Houston getting News 92 FM - 24 hour radio news

Radio One is jumping into the 24 hour news radio business for the first time anywhere, right here in Houston. Just announced today, the owner of 97.9 The Box KBXX and Magic 102 KMJQ, is flipping Praise 92.1 KROI to News 92 FM on November 14. This after 740 KTRH abandoned the News Radio slogan and fired longtime morning anchors J.P. Pritchard and Lana Hughes. Well now Pritchard and Hughes will reunite at the new station with a ton of other famous Houston broadcasting names (see below).

I've been alluding to an FM news station coming to Houston over the last few weeks. Rumors were flying, but no one was talking about it until now. Here is the official Radio One release about KROI:

Radio One Regional Vice-President Doug Abernethy announced today that KROI-FM/Houston (92.1 FM) will begin its programming as a full service news station the week of November 14, 2011. Using the on air moniker "News 92 FM," this 24 hour news and information station will be fortified by the world wide resources of ABC News Radio and Associated Press Platinum and will be populated with the voices of some of Houston's most well known and award-winning radio and television personalities.

The morning news will be anchored by Texas Radio Hall of Fame honorees J.P. Pritchard and Lana Hughes, who served the Houston market as a broadcast duo for over 27 years. Additional duties throughout the day will be handled by other local notables including (listed alphabetically) Mike Barajas (formerly of Fox 26 KRIV), Scott Braddock (formerly of 740 KTRH, 1080 KLRD), Carolyn Campbell (KHOU 11), Kevin Charles (Metro Networks,700 KSEV), Brent Clanton (formerly of 650 KIKK, 700 KSEV), Lanny Griffith (formerly of 101 KLOL, 94.5 KTBZ, Fox 26 KRIV), Laurie Kendrick (740 KTRH, 101 KLOL, 97.5 KFNC) , Martha Martinez (101 KLOL), Bonnie Petrie (740 KTRH, 1080 KRLD), Matt Sampsell Fox 26 KRIV, KIAH 39), Pattie Shieh (Fox 26 KRIV), Meteorologist Dr. Joe Sobel, Craig Roberts (KPRC 2, 101 KLOL, 55 KTBU), and Jorge Vargas (KIAH 39).

"Our review of Houston's broadcast landscape told us that those listeners interested in local news as well as national news were being poorly served," says Abernethy, "so we decided to make a commitment to delivering the news in a dependable fashion. People want to hear about news as it happens, and they shouldn't have to wait until their radio station 'catches up'. We'll deliver the news as it unfolds."

Ed Shane, founder and president of the Houston-based Shane Media Services, is serving as Project Manager on the format flip from gospel music to all news and predicts that Houstonians will find much to like about News 92 FM.

"We're going to give people the facts without the biased opinions that dominate so-called news stations," offers Shane. "We've assembled an A-list of broadcast journalists whose mission is to report the news and let people make up their own minds."

Shane says that the programming team, led by veteran news director Denise Bishop, will deliver an appealing blend of local, regional and national news along with topical information and the traffic and weather updates that are essential to Houston listeners.

Barry Mayo, President of the radio division for Radio One agrees. "The change that we announced today is a ground-breaking and necessary addition to the choices available to the residents of the Houston metro area," said Mayo. "The ability to realize a need and then take the appropriate action to satisfy it is what has sustained the popularity of our Houston radio stations."

The station will broadcast from recently expanded studios in the Radio One broadcast center that currently houses market leaders Majic 102 (KMJQ-FM) and 97.9 The Box (KBXX-FM). KROI-FM's current programming, Praise 92.1 will moved to Majic 102's HD channel and will stream online at www.PraiseHouston.com.

Praise 92.1 is home to the syndicated Yolanda Adams Morning Show, but I assume Adams will just keep broadcasting across the nation from the Radio One Houston studios (assuming she still broadcasts the show from here).

NewsFix: How are ratings for KIAH 39's anchorless news?

"A radically different approach to local TV News is being planned..."

