Tessa Barrera will join Ernie Manouse as co-host of Hello Houston beginning Monday, August 17, 2026, Houston Public Media announced today.

I'm told Barrera will not continue working afternoons for Sunny 99.1 KODA since she will be moving down the dial to News 88.7 KUHF, where Hello Houston airs on the radio.

“Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to tell the stories of the people who make Houston so special,” said Barrera. “Joining Hello Houston is an incredible opportunity to celebrate our community and connect with audiences in a new way. I’m honored to join Houston Public Media and work with the entire Hello Houston team to help shine a light on the stories and voices that make Houston such a remarkable place.”

Manouse said he's excited to welcome Barrera to the program.

“Tessa brings tremendous energy, curiosity and a genuine love for this city," Manouse added.  "I’m looking forward to sharing the desk with her, and I can’t wait for our audience to get to know her.”

Together, Barrera and Manouse will continue to host conversations with newsmakers, community leaders, artists and everyday Houstonians, offering audiences an engaging look at the people, events and issues shaping Greater Houston, the station promises.

“Tessa’s warmth, curiosity and ability to connect with people make her an outstanding addition to Hello Houston,” said Josh Adams, associate vice president and general manager of Houston Public Media. “Alongside Ernie, she’ll continue the thoughtful, community-focused conversations that reach audiences across radio, television, digital, HPM+ streaming and social platforms.” 

She brings 13 years of television and radio experience to the new position.

Barrera succeeds Frank Billingsley, who departed Hello Houston just a few months ago. In an interesting twist, Houston Public Media once again tapped a former KPRC 2 personality for the role. Barrera left KPRC 2's lifestyle program Houston Life in March 2026 after three years as co-host.

The Corpus Christi native officially joined Houston Life in July 2023 alongside Derrick Shore after several months as a guest co-host following Courtney Zavala's departure.

Barrera first arrived in Houston in 2019 after being selected through a nationwide search to join iHeartMedia's 94.5 The Buzz KTBZ as a co-host on The Rod Ryan Show. For more than a year, she balanced both her television and radio careers before leaving the morning radio program in December 2024 to focus full-time on Houston Life.

Before returning to Texas, Barrera worked in Los Angeles as a news anchor and executive producer at KFI AM 640.

She launched her broadcasting career in her hometown of Corpus Christi at KRIS 6 and KZTV Action 10 News, where she made history as the region's first Latina sports anchor. During her time there, she covered the Corpus Christi Hooks, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas, and numerous high school sports teams and events.

'Hello Houston' debuted on Monday, March 31, 2025, on News 88.7 KUHF and online weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the slogan, "Your connection to the heart of the Bayou City."

The new radio show and podcast was originally hosted by former KPRC 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley, Ernie Manouse, and Celeste Schurman. Former 97.9 The Box KBXX Madd Hatta Morning Show producer James Kovacik, also known as Jim Beazy, serves as executive producer.  William Menjivar and Garrett Bohlmann are the show's producers.

Former ABC13 KTRK Houston and 740 KTRH news anchor Shara Fryer appeared on Houston Public Media's "Hello Houston," hosted by Frank Billingsley, Ernie Manouse, and Celeste Schurman, to talk about the legacy of her colleague and co-anchor, Dave Ward.

Ward, the longtime anchor at KTRK, died at the age of 86 on Saturday. 

Additionally, after more than four decades at ABC13, longtime anchor Melanie Lawson discusses her upcoming retirement, marking the end of an extraordinary career in local journalism. 

Lawson, who I heard was already scheduled for this day, also shared her thoughts on working with Ward.

A future programming note, Wednesday night from 6 to 7pm, ABC13 will air a special in honor of Ward.

I had the opportunity to be on the new Houston Public Media show, "Hello Houston!" hosted by Frank Billingsley, Ernie Manouse, and Celeste Schurman.  

The radio/YouTube show airs on News 88.7 KUHF from 11am-1pm weekdays.

Radio folks, this is for you - the new HPM studios are AWESOME.  It was one of the most high-tech, futuristic radio studios I have ever had the honor of seeing.  They have cameras with AI switching capabilities!

They tell me that their goal is to provide as hyperlocal coverage as possible for Houston.

On November 4th, Texas voters will face a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Texas to lead the charge against dementia with Proposition 14.

Earlier this year, the Texas Legislature established the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT) to accelerate innovation in dementia research. But there’s one critical piece left: funding. That’s why Proposition 14 will be on the Nov. 4, 2025, ballot.

If approved, Texas will allocate $3 billion over 10 years for dementia research, creating the largest state-funded dementia research program in the country.

