Major changes at Majic 102.1 and 97.9 The Box Houston

Radio One Houston is making major programming and leadership changes at Majic 102.1 KMJQ and 97.9 The Box KBXX, including new management roles and a significant change to The Box's afternoon drive lineup.

The changes come as Urban One, the parent company of Radio One, expands its presence in the Dallas radio market through a $22 million agreement to acquire KKDA-FM K104 and KRNB-FM 105.7 from Service Broadcasting Group in May 2026.

“Everything is bigger in Texas, and that includes our vision, our talent, and the way we think about radio!” said Doug Abernethy, Regional Vice President. “These changes reflect our commitment to delivering fresh, relevant, and engaging content that speaks to the unique spirit of the communities we serve while continuing to push our brands forward.” With experienced radio professionals stepping into expanded leadership roles and Bay Bay joining the afternoon lineup, Radio One Houston is positioning Majic 102.1 and 97.9 The Box for continued growth while strengthening its connection with listeners throughout the city.

Among the biggest changes in Houston, Yonni Rude, formerly program director of 97.9 The Box, has been promoted to operations manager for Radio One Houston and Dallas. He will oversee operations and programming strategy in both markets, working with local teams to develop talent and create programming that reflects each community.

At Majic 102.1, Houston radio personality and Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee The Madd Hatta has been named program director while continuing to host the station's afternoon drive show.

India “Queen Indy Bee” Brewton will serve as assistant program director and music director for both Majic 102.1 in Houston and KRNB-FM in Dallas.

Meanwhile, DJ JQue, host of “Good Morning H-Town” on 97.9 The Box, has been named the station's new program director. Theo “Big Bink” Turner will serve as assistant program director and music director for The Box and KBFB-FM in Dallas.

Hollyhood Bay Bay Joins 97.9 The Box

One of the most significant programming changes is the arrival of Dallas radio personality Hollyhood Bay Bay, who is taking over weekday afternoon drive on 97.9 The Box.

Beginning Monday, October 19, 2026, “The Bay Bay Show” airs weekdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Bay Bay is known for his work at K104 KKDA-FM in Dallas and his connections across the music, sports and entertainment industries.

His arrival marks a major change for The Box's afternoon audience, which had been listening to Houston radio personality G-Man during that time slot.

G-Man Parts Ways With 97.9 The Box After 25 Years

Robert "G-Man" Guerrero, who spent 25 years at 97.9 The Box, confirmed the station decided to let him go.

In an Instagram video addressing listeners, the Houston native reflected on his quarter-century at the hip-hop station and thanked the people who helped launch his career.

“We've parted ways after 25 years, and they've been the best 25 years of my life, professionally,” G-Man said. “I couldn't have done it without you.”

G-Man explained that leaving the station was not his choice, but said he holds no bitterness toward the company.

“It wasn't my choice, it was a business decision. It was a decision that they made that I cannot be mad at,” he said.

He also thanked The Madd Hatta and Robert Scorpio for giving him an opportunity 25 years ago.

G-Man began his radio career in Tejano radio shortly after graduating from high school. Born and raised in Houston, he developed a love for music early on and became a local DJ for parties while attending Pasadena and Milby high schools.

When the opportunity came to join The Box, he jumped at the chance to work in his hometown at one of the country's major hip-hop stations.

G-Man emphasized how meaningful it was to spend his entire 25-year run at The Box in Houston, hosting the same afternoon drive time slot.

“There’s only a few people that can say, that I think of, that I know of, to say that they worked in their hometown in a major city like Houston, at one of the biggest hip hop stations like The Box, and at the same time slot, the afternoon drive, for 25 years,” he said.

He described the experience as a dream come true and thanked listeners for making it possible.

“I appreciate y'all more than you absolutely know,” G-Man said.

After 25 years with limited time away from work, he plans to take a much-needed break before deciding what comes next.

G-Man also acknowledged his successor, telling listeners that Bay Bay is a “really cool dude” who will do great things at the station.

While his departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Houston radio, G-Man left the door open for the future.

“When they say it's not a goodbye, it's a see you later, and that's definitely true,” he said.

Why Are Radio One's Houston and Dallas Stations Changing?

The programming and leadership changes come amid a broader shift in Urban One's radio operations in Texas.