With that opening sentence written in the Imaginator job description, NewsFix was brought into our consciousness July 2010. So what has happened to the KIAH 39 Tribune anchorless newscast in the six plus months since its debut?

I really haven't written much about NewsFix since it went on the air. After working at KIAH before NewsFix's launch, I felt I knew too much about it and wanted some distance before really blogging about it. Clearly a news program billed as "revolutionary" and a reinvention of "the 80's rooted, focus grouped, yuppie anchors and a news desk, super doppler ultra weather style" should be given some attention.

September marked the six month marker of the NewsFix era. In August, I obtained KIAH 39's 9pm monthly ratings from July 2009 to August 2011 (more on the 5pm below). However, I do not have the September 2011 9pm ratings.

First, let's go back to the 9pm news ratings pre-NewsFix. From July 2009 to August 2010, KIAH's 9pm news had a monthly rating of anywhere from a 1.1 share to a 2.0 according to Nielsen, the company that tracks TV ratings. I would love to take credit for this next part - from September to December 2010 (while myself and the other freelance reporters were employed there), the ratings started to trend up. In November, the 9pm rated a 2.1, then a 3.3 in December. Shout out to executive producer Perry Pace and assignments manager Joe Segura for that and of course the entire staff too.

However there was a downward trend in the ratings starting in January 2011 as more and more resources left the newscast for the oncoming NewsFix.

For the month of March (NewsFix debuted at the end of that month), the 9pm monthly average was 1.1. April went down to 1.0. May down to 0.9. Then we saw growth to a 1.0 in June and July. August saw another jump to 1.2. Unfortunately I don't have the ratings for September.

I also got word from a source at KIAH that one day in mid-October, "NewsFix had the highest ratings in Houston at 5pm for the 18-49 demographic." That's the demo that advertisers like.

So ratings are going back up to and sometimes ahead of the former newscast. From a business standpoint, this must be a win for Tribune and KIAH. As everyone knows, NewsFix ditches the standard positions of anchors, reporters, weather and sports talent. So if the station has cut those salaries out of the equation and is building up to pre-NewsFix ratings levels (when it was paying all of those people plus their benefits), the accountants must be happy.

Since the show's debut, we've seen the introduction of new segments like "The Fixer" and "Class Acts," plus the addition of morning newscast Eye Opener with local news from Mia Gradney.

I'm not going to sit there and critique the show, obviously the format is not for everyone, but there is an audience finding it. If you don't like it, there are plenty of standard newscasts on the air in Houston to watch. I have noticed NewsFix viewers talking positively about it on Twitter over the last few months.

Before NewsFix's debut, I heard a lot of concern about what it was trying to do from people at the other Houston stations. They saw the potential writing on the wall if an anchorless format catches on. While I don't subscribe to Tribune's marketing hype that NewsFix will change the face of TV news, I do potentially see it catching on in certain markets as a way for low performing stations to try something else while attempting to help the balance sheet in these rough economic times.

I'll close with this thought. NewsFix changed a lot from the demo show that was put together in 2010. If you think NewsFix is edgy now, you should have seen the demo. Here is an article that describes what was in it.

KIAH 39 declined comment for this post.

UPDATE NOVEMBER 08, 2016
KHOU 11's new set 2016

Apparently new KHOU 11 anchor Lisa Hernandez is the current story line in most people's minds right now since that's who they are talking about. The lesser story over Belo Houston is the station's new set which debuted Monday. Here are some screen grabs I took Tuesday from KHOU 11 at 5 and 6pm. Notice the soft colors and lack of seats for the meteorologist and sports guy.

Fox 26 KRIV gives Isiah Carey AKA The Insite news segment

As a blogger, I was pleasantly surprised to see Isiah Carey AKA The Insite get his own blog segment on Fox 26 KRIV. That's right, at 5pm everyday (and in other KRIV newscasts at times too), the Isiah Factor comes on the air.

"This is the most fun I've had on TV in a while," Carey told mikemcguff.com. "It gives me a chance to tell the quirky stories and all of the crazy things that happen behind the scenes. So far I've had the McDonald's customer who went off on an employee over a Hot and Spicy burger and the news crew who looks suspect."