Dementia is a growing public health crisis in Texas. The impact of Alzheimer’s is projected to rise, according to recent data:

 

- 459,000 people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in Texas.

- 1.1 million family caregivers bear the burden of the disease in Texas.

- $4.3 billion is the cost of Alzheimer’s to the state Medicaid program.

Proposition 14 presents a historic opportunity for Texas:

- If approved, Texas would allocate $3 billion over 10 years to fund the newly established DPRIT — modeled after the successful Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT).

- This significant investment will create the most extensive state-funded dementia research program in the nation, bringing hope and solutions to Texans right here at home.

- By voting yes, Texans will accelerate the search for effective prevention, treatments, and cures, ensuring Texas leads the nation’s fight against dementia and paves the way for a healthier future for generations to come.

'Hello Houston' debuts on Monday, March 31, 2025, on Houston Public Media's News 88.7 KUHF weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the slogan, "Your connection to the heart of the Bayou City."

The new radio show and podcast is hosted by former KPRC 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley, Ernie Manouse, and Celeste Schurman, with former 97.9 The Box KBXX Madd Hatta Morning Show producer James Kovacik, also known as Jim Beazy, serving as executive producer. The hosts will also take on executive producing.  William Menjivar and Garrett Bohlmann will also serve as producers.

'Hello Houston' promises to take a dive deep into the stories that matter to Houstonians, from breaking local news to cultural happenings, community voices, and the everyday joys and challenges of H-Town life, which includes everything from local politics and city events to Houston’s ever-changing food scene to feel-good stories from your neighborhood. 

"Of course, I'll still get to talk about the weather, but Celeste, Ernie and I will have fun and fascinating discussions about politics, arts, concerts, restaurants, clubs, people: everything that makes this city so great," Billingsley said when the show was announced in November 2024.  "We have a great team behind us, and I'm really looking forward to the challenge!"

'Hello Houston' takes over the mid-day slots held by "1A" and "Here and Now," which will be shifted to after the new local show (1:00 pm: Here and Now and 2:00 pm: 1A).

With the new show starting to air, "Town Square with Ernie Manouse" appears to have been replaced by NPR's "All Things Considered" in the 3 p.m. hour.

Frank Billingsley will join Houston Public Media as an executive producer after stepping down as KPRC 2's chief meteorologist in June 2024.

"Frank Billingsley’s reputation as a Houston legend precedes him," said Houston Public Media Station Manager, Josh Adams in a release. "His experience and connection to our community align perfectly with Houston Public Media’s mission to inform and inspire. We are thrilled to welcome him to the team and look forward to the impact his presence will have."

In his new role, Billingsley will play a central part in the launch of a multi-platform talk show, Hello, Houston!, premiering in early 2025. 

The daily program, airing on News 88.7 KUHF radio, podcast, and social media, will feature Billingsley alongside award-winning broadcaster Ernie Manouse and producer Celeste Schurman (no time was provided by HPM as to when the show will air). Former 97.9 The Box KBXX Madd Hatta Morning Show producer James Kovacik, AKA Jim Beazy, will also produce the show.

Together, the station says the new public radio team will spotlight vibrant stories, inspiring profiles, and thought-provoking discussions that celebrate Houston's diversity and culture.

Houston’s longest-serving TV meteorologist, Billingsley,  had a 42-year career, including nearly three decades with Channel 2. KPRC morning meteorologist Anthony Yanez has since stepped into the role of chief meteorologist.

Billingsley has earned multiple honors from the Associated Press, Houston Press Club, Houston Press Newspaper, and Dallas Press Club. He was also named a “Houston Treasure” in 2018 and a “Houston Legend” by Houston City Book in 2021. The Houston Chronicle named Billingsley the “Ultimate Weatherman.”

Beyond television, Billingsley wrote "Swabbed & Found," chronicling his journey to find his biological family.

Justin McKee is HPM's New Director of Creative Services

Justin McKee joins Houston Public Media in its new role as the Director of Creative Services.

In this role, McKee will direct all branding and marketing for Houston Public Media expanding promotions, branding and fundraising campaigns.

During his time at Houston Public Media, he has helped develop the current branding and design while managing teams of producers, editors, writers, and designers.

“Justin brings a dynamic, creative and structured energy to Houston Public Media’s Creative Services team,” said Josh Adams, Station Manager. “He excels at growing team talent and can also roll up his sleeves and show you how the work gets done. Watch out! New and exciting things are ahead for the Houston community with Justin at the helm.”    

McKee earned his degree in Radio & Television Production at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, and has over 19 years of experience in media production, broadcasting, and creative services. 