In May 2026, Urban One agreed to acquire Dallas stations K104 KKDA-FM and KRNB-FM 105.7 from Service Broadcasting Group for $22 million. As part of the transaction, Urban One is spinning off its existing Dallas station KZMJ, known as Magic 94.5, to Fuzion Dallas LLC.

The acquisition helps explain why some leadership responsibilities now span both Houston and Dallas, including the appointments involving Rude, Brewton and Turner.

KSBJ's Bill Ingram honored with 'Bill Ingram Day' proclamations

Longtime 89.3 KSBJ personality Bill Ingram was honored with a special recognition for his incredible contributions to radio and the Houston community.

On October 14, 2026, Montgomery County, the City of Humble, the City of Houston, and the State of Texas officially proclaimed October 14 as Bill Ingram Day in recognition of his decades of service in broadcasting.

With 50 years in radio, 30 of them at KSBJ, and an induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2017, Ingram has built a remarkable career connecting with listeners and serving his community. It this means anything, even my teenagers know who he is!

The celebration was organized as a surprise. Ingram thought he was attending a regular staff meeting, but his family was in on the special occasion as community and government leaders gathered to recognize his accomplishments.

Montgomery County Judge Mark J. Keough presented a proclamation honoring Ingram for his extraordinary contributions to broadcasting. Additional proclamations came from the City of Humble, represented by Mayor Norman Funderburk, the City of Houston, with a proclamation signed by Mayor John Whitmire, and the State of Texas, with a proclamation signed by Governor Greg Abbott.

Each proclamation recognized October 14, 2026, as Bill Ingram Day.

Overwhelmed by the recognition, Ingram shared what KSBJ means to him.

"KSBJ is not just a place where I work," Ingram said. "It is my family. I'm really just so overwhelmed, I don't know what to say. I really am."

Ingram began his broadcasting career in 1975 while still in high school. Over five decades, he has served as an on-air personality, program director, music director, morning show producer, and traffic reporter at stations including KILT, WTAW, KFRD, KIKR, KPXE, KJCH, and KSBJ. Beginning in 1991, he was a national traffic and weather anchor for Roadwatch America Network, and he has also worked in television production with Three Star Productions.

He joined KSBJ in 1997 and has spent nearly 30 years serving Houston listeners. A Houston native, he created and hosted “Welcome to Houston” and launched the “Welcome to Texas” podcast in 2020.

Many across the region know him from community events, concerts, and outreach, where he represented KSBJ in the station’s broadcast van, affectionately known as “the Purple People Eater.” He was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2017.

Jam Creative honored at Texas Radio Hall of Fame ceremony 2026

On Saturday, November 7, 2026, the Texas Radio Hall of Fame (TRHOF) will present its George Baches Award for Broadcast Marketing Excellence to Jonathan and Mary Lyn Wolfert of JAM Creative Productions for their service to hundreds of Texas radio stations.

This award recognizes those who contribute to radio stations' success through branding efforts such as logo design, sales and marketing materials, billboard and television messaging, and, in the Wolferts' case, jingles and audio imaging.

The award is named for the late graphic designer George Baches, who designed or reimagined dozens of radio station logos, including KLOL’s iconic Runaway Radio and the 1990 relaunch of San Antonio’s KISS-FM.

“Jingles are an essential ingredient in creating and sustaining ‘station-ality’”, notes Doug Harris, a 2011 TRHOF Inductee who now serves as the organization’s Executive Director. “At their best, jingles are the glue that connects a station’s music and spoken word content while earning a place in the listener’s memory.”

Since 1974, the Wolferts’ work at JAM Creative Productions has touched thousands of radio stations from Los Angeles to New York City and around the world. Notably, the company has remained in the hands of its founders, uninterrupted, since its first day of operations. “It’s a lot of work”, observes Jonathan, “but it’s better than having a real job!”

The TRHOF’s Induction Ceremony and Radio Reunion Weekend is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2026, at the Texas Broadcast Museum in Kilgore, TX. Complete details are available at Reunion Weekend & Induction – Texas Radio Hall of Fame

For additional information on JAM, visit JAM Creative Productions.

Texas Broadcast Museum in Kilgore expands footprint

One of my favorite spots in Kilgore, Texas, is The Texas Broadcast Museum.

I not only shot a lot of b-roll footage for my 101 KLOL Houston documentary "Runaway Radio," but I also screened it at the Texas Radio Hall of Fame induction.

Big news for the museum as it has bought a 21,000-square-foot building next door to make room for its growing collection of donated broadcast equipment.