Speaking of news crews, any Insite reader will be able to tell you that Carey always has a great behind the scenes look into the Houston TV news world and his own KRIV stories. For example, you can watch the above clip where Carey and photographer Torrey T-Dub Walker were shooting a story in Meyerland and the cops were called on them. Here is the blog version.

"It wasn't my idea, but the brainchild of my News Director Tom Doerr and General Manager D'art Bebel," Carey told me. "They said, 'Isiah, we want you to put some of the stories from the Insite on TV.' I was like a kid in a candy store when they said that."

I'm impressed that KRIV has such a supportive role in this. Most stations around the country would not let a reporter have their own blog segment on air, much less about a personal blog. If a segment like this was actually allowed, most likely a station would want that blog to be on its own website so it collected the ad money.

I used to work for a TV station where a manager would stop me in the halls and say they were reading my blog everyday. That actually sent a chill down my spine because I knew they weren't reading because they liked it. Those types of incidents put a chilling effect on your blog and work.  In fact, now that blogs have been around awhile and we can look back in hindsight, I would recommend to TV station employees (and anyone at a corporation) not to write a personal blog.  It's probably not worth your career.

Back to Carey, you might have recognized the Isiah Factor branding from a promo the station launched earlier this year.

Car towed in Houston? Here is a website to find it

Can't find your car in Houston? Parking can be at a premium in certain parts of town so sometimes you must do the unthinkable and park illegally. Of course that can get you towed and then what do you do? Walk? Bike? Not in Houston my friend.

That's why the Houston Police Department has announced a new website that "provides access to information pertaining to vehicles stored as a result of non-consent tows." Translation, where the [bleep] did my car get towed to?

findmytowedcar.com

HPD says this system is more time efficient and allows you and me, Joe Q. Public, to make inquiries into missing vehicles without repeated phone calls. Plus the receipt and release of vehicles can be tracked by storage lot owners electronically and in real-time. All you need is the vehicle's complete license plate number or complete Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). This isn't a Scantron, no guessing on this one.

That means you have more time to get to Midtown or The Rice Village to go through the process all over again.

Houston Police Chief Charles A. McClelland Jr. explains findmytowedcar.com in this video.

KRIV, KDFW, KTBC and other Fox channels could be off DirecTV

Remember when I told you that Belo and DirecTV were in some intense negotiations that could affect DirecTV customer's ability to see Texas stations WFAA, KHOU, KENS and KVUE?

Well, it appears that Belo isn't the only one having a dispute with the satellite TV company.

Now Fox broadcasting is taking its DirecTV battle public too. Just like Belo, Fox is facing a possible November 1st cut off date form the service if a deal cannot be reached. Stations affected would be KRIV Houston, KDFW Dallas and KTBC Austin. That's in addition to Fox's cable outlets like Fox Sports (not counting Fox News).

At issue right now, is that broadcasters like Belo want more money to be featured on DirecTV and the satellite company is digging in its heels. Fox claims this is not true in its case.

On a newly created Fox website called keepmynets.com, the broadcasting company writes:

DirecTV says Fox Networks wants a 40% increase. That’s just not true. We have proposed to keep Fox Networks on DirecTV for the same price, and on the same terms as they are currently carried while we attempt to work out a fair agreement. Unfortunately, DirecTV has decided unless they get their way, they are going to pull your favorite networks, shows and sports programming. Starting on November 1, DirecTV will no longer carry FX, FSN, SPEED, National Geographic Channel, FOX Soccer, FOX Soccer Plus, FOX Deportes, FUEL TV and Fox Movie Channel.

"We hope to resolve this situation before any action is taken, but we will do what's necessary to protect our customers from excessive and unwarranted fee increases," DirecTV spokesman Darris Gringeri told the American-Statesman on Monday. "We already provide News Corp. nearly a billion dollars a year for their channels, and we have no problem continuing to compensate them fairly."

Play nicely kids.