His first introduction into media was as a master control operator at KBTX-TV in his hometown of Bryan, TX, where he rose to director of their 6pm and 10pm newscasts.

McKee made the move to Houston in 2009 working as a newscast technical director at KHOU-TV. He quickly became the primary director of Great Day Houston, a live morning talk and variety show. 

Early during his tenure at KHOU, he began freelancing with XI Media Productions, a video production company that streams live music events, such as concerts and festivals. McKee has directed live performances of some of music’s biggest names, such as Justin Timberlake, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Jack White, Vampire Weekend, Gorillaz, Slayer, Bon Iver, Snoop Dogg, Kevin Costner & Modern West, and many more.

“In addition to extensive design, production and creative skills, Justin brings tremendous energy and enthusiasm to the Creative Services team. He is dedicated to our mission and committed to expanding our brand across all media platforms,” said Kyle Claude, Executive Director of Content Operations.

McKee began his career with Houston Public Media in 2014, starting as a Senior Producer in the Creative Services department and eventually rising to Creative Services Manager in 2018. 

To date, he has helped lead the design and marketing of some of the station’s largest productions, including Town Square with Ernie Manouse, I SEE U with Eddie Robinson, A Murder in Montrose, Tu Voz es Poder: A Latino Town Hall, and Houston in Black and White.

I SEE U with Eddie Robinson to launch on KUHF

Eddie Robinson, who has been the Houston Public Media News 88.7 KUHF NPR "Morning Edition" news anchor since 2014, will be launching a new podcast and radio program called "I SEE U with Eddie Robinson."

Here is the description HPM has released about I SEE U:

"The show features candid interviews with newsmakers, filmmakers, musicians and community leaders that help us understand the cultural shifts that are changing our society in so many ways – surprising interviews filled with unpredictability, vulnerability and even a little playfulness.

Eddie shepherds a new approach to the talk show and podcast format. The show's design weaves personal histories and compelling storytelling into unique soundscapes. Captivating conversations drive listeners to reconsider preconceived notions about race and ethnicity, fairness, justice and much more. "Eddie Robinson is the right person to lead this important effort for the city of Houston," station manager Josh Adams said in a 2020 statement about Robinson's promotion to Executive Producer.  "I am thrilled to have his experience and passion moving us forward."

You'll be able to listen to the new KUHF radio show and podcast starting May 15, 2021, Saturdays at 1pm on News 88.7 FM.

This will not be the first time Robinson has covered racial equality.  In 2017, Robinson and HPM's Ernie Manouse hosted "Houston In Black And White."

Before KUHF, Robinson worked as a news host for WNYC New York. He also served as a contributor for Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen. 

He has also hosted a weekly talk show called "The Outfield" on SiriusXM Satellite Radio's OutQ channel.  According to Robinson's bio, it was "the first-ever sports talk radio show for the LGBTQ community and served as a sounding board for athletes struggling with ‘coming out’ and issues of acceptance."

Robinson's radio career actually began as a DJ while he was in high school at a 100,000-Watt FM pop music format station and a country AM station. 

While earning a mechanical engineering degree from Prairie View A&M University he won awards for his on-air work for the school's 91.3 KPVU.

After graduation, Robinson dropped radio to use his engineering degree for 3M. 

He later decided to get a Masters degree from New York University in Media Ecology.  

From there he went on to work for CBS News, NY1 News, WNEW New York, WFAN New York, MTV Networks before joining WNYC.

30th ADA Anniversary Amplifies Annual Houston Festival Message of Inclusion: ADA Architect Lex Frieden Named Honorary Festival Chair

The eighth annual ReelAbilities Houston Film & Arts Festival, a free, citywide event that promotes inclusion through visual arts, films, speakers and a final-night concert, returns February 11-20. . The ten-plus day Festival, annually produced by the JFS Alexander Institute for Inclusion in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, uses the arts as a vehicle to promote inclusion and celebrate the lives, stories and talents of people with disabilities, making an impact that lasts far beyond the Festival.

With the mission to foster inclusion, erase stigmas, change perceptions and create pathways to employment in the nation’s most diverse city, the Festival reaches thousands though numerous art forms. This year, ReelAbilities features 15 award-winning films, the UP Abilities speakers’ event, ReelMusic Concert, two art exhibits—including a Celebration Company art show—and educational programs in schools and workplaces around Houston. All art, film and music events are free.

“At its core a film festival and expanded in our city to include much more, ReelAbilities Houston is known as one of the most innovative among all others in the U.S.with yearlong initiatives anchored by the 10-plus day Festival, said ReelAbilities 2020 Houston Chair Dee Dee Dochen. “That this year is also the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act is an important milestone we are leveraging to amplify the Festival’s voice and reach.”

