street's fame. We were all stunned at the students who got arrested and how it happened.

Well, I was on the train in NYC yesterday and I about fell over when I watched the link. I've shared that story with my wife in the past, so she was blown away in watching it yesterday.

Diaz tells me he still makes it back to Houston for both work and pleasure. While an anchor in Tampa, Diaz was one of the first journalists at the Astrodome to cover the New Orleans evacuees fleeing Katrina's aftermath.

As for Ken Kalthoff, the reporter forever frozen in time in the video embedded above, I found him at KXAS in Dallas-Fort Worth as a reporter.

Even KPRC 2's hard hitting investigative reporter, Mario Diaz, has a soft, human side.

Questions are coming in asking me what happened to Diaz's eye.

Channel 2 viewers have noticed a big bruise around it.

Now, here is a guy who has sparred with legendary boxing champ Julio César Chavez, but this black eye did not happen in the ring.

Nor did it happen while he was grilling a Houston politician for an upcoming investigative expose.

Turns out, Diaz's son has a good arm according to his tweet.

MIAMI –JUNE 7, 2017- Noticias Telemundo announced the addition of award-winning Mexican journalist Paulina Sodi as news anchor of its morning show, “Un Nuevo Día.” For Sodi, the position represents a move up to the national stage after four years as anchor and reporter for Noticiero Telemundo Houston. Sodi replaces Vanessa Hauc, who will be turning her attention full time on investigative journalism work as Noticias Telemundo Senior Correspondent.

“Paulina brings with her valuable experience as an anchor, reporter and producer in one of our biggest markets,” remarked Luis Fernández, Executive Vice President of Noticias Telemundo. “I feel absolutely certain that she will have a positive impact on the entire Noticias Telemundo team. Until last week, Paulina Sodi was a news anchor and reporter at Telemundo Houston. Before that, she was part of the Proyecto 40 news team at Mexico’s TV Azteca, where she anchored the Informativo 40 Primera Edición, Informativo 40 Domingo and Informativo 40 Tarde newscasts and produced a number of documentaries and special reports, including “Un cachito de suerte, Lotería Nacional” (2012), “Las Mujeres de Ejército” (2011) and “La Ciudad de Agua” (2010).

In addition, Paulina’s journalism experience includes collaborations with leading Mexican newspapers such as El Universal, Reforma and Diario La Razón, and a number of magazines, including Glow and Central. On radio, she served as the host of Reporteros 98.5 on Grupo Imagen Radio, Esfera Humana on Radio Fórmula, and Desde Cero on Radio 13 Noticias.

Paulina has been honored with numerous awards, among them three Emmys™ and the Mexican Association of Radio Hosts’ “Golden Microphone” award. She holds a BA in Communications from Universidad Intercontinental in Mexico City.

The Crime Stoppers of Houston's annual Houston’s Heroes Awards Luncheon took place April 3, 2024, at the Royal Sonesta Hotel. 

Former ABC13 KTRK anchor Dave Ward presented his media award, and Deborah Duncan, host of KHOU Great Day Houston, served as the mistress of ceremonies with other media figures also earning honors.

The event recognizes outstanding community members whose remarkable efforts have significantly contributed to public safety.

The luncheon concluded with a poignant award presentation by Ward, who presented his Dave Ward Excellence in Media Award to Kim Nordt-Jackson, ABC13 Vice President of Programming and Community. This recognition highlighted her exceptional contributions to media and community endeavors.

The Johnny Klevenhagen Award – Larry Baimbridge, Spring Branch ISD Police Chief: Chief Baimbridge was recognized for his significant impact throughout his career in law enforcement. After serving 31 years at Houston Police Department, Larry Baimbridge now serves as the Chief of Police for the Spring Branch Independent School District where he works diligently to keep over 35,000 students in SBISD, as well as the faculty, families, and other officers safe. In creating solutions, he has called upon community partners, including Crime Stoppers of Houston Safe School Institute, to bring additional assets and tools to SBISD. His goal to keep all campuses safe and secure has been felt by all.

The Fenner Weller Award – Robert Arnold, KPRC CH 2: Robert was recognized for his significant contributions as an investigative reporter for over 24 years who has investigated everything from corruption to terrorism, to major storms, to gang violence, to our criminal justice system, to immigration and our southern border with Mexico. Over the years, Robert has worked closely with the Crime Stoppers’ team on countless cases and stories and with victims who need to tell their story or are in search of justice.

The Leiv Platou Award – Griselda Castillo, Grizzy Hood News: Known as Grizzy from “Grizzy’s Hood News” is a Houston native doing enormous things. After falling into the wrong crowd, circumstance took her though the criminal justice system in 2003 and eventually led her to serving a prison sentence. Coming from a great home and a wonderful community, she decided to focus her efforts on volunteering in a way that brought justice to crime victims and uncovered criminal activity. “Grizzy’s Hood News” was born in 2019 and comprised of Grizzy simply showing – literally everywhere as criminal activity was breaking. Today, her “Hood News” platform’s philosophy is for the community to “love one another”, bring unbiased coverage on pressing issues to the community and engage her massive following for solutions and good.

The Corporate Citizen Award – Aramco Americas: Recognized for their philanthropic commitment and support of many community causes. Through their corporate citizen program, they partner with others to enhance STEM education, the environment, and vital social needs. Their spirit of service extends to each employee who shows up willing to volunteer and serve. Crime Stoppers has seen this firsthand through this Houston Heroes luncheon but also through Aramco’s commitment to expand the reach of the Crime Stoppers Safe School Institute. Ultimately, the reach of Aramco goes beyond what any of us can fathom and we remain deeply thankful for their culture, their values, their service, and commitment to Houston.

The three came to Crime Stoppers of Houston last year with a dream and a plan and because of them, the NEEDS Program was created. With a mission to champion the safety, well-being, and empowerment of the neurodiverse community, they brought issues, solutions and a powerful team behind them. Of course, their passion comes from their heart as mothers and teachers.   

The Women Who Shape Houston Award – Joy Sewing, Houston Chronicle: Recognized for her incredible contributions throughout her career in journalism. Joy has served as Houston Chronicle’s culture columnist and fashion editor, interviewing everyone from Oscar de la Renta to Beyonce. Named Houston Chronicle’s First Black Woman News Columnist, her focus is to cover social justice issues who has a long-standing relationship with many charities including Crime Stoppers of Houston.

Partner of the Year Award – Astoundz: Steve Winter and Leisa Holland-Nelson were recognized for their dedication, commitment, and significant contributions to our city and communities. They have helped Crime Stoppers shape their web and digital footprint to better serve and reach our community with the latest safety information, news, free programming, events and more that regularly come out of the organization. Two years ago, they stepped up to help Crime Stoppers create a website for The Glenda Gordy Research Center to provide Houstonians a user-friendly hub for real time crime analysis.

This year’s honorees were truly a reflection of the many men, women and institutions who share a common goal to make Houston the best place to live, work and play. We were thrilled to honor all of the Houston Hero honorees and look forward to continuing to work together," Crime Stoppers CEO Rania Mankarious said. "It was also absolutely moving to see so many familiar faces in the room as well as an array of Houston City Council Members, Harris County Commissioners, Harris County Judges, the Harris County District Attorney, Chief of Police and others in attendance."