Former WFAA anchor Macie Jepson lands at WEWS Cleveland

Former WFAA 8 anchor Macie Jepson was laid off from the Belo station in 2008. Since then, I've had a lot of Dallas-Fort Worth readers stop by my blog looking for news on her. Well, three years later, here we go. Jepson has just been hired as the new anchor for Good Morning Cleveland at WEWS TV NewsChannel5.

Jepson, who is now going as Macie McInnis Jepson, used to be an anchor at WJW Fox 8 Cleveland in the 90s. Guess she was Macie McInnis at some point back then (although in the old video embedded above, she is clearly Jepson). She later went on to work at KTBS and KNOE in Louisiana.

At WFAA, Jepson served as the 5pm anchor and reporter who covered the medical beat. She earned the “Medical Reporter of the Year” honor from the March of Dimes, as well as the 2006 American Women in Radio and Television “Personality of the Year” award.

“Announcing Macie as one of our morning news anchors is another step in strengthening this very important news daypart,” NewsChannel5 News Director Jill Manuel said on the station's website. “Many viewers already know Macie, and her knowledge of the people, places, and things that matter to Northeast Ohioans will be advantageous to everyone who engages with NewsChannel5 in the morning on-air, online and through our social media platforms.”

Jepson will start at WEWS in late November and join meteorologist Christine Ferreira, traffic Anchor/reporter Alicia Roberts and another co-anchor soon to be announced.

KHOU 11's Greg Hurst gets love from station too

Since I broke the news that Lisa Hernandez would be the new KHOU 11 news anchor to replace Lucy Noland, lots of attention has been paid here to the KABC 7 transplant. What about her soon to be co-anchor Greg Hurst though? Don't worry, KHOU is producing promos with him too. In this one, he goes to a Houston Texans game at Reliant Stadium. Glad he found something to cheer about there.

Here she was a reporter at the top ranked station in the number 10 television market and she was quitting to take care of her kids. Noble I thought, but it floored me. A few months later, I left to do the same thing. Clearly Whitley helped inspire some paradigm shift in me I guess.

While still watching her little ones, Whitley has recently jumped back in the game as a self-described story teller. Only this time for clients with her new company Reel Media Solutions.

"I loved working as a full time television journalist, however I needed something more flexible to give my family more of my attention and time," Whitley told mikemcguff.com. "Growing this business really allows me to have the best of both worlds. The kids don't come with me on shoots or consultations, but I they do know to be quiet when Mommy is on the phone with a client."

Reel Media Solutions features client services that include video production, public relations, media consulting and writing tailored to their needs.

"During my years in television news, I learned everybody truly has a story and I love to share those stories," Whitley told me. "The premise also translates beyond individuals and extends to companies and businesses.

"I think my past as a television reporter helps clients because I have solid news judgement. I have been on the front lines of newsroom decision making. I understand why producers, editors, reporters may cover one story over another and how to get their attention."

One of her first clients - Leprechaun Hard Cider, Texas’ first hard cider company.

The company's web address will be myreelmedia.com when the site is live.

Former KHOU 11 reporter Dave Fehling joins NPR

A few months ago, I blogged that longtime KHOU 11 reporter Dave Fehling was moving on. This week, I got word that Fehling has just accepted a reporting position for national NPR and local NPR station 88.7 KUHF. It's part of a new eight station network called StateImpact Texas.

"I learned that for now, I can't sever my ties from the only profession I've known - journalism," Fehling told mikemcguff.com. "A unique and unexpected opportunity was offered to me and seemed a perfect fit."

The focus of StateImpact Texas is state government and public policy coverage on air and online. An NPR representative told me StateImpact Texas will focus on energy and environmental coverage.

"As currently envisioned, the position will allow me to do extensive research and hopefully present comprehensive reports on how public policy affects our lives," Fehling told me.

KUT in Austin and KUHF are the lead stations in the effort. Two Austin based reporters are already on board with the site launching in November.

On a personal note for Fehling, working for NPR and KUHF at its University of Houston studios allows him more time to teach students there.