Dochen added, “We are particularly excited this year to announce that Houston’s own Lex Frieden, known as the architect behind the ADA who was with President George H.W. Bush at the bill’s signing, is the 2020 Festival’s honorary chair.”

“By setting a platform for people of all disabilities, both visible and invisible, to share their stories and talents, ReelAbilities Houston is truly a gift to Houston,” said Co-Chair Benjy Hershorn. “Through engaging speakers, music, film and visual arts, we learn empathy and gratitude, barriers come down,and our minds are opened to new possibilities.”

This year, ReeLAbilities features three preview events: The opening of Illuminating Dyslexia:A Multi-Sensory “Touch to See,” an art exhibit that will be on display through February 26 at the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC featuring the work of Dr. Stephanie Skolik; the January 30 Nobody’s Perfect –Achieving Inclusion, Diversity and Access with Marlee Matlin, produced in partnership with Congregation Emanu El; and a February 5 ReelWork place panel discussion and luncheon hosted by the Greater Houston In Collaboration With Host City Organizer Partnership that, moderated by Frieden, presents a panel of experts discussing companies’ efforts in creating cultures of inclusion by leveraging everyone's unique abilities.

ReelAbilities officially opens on February 11 with ReelPeople: UP Abilities,an evening showcasing three extraordinary speakers who will open windowsinto the world of disabilities with both intimacy and urgency. Captivating the audience will be J.R. Martinez, an Army veteran, burn survivor, actor,best-selling author and Dancing with the Stars winner; Rebecca Alexander, author, psychotherapist, group fitness instructor,advocate, and extreme athlete who is almost completely blind and deaf; and Darrius Simmons, a young musician born with three fingers on his right hand and one finger on his left who will play piano and engage in conversation with musician and producer Chris Walker. UP Abilities takes place at the A.D. Players at the George Theater; more information and tickets ($25) are available at www.reelabilitieshouston.org/upAbilities.php.

ReelArt, a gallery exhibit at the Center for Art and Photography at Celebration Company, will host an opening night reception on February 13 that features the works of visiting artist Mara Clawson, recipient of the VSA/Kennedy Center Emerging Young Artists with Disabilities award. Mara uses the pastels and iPad technology to convey her perception of the world and all are welcome to visit her artwork until April 17 at Celebration Company, 4131 South Braeswood. Operated by JFS Houston’s Disability Services Program, Celebration Company is a Houston-based entrepreneurial program that supports employees’ vocational goals while also providing life and social skills training to enable greater independence.

The Film Festival gets underway Sunday, February 16 with the critically acclaimed film, “The Peanut Butter Falcon”and featured speaker Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, who will address ReelAbilities’ mission of inclusion.The film stars Zack Gottsagen, an actor with Down syndrome who plays Zak, a young man who runs away from a residential nursing home to follow his dream of attending the professional wrestling school of his idol, The Salt Water Redneck. A total of 15 Houston-curated films will be shown through Wednesday, February 19 at Edwards Greenway Grand Palace Stadium 24, 3839 Weslayan St., covering themes that are equal parts compelling, eye-opening, entertaining and even mystifying. Several films will be followed by interactive panel discussions to encourage audience dialogue. All films are captioned and audio described to be fully accessible. Admission and parking are free to attendees.

The Festival culminates Thursday, February 20 with ReelMusic, a celebratory night of jazz, rock and more, where accomplished musicians with disabilities join the ReelMusic house band on stage at White Oak Music Hall. Ernie Manouse, Houston Public Media PBS television host, will emcee the evening which gives many musicians their first chance to showcase their talents in a premiere venue. ReelMusic house band members are Kelly Dean, Andrew Leinhard, David Craig and Daleton Lee. Along with all ReelAbilities public events, Festival programming is additionally taken to dozens of schools, companies and organizations through ReelEducation and ReelWorkplace.

ReelAbilities Houston 2019 Film & Arts Festival Celebrates Talents, Lives of Individuals Living with Disabilities through the Arts



ReelAbilities Houston Film & Arts Festival, a free, citywide event that promotes inclusion through visual arts, films, UP Abilities speakers and a ReelMusic concert, returns February 12 – 21, 2019 for its seventh year. The nation’s most multifaceted ReelAbilities Festival in scope, the ten-day Festival showcases and leverages the unique contributions of people who live with disabilities, with the mission to foster inclusion, erase stigmas, change perceptions and create pathways to employment in the nation’s most diverse city.