Museum founder Chuck Conrad told KLTV's Jamey Boyum that FOX 4 KDFW has already contacted the museum about donating equipment as the station plans to move to its new Las Colinas studios. He also said WFAA 8 DFW has inquired about donating a live truck.

The new building won't be a part of the museum proper, but a retail store and repair shop. The museum also plans to sell the type of electronic items that Radio Shack once sold.

Madd Hatta's new book "Kase's Little Adventures" & tour

Benjamin E. Thompson III, known to Houston audiences as Madd Hatta, is bringing "Kase's Little Adventures" to families across the city.

The 34-page hardcover picture book for ages 2-10 turns a family moment into an engaging lesson about imagination, ancestry, confidence, and entrepreneurship.

The book began while Hatta's wife, Ashley, was pregnant. He rhymed to her belly about the things their son might grow up to do; those words became the opening pages. The story follows Kase, a smart and curious child who discovers an old family lemonade recipe and uses creativity, persistence, and family wisdom to build a neighborhood business.

Madd Hatta created the book so his son could see himself in the story - and so other children,  particularly Black and Brown children, could see themselves as readers, creators, and future business owners. Illustrated by Adam Bailey, with contributions by Julia Strange, the book encourages children to read, dream, build and create.

"Fatherhood changed the way I think about legacy," said Madd Hatta.  "I wanted to create something my son could grow with and other families could share. This is not just a book tour - it is a literacy and fatherhood mission."

The free Storytime with Madd Hatta series recognizes National Black Business Month and back-to-school season. Each event features an interactive reading, a family conversation with Ashley and Kase, audience Q&A, photo opportunities, book signing, and giveaways. The first 10 children at each stop will receive a complimentary copy, plus additional prizes.

For more than 30 years, Madd Hatta has been a familiar voice in Houston media. He currently hosts The Madd Hatta Show weekday afternoons on Majic 102.1, is a Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee, and leads Paid in Full Entertainment and the Madd Hatta Cares! Foundation. The book tour extends his community work around literacy, active fatherhood, education, and opportunity.

Voting open for Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2026 induction class

(Houston, TX) July 24, 2026: The Texas Radio Hall of Fame (TRHOF) has released the names of the fifty (50) nominees for its 2026 Induction Class. The voting portal will be open and accessible to voting members in good standing via www.TRHOF.net through midnight on Monday, August 10, 2026.

UPDATE AUGUST 2026
Texas Radio Hall of Fame announces 20206 inductees

TRHOF Executive Director Doug Harris, a 2011 Inductee, reports an especially robust year of nominations, which he attributes to the recent addition of two new categories of recognition.

“Our ‘Small Markets, Big Voices’ outreach clearly hit home with those who fit that description as well as their fans,” observes Harris.  “For many of these broadcasters, this is their first exposure to Hall of Fame consideration and we welcome their involvement.”

In 2025, the TRHOF board approved the addition of a Lone Star Legacies category to recognize influential figures in Texas Radio history who have passed on.  Harris notes that this practice returns in 2026.

Voting members will have the opportunity to select twenty (20) 2026 inductees by reviewing their names, bios, and photos through the voting portal on the TRHOF website.

“Our 2026 ballot is a ‘great read’ because it spotlights the amazing journeys of broadcasters from markets big and small and touches virtually every job description in our industry that connects to the on-air product.”

Over 160 broadcast professionals with ties to Texas radio were nominated for consideration by the TRHOF’s Internal Review Committee, who independently and anonymously made their recommendations on the final fifty. Voting members of the TRHOF will now determine the twenty individuals who will be honored on November 7, 2026, during the TRHOF’s Annual Induction Ceremony at the Texas Broadcast Museum in Kilgore, TX.

Pat Fant addresses broken neck and upcoming surgery

Pat Fant is a legendary Texas broadcaster best known as the architect of Rock 101 KLOL, one of Houston’s most influential rock radio stations.

Now, Fant is sharing with mikemcguff.com a bit about an accident he has been keeping quiet about lately, but he wanted to address it publicly to let the media community know what is happening as he awaits surgery.

Here is what Fant wrote:

"2026 has been a rough year for the Fants.