"In addition to a senior level broadcast journalism class I've taught since 2007, I'll now be teaching a new course, Production for Journalists, which addresses the demands of multimedia journalism by covering the basics of using video to tell stories," Fehling added.

StateImpact Texas also employs some other familiar Texas journalists. Former Texas Tribune and KVUE 24 reporter Elise Hu is the digital editorial coordinator for the program. Her husband and former Texas Tribune/Houston Chronicle reporter Matt Stiles serves as the database reporting coordinator.

In these days of diminishing local public policy reporting, glad to see NPR is picking up the ball and running with it. It's interesting to note that 88.7 KUHF is now the only local radio news station in Houston since 740 KTRH abandoned the format this summer (but remember there are always the rumors of a new FM news station coming on the air in Houston so stay tuned).

KPRC 2's Dominique Sachse gets engaged in Rome

UPDATE
KPRC 2's Dominique Sachse and Nick Florescu's new wedding plans

Photobucket

Love is in the air for KPRC 2 anchor Dominique Sachse. The Queen of the Houston social scene reporting, Shelby Hodge, is reporting that Sachse is engaged:

It's official: KPRC Ch. 2 news anchor Dominique Sachse and international businessman Nick Florescu, a steady duo for more than a year, are engaged. Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome popped the question to the native Houston beauty last week on the last night of a holiday in Rome.

[snip]

No exact date is yet set but Dominique says only half joking that it will probably have to be planned around sweeps and hurricane season, which means March, April or early June of next year. The crux is to convince KPRC management to let Dominique's co-anchor Bill Balleza and meteorologist Frank Billingsley and herself all be off at the same time. READ THE FULL DETAILS

Some of you will know how TV bosses can be about vacations crossing into sweeps and hurricane season.

As for Nick Florescu, all I know about him is from the Internet. Described as a businessman, Florescu has been mentioned in Hodge's columns before (back to her Houston Chronicle days). Another page says he is the Honorary Consul General for the Consulate of Romania.

Here is a photo of Florescu and Sachse at the Dancing with the Houston Stars ballet benefit at the home of Becca and John Thrash from May 10, 2011.

Congrats to the couple.

KHOU 11 unveils the Lisa Hernandez shock and awe

As you first learned on mikemcguff.com, former KABC abc 7 anchor Lisa Hernandez is replacing Lucy Noland (now of KNBC 4) at the KHOU 11 anchor desk next to Greg Hurst. Hernandez's official start date is Monday October 24th on the 5 and 10pm newscasts.

Hernandez has been in Houston for most of this month already and now we know what she's been doing...participating in the big station promo campaign for her arrival. Check out the two promos embedded in this post that tell her story.

If that's not enough, KHOU.com has launched an official Lisa Hernandez section where you can read and see more about her. There will also be Hernandez content on the station's mobile apps.

I figure if you are getting a new Los Angeles anchor, you might as well go big or go home in your promotional efforts. I've already had lots of sad California viewers come by and comment how they already miss her, so expect Hernandez to hit the ground running here.

Houston radio changes = change in ratings? Plus news radio?

It was a wild ride this past summer for Houston radio. We watched a station dump a format and others dump well known morning show talent.

I've already looked at how 107.5 The Eagle KGLK's ratings jumped after taking over 106.9 The Zone.

Now let's examine what has happened to Mix 96.5 KHMX and 740 KTRH since replacing Maria Todd with Kidd Kraddick and Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard with Matt Patrick respectively. I can tell you that both got a huge reaction on my blog from readers.

Let me start by saying I only am looking at the 12+ ratings numbers from Arbitron. They are the only ones released to the public (Nielsen does not offer any Houston TV ratings publicly). That being said, we will not get a full picture of how a radio station is doing in certain demos and time slots (examples of metrics used to sell advertising and make money for the stations).

