89.3 KSBJ’s Susan O'Donnell leaving morning show

UPDATE 2/28/2013
Susan O’Donnell leaves 89.3 KSBJ

89.3 KSBJ, Houston's Christian music radio outlet, has a big change coming. Turns out Susan O'Donnell of the “Morning Show with Mike and Susan” is leaving the show after 18 years of being on air at the station.

O'Donnell is stepping away from the microphone because of the other station gig she took last September...program director.

"While it is my joy to spend that time on air, I am realizing that the better spot for me now is to step fully into my role as the leader of the programming staff for KSBJ," O'Donnell said in an email announcement. "It’s a lot like when a teacher gets promoted to Principal to lead all classes instead of just one. I’m excited about what this new place of leadership will mean. And with this transition, I have made a decision that I believe will be the best for the future of the ministry."

According to her personal site, O'Donnell is also a stand up comic. She has performed at The Improv and also opened for secular entertainers like Johnny Rivers and Christian artists like Kathy Troccoli, Avalon, Bob Carlisle, Phillips Craig and Dean and Jackie Velasquez.

No word on when O'Donnell is actually leaving the mic to morning co-host Mike Kankelfritz.

  1. I can see Jennifer Reyna leaving KPRC to just go full-time on the mornings on KSBJ. Who thinks that idea is great?

  2. I think it would be hard to find someone else to replace her, but there's several other stations across the country that are like KSBJ and someone from those stations would fill in her place. Although they have been rumors lately about Jennifer Reyna leaving KPRC to join fully with KSBJ as a full time jock or something like that, I just don't think that's a good idea.

  3. That is insane. Jennifer Reyna is being groomed to be the next big star at KPRC in the next 3 years or less. Look how often they have her on doing reporting, weekend anchoring, and even traffic updates for the following day in the 10pm news. The talk is she is the future of the station once they can get rid of Dominic's big contract.

  4. Well KHOU has groomed Lucy Noland and KRIV has groomed Siblia Vargas to become their big female star of their stations, and both left it as it was happening, so I don't guarantee having a station grooming anybody a factor in staying because nothing is guaranteed. As for the answer for the first poster, Yes. She's not only their traffic provider but a weekend jock on Saturdays as well, but having to leave would be difficult especially if you're more known there than the audio medium. As for Susan leaving, that sucks but I think her new job perhaps suits her best. I wonder what do program directors do?

  5. I think the whole Mike & Susan show was the worst decision KSBJ has ever made. They used to be good until they hired those two. Glad one is down and one more to go.

  6. Sorry Susan is leaving. I'm gonna miss her.

  7. Theresa from KTBZ would be better to replace her than Jennifer Reyna. What are they thinking?

  8. KPRC is force feeding us Reyna but she's inept and unqualified. And she's got a face for radio -- looks like Eva Longoria without makeup (Google that phrase and tell me I'm wrong).

  9. Memo to KPRC: There are many qualified African Americans you can hire for the anchor desk. Look beyond implants, hair bleachings and accent marks in names, and you can return a shred of credibility to your newscast. Right now, Ian and Bill are the only anchors with skill or genuine personalities. And for the love of God, return Jennifer Bauer from whence she came. Reminds me of Tweek from South Park...always hoppy like on a caffeine rush.

  10. Dominique is more like Tweek from South Park than Bauer is.

  11. Why is everyone walking about KPRC? It's not like KSBJ and KPRC are owned by the same company? Are they?

  12. Sachse is more like that old lady in the Seinfeld episode when Kramer moved to L.A. to become a screenwriter.

  13. And Reyna is much like the character that Megan Fox played in Transformers.

  14. Susan sucked on KSBJ, and now she is bringing it down to the ground. I remember a time when it didn't have jocks and was mostly automated, that all changed just to get more ratings, and unfortunately it worked. Why I don't like it? Because I don't think a Contemporary Christian station and party type jocks go together. I hope that someone starts another station in Houston that is like KSBJ, because that station needs competition, and we the people need more of a choice.

  15. The character Megan Fox played in Transformers was borderline attractive, and is no longer relevant after showing her true colors and inbred thumbs.

    1. Hey idiot, look at the date on 'this news'. Its from 2011 when Kankelfritz was still there. You got into the gene pool while the lifeguard wasn't watching.

  19. Wow, to see this type of behavior from people that are saying they are living to be like Jesus, is very sad. If I wasn't a Christian and was looking to find Jesus, I would have my doubts because of some of these remarks.

Susan was great. I always enjoyed hearing her in the mornings. I am praying that whatever she is doing now will bring her true joy and happiness. God is good, and has good things for us. We just have to shut up so we can see what it is he is offering. We are all just passing through this world in a short time frame, and to be ugly and nasty just breaks my heart. I know some of these are a couple of years old, but, it doesn't excuse the words that are on the page.