On May 3 I fell at home and hit my head hard enough on the floor to break my neck.  The fall shattered my first 2 cervical vertebrae which form the spinal structure that holds up the head.  The 911 ambulance guys knew exactly what had happened and put me in a cervical stabilization collar to immobilize the neck.  I haven't had the collar off since that night 6 weeks ago.  Turns out that a broken neck is just one step away from becoming paralyzed due to resulting spinal cord damage.  That's the fear that never goes away until you can get in for the spinal fusion procedure.

Fortunately, I am set for that on June 30 which is where the titanium rods come in to re-stabilize the whole cervical structure and help lock everything in place as the fractured vertebrae fuse back together.  I have to make it 2 more weeks to get rebuilt by the fantastic Methodist spinal neurosurgeons.  After the operation and recovery, it is spinal re-hab in a specialized facility where you'll meet your new best friend Dr Morphine.

You may not think about any of this until you need it, but living in Houston does come with having the Texas Medical Center right up the street!

Then there is my Lydia.  What an angel she has been through it all.  Smart, gorgeous, sweet and loving, Lydia has really kept me safe and upright throughout this entire ordeal. She has made it possible for me to survive the whole thing and I love and appreciate every minute of her help.  Thank you so much honey!  And my 2 wonderful girls came down from Dallas to help out too.

This whole broken neck episode came right on top of a hip replacement last September (a shared experience with my friend Lanny Griffith,)  So after this mess, I promise I am going to stay out of the hospital once and for all.  I just want to go back to cold beer, hot BBQ, driving my classic Caddy around and writing another page of jokes for Uncle Otis - as is God's plan.  At least I have had Fox News to keep me entertained while lying around waiting for bones to grow back together.

Pat's Broken Neck:  Think of it like being in a motorcycle accident but without all the laughs!"

At just 21 years old, Fant became KLOL’s first program director when the station launched on August 7, 1970, introducing Houston listeners to a new era of rock radio by playing The Who’s “I’m Free” as KLOL’s first song and serving as its first on-air voice.

Fant later returned as KLOL’s general manager in the early 1980s, helping transform the station into a cultural force through bold promotions, memorable branding, and the station’s signature “Runaway Radio” identity. He recruited the legendary Stevens and Pruett morning show in 1985 and expanded KLOL into television and live events, including the iconic Holiday Ball.

After leaving KLOL, Fant launched Houston’s The Buzz and went on to lead stations including KIOL, KFNC, KRBE, KHJK and KTXQ. A graduate of the University of Houston, he later founded RFC Media, LLC and SuiteRadio LLC and is also the creator of the KISS Kasket.

San Antonio's Jud Ashmore dies at 101

Jud Ashmore

Jud Ashmore, known for his long-time work in San Antonio TV and radio and for the phrase "Hug somebody. It'll make you feel good," has died at the age of 101.

Ashmore, who achieved legendary status during his time at KSAT12, KENS 5, KBUC, and WOAI, went to college in 1946 and graduated just in time to be swept into the Korean War in 1950. He joined the U.S. Air Force as a meteorologist and retired in 1968 with the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Just two days later, he joined the KSAT 12 San Antonio news team.

Within weeks, Ashmore was also reporting the weather on KITE Radio, working alongside radio legends Ricci Ware and Paul Allen English. Radio, he later said, was a dream come true. Television was fine, but it didn’t compare.

In 1970, Ashmore left San Antonio to work in radio and television in Indianapolis and later San Francisco.  While both were major markets, they never felt like home.

At the first opportunity, he returned to San Antonio in 1972 to become chief meteorologist at KENS 5. While with KENS, Ashmore published a book called "Texas Weather."

Two years later, Ashmore reunited with Ricci Ware for a morning show on KBUC Radio. He joked that the duo had the market cornered on “B.S. and romance.”

CORRECTION: KVUE Austin's Bob Buckalew let me know that Ashmore was let go by KENS in 1974 and joined KSAT that same year.

By 1980, balancing late nights on TV with early mornings on KBUC had become exhausting. The decision between television and radio, he said, was no contest. Radio was more fun—and more profitable.

Ashmore left KENS in 1980 and stayed with KBUC until the station was sold in 1986. That same year, he joined powerhouse News Radio 1200 WOAI, where he delivered weather reports until 2002.

After two years of what he called “fake retirement,” Ashmore returned to the airwaves at KRNH in Kerrville.

He officially ended his career in 2012, though never his love affair with radio.

Ashmore is a 2017 inductee of the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame and a 2024 inductee in the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