Luckily for us, David Barron of the Houston Chronicle does see more than just the 12+ Arbitron numbers. He reports that for the first time in his memory, SportsRadio 610 KILT is nipping at the heels of 740 KTRH for top rated AM station in Houston:

KTRH continues to lead KILT in the weeklong persons 12-plus ratings, as reported by Arbitron for September, with a 2.8 percent audience share to 2.2 for KILT (for comparison purposes, Clear Channel's KODA, 99.1 FM, is No. 1 overall at 7.0).

But KILT leads by two-tenths of a point in the weeklong adults 25-54 ratings, and it leads by seven-tenths of a point in morning drive, which reflects KILT's Texans-fueled surge and the KTRH's slump as the Astros dawdled toward 100 losses and also since it ditched longtime news anchors Lana Hughes and J.P. Pritchard in favor of talk show host Matt Patrick. Since the numbers for June, the last full month that Pritchard and Hughes were on the air, KTRH is down more than a point in morning drive share for adults 25-54. KILT is up by about a point. READ MORE

There are currently rumors swirling around town of an all news station replacing an FM station on the Houston radio dial. Connected to the departure of Lana and J.P.? Who knows? Place for former KTRH reporters and anchors to work if rumors are true...maybe.

Next over at Mix 96.5 KHMX, the public 12+ Arbitron numbers over the last three months show a decline in ratings:

KHMX-FM
July 2011 - August 2011  - September 2011
3.2 1,158,300 | 2.9 1,172,500 | 2.2 1,100,200

CBS Houston declined to comment on this. However I talked to an informed source in the broadcast ratings world and was told the station has been declining in the ratings even before Maria Todd was taken off mornings. It might have more to do with the station's format being affected by sister station Hot 95.7 KKHH and across town rivals 104.1 KRBE and Sunny 99.1 KODA.

Memorial service for Jim Myers, former KTRK 13 photog

Got word there is a date set for former KTRK 13 photographer Jim Myers' memorial service.

It will be from 1 to 4pm, Friday, October 21, at the VFW Hall located at 21902 Northwest Freeway in Houston.

As I blogged earlier this week, Myers, 52, was found dead last week at his home.

Myers worked in various television markets throughout his career. I know he worked at KMOL (now WOAI) in San Antonio for a number of years and then later in San Diego. He worked at KTRK for around 10 years or so.

According to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences records, Myers' cause of death is still pending.

KTRK 13 brings Doug Zepeda Ortiz from KUVN 23

Here is an update for you. It was almost a year ago that I wrote how a former KIAH 39 co-worker of mine (I do not work for the 39 anymore by the way) was leaving for the DFW Metroplex. That's right, photographer Doug Zepeda Ortiz moved to Univision 23 KUVN Dallas.

Now I can brag about my powers of prognastication. Here is what I wrote in 2010:

The only thing I wonder is, how will a guy who lives and breathes Houston and UH survive in DFW?

Wow, was I right or not? Doug just recently started in the programming department of KTRK 13. He joins another recent KIAH 39 photog arrival, Matt Robbins, in that department. You might also remember that former KIAH 39 photog Damion Smith just joined the Eyewitness News department.

So now Doug can feel at peace once again driving the 610 Loop, sitting in traffic in the Galleria area and watching his UH Coogs.

Wake up with KHOU 11's Chita Johnson

The arrival of Chita Johnson to Houston started off with a big bang on this blog and then news of the meteorologist kind of fizzled like Houston's chance of rain. Sorry about that. I know Johnson has fans that stop by here.

However I can report that Chita has been doing fill-in weather this week on KHOU 11 News this Morning with Christine Haas and Ron Trevino. So if you are working while KHOU 11 News at 4 is on (May I ask where your priorities are?), here is your chance to wake up and see Chita. I also understand that Chita has started doing the weather on KHOU's noon newscast. It's like we're watching an ever expanding Chita nation across KHOU.

I imagine that meteorologist David Paul must be on vacation. He needs it. Paul has been working overtime helping out Houston's theater district.

KHOU, WFAA, KVUE & KENS' battle with DirecTV

Photobucket

It seems that Texas TV company Belo is in a dispute with DirecTV over carriage of its stations. And those are some pretty big stations in Texas - WFAA, KHOU, KENS and KVUE. At dispute is the amount of money Belo gets from DirecTV for carrying its channels. The TV group argues lesser watched cable channels get a higher level of compensation than its highly watched stations.