JFS Alexander Institute for Inclusion, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, has produced ReelAbilities Houston Film & Arts Festival annually since launching it here in 2013.

“The goal of this Festival is to utilize the arts to help change deep-seated social stigmas often associated with those who live with visible and invisible disabilities,” said ReelAbilities Houston Chair Susan Farb Morris. Co-Chair Dee Dee Dochen added, “Truly a gift to Houston, the Festival drives ‘inclusion’ home through multiple experiences over ten days. With engaging speakers, music, film and visual arts, we’re confident everyone will find an event that speaks to their passions.”



ReelAbilities, founded in New York City in 2007 and now presented in 14 cities, is the largest festival in the country dedicated to presenting world-class films by and about people with different disabilities. The Houston Festival is considered the most expansive festival of its kind in the country, featuring a Celebration Company visual art exhibit, 13 feature and documentary films (full-length and shorts), the UP Abilities speakers event, ReelMusic Concert, and educational programs at schools and workplaces around the city. Through these events, ReelAbilities Houston reaches thousands of participants with its message of inclusion.



The Festival will kick off Tuesday, Feb. 12, 6:15-9 p.m., at A.D. Players at the George Theater with ReelPeople: UP Abilities, an evening showcasing three extraordinary speakers who live with disabilities. They are: Jen Bricker, an accomplished gymnast and aerial performer born without legs; Erik Weihenmayer, the first person who is blind to successfully climb Mount Everest and complete the Seven Summits; and Amanda Boxtel, who, paralyzed from the waist down, bridges human mobility with exoskeletons and bionic technology. ReelArt, a gallery exhibit at the Center for Art and Photography at Celebration Company, will open Feb. 13, 6-8 p.m., with a reception featuring the works of visiting artist Ezra Roy, a nationally recognized mixed-media artist who has Down syndrome, and more than 20 Celebration Company artists who live with varying cognitive disabilities. Operated by JFS Houston’s Disability Services Program, Celebration Company is a Houston-based entrepreneurial program that supports employees’ vocational goals while also providing life and social skills training to enable greater independence. The exhibit will remain open through April 19 at Celebration Company, 4131 South Braeswood.

Doug Johnson of KPRC has died

Beloved former KPRC 2 weatherman Doug Johnson had passed away at the age of 79


It's with sad news I pass on the news that one of Houston's most popular weathermen, KPRC's Doug Johnson, 79, has died, his former station is reporting.

I can still remember sitting in my grandmother's living room watching her TV friends Ron Stone and Doug Johnson on the "Scene at 5" just having a friendly conversation on the channel 2 newscast. Years later, I watched a clip of those two again and it was amazing how effortless they made it look compared to today's more scripted fare.

I would guess that was the appeal of Johnson, he really was like someone you knew in real life. He also helped pioneer television news while covering some dangerous Houston weather.

Johnson was also a fixture on 950 KPRC AM when the Hobby family owned both the television and radio stations, probably only making him more popular with Houstonians.

According to the Liberty County Vindicator newspaper, Johnson was born in the Houston Heights and was a fifth generation Texan. He attended Reagan High School, TCU, Alaska Baptist University and Alaska University.

His first radio job was at KBYR Anchorage, Alaska. He joined KPRC in 1962 and remained on the NBC affiliate until 1994.

Johnson returned to Houston morning TV after KPRC on what was at the time KNWS 51.

In KPRC's excellent story on Johnson's life, the station featured the infamous clip of Wilma the Weather Chicken. Yes, there was a chicken before Radar the Weather Dog.

Johnson told Ernie Manouse on A Conversation on Houston Classic TV on Houston Public Media TV 8 KUHT in 2012 all about the clip which I have transcribed below.

"Ron Stone thought of millions of things over the years that would make my life miserable. And he always thought I needed help with the weather and Wilma the Weather Chicken was one of his inventions," "He presented it to me on the five o'clock show. And he told me to open up the lid, take the chicken out, and it would peck food from the bowl indicating the weather for the next day. We had a bowl called 'partly cloudy,' one called 'cloudy,' and one called 'clear.' So I reach in to grab the chicken, and I've seen chickens before, I had spent some time on the farm up in Franklin, TX, but I had never seen a chicken like this one before. It looked more like the cross between a buzzard and a dove. And it bit me as I was taking it out. And I enjoy sympathy so I wore a big bandage to work the next day. Anyway I set the chicken down and it took off. It didn't peck from any of the bowls, but flew up into the rafters after it landed on Bill Worrell's desk and defecated. But it stayed into the rafters for probably a week until they hired a wrangler to come out and get it."