That means if a deal is not reached by November 1, you won't see Belo stations on the satellite TV carrier.

Each Belo station has a page on its site dedicated to the issue. Here is some of KHOU's message:

KHOU/CBS have far more viewers on DIRECTV than any single cable channel. Yet KHOU and CBS do not receive the same level of compensation as many lesser-viewed channels. We do not believe that is fair.
DIRECTV and other video providers regularly pay for content from broadcast and cable stations. DIRECTV is undervaluing KHOU/CBS programming…paying more to some cable channels with far fewer viewers. We don’t think that’s fair, and are asking for a level playing field.
We are working to reach a fair agreement and provide as soon as possible, the programming that our viewers value. Any disruption in carriage impacts only DIRECTV customers. No other viewers are impacted. We are working hard to resolve this issue and arrive at an agreement that benefits our valued Houston viewers.
We have also reached comparable agreements with other service providers in Houston.
If we are unable to secure an agreement with DIRECTV, customers who subscribe to the satellite provider’s services will not be able to view KHOU and therefore will need to use our free, over-the-air signal or other video providers (depending on availability) such as DISH Network, a cable company, or a telephone service such as Verizon FiOS or AT&T U-Verse.

Read messages from WFAA, KENS and KVUE.

The Idaho Statesman has an article based on Belo station KTVB's issues with DirecTV. Here is what a spokesperson for DirecTV told the paper:

DirecTV says KTVB is using scare tactics to get more leverage in talks. A warning shot is “something [Belo Corp.] did during similar talks with Time Warner Cable and Dish Network last year,” said Darris Gringeri, a spokesman for DirecTV. “None of those customers ever lost access to Belo stations, and we expect the same positive result here.”

KTRK 13 community affairs VP Denise Bates leaves station

She is still listed on the station's website, but KTRK 13 vice president of community affairs Denise Bates has left the ABC owned and operated station.

"[I'm] heading into another direction," Bates told mikemcguff.com. "More to come."

Bates had been with KTRK since 2002. Before that she was community affairs director at WISH-TV in Indianapolis where she also worked as a special projects producer. Bates wrote for the Indianapolis Recorder newspaper too. She graduated from Purdue University.

Bates was just nominated for a 2011 Lone Star EMMY award for community service with vice president and news director David Strickland. She also serves on the board of directors of The Museum of Cultural Arts Houston (MOCAH).

I understand that Bates' duties have temporarily been picked up by KTRK human resources manager Vickie Angenend and other staffers.

Is KHOU 11 getting a new set?

Photobucket

It's obvious from all the changes that I've blogged about recently, that KHOU 11 is getting an overhaul right now. Now a source tells me that the Belo owned station is getting a new set too. The new set will most likely be ready for the debut of new main anchor Lisa Hernandez of abc7 KABC fame. So that means late October.

In the meantime, you can see that the anchors are doing the newscasts from the newsroom. A temporary looking set has been squeezed in which kind of resembles the way KPRC 2's set looked for many years.

Former KTRK 13 photographer Jim Myers found dead in home

Sad news to report in the Houston TV news community. Former KTRK 13 photographer Jim Myers, 52, was found dead last week at his home.

I worked with Myers. He was a nice, upbeat guy. In fact, I even remember him buying some of his own camera lenses to help make stories better.

"Jim was a man I consider a true friend, one who stood by you, even in difficult times," former KTRK 13 (now KIAH 39) photographer Ben Lutman told mikemcguff.com. "Many may remember his nervous twitches as he rushed to get stories on the air. Most will remember a person who was passionate about his work. He will be missed by his friends."

I will update you if I find out information about his funeral service.

UPDATE
Got word there is a date set for former KTRK 13 photographer Jim Myers' memorial service.

It will be from 1 to 4pm, Friday, October 21, at the VFW Hall located at 21902 Northwest Freeway in Houston.
